I lost my period & what I did to get it back // Sharing my journey with birth control and period loss.
Hi Guys,
This week I wanted to share an extra video with you guys, one that is probably one of the most requested ever. In my last Coffee talk video, I mentioned that I had lost my period in the past and I was honestly so surprised how many of you could relate and wanted to know more about my experience.
I thought about filming this a long time ago but I didn't feel comfortable sharing it yet. You guys and this positive community made me comfortable and confident enough to share my personal journey. It really is not one size fits all so everyone's experience and journey around period loss, birth control will be different.
Being a woman is not always easy but I am happy that we have a place here where we can all support one another! If you have any questions, please comment down below or send me a private DM on Instagram!
Much love,
Sanne

Hi Sanne! I missed my period for 3 years. I went to doctors, psychologists, I tried natural help... and nothing worked. The problem was with me, I was too self-demanding. I was on a very restricted diet, my weight was not suitable for my body (but I did not want to see it). I was studying for a degree and had a lot of stress from exams. When I learned to listen to my body and give it what it needed, everything returned to normal. I started a balanced diet, I ate everything, without restricting food. I returned to a normal weight for my body. Did not sport too much, I just take long walks in a natural environment and yoga and meditation, which helped me to overcome stress. My period returned and I have been normal for 6 years. I give myself love, I listen to my body, I give it what it needs at all times. Nothing is as important as love and self-care. I hope it helps you, everything in life is temporary. Much love!!❤️ (Sorry mi English, I'm Spanish 😅)

Waking up at 6 am, working out, trying to be 'productive' is actually SO damaging when you dont listen to your soul! RU-vidrs tend to promote such a lifestyle... this lifestyle made me loose my period for two years... Females bodies should be nourished, not overworked. We should promote intuitive eating, and NOT shame people for 'laziness' and promote RESTING! Thank you Sanne for this ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
@SanneVloet
@SanneVloet 3 года назад
Waking up at 6am doesn't have to be damaging, it all depends how your day and light look like. When I wake up at 6am I am in bed by 9:30 pm, because I need my 8 hours of sleep for sure. It makes me actually more relaxed to wake up early and go to bed early but of course this is for everyone person different! But I totally agree that we should nourish our bodies and give it enough rest. ❤️❤️

Common reasons why girls lose their period when they come to my clinic are: weight loss, stress and hormonal imbalance. But I would say the top reason is always being under weight (so lower than your healthy weight)

@alex-sandradallaire2452 3 года назад
Hi, I was a model and lost my period ! You are totally right on this ! When I quit the industry, I naturally gained some weight and it then matched a more common weight for my height. My agents used to tell me it was ''normal'' because of my workouts and diet, because my routine had a lot of impact (it happened to a lot of models). But really, my doctor and my gym teacher told me it was because of my BMI and they were right ! Being underweight was the stater point of a few health problems.

It is weight related. Your body should not be in a constant state of hunger and stress. Over exercising and not eating enough is going to make a lot of things go wrong and not having your period is the man in one.

I‘m in the same situation, I lost some weight and I‘m right now under a lot of pressure because I‘m in my last year of school. I honestly don’t want to gain weight again, I like to workout and I like how my body looks when I‘m clean eating. However I‘ve got a big question. Does having a period loss damage your body forever? I‘m so young (18) and I‘m not planing on getting pregnant anytime soon, so technically it wouldn’t matter if I‘m on my period or not, but I‘m scared, that my body will be harmed forever 😅

Well i can tell you . I worked as a model as well, i lost my period as well. And the reason is stress and diet. From 10 models i know 8 of them lost their period for over 2 or even more years just because of extensive sport/workout, dieting, stress. And no one can tell me it has nothing to do with nutrition or diet ! Ofcourse it depents on the body ect but believe me there is a medical reason for it besides stress

Hi Sanne, thank you so much for this video. I lost my period for two years and when I got it back both my mother and I were crying in joy. It’s a very important topic to be discussed and I’m so grateful that you brought this up. Stress is also the major factor of my period loss, and I still struggle with stress management, especially as a fresh graduate this year. I lost my period for over two years due to being underweight and very active. I struggled with an eating disorder. I didn't get it back until I went on a trip to Paris and ate more cheese and croissants. It was heaven. And the week after I got home I got my period in like 2 1/2 years. My body just needed more nutrients and fat. It's so sad to think that some girls are afraid to give their bodies what they need because society has told them otherwise. I've been there and it sucks. I was still irregular for a while after that but now I am completely regular. I'm so thankful our bodies can tell us when something is wrong!

