It's canon to the lore it's just not canon to the games because that's a different sonic from a different universe in the sonic multiverse. It's officially canon it's made by Sega/Sonic Team.
Well technically since Secret Rings is Canon since it was refreced in Generations, Dark Spine Sonic is just Dark Sonic but not by using chaos emeralds. So yea if in that situation he didn't have the seven Secret rings he would have gone Dark Sonic
Dark Sonic is great to me because it shows off that even Sonic can get to a point where he reaches a terrifying state of anger. Sonic having this form taken on by negative emotions while he reaches a certain breaking point is just so fascinating. Another thing that makes it special is that it only happened once in a non canon anime. I want to see it again of course but if it ever does come up I'd want it to be a rarity. This will show off how hard it is for Sonic to reach that point and that if you make him, you better watch out cause that's not the same Sonic you're fighting (at least in terms of demeanor and what he's willing to do).
I like your take on how they could potentially use Dark Sonic in future installments. I personally saw it as something similar to Naruto and the Tailed Beast power where Sonic would use the Dark Power as sort of a last resort or something that spikes out from a spark of rage. Like, Sonic would use his Super form as well but in certain situations that would probably enrage him or put him in a tight spot, he’d have to tap into the Dark form. That’s just my take though.
Sonic is a character that’s very good at disguising his emotions and knowing how to keep chill, but even then he’s still a living being that is capable of being pushed to his emotional limits in stressful situations. That’s why I think Dark Sonic is so cool, because it’s rare we ever get to see Sonic express strong emotion, especially emotion that causes him to lash out dangerously like Dark Sonic does.
Dark Sonic’s scene is honestly one of my favorite scenes in Sonic X. The amount of rage, frustration and negativity going through Sonic is perfect for whenever he is over his limit
I would pay money to see Dark Sonic in a Sonic game. Dark Sonic is one of my favourite forms of Sonic. How crazy would it be to see Sonic snap for the first time in a game like Sonic Forces. The ton of that game at the start would have made it make sense.
I know right? Sonic Forces would have been a great way to make this form canon! After all, it was said that Sonic was tortured. But the game was kind of rushed (and was kid-friendly) so we never got to see how bad it got. It would have been interesting to see Sonic pushed into his Dark form! Heck maybe Eggman would have kept him on negative Chaos Energy to make it difficult for someone to rescue him because his anger and the massive exposure of negative C.E. would have kept him in his Dark form for a long time. (Yeah I know, it's dark but this is Eggman we're talking about. And he does kind of seem to snap slightly in Forces)
I love Dark Sonic and Darkspine Sonic because both forms were made out of pure rage and hatred. I love that they rarely appear because it always gives a shock factor. If Sonic goes dark....sh*t just got real. Not to mention it shows that the ones that smile the most, are usually the ones that have the darkest secrets. 10/10
I always saw this form as like Yang to Super Sonic’s Yin, which makes sense considering that instead of using the positive energy from the Emeralds, he uses the negative energy like Chaos did going into its Perfect form. The way I thought they were gonna go was that there would be times where Sonic would use this Negative energy (Dark Sonic) and times where he’d use Positive energy (Super Sonic). Eventually, he’d have to learn about the balance between the light and the dark and from there gain a completely new power that combines the Dark form and Super form into a true Perfected form. Would make a nice little fanfic if you ask me.
Unfortunately, as much as I like that concept, that’s only in localized versions of Sonic lore. In the original Japanese interpretation, how it works is that depending on your emotions, you get varying degrees of chaos energy. It’s confusing, hence why the American versions had a different version of how it works. Dark Sonic can still happen as it is a product of Sonic’s rage.
