In early December 2021 asked by a major British newspaper to write some words reflecting on my recent two-week visit to the UK. I had been invited, then disinvited, to Cambridge University in 2019, when I had planned and made arrangements to participate in a seminar on the Book of Exodus, to help me prepare a series of public lectures on that story. I was invited back to Cambridge this year, and visited, with my wife, in late November and early December, and I wrote about the experience for The Telegraph, a major UK newspaper. That link is here:

Negative part of today's Britain is not colonialism but the denial. Somehow even after massacring India's economy by converting different kinds of artisans into peasants and coolies who helped them export raw material preventing any kind of industrial revolution, most British believe that their occupation of India resulted in a net gain for us because they gave us the 'gift' of English language. It is like a rapist telling a woman that she had a net gain due to the rape: a baby!

As a proud Englishman my chest swelled up until it almost burst. It was a very pleasant change to hear a highly intelligent person praise the UK for what it has given to the world. We’re not perfect of course, but it’s safe to say that in science, literature, music (Rock and Pop, I’ll concede Classical to the Europeans), engineering, stopping The Nazis (with due acknowledgment to many other allies - thank you) and probably stuff I’ve forgotten, we punch above our weight.

It's the separatioon of state from monarchy, Magna carta, the charter movement /Bill of Rights and English common law, and it spread to the commonwealth, That are truly special. That's why many foreigners bring theirr cases to British court, where they have most chance of a fair trial. Those other things you mentioned, are not unique to britain
@DenUitvreter

@@Rowlph8888 You got the parliamentary monarchy and bill of rights throug an invasion by a much more modern country.
@Rowlph8888
@Rowlph8888 2 года назад
@@DenUitvreter No, Britain got the bill of rights(1688), through renewed public interest in individual human rights after the English Civil War, originally started in the Charter of liberties(1100) and Magna Cart(1215), hich were the 1st instances of human rights, in law, ratified, in world history. The reason why English history has had the most impact in the world, in a positive sense (as it also has a negative sense, when you see all the conflicts in the world have arisen predominantly from the Empire), is because of the number of items of legislation at different points throughout history, keeping the public's awareness that their own interests can be protected and individual justice can be served.Many modern nations in the Commonwealth, europe (and the USA), now have such robust structures also, that there are so many items in law and so much consciousness of the public's rights independent of external authority, that it would be very difficult for any tyranny to overcome such countries, such as we see happens in other modern countries like Russia
@DenUitvreter
@DenUitvreter 2 года назад
@@Rowlph8888 Why do you think English history has had the most impact on the world? After a bit back and forth England was back to absolute rule again, and then the Dutch Republic invaded. The Dutch Republic that had codified the freedom of conscience and therefore religious toleranc in 1579 in what was to become it's de facto constitution. In 1581 It had declared the people had inalienable rights and a monarch had to serve the people, denouncing the divine right of kings, and claimed the people's right to no longer recognize it's monarch when he had become a tyrant. This was the place where the parliaments were made up of commoners, there was upward social mobility, servants nor wives could be beaten, the home originated and besides men like Spinoza, Descartes John Locke could freely live and write on his social contract, inspired by his surroundings. After which he accompagnied Mary to England for her coronation and the signing of the bill of rights. This was also the republic that founded New York and introduced reglious tolerance, multiculturalism and upward social mobilty to the America's, from which the USA later used the Dutch DOi of 1581 as a blueprint. These values were not carried by law, but on one hand by the freedom of the printing press there letting the enlightenment ideas spread of Europe, on the onder hand by the modern capitalism it had invented too, the commercial success and therefore strength. So it changed London and New York directly, and Paris indirectly into places with individual freedom as we know it now, so without having to stay in your class, in the position god, king and nobility had decided for one. The term 'glorious revolution' might give the impression it was a process from within, but that came about because being invaded was already a sensitive subject back then. It's no coincidence the breakdown of the feudal structures that had been there for ages came from the LowLands, including Flanders at first, because feudalism was based on land and didn't work with so much water around. The modern society had been brewing there for ages only waiting for the printing press and protestantism to explode over the globe.