It’s VERY important topic im glad you shared! I used to run/workout every day to be “productive”, “healthy” like everyone promotes all over the media, i eat “healthy “ (not really) with no knowledge how much All i saw on the media is more unhealthy than healthy. it was bad for me, physically and mentally . I did a diploma on health and fitness and understood that we surround with incurrent information and there is not allot of people who say cut to this. Of course i lost my period and after 2 years i figured it out. It was an emotionall journey, and it continues. I keep on trying to trust and be aware to myself ! Do not fall to every post /video you see- be aware and conscious what you believe.

I gain about 8 pounds. If you know, what your goal is, it is easier to work for it. You always need to know, that your body says to you something is wrong. No period means your body have no energy for a child. Start to relax and learn listen to your body. Be kind to you like to a good friend. Dont be afraid if you male "only" little steps. Your body needs time to recover. It is important to work on your mind. Your body needs a period for exampel to avoid osteoporose. It is a SOS signal of your body, if there is no period.

thank you so much for sharing this Sanne! My period has been gone for about 2+ years now and I do suspect that it might have been due to weight loss/ change in diet. Although I've become less restrictive to foods and believe that my diet is currently alright following the 80/20 lifestyle, I still do not see any signs of my menstrual cycle coming back again. Just like how you felt, I think this issue becomes more worrisome as we grow older and really realise the importance of having a continuous menstrual cycle.

Natutal birth control works for me since 6 years. I track my period, my body, and avoid sex before and during ovulation. Whenever I have stress situations/ travel/ bad lifestyle - I’m more careful becasue ovulation can come ealier or be late. Just cycle changes because of that. This is not recommended, and risky, but thanks to that I found out a lot about my body. How cycle affects my mood, sex desire, that vagina slighly changes before period and sex can be not that comfortable as it is after period. For me - life changing. I wish this could be taught in school or by mothers. To all the girls having/ not having partner - please track your cycle and see how it affects you. Sanne, thank you for the video 🧡

It’s all about healthy diet and lifestyle. Eating healthy and learning how to manage stress (meditation, yoga, etc) is so important when it comes to menstrual cycles and our state of health in general. Diet/nutrition definitely plays a MAJOR role in this. Without being healthy and having enough healthy fats,, our body is not healthy enough to physically grow a baby, so it can shut your period down.

I also am an athlet during my whole life and it was so frustrating when all my friends had their period and I didn't, when I finally got it, it was not for so long. Then I tried different birth control, it helped my mood, skin but period never came back...Thought that something is wrong with me,went off the pill, got skin and mood issues. Tried to change my diet, didn't work either And now here I am, not to the 100% understood the while problem. However, I came to a conclusion about stress and my timetable When I lost my period I was even heavier then right now, but I was about to pass my finals and go to uni, also, lost my close friend in a car crush... I think every single girl, who reads this comment should know, that it is not something wrong with you, it is your horemones that are changing due to stress, you cant override it, but you can try to manage Your period wont come back in a month, do not panic, your body will find a way🙏😌 Thank you, Sanne! ❤️

I had no period for 6 years from 18-24 - working night shifts and under-eating (hyper clean and not enough protein/fats - was eating mostly just veg and fruit). Doctors tried various hormone challenges but nothing worked. Changing jobs to regular hours, eating a more balanced diet and acupuncture helped bring it back and 10 years later, I'm so grateful for my period. PS please do be careful with using cycle tracking as a method of birth control if you do not want a child, my friend got pregnant from this and it was very distressing.

Its okay to talk about these things like period and birth control! Every body is different and there are no reasons not to talk about this. Listening to your body is so important ☺️

I lost my period almost six years ago because of weight los and stress. It was fully gone for three years and I still struggle to get it back. I only get them once in a few months or they are so light that you can‘t really call them a period at all. I guess it can be a long journey. just want to let you all now, you‘re not alone with this issue and it’s so good to speak up openly, cause although periods suck they‘re so damn important

Make yourself a beet juice in the juicer in the morning and add a teaspoon of molasses...you can add carrot to the beet juice for sweetness but I guarantee you your period will be back. Let me know if you try it out. Do at least for a month.

It's great to be talking about the effects of introduced hormones to a woman's body. Sanne, you explain very well how you finally got to the point where you were completely over having your body 'interfered' with, wanting it to be free from the imposition of hormones and given the space to work out it's own equilibrium in due course. I continue to be amazed at how much intelligence my body has without 'me' infecting it! My body is truly the messenger between my conscious awareness and the intelligence that comes from a deeper place, where rhythms and cycles come from. To get to a space where you hand over your body to that very great intelligence is truly wonderful and to be really appreciated, for once your body is given that space, the next female body then gets the offering to do the same.