I honestly love how they handled the concept of a Dark Sonic! Instead of making him evil like most people would when coming up with a dark version of a hero: they make him reach his limit and, as a lot of people would when they reach their limit, use their negative emotions as fuel for their actions. Like you said: it makes him more relatable, that even the most chill of people can boil over. Sure, it takes more time, but boiling cold water also takes more time than with room-temperature water. Still in control, but with a different way of going about it. More people should do this with dark characters honestly!
I really like Dark Sonic, because I generally like moments when Sonic gets genuinely angry and how potentially scary that could be. On TvTropes, it's called "Beware the nice ones". In my opinion, There is nothing scarier than when kind, relaxed person gets angry. Plus, Dark Sonic looks cool as hell.
The way I see it is everyone gets mad, we have our moments where we meet our breaking point and get desperate. It doesn’t make us corrupt; it makes us human.
Recently saw the original japanese dub of the scene and going off it I think your theory of Sonic not being corrupted might be true. There are different details in that version, one being that the tension slowly escalates when he notices that Cosmo was bruised and when he asks what happened to Chris the metarex claims he had to punish them like how you'd train an animal (confirming they were tortured). But the threat really escalates when he tells him that if he breaks the glass they'd instantly disintegrate and with that clear threat of danger his only option was to use the fake negative powered emeralds as means of saving them. Another important detail is that besides the evil like smile he gives when first transforming, during the short fight he never laughs or makes any cocky remarks but instead remains audibly aggressive and serious. Giving more weight that he was mostly in control and that the smile he gave at first was just him holding back or resisting the evil energy from taking over, so in essence forcing a smile.
What I remember this form/ episode for is definitely the talk Eggman gave Sonic, even going as far as to compare him to Shadow. As a kid it made me wonder "is it _really_ okay to bully the bully?" Anti-heroes are interesting, they sometimes scare the villains by giving them a taste of their own medicine and it comes across as cathartic, but there's a reason they aren't just called heroes. Anyone can trick themselves into thinking they're doing the right thing but their intentions don't necessarily make their actions right. Story-wise, it would be an interesting thing to explore but I just can't see Dark Sonic being something Sonic would willingly want to transform into, character-wise. Returning evil for evil doesn't make one good.
Honestly i think this form is heavily underrated . I honestly think Dark sonic can be a really good thing for sonic stories, because it honestly makes sonic even better than he already is. It shows that sonic has his own limits and cannot be perfect all the time. Also it shows how much he cares about his friends. gameplay wise, he would be perfect for a final boss. Because in sonic X he literally has the speed of light and can crush enemies in seconds. Imagine how cool it would be to play as dark sonic and attack the boss and crush the enemies in seconds, it would be really satisfying for me personally . I really wish they make him canon because he is a really good thing for the sonic franchise.
He's canon just not to the games but he is canon to the lore. This is a different sonic than the one from the games, this takes place in a different universe.
It was cool that in the Nazo Unleashed fan film video, they used Dark Sonic in a small scene. Wished it was used a bit more in the games but it was still cool
Fun fact: Their were 15 Fake Emeralds that gives him his own unique negative energy, so somehow Dark Sonic is similarly Unique like Sonic The Comic's Fleetway Sonic.
Dark Sonic is cool because it shows how Sonic has emotions such as anger rage and how he is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals. Edit how Sonic seeing his friends hurt or injured and how he’s willing to go that far for them. It’s showing how he has a point till he’s willing to that far. It’s a cool design and at the same time scary.