@michaeljones5069
@michaeljones5069 2 года назад
@mrmayonaise Not only is your feeble attempt at a slur repute with error, which is remarkable given that you put forth not a single argument (Germany under National Socialism did not "invent" rocket technology; you're referring, I suppose, to the V1 flying bombs, or what we now call 'cruise missiles', and the V2 ballistic missiles used primarily in the terror campaign against the British Empire, before going on to lose to said Empire; which was a utilisation and weaponisation of technology which had been in fact first properly been discovered in the United States, in point if fact--as well as minorly in France). But your ignorance of the non-facts you used to construct your solecism and vulgar assertion aside, I'd simply enquire: which country do you regard as "good", to employ the language that your infantile conception of the world involves, or which country or polity would you regard at least as "not evil"? What else, in the post-industrial world, can even begin to explain the evolution of the modern West as the exception to a world of tyranny and feudalism, if not the common law tradition and property rights? And on the question of empire, England in the 1500s was more free and "culturally", to use your word, developed than the states extant TODAY which were the product of Islamic imperialism (perhaps one of few pre-industrial events comparable to the horrors of Nazism and Stalinism). Africa had nothing resembling a written language when Britain had developed steam engines and Shakespeare (unparalleled to this day, it pains me to say, as a lover of Nabakov's prose) had been dead for hundreds of years. China was a feudal monarchy using spring-loaded chariots when Britain was producing Rolls Royce motor cars powered by supercharged internal combustion engines. Moreover, it deteriorated into an even worse form of feudalism in the 20th century, killing about 90 million people in peacetime (more than the Second World War), and is to this day a horrifying totalitarian state, which has survived only through accepting Western capital: most of its growth is not endogenous to China but rather the product of Western corporations outsourcing production and thus investment to that country. India, perhaps the most backwards country on earth before the British arrived, it is said by all economists at any rate, will overtake China after (if it is lucky) achieves a brief period of hegemony, and this will persist into any foreseeable future. That is, the parliamentary democracy (where did that come from?) that was the "jewel in the crown" of the British Empire will be the global power that the other off-shoot of the Empire, the United States, has and continues to be. To what nation are you comparing Britain when you refer to it as evil? Also, allowing for your historical ignorance regarding the origins of jet engine propulsion being the Third Reich, what "cultural" aspects of Nazism have we inherited which you regard as positive, if incidental? It is true that technological discovery is possible in totalitarian systems (though innovation is unlikely: there tends to be a "time limit" to these things); but cultural, artistic, social, legal, constitutional, civilisational changes of positive world-historical significance? This is axiomatically impossible under these other systems. So, I'm sure you will be able to answer these two simple questions (what is the alternative?, what totalitarian system furthered civilisational change for the better beyond the mere technological?). In case you're worried, I am not holding my breath as I wait for you to run away like the crerinous illiterate shit that that you are. I ( I don't normally read any comments for this reason - the notion of replying to this kind of utter puerile garbage is just a waste of a few valuable minutes.)

We have the same problem. The other side of the aisle would deny you that same right. They would shut you up and deny you your birthright. So at what point is protecting ideals more dangerous to the principles themselves? When one group would use their freedom of speech to deny you yours, it comes to a point you can’t agree to uphold their protection because they have broken the unspoken contract. If you love freedom of speech, there comes a time you must stand and fight. They can say whatever they want, introduce any policy they wish, but once it censors ideas or denies speech regardless of the implied “good” it must be destroyed or we will lose everything that guaranteed these rights for us, and what must be fought for to guarantee it for our children.

@@108noonoo The definition of a subject is: A member of a state other than its ruler, especially one owing allegiance to a monarch or other supreme ruler. And whether you want to believe it or not… Queen Elizabeth the Great was higher than you in terms of status and rank. Hence why she was Queen. She was supreme commander of the armed forces, head of the commonwealth nations and great Britain, defender of the faith, etc. Even the most decorated generals and soliders are under her in terms of rank. But regardless of rank and status, she was a person like you and me, she was human, a woman, a mother, a grandmother, a daughter, a sister, a friend. You seem to be under the impression that rank/status is somehow subjective depending on ones own idea of their self worth. Its not. Rank/status is bestowed upon or earned in which there is a chain of command that is attached to it. However, despite all this, a persons rank/status does no way impede a persons self worth or right to be treated equally in terms of respect and kindness. In the wake of her majesties funeral, everyone who ever met her said the same thing; she made you feel at ease, she didn’t care about protocol in terms of bowing or curtsying. So yes, those who are British Citizens are subjects to the crown. We are members of this state which with that comes respecting the crown. You don’t have to like the crown or any member of the royal family but you cannot get away from the fact that they are our rulers bound by a constitution which they uphold.

