Why I Like the Fujiifilm XF 33mm f/1.4 for Street Photography

Today’s video is (kind of) brought to you by a survey I posted to RU-vid and Instagram, asking which lens you would like to see me use in my next street photography video. The options were: Viltrox 23mm f/1.4, Fujinon XF 33mm f/1.4, Fujnon XF 50mm f/1.4 and Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8. And the winner was… the XF 50mm f/2! But, I thought the vote would go with the 33mm, so that’s what I planned to use. This is why I don’t play the lottery… I now owe you all a future video with the XF 50mm f/1.4. Stay tuned!
One of the reasons I really like the Fujinon XF 33mm f/1.4 is that it provides a field of view equivalent to 50mm on a full frame camera, and I find that works well for lots of scenarios in street photography. Also, the 33mm f/1.4 focuses quickly and quietly and has lovely image quality. It’s becoming one of my favorite prime lenses.
The weather for this session started sunny with lots of contrast, but quickly turned to cloudy flat light. One of the street photographer’s best friends is flexibility, so I started looking for subjects that would work better in this light. I also took some time to experiment with longer exposures for intentional camera movement, panning and motion blur. I really enjoy the extra layer of feeling that creating blur in an image adds to the photo and plan to incorporate more of this in future street photography. Stay tuned for that, as well!

Some killer shots in there, Michael! The 33 is a great one, for sure! Of course, in the hands of someone like you, it doesn't matter which 50-equivalent lens you would use!

Glad to see you experimenting, that's a good thang. I loved the last photo with the Burning Bush (Fedex truck). Bill

Thanks Bill! The fire reflection with FedEx truck was a fun find. Worked it for a couple of photos to get this one. Cheers!

Very nice images Michael, as I mentioned in the past (more than once), my two most used lenses are the XF70-300 and the XF16-80, but my favorite prime is the XF33 f/1.4 (my latest lens acquisition). Be well and stay safe.

Thanks Enrique! The 16-80 + 70-300 is such a versatile combo. Hope all is well for you.

Great images Michael, especially the "burning" FedEx truck! Bellevue looks amazing around this time of the year. I was there last Friday and spent several hours downtown to take pictures. The weather was perfect and I got more than a handful of keepers for my project. I'm looking forward to your XF50 f2 video

Hi Pete! Many thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. I'm hoping for some sun in Bellevue tomorrow when I head out with the 50mm f2. So glad you're enjoying photographing in Bellevue and good luck on your project!

I love my 23, 33 and 56 WR’s, it’s all I need. Maybe I’ll get the 90mm too or 50-140mm

So many great lenses! I love both the 90mm and 50-140mm, but don't use the 50-140mm much these days because it's so large and heavy. Images are amazing, though! Have fun out there!

@@MSladekPhoto which one is the sharpest? And faster on focusing

@@rdtstudios I think the 90mm is the sharpest of all the Fujifilm lenses. Autofocus speed is about same as 50-140 on my experience - both really fast.