@@snowbird1381 Actually, in the nazo animation, this was actually the reason for Sonic to turn Dark. Nazo killed Tails infront of Sonic, and that was it. Sonic turned Dark.

I really like his design. I like the idea of him, but one problem is that this form is a bad demonstration of Sonic's integrity. This form tells you that Sonic can get so mad to where he is going to do anything to achieve his goal. He enjoys defeating the enemies, like he always does, but it's not the same as he would normal. Great Analysis of this form, my dude! :)
From the way I've heard it described is that: Sonic's reasoning becomes clouded and he cannot think clearly, essentially going by fighting instinct without much thought, basically in a primal state of mind. Unrelated but that concept reminds me of mega Lucario, where he fights with no pitty or remorse. Simply fighting with nothing holding back his strengh.
@@vohloo9797 That’s a really good way of explaining it. I play rhythm games and I can tell you that fight or flight is way different from just pressing keys and hoping your FC’d it (yes, we do that. For players that set their scroll speed to only give them 0.25 seconds to read whatever is happening for some reason (aka me), we just click. It works usually. Think of it as getting a rough idea of what I should do and then immediately acting on it rather than over-preparing and getting my health bar nuked). Fight or flight is a way faster response (a split second also feels like five for some reason) and you usually don’t know what your goal was after you’ve done it. It’s weird, but can really save your butt in bad scenarios (I got into a fight with my sibling when I was 10, me randomly (I hadn’t considered it a possibility cause I suck at fighting) knowing momentum redirection and how to not accidentally hurt him during the fight only pissed him off even more. For context: we were fighting in the car and he tried to jump at me, I grabbed his arm and flung him onto the carpet).
Personally I see dark sonic as sort of a fight or flight reaction to a really bad situation. He desperately wants to keep his friends safe and will do anything to do that.
How you explain it makes the character so charming It doesn't break the lore; it enhance it. Sonic having a boiling point makes him more a relating character👍
I mean the way how I interpret Dark Sonic is this is what happens when you make Sonic angry enough because I don't think the chaos emeralds are like enhancing his Rage or like corrupting him I think that is genuinely just how he feels in that moment and it makes sense because when Eggman said hey Sonic this isn't you acting all violent like this Sonic was listening and that's why he detransformed
we don't really know what personality he has given how much screentime he has but I like to think that dark sonic is not like fleetway super sonic, he is calm but very violent, would be cool to see something like this in a future game or something. Dark Sonic is a interesting thing. People love it when hero actually shows this type of side probably cause they can relate to it in a way. While I like Sonic as a chill hero I think ignoring or completely having him not have a dark side is strange and limited to Sonic as a character.
Dark sonic is not only the best version we’ve seen, it’s the most necessary for his character. It reminds Me of Archie sonic cause this is the edgiest we’ve seen him. Season three of sonic x I think brought the best out of the crew because we got to see them pushed to the breaking point. Sonic was really fighting and showing exhaustion. He got sad, he got scared, and he didn’t always know if he would win. I think dark sonic fits cause the metarex were completely different villains who were killing whole planets and species. Not even eggman would go that far and it was enough to disturb shadow, who is the darkest sonic character. If they were not interested in Capturing sonic, Chris and cosmo would’ve been killed without hesitation.
I think, events like sonic lost world's story would make sense to have dark form in it, becase of the lose of his friends and the other events that happend in it. I know lost world was not a good sonic game but it's story might have worked with Dark Sonic.
I think the intention behind this transformation was not only to show a hidden aspect of Sonic's internal character, but also to show just how vile the villians of this arc truly are. Going as far as to torture his friends so that Sonic's altruistic attitude would get shattered and enter into a state of mind in where reason is gone and is left fighting out of primal instincs and rage. Essentially treating the character and hero as a toy whom which they could experiment on. Really goes to show the lenghs the Metarex can go to in order to achieve their twisted goals. In my opinion they're prob the most ruthlless Sonic villians in the series (along side comic Eggman).One example of this is them blowing up the ship that pilot girl was in (scene was cut from the english dub). Sorta understand why Eggman condemned them for what they did. While people would say it was out of character for him to act that way, I think it just shows that there are lines that even he wouldn't cross. Since his main beef is with team Sonic, they are the only ones that can really stop him so he uses deadly force on them. Others he just traps or incarcerated, never outright tortures. Edit: Though admittedly Eggman does tread that fine line often, I guess the good nature he showed at the end of SA2 pops in now and again to prabably dile him back from full insanity.
Dark Sonic is a really cool concept and form, sad that it's not canon to the games. Some might disagree with this, but since so many years have passed since that Sonic X episode first aired, and he's still not in the games, despite the popularity, the movies are the only hope of this form appearing once again.

