I lived in Thailand in the 80's and early 90's and had little money working as an English teacher. I just loved everything about Asia. In the 30 years that I have been back in Tampa. I have never forgotten my love for Asia. I am now going all in on moving to the Phillipines in 2 months.

I retired at age 52, after 34 years of work. That was almost 20 years ago. My goal is to enjoy a year of retirement for each year that I worked. I am 71 now and will have to live just 14 more short years to age 85 to accomplish that, really my hope is to far exceed that now that the date becomes closer.

Retire in the Philippines. Live like a king on $2,000/mo budget. Seriously. I have a real estate portfolio (3 paid off houses in FL and 1 in NV) that provides me $3,000/mo NET PASSIVE income, a high-yield ETF ( QYLD) that gives me $1,000/mo income. This allowed me to retire in the Philippines 2 yrs ago. I retired at 57 in Makati and Las Vegas (50/50), I am divorced, single, i am now 58 going to be 59 soon, and I now own 2 bars in the Philippines providing extra net income. I have many young beautiful Filipinas working for me ... At 62, I will get $2,300/mo from Soc Sec. Life is good. Cheers!

I retired at 55 in 2011. I have a generous pension from the University of California. The money aspect of retirement is, of course, essential particularly if you are retiring early but don’t forget the non-financial aspect of early retirement. What are you going to do with all that freedom and time? I am a self starter and kept active with social activities, book clubs, classes, dancing, travel until I discovered Thailand in 2015. I moved to Thailand in 2017. I started collecting Social Security at 62. Married again in 2019. I love this new phase of my life. You can assess your own health status and estimate how long you think you have left. Consider your family history as well. Social Security has already determined how long you will live. Along with the financial considerations, think about the value of retiring when you are still healthy and active. I’m 68 now and doing OK and I really cherish these past 13 years of freedom from work. I’m looking forward to more years of fun and contentment.

Hi Gio, Another interesting topic which I'm sure will create lots of discussion. The retirement age, well everyone has their magic number.but without planning comes many disaster stories which you have mentioned on your channel. After 22 years of visiting the beautiful Philippines I knew it would be my retirement paradise. So I put in place a retirement plan which is now in its 15th year. As a guy in my late 50s I wanted to make sure where I wanted to live, what lifestyle I wanted. I started this plan in my 40s, I know my plan is not for everyone, but retirement is forever and the next phase of my life. Have a great day. Jeff Australia 🇦🇺

My girlfriend and I always thought that we’d spend some time in the Philippines once we retired, but we really didn’t push for retiring early in the Philippines until the pandemic. She purchased land years ago (she’s dual) and we were planning to build a house on the one lot at our leisure. Now we’re ramping up our schedule. She already has a farm and is currently re-doing the house there (her dad lives there). We now have a place to stay when we’re on vacation, rather than staying in hotels. We also won’t have any rent expense when we do retire. As far as Social Security goes….the government tries to play on our greed. Yes you will get 30% more if you wait until 67, but your break even point is like 10 years if you wait. That doesn’t take into consideration that the money is worth more now than it will be 5 years from now, plus you get and extra 5 years of retirement while you’re still in relatively decent health. Also, the average male lifespan in the U.S. is 77 so I say why wait? I’m a year younger than you and my girlfriend is mid 40s. I guess if we planned better we could be retired right now too.

So true about life. My Dad was healthy in every respect, his heart, lungs, everything fine. Even a full head of hair! Then, all of a sudden he developed an unusual strain of dementia with Parkinson's and it was like a wirlwind, within a couple of months he was gone. He loved maths and played Sudoku and gave his brain a good workout. no history in the family. You just don't know what's in store for you and what finally kills yout is always something that seems wrong, unfair, unexpected. My Grandad lived a long life and I put it down to being an optimist, never thinking about his age or being old. He ws 94 and out shopping on his own! Being happy and content with his lot in life. Never worrying and staying away from hospitals! Oh, and having a lifelong companion is important or being with someone caring and compatible. Anyway, enjoy life and stop working whenever you can because it's killing you!

Nice! The main thing I would add is just what you said about finances and debt, especially for us younger people make sure you have cash flowing assets to fund your lifestyle. Real estate back home in Canada or USA is great, stocks or monthly paying funds rather than a pile of cash that you might be tempted to spend. Its becoming a very popular destination for westerners looking to escape the matrix/rat race so make sure you top up your financial literacy so your in it for the long run!

Spot on man. Job stress and financial stress are the number one killers in the States as far as I am concerned. Not to mention the political atmosphere these days adding to the angst. I honestly believe I have added years to my life by coming here and shedding that stress and getting rid of the stuff back home that ends up becoming our own self-imposed prison. You don't need a lot to live comfortably but you do need to use common sense and be smart with your money. For the first time in a long time, I wake up looking forward to the day, except for leg day at the gym..... I don't look forward to that lol.

Good for you Gio. Lucky man. I’ll be heading that way as I plan to retire this year on Dec 31st. I’ll be 65 on Jan 17, 2025 so it’s time. I’ll spend the next 10 months selling everything that’s not tied down. I’ll get down to 2 suitcases and a backpack. My Filipina currently lives in Manila so we will be packing her and her two kids up and moving to a smaller area such as Dumaguete/Valencia. I’m counting the days. If all my stuff sells or moves on early I’ll excellerate the plan.

Thanks for sharing. I moved here in Manila in 2020 after being in the US for more than half of my life, I'll be turning 59 soon. You're correct about retiring early and not waiting to be 62 for SS pension. I lost my cousin in Oregon who's also a U.S.Military Vet and supposedly retiring this year here in the Philippines. Sadly he passed away last year at 61.