We had no history teacher, therefore, I could not get a History GCSE or study any of it. Great stuff! The suicide and unemployment rate of autistic men brings me, truly, to tears. I don't want to see Britain weaken because her social fabric is rotten. It’s the first time I’ve bought tickets to any big event. I’m 32 and a single mom, and when I hear him speak, I feel more aligned with the kind of perspective that is constructive and the least pathological. Things make sense and I feel at peace. This presentation of his article did calm and align me. His sense of wonder, gratitude, and pursuit of truth, in a positive and informed way, is like that of a trail blazer when I feel entangled, and like a beacon when I cannot see. I want so much to help make this world a better place. Right now my responsibility is to my children, but I am trying to treasure up these things so that I can hopefully become the person I need to be to make the world a little better in my own way, according to the gifts and strengths that I have, while trying to root out and burn up any pathologies or outdated schemas within me. I am trying, Dr. Peterson, like so many. I've never had an opportunity to hear my place of birth spoken about in such a proud way, or in such a truthful way. We know we are far from perfect, but it's also evident that being born in such a place is, or perhaps once was, a colossal privilege. You can't eat an entire three course meal with delight, be nourished by it, and then turn around and despise the chefs, the restaurant and the farmers responsible for gathering the ingredients. I'm sure you've heard much loose talk about people having _demons_. the ignorant think of that as a bad thing, when in fact every human being has a "demon" (or _daimon_, as Socrates would have called it.) some have more than one, in fact. demons are morally neutral, strictly speaking. morality is not something that applies to eternal creatures who owe their existence directly to the Creator, and demons are such eternal creatures. depending upon the context, some demons even have a different name and function, and people call them other things like "gods" and "angels". but really all are much the same in nature. they're eternal beings set in motion by the Prime Mover. how does that apply to Mr. Peterson and his comical fake lecture here? well...no human being *voluntarily* makes a complete arse of himself over and over again, the way that Mr. Peterson is dedicated to doing, unless they've got some powerful force within them who's driving them onward. a _demon_, in other words (or possibly more than one.) some demon (or possibly more than one) *wants* to keep Mr. Peterson upright, well sedated if necessary, and burbling pompous words in an empty void while he stares downward at a laptop half the time, thus conveying the irresistible impression that Mr. Peterson's reading someone else's script. it's a ridiculous position Mr. Peterson's placed himself in, but he's thrown his elderly and sickly self fully into the task. that's a demon's work. the work of a _spirit created by the Creator of everything_. so you're right, Mr. Reeve. Mr. Peterson is moved by a spirit from God. possibly more than one such. ~Chara

A little known fact is that the song “Rule Britannia” isnt about colonialism but a command by the heavens to rule the waters around the island of Great Britain. King Alfred the Great, about whom the opera which that song comes from was written, was the ruler of a small country called Wessex in the South West of Great Britian. Wessex along with all the other Anglo-Saxon nations were under invasion or occupation by the Viking Danes. King Alfred in fighting them back, converted his enemies to Christianity and began political Union of the nation that would become England. “Rule Britannia” is a command so that he Vikings would raid and oppress the people again. And , the opera continues to describe who the English people became so much more free than their European counterparts for being an on island which meant the king had to spend more of his resources on a Navy and not a standing army. In those days the army was the police force. And could be used to oppress the population. But England had no need for an army during peacetime and therefore only tended to have a navy with a very small volunteer army which allowed the citizens to live in relative peace. The history of Britain after 1066 is the the constant struggle for the people of all the nations of Great Britain to return to their ancient liberties that they enjoyed after King Alfred’s victory and before the Norman conquest.