You just put everything i felt about this form to words, amazing video, and i agree that this should not be cast aside as a "non canon" thing by Sega, not only for being great on it's on and for Sonic's character, but for another reason i saw in a animation concept on RU-vid. This animation brings Hyper Sonic as a transformation using both the positive and negative feelings of the Chaos Emeralds, Sonic being the one that Unifies Chaos in all forms for his goals at a perfect balance, being the limit breaker for Sonic himself, making his character evolve into something more than the static "Cool hedgehog" that always trash the evil doctor with his skills and power of friendship etc etc.
1:49 I don’t think it’s too far off from Sonic. In one of his earliest Japanese character descriptions, its stated that on the rare occasions that Sonic really gets mad he shows a vicious side that shocks even his closest friends.
Dark Sonic I think is a pretty cool idea for Sonic to have, given the Chaos Emeralds are power by thoughts with Positive and Negative emotions. We seen Sonic go Super Sonic many times, but what about in terms of his inner Darkness? This honestly gives me a whole lot of Jak and Daxter vibes as for one that Video Game series is centered around the themes of Light, Darkness, and Balance. Another reason is that Jak has the power and ability to go Dark Jak or Light Jak when the actions need to be called by harnessing the power of Dark and Light Ecos. Another franchise I think does this would be Kingdom Hearts, as the characters would have conflicts with the darkness when the light is a good thing and the darkness is a bad thing, but that's not the case. It's the actions of those who uses it. Riku undergoes a arc of overcoming his mistakes of giving into the darkness and letting things get the best of him in the first game as he would make a recovery over a few games to where he has balance in his heart. And of course there's Super Smash Bros Ultimate's World of Light, Galeem fights for light, Dharkon fights for darkness, Sonic and many of the characters are in the middle. It would've been really cool if Sega does a Sonic game where the antagonist uses the positive energy of the Chaos Emeralds yet Sonic has to use the negative energy of the Chaos Emeralds. Could you imagine that? I personally like to think of Dark Sonic as part of my personal Sonic Head Canon, kinda similar to some elements from Sonic X like the characters such as Topaz, Chuck, and the President.
Dark Sonic strikes me as being kinda like Spider-Man with the Symbiote. He's angrier, less concerned with being nice, more arrogant, etc. It's not like it makes him a villain, even Spider-Man never committed very serious crimes with the Symbiote. Maybe he'd kinda be like how Sonic is normally in the UK comic - a bit of a prick. Some people would say Dark Sonic is unnecessary because "a darker Sonic already exists with Shadow" but I disagree with this; Shadow isn't a meaner Sonic but an introverted Sonic.
Tbh tho its sad such great character potential got tossed aside it would be interesting to see how dark sonic evolves through the series....to bad its too much of a long shot for sega
People are drawn to this makeshift super form because Sega never allows Sonic to show any kind of emotion nowadays unless it's the over-the-top "We're Sonic Heroes!" attitude; Even in the IDW comics there's a rule that writers aren't allowed to have Sonic cry. They want to maintain an image for the character that just leaves him as a souleless husk, only able to smile from ear to ear and spread positivity wherever, this dark form makes him feel like more than that: Like an actual person that actually feels genuine emotion like anger and sadness.

Yeah, everyone seems to think Dark Sonic is evil and corrupt, but i dont think so at all. Dark Sonic is STILL Sonic. I doubt he would ever hurt those who he cares for, he would never do anything "evil" because if he was so corrupt or evil, he would have NEVER let Eggman OF ALL PEOPLE, talk with him and calm him down. He would've absolutely destroyed Eggman if he was corrupted. People tend to believe Dark Sonic is like Fleetway's Super Sonic but that is def not the case, and its obvious even with the little screentime he has had.

Sonic always hides his emotions and he's always chill. When u make the chill guy that hides his emotions (very well that not even some fans could recognize it) angry yk you pushed him to the limit and you really hurt him bad. Real bad.
I'm a sucker for when the cheerful/dork protags have some kind of berserk mode. Although Dark Sonic is much more aware of his actions then most other berserk modes he still could fill the typical role of one. Ex most berserk modes end up fighting the allies of the protag at some point and I could totally see Sonic even though he's not a mindless beast when Dark, he could be effected so much by the negative feelings and energy that he'd fight off his friends if they prevented his goal but never trying to really hurt anyone. Honestly the more I think about it that would play out similar to Ninjago when Wu fought his students under the influence of the scroll. Just normally calm character being irrational but still aware of their actions.
Dark Sonic is an interesting form for sure, but to make a clear comparison to a hero who fits the "corruption" if you will. Jak during the events of Jak 2 firs that better, as unlike Sonic who's in full control but the negativity from the fake chaos emeralds is definitely influencing him to have these dark Thoughts and darker ways of doing things; the Dark Eco Jak gets pumped makes him act like a feral primate when he goes Dark form, and it's up to the player, but realistically Jak is able recognize some things but he's unable to be in control and is in a sense corrupted but not Corrupted like sibling villains Gaol and Maia Acheron were in the first Jak and Daxter game.

