The problem you were talking about with the stem being stuck is called waterlocking and it can happen in any piece with a removable stem. It sucks, but it's not the end of the world, it'll still come out with some encouragement 😂

@cewpins I got a Titan Stem for this very reason. I refuse to use glass downstems in certain pieces I have, they will get stuck. My Illadelph is one. The Titan has options for 14 or 18mm, different length options, different tips, colors. Honestly one of the best buys I ever got.

Your story about going from downstem, to no downstem, back to downstem goes to show that your preferences change through experience. No matter how much research you do before you buy your first piece of glass, chances are your preference will change once you start getting experience in smoking. My very first piece of glass was a Grav Hammer, which I still have, then I bought a super nice $200 Pulsar recycler called "The Space Station". I was super hyped about it, and loved it when I got it, I smoked bowls and dabs through it until it broke. Then I started buying smaller, simpler bongs and found that I preferred them for their ease of use and cleaning. But then I bought another recycler for bowls only and fell back in love with them. Now I have simple, small rigs for dabs and the occasional bowl, and some recyclers for flower. I could never really convince myself to get a regular beaker with a downstem, it's just not my style. If you made it to the bottom of my essay of incoherent stoner bullshit, congratulations, your patience has earned you a metal 🥇 AND a cookie! 🍪

Kinda, I've owned about 20k worth of glass and once you find out what you like it's easy to just look at one and know if you'll like it or not. But my point is you definitely find a baseline of expectation and from that point everything you buy falls in line with those standards youve built up. There are pieces I used to want that I'll never touch now knowing what I knew from using so many styles.

Got 5 beakers and a backup downstem for each. My favorite downstem's that I have gotten 2 of recently, are "Vertical Slit Downstems." They're marketed for dabs mostly but I use them for flower combustion hits. The reason you will see these marketed for dabs, is that the downstem does not have an open end. The downstem will get clogged up with flower ash... UNLESS ... your slide/bowl has a built in glass screen. This will prevent the downstem from clogging up. These downstems do not produce the most percolation, but they reduce the amount of drag. You can tell immediately the difference in how it hits. So much smoother!!! I dont use perc's or anything fancy like that anymore for the reason Crewpins gave, you got to get the cleaning solution into the perc chambers, turn it upside down, get it to flow in right, Im getting older, lazier, this is a pain in the ass to me. Simple 12 inch beaker with no perc's just a removable downstem, 5 minute clean time everytime, and like the old saying goes - "Cleanliness is next to godliness."

Here's an old Stoner tip. Use chapstick on your glass on glass connections. So they don't stick.

Hey cewpins, suggestion for the all cart vape sesh; take the opportunity to try out the different types of oils you can find in carts now. Specifically the full-spectrum oils, HTE, and other concentrates. It’s not just distillates and hash oils anymore.

Great video 👌I find for me, I get the most issues from downstems in my straights and beakers from being waterlocked. If I haven't dried them thoroughly enough before use or if there is excess water inside the joint or around the downstem before use, the combination of excess water along with the vacuum created when pulling your piece, creates a fairly decent waterlock at times. I like to use warm water to help release as well. I will also reach down and loosen up the stem from the joint every couple of rips or so to prevent locking from consistent vacuums. Cheers Cew 👍

you gotta twist it out. not pull. put most of the force into a twisting rotation. and slight force on the pull while twisting. wont break again. happned to the finger handle on my bong bowl.

If you want to not break your downstem some comment on Reddit saved me for life. Instead of pulling straight up, wiggle the downstem up and down with moderate pressure pulling up. Do this every single time you take out your downstem. Got to the end of your video, twisting can make the downstem EXTRA stuck and from what I know hot water tightens the glass and cold water loosens it. So use cold or medium temp water if your downstem is really stuck.

Stoner tip for glass stuck in the seat for the downstem: tap on the outside wall of the downstem seat with a dab tool gently but firmly, the vibrations knock the glass out

Something I've noticed about beaker bongs is a lot of them have the down stem slightly angled for you to point it inward slightly to light it more evenly. As a lefty, I do not approve.

I recently got a Titan-Stem. I thought I was gonna hate it just because it's metal, but it's super rad and the mini-gun perc is so smooth. Can't tell a difference in it and glass. I recommend it.

I have one of these as a permanent replacement. Love it! Super versatile! For those that dont know, the Titan-Stem is a titanium metal downstem. It comes with many different attachment lengths that you can rearrange to almost any size to fit any beaker-bong-bubbler-ashcatcher-whatever you want or need!!! It has 2 female attachments 14mm /18mm and 2 different ends, a standard style with holes, and the other is what CoryHatfield calls the "minigun" or what most would just call a tree perc downstem. Now I did something really stupid with mine showing it off to a friend that it wouldn't break, throwing it from one end of the room too the other, running and jumping around and like an idiot, I stepped on it and the mini-gun/tree perc snapped and broke. Also dropped a beaker, smashed to pieces, Titan-stem was perfectly fine. Dropped it off the table & bathroom counter tops plenty of times, perfectly fine. SO unless you step on it, smash it with a hammer, or run over it with your car, it should be good to go! They go for around $35-$40 + shipping if online. They come in asortment of colors to match your fit. Mine is the T.S. v2.0, think they now have the T.S. v3.0.