I've been struggling with period loss for like 1,5 years now. I;m an aspiring model, but the fact that the body which is required for the work is not entirely healthy makes me so sad. It is my dream but I;m physically not able to do it. I don't feel unhealthy but still something must be wrong if my menstruation is not properly working. It's so iritating for me... I have my period from time to time but the irregularity and the constant worry whether I'll get it in another month is so anoying love you Sanne! you are so inspiring

Thank you so much for sharing your personal experiences with us sanne! I really like the thought to be more kind to your body and listen to it, take care of yourself, create room for relaxing, too and also leave restrictions in terms of nutrition I think is important as well. But I can imagine that that's not easy in modeling industry, such a pitty - fortunately you say it's changing slowly, soooo important. None of the average women with "usual" body's fit in size zero, and it's absolutely perfect like that✌️

I've honestly waited for this video since you said you'd do it. :D I've just stopped taking the birth control pill after two years, because I've always felt bloated ever since I've started taking them - and honestly, I just started because there weren't any better and equally save options for me back then. I researcherd a lot about it and you seem to be the first one who struggled with bloating on a regular basis as well. So refreshing to hear you talking about it. Thank you for your openness. Also, I just love your videos and your calming personality. :)

I had and still have a really long journey as well with period loss and I was underweight in the past as well. The most important lesson that I've learned is that if you are underweight, it's certainly not possible to regain your period withount gaining any weight. It's certainly not about adding healthy fats to the diet but also really gaining the necessary weigh. The second important thing is that if you even gain 15 kilos it doesn't mean that you will have your period back authomatically. You would probably need to take some hormones at the beginning but if you have it back and your weight is according to healthy standards, there's a big hope that your body gets back to the natural cycle. I'm really delighted by your tasty recipiec but I'm afraid that your calories intake is much below, if not a half of a minimum for such a tall woman. Unfortunately, being very skinny and looking well sometimes doesn't go with being healthy. In such case, we need to choose what's more important. Take care :)

During the start of quarantine I started doing Chloe Ting workouts (including her HIIT routines) and that caused me to lose my period for around 3-4 months, after I stopped doing them altogether.. I also experience spotting if I go to the gym and use treadmill and epiltical trainer.. I'm now planning on starting pilates and yoga based workouts, hoping they will be gentler to my body and my menstrual cycle won't be affected by them.

Hormonal changes are different with every type of birth control pill, and more so with sustained release birth control. Some side effects are minor, some are very extreme. Not only are headaches or mood swings (and facial hair!) lousy, but there are very serious issues like decalcified teeth and bones, migraines, heart attack and stroke risks. I also experienced disordered eating that stopped my period. After many years, no more hormones, including for perimenopause and menopause, I don't want the risk and side effects.

So glad that the modeling industry has changed over the years. Of course skinny girls are still considered as a beauty standard but at least the era of size zero is over. Sizes should adapt to women, it shouldn‘t be women who need to adapt to the sizes. Glad that the stigma of period loss is finally being adressed since a lot of girls struggle with it. Thank you Sanne!❤️

Lijkt me dus zeker interessant als je een video maakt over de manier waarop jij je stress hebt aangepakt :)

Periods are actually very beautiful. I always ‘hated’ having my period (as many woman do), but I learned I have to honor it. How beautiful is it that it means you are able to create new life? The book ‘Her blood is gold’ opened my eyes and this woman Claire Baker has very usefull course about cycles.

I took birth controle for 18 years , my period stopped and didnt come back for 2 years. Stopped with the pill and went to the doctor but everything was normal. 1 year later got them back. So lost them for 3 years total. Now I have them every month but very light. Don’t need to use anything because it’s so light. I’m glad everything is back and i feel normal again.

One problem with an extended time without a normal cycle is that you are compromising your bone health and it can turn into a huge problem especially once you hit the years around and after menopause.

I’m confused why did you need birth control if you have a permanent partner who knows that you suffer from hormonal swings while using all these methods? I’ve tried 2 times with the pills but I didn’t feel myself as well.. my partner took a responsibility and I’m pretty sure that birth control is not only woman’s job, but man’s too
@M91AlohaGirl

Even more so as the reasons for not developing and commercializing male birth control methods are: emotional swings, weight gain, acne and all the down sides of female birth control methods........... so for us it's fine but for them no way...

Avoiding all abs-workouts during/right before menstruation would help too. (Well.. actually stopping all intense workouts.) Relaxing yin yoga poses with props would soften all inner tissues as well as relaxing the nervous system. Periods are times for inner work and calming down. 🙏