I don't think Dark Sonic is a purely corrupted form of himself, it's just his intentions become more straight to the point, meaning he'll achieve anything to accomplish them no matter the cost. Which is kind of scary since Sonic is usually the type of guy to look out for trouble, just because it's fun for him. The way I think this form in particular only comes out is when he feels he's at his lowest point. Seeing Chris unconscious, unknowingly about his condition, and Cosmo absolutely terrified makes him feel he's failed at his mission, which is to protect his friends. When he feels like the enemy has gone too far, that's when Dark Sonic will be unleashed. This also plays along how when Shahra died, he turned into darkspine Sonic which was also powered by the negative emotions of the world rings. I like to think they're related in a way As much as I would love to see him return, I don't think it should be used often... Like extremely rarely. If this concept was used too often then not only it would ruin what made it feel so special to begin with but it would also ruin Sonic's character, since his whole characterisation is to be a laid back sort of guy who loves adventures.
The thing is though. Dark Sonic CAN become a Canon thing if Sega wanted it. SA1 already introduced the concept that the Chaos Emeralds wield both Negative and Positive energy. With the Negative being used by Chaos, and positive for Sonic. And in the early days, I could see Sonic becoming Dark in canon. After all he had much more emotion back then compared to how he's treated now. Despite Sonic's joking in the earlier era, he can still get serious when the situation demands it. This gets said a lot but Sonic & The Black Knight perfectly showcases Sonic's character. Where in the final scene there's no jokes. Hardly any smiles. Just a serious Sonic staring down at his opponent in order to understand the situation. Nowadays Dark Sonic is just never gonna appear. Sonic never showcases any other personality trait besides the perfect hero who only tells jokes. (Within game canon anyway).

I am totally with you and agree about dark sonic, not only that, I totally find dark sonic to be badass. And I think dark sonic is really just sonic enraged but not corrupted. The only example I would think is corrupted is fleetway super sonic. Who is 100% psychotic and corrupted.

Dark Sonic as a concept is so cool, I think the director for Sonic X explained Dark Sonic as Sonic giving into his animalistic and violent erges. The desire to maime and kill, that's what Dark Sonic is. Every hero has a dark side and Sonic shouldn't be an exception to that rule. In fact, I think Sonic would be more prone to using his dark side than other fictional characters would. I could see Dark Sonic as being sorta like a Fleetway counterpart in game canon. Where he's a bit more reckless and uncaring in his approach but overall still tries to do what's best.
I wish he was canon, to me it shows despite all of Sonic's confidence and carefree nature even he can reach a point where if someone pushes him way too far, his anger manifests into this state of anger and rage.

The superpowered evil side is one of my all-time favourite tropes in anime and while Dark Sonic may not actually be evil he still brings the same general vibes. There's something so viscerally satisfying about watching a hero give in to their darker impulses and let loose in a way they normally won't. I'm fond of Darkspine as well for that, but it definitely feels a lot more specific to Secret Rings. Whereas with Dark Sonic, both in terms of lore and design, it feels like something that would be in a mainline game.
He was certainly okay doing it with the world rings. And using negative energy isn't really a bad thing, as they stem from negative emotions. It's okay to feel angry, but you shouldn't let that anger control you. I feel seeing sonic not getting controlled by his negative emotions rather than outright not feeling/burying them inside shows his integrity better.