Despite the evidence of this you seem to think by voting the same you'll get something different. And it just gets worse and worse. If I had to go back I would not go to England as their stupid votes for Tories shows they have lost it. So it fills me with immense pride and joy to hear someone, especially someone from another country and someone of the stature of Professor Peterson, to show such knowledge, respect, and love for our country. @Creation Girl I don't think Britain could be the reason for slavery because it occurred long before Britain existed. I think Britain was the main reason black Africans were taken to America though and this aspect is the part of slavery that is highlighted at the moment. As societies developed some people (although not everyone) objected to this appalling treatment of other human beings and slavery was eventually abolished. The British navy was able to blockade slave ships and so enforce this abolition to some extent. So both things can be true, a country can be involved in horrific activities such as trading in slaves and in good things like enforcing abolition.

What about The Vikings, the Romans, the Mongols, the Persians, the Egyptians, the Israelites, The Spanish, Alexander, Napoleon, the Japanese, the Aztecs, the Incas, tribes in America who scalped each other I could go on but I guess it won't matter. All I can say is: I, and we, love you too Dr Jordan Bernt Peterson, may we be with you in your heart of hearts, as you are in ours.

Thank you for such lovely praise of my country. The recipe of being British is too complex to explain. The Scottish, Welsh, English and Irish people of Great Britain each think,feel and act very differently as a people, but we rub along quite well for the most part. Our differences make us the butt of jokes we all make towards each other. I think it's our thick skins , sense of humour and the knowing that we're all entitled to an opinion, even if we believe that opinion to be wrong.

@benrig89 2 года назад
@@winstonsmith7652 Yes, but the sad fact for America is you are simply following us. We are far more down the evil rabbit hole than you are. If you can get your so called Conservative Party to actually be conservative, considering they dominate the landscape in ways we can only dream about, then you will be the next great beacon of freedom in the history of the world. But I don't hold out hope, after seeing what BoJo did to your country. But even so, you have much more hope than we do, considering the reach the Marxists have over the Democrats, the culture, and the media.
@simplesimon8255

No it doesn't. Our independence rests on the total rejection of royalty and aristocracy, two things that Britain had at the time.
@benrig89
@benrig89 2 года назад
@@simplesimon8255 That is correct, but English common law stands in opposition to that, it is for the rights of the common man, and it was one of the reasons Cromwell prevailed over the monarchy, because he rode that tidal wave of 'common rights' against the idea of the divine right of kings. That tension between the monarchy and the English common law has been a theme of British politics for literally hundreds of years, at least up until the 20th century. I'm not saying our systems are entirely wedded to the British systems, I'm saying we took some of their best systems and made them our own.

@@benrig89 I think you are underestimating the reach of the Marxist lunatics in the UK. Our labour party is full of them, and many of our so called Conservative party seem to be following suit. Our media is the equivalent to CNN now, and we have 'reputable' news outlets still telling us that Kyle Rittenhouse killed 3 black men. As a big fan of the US I feel for you deeply, but we're only one step behind you, if at all.

As an Australian I am particularly thankful that we, and other Western democracies, (US, Canada, NZ etc) are inculcated with the principles covered in this talk. However, thanks to social media, academia (and its insatiable penchant for national self-loathing) and our lazy ignorant media, these principles are threatened. We owe our offspring (and ourselves) the protection of these principles. Thanks JBP for your invaluable role in such protection.

I agree, but disagree that its threatened. The principals essentially is gone.. it's gone because nobody will stop the social media, academia (and its insatiable penchant for national self-loathing) and our lazy ignorant media. Do you live on hope, or are you realistic? Do we really think things will get better, or will it get even worse? If it would get better, please give me the solution. The toilet has already been flushed mr. Storey. Sorry.

Unfortunately these principles are not shown or advertised anywhere. I live in UK for the last couple of years and I’m afraid the trend I see is these values are declining.. replaced by capitalistic consumption. I still see, thankfully, some British people still understand these values. I just wish it was more widespread and not considered arrogant to spread these ideas of balance, order and democracy among others

The Countries you listed are far more democratic than the UK We Still have "Peers of the realm" as Peterson says. An unelected upper house of parliament, First past the Post, Low Electoral turnout. Sometimes we need a little bit of national self reflection as opposed to blind nationalism. As for the media that is f****d everywhere. The American style of the last decade has been exported across the world now. It's even made it to mainland European countries now.

For all the fruits of your work that you have so generously shared with us over recent years, but for me personally, this one especially. The sentiments expressed restore and reinforce my hope that surely GB can successfully challenge and resist cancel culture. Thank you so much 🙏