@@thefunky_brassmonkey it's actually made of high grade aluminum, they just call it the titan stem to make people think it's titanium unfortunately. Everything else you said is very true though! I love mine way more than I thought. It's the best alternative to glass I've tried.

@BogSox that one is essentially the same in terms of build quality of the metal and machining, I just didn't dig the way the slide functions. It gets gunked up very easily if you don't clean everything often and clean it completely.

Use a rag and a small channel lock to get your down stem unstuck if it’s too rezed up, and don’t use the metal teeth of the channel locks use the rubber handles to give yourself more traction when twisting, In fact anything rubber you can use to give more traction instead of just your fingers, and don’t use fire it can overheat your glass and crack it

Dampen a square face cloth with hot water. Do a facial on the down stem. Come back in 5 mins and it will come off like it was never stuck. Never broken a down stem. Have 3 back ups for like 20 years.

I have the complete opposite opinion on twist vs pull. I completely agree on all prep like heat and iso. For a stuck stem I would pull it straight out by about a quarter inch as evenly as you can. I've broken so many by twisting. Glass doesn't have the best torsion resistance, but, it has excellent tinsel strength. It doesn't like to twist like it doesn't like to bend.

I've found the best way is to use your thumb and middle finger as a wedge, wedge them in little by little-- it'll pop right out. As long as you pull in the same direction the stem is, it's really hard to break.

Step 1 get your finger stuck in the downstem step two heat the bong glass around the downstem with a regular bic lighter while doing tht try and twist the downstem with your finger usually comes loose

For stuck glass, (not so much resin filth) I use a length of wood clothes closet rod along with some patience and tap tap tap. I just end up doing it for most, because it requires patience. And US Tubes make stock quality replacements. Most stock stems are garbage any who. Except the one ROOR I've got of course.

LOVE removable downstems. I need to get some with the different holes to try for some better hits! ALWAYS HAVE A SPARE. No, don't put it off until later. If you get your downstem stuck, put a dowel or even your finger in the stuck downstem and gently push side to side to loosen it before removing.

Haven't had a beaker in years. Bought one the other day and man it's great. Went to clean it after smoking and drop the down stem in the sink. It's a 2 stage and the stem still works but I will be upgrading it!

I had a large bong I didn't clean enough. Some resin got in between the downstem and the bong and basically welded together. I could never get it apart and eventually it broke the bong. I kept using the broken bong for way too long after that 😔

You drop a marble in the purple one to seal the circular hole, and force it through the slits. Most headshops lose the marble in the display case.

I got a Pro tip to get broken down stems out of bongs, use a screw driver wrapped with many rubber bands to reach into the hole, then just little movements left and right and slowly pulling up to removed a broken down stem! Only thing that worked to save my $100 bong

DUDEE you absolutely need the stainless steel down-stem its 4 pieces that you screw off and it seriously saved my life will never break, has amazing percolation and so easy to clean id highly recommend to anybody with a beaker

2 stage, beaker, half blue half clear, 10 inches in height, tree style perc, and an ice catch positioned perfectly to hold a lighter... why does that sound so familiar? The mouthpiece wasn't blue was it? The base blue? And the shaft clear? Cuz that was my first piece too if so.

Oh also I did the same thing with my lighter. Sadly I recently broke it when i was cleaning it. I was giving it a final rinse in the tub (420 is supposed to be safe but i still rinse it anyway) and it slipped out of my hand the pice is still usable but the tree perc snapped off inside the piece wish I could remove it I'd still it.

The only thing that sucks with downstems, is if ur piece uses specialty sized ones, it's a pain to replace, like my Sheldon black bong that I've been smoking for about 5 or 6 years now, And the showerhead part of my stem broke and u can't use any other stem than a Sheldon black one 😓

whacked the bowl clean off my piece with the tap when i was refilling it once and ended up cracking the beaker somewhat, works fine but it was tragic having a new bong that I couldn't use due to being without a bowl

I had a hisi that I'd have to slam against the side of the counter to dislodge the downstem to clean it every morning. Hit my bong on the counter every morning right underneath the lip of the downstem, until eventually broke it at the joint lolololol... it was either that or hit a dirty piece everyday, which wasn't gonna happen 😅

I hate frosted glass connectors, bring back the old school bong with rubber grommets. I hate frosted glass because I feel like I'm getting a very airy hit instead of instead of a proper one.

i love downstems also. one of my favorite pieces is a downstem piece. i agree they varity of percs is fun. pretty sure i hit my favorite downstem piece in a milk monday before it was a white one.

Always. Your downstem knows when you just cleaned your bong and got it ready for a nice hit of some killer product. It's like the Ring of Power, it can grant you access to incredible gifts, but it will also betray you at the most opportune moment. Like Cewps said, keep a spare handy!

Anyone have advice or tricks for a bong with a built in downstem? The whole thing is a tube (so the bottom of the bong isn't fatter than the top end) so it's very hard to clean the very bottom and the glass around the stem because nothing can reach it without losing the necessary elbow grease to rub residue away. Cleanability is going to be a major factor in my next glass purchase, unless it's only for vaping.

It's also easy to clean cuz I can just jam a plastic fork handle in there and spin it around and they can like stretch and like move the thing around about breaking whereas it's a lot harder to clean a glass downstem

my favorite piece was a beaker with no down stem, it was a bowl stem combo kinda thing. i loved it cause when you pull it to clear you weren't pulling through the water anymore and just made for a super unrestricted clear.