I see Dark Sonic as something similar to the Symbiote from Spider-man. Where it causes Sonic to act in a more malicious way. I like to think when Sonic first enters this form, it’s like how you described the form, but the more he abuses it, the more crazed and sadistic he becomes.
All I have against Dark Sonic is how little screen time and (spotlight in general he gets). Even if he appeared in more episodes only in Sonic X I would've loved that.
This is why I like the Archie interpretation of Sonic pre-reboot more than any other. He was was cocky, abrasive, and kind of an asshole but he was also well meaning, noble, and heroic to the point he internalized that he is the good guy. But he also showed different emotions. He showed guilt not just in failing to save the day sometimes but also in his own actions when it becomes apparent that he hurt his friends in some way. He grieves over the loss of others. He had a love life. He even cried sometimes. And sometimes he looses. And now issue showed this off better than #175 when Eggman destroys Knothole and pushes Sonic to his limit and BEATS HIM. Now Sonic's edge has been sanded down and rounded out. He's still a good character but now he's a more safe. A kid friendly mascot. He's a snarkier Micky Mouse. And he's not allowed to show strong emotions or loose. He's not allowed to develop anymore.

THIS! this is the interpretation of dark sonic that i hold as my number one. i love the way you break it down, even with defending the take that dark sonic isn’t really “corrupted”, bc i felt the same but didn’t know how to explain as well why. most fan animations portray dark sonic as him turning evil. while it’s cool and all seeing that what-if scenario, it’s not the main appeal i have with this form. i don’t see him as evil, rather i see dark sonic as still his same self with the same objectives, but does them in a more emotional raw manner that would carry out actions more violently and angrily than usual, albeit in a more sadistic manner (like when he was laughing) reflective of perhaps an inner instinct for his thirst of battle, and the strong desire seeing his enemies getting beat down in vengeance. also i enjoy the trope in general of a chill person who is almost never seen losing his cool, be pushed to the breaking point and absolutely losing it. that’s why my fav dark sonic fan content would revolve mostly around him acting out in rage but with him still in control and carrying out the same objective he’d still have as his normal self, except in a much more violent (and badass) manner that catches his enemies off guard in shock of how different his disposition suddenly changed
As far as I know (might've been mentioned in the video, haven't watched the full thing yet) Dark Sonic was originally created by a fan, and his concept was if Sonic had negative energy when turning Super, he'd turn Dark, and similar to characters like The Hulk, he'd get stronger the angrier he became
How cool would it be to see dark sonic appear in a boss fight. For example the first phase you play as normal sonic and the fight is difficult but you manage to come out on top them. The second phase being caused by something bringing sonic to his breaking point causing him to become dark sonic and entering the second phase which is really just sonic turning the boss of the level into his punching bag and just shredding through there health bar as a sheer contrast to phase one.
1:53 that is absolutely a corrupt version of Sonic. It's an anime trope that when a character becomes possessed by evil energy that either their eyes look dead or completely blank like Dark Sonic. He's become more violent as a result of the negative energy amplifying his anger and hate
i really love dark sonic, the more a character is pushed to their limits without snapping, the more intense said snap should be, and i think this illustrates it super well. it would work especially well for modern sonic, who's coddled by so many sega mandates, and isn't as varied in emotional outbuststs as archie sonic, who kinda already had this on lock in its own way. sidenote, but idw recently introduced fake chaos emeralds, and im really really hoping this means that they plan to introduce dark sonic at some point.
Dark Sonic is one of my favorite forms of all time, and I personally believe that this form might come back in the mere future at some point. And I also do think that this form is fitting for Sonic, I mean yeah sure that's not how Sonic is supposed to be, but like what it was stated in the video it fits well cause it shows that Sonic too has a breaking point/limit and plus I think we've seen many other heroes from different franchises go through that said breaking point so Sonic here wouldn't be all that different if his angered state was showing. But yeah all and all I still like this form regardless ^^
It's implied that sonic holds back to not do sonic booms or hurt things too badly, so if he was given the natural boost of complete mindlessness AND a lack of inhibition. Imagine if it's know that dark sonic's power is mostly his own.
Yeah I’d like to see Sonic with more of an emotional range. Yes, I love his usual positive attitude but to see him show more of his flawed and darker side once in a while gives him more depth as a character.