The problem with retiring too early is youre not building your fortune/nestegg during your big money earning years. I retired at 56, but now, 10+ years later, I wish I had built up my portfolio a bit more. So unless you've really invested alot early on you night say its wasted years retiring too soon.

Spent the last couple months trying to get a hold of the concepts of minimalist living. Been dumping crap outta my house at a crazy rate. Got 4 55 gallon trash bags worth of clothes to take to Goodwill or St. Vincent's tomorrow.. Probably will move to a smaller place within a year for less money. Will have to work a couple more years before making the jump to the Philippines.

I'm in my 60s and have been living in SE Asia for 7 years. But I kept my business in my home country. Though I pay tax there I still make a great income, have 2 (now 4) contractors who help me out and manage everything remotely. When my buddies tell me about $10 beers and $50 meals out I laugh and chug on my 50c beer and enjoy $4 seafood noodles. I still go back sometimes for a holiday but want to visit the Philippines soon as the beaches look amazing. Went there in the 80s but that was my only visit.

I’m 59 & am considering retiring early at age 62. My mother is 83 so am sticking around to ensure she’s okay until that inevitable day. So my retirement & recent work plans revolve around her care for the time being. Not even remotely ready for what would be next nor sure what I would do yet. At least at this point, I’m beginning to think about it.

I stopped working at 57. I had rentals in place that covered all my costs and more. I sold that house and moved into a smaller place that I own outright. That pulled enough equity to purchase a few more rentals. I took Soc Sec at 62. I also have VA disability coming in. Now at age 63 I have 3 streams of income and only use half if it. Due to my health issues my Filipina is coming here to me. Still a good life !!

Many of us have children. We divorced their mother but not them. So we work to pay child support and maintain a home. Got done with paying for their college in my 50s. Everyone is living longer and my parents are alive in their 90s. All their friends have died, many from lack of money, so I maxed out my contribution to retirement. Then COVID hit and I had an opportunity to retire. Found the best girl for me online and had a long LDR with her. Now we're living happily ever after in the Philippines. Enough saved to delay social security to my FRA. Hopefully have a baby and max that out too. Planning on living to 100 and my costs doubling every 10 to 20 years. Good luck 🎉

Well said Sir. Just liked and subscribed because everything you said is exactly what I’ve been planning for the last several years in theory. I’m 58 years old living in New England, US and Plan to quit the rat race in a couple of months and head over for early retirement with my Filipina wife. I have visited Philippines once many years ago now but I knew then I want to come back. My plan is to sell the home live off the proceeds for four years until I collect Social Security as well as my wife. We have enough money to live comfortably, still have my 401(k) put away and enough money for startup costs When we get to the Philippines. So bottom line is great advice and with a little luck and Planning anyone can do the same. Glad things worked out for you.. Mabuhay ✌🏻🇵🇭🌞🏝️

Could you do an episode on cost of educating a child in Philippines. My girlfriend is over 30 and a government professional in Davao. She has two boys, age 9 and 15 years living with grandparents in a small town in nearby province. My girlfriend owns the home which parents and her children live. I would wish for her to retire and be accessible with me to travel. So I will take on the obligations of raising these kids in Province. I need to know what is a reasonable allowance for the kids.

I'll be heading over after my fury best friend passes, I've had him since he was 10 weeks old so I owe him the same loyalty he's given me over the years. I'm 100% disabled Vet so income isn't a big problem and in 7 more years I'll get an added bonus when I claim social security.

Hi Gio, great videos, always informative. I'm wondering when renting an apartment in the Philippines, or Manila, do you tend to pay the rent in cash, or pay with Western Union transfer? I will be moving there and wonder what works with most landlords and I won't have a Philippine bank account. thank you!

That’s how I am now. I’m 41 want to get into finance so I can work remotely. Trouble is no one will entertain me. I figure if I can get $2000 a month that’s only like $15 an hour with the exception of Singapore I can live well in South East Asia on that. Plus a little passive income from property.

My buddies have the realtor rent out their house for them. Pretty nice when houses are renting for $1500-$6000/month. She only charges 6%-10% of the rent check. Other guys work for 8-12 months doing mega overtime and come to Asia and coast until their savings gets down to a certain point and then they return home and rinse and repeat. I love living here in Asia in my 40's, but the ESL jobs have dried up, so I might have to do what my buddies do, but that's a fun life too.

@@MyLifeThai371 thats what I did in 2022 worked and came out for 3 months. But when you are used to working 50 hours a week and your girlfriend has a job there boredom sets in. Especially when there isn’t a lot of expats around and in Manila! I figured I can get £1000 a month $1300 passive income at todays prices. from rental income in 10 years and do Teaching English online not so much for the money but to stop boredom even if it only pays $8 an hour. Not an issue for now as my wife is in UK and wanna stay here for 5 years minimum so she gets citizenship.

I feel like this message should be particularly heard by YOUNG VETERANS who are receiving VA benefits!!!!! If you are reciving 60 70 80 90 100 percent you typically have enough to retire in the phillipines and many other places if you plan accordingly. Additionally, if you still have GIBill benefits you can go to school online (or in country depending on place) for additional income and treat school like an online job.

I want to retire early and have saved more than enough to get to my retirement benefit age of 62.5 Can you recommend a location for someone my age looking to retire to the Phillines for a better quality of life and perhaps find love again. I would like somewhere with most of the modern conveniences I have grown accustomed and can comfortably afford a budget of $2500 a month for 10 years. Any suggestion would be appreciated.
