He's only superficially evil. He has a good heart deep down, but learns that he can't be conventionally "good" in school, where he's constantly outdone by Metroman. This results in a character that wants to be a supervillain only because he wants to be the opposite of a superhero, and thus is way more invested in the drama and presentation of it all than actually doing anything of substance.

@@ratronald He's a bit like the Joker, except way way less evil. Joker, like Megamind, is only in it for the charade of tormenting Batman and Metro Man respectively. And just like Joker, Megamind would have no purpose without the hero there to stop them.

The same way this isn't simply a movie about a big headed alien dude. 😒 I'm an adult and adore the trolls movies, the messages in them are amazing and I wouldn't even compare the two cinematically. Andrew from the show big mouth follows suit. In other shows he would be the shy misunderstood nerd who needs a chance. But no hes rightfully called out for his creepy and pervy behavior. Notably the narrative forces him to shape up. A good lesson for "nice guys"

I’m going to take this opportunity as a shameless plug for one of my favorite Disney movies that (sort of) gets ignored: Hunchback of Notre Dame. Frollo has an obsession with Esmeralda and tries to put all of the blame on superior forces, he gives up all responsibility for his actions in shamelessly going after her. Hellfire (the song) sums his character up pretty nicely

To be fair mega mind was also a misunderstood loser. I feel like the story shows two sides of that personality type. The one that is a genuinely good person who just needs a chance and the other who is just an ass hole

@@seanslaysean7097 Absolutely, so many terrorists and school shooters were just like Hal, small, seemingly insignificant, and easily ignored, one may even call them misunderstood. The idea that given the right circumstances and experiences more people could have turned out like Hal is almost scary to think about.

By showing those two sides you don't outright vilify folks but show how a misunderstood loser can become the villain and turn into the evil incel but also how the misunderstood loser can rise above the darkness and become the hero. You show folks who may be struggling between these aspects the right path instead of drilling in folk's head that they are bad folks and that society is right to fully reject them.

You don't get hal, if you did you would empathize with him. He was taken advantage of by people.

I think it works much better without Hal being characterized as a sleezbag. It makes his character arc much better, and also doesn't undermine Megamind's intelligence, Hal's heel turn comes as a surprise to both the audience and Megamind.

'I was nice to you why won't you have sex with me'. And there's a large crossover with incels. There's a lot of videos reposting content from the reddit sub featuring men (sometimes women) raging at women who aren't interested in them or take too long to reply. And can't take no for an answer.

Good point. Though I still wish he has more depth than how he's portrayed in the film due to that fact. A reflection after he loss his power and jailed would be a nice touch. And to be honest, people with any slight "incel" quality would get dunked on like being a candy on an anthill and it did not help the rest situation in the slightest. It also doesn't help those who can grow out of it to do so, either and people keep whining when they're incressing in numbers as a result. The only reason they're not becoming a major threat is because they don't believe in struggle or channel their willpower correctly (Let alone ORGANIZE a movement or develop strategies and tactics to actually win). One reason I quit being one after I reached 20.

@@SagesRain in a way, she did become Megamind’s hero. She’s was empathic and kind towards him and treated him like a person when no one else ever had, ultimately starting his path to becoming a hero himself. Granted it was because she thought he was Bernard, at first. But when you get right down to it, Megamind experienced empathy and kindness towards himself, which had been completely foreign to him up until that point, giving the humanity within him a chance to fully come out. And during the final act of the movie, while Roxanne does act a little abrasive towards him for lying to her(rightfully so), she still treats him like a peer, a person, because she can at least recognize that he genuinely wants to stop Titan from destroying Metro City. And over the course of the final act of the movie, she begins to treat him like a true hero.

While Metroman probably is most similar to people who were "forced" into the "good life" like the child of a great actor feeling like they had to become an actor (not to diminish that kind of struggle as with all the mental health issues that celebrities face, it definitely shows money, fame and adoration don't make you complete), Megamind definitely views them all as actors to a grand play, objectifying them all as a singular role instead of a person. The movie really goes to great lengths to expose that all his excitement and pride of being a villain to Metroman is just surface level and once it's gone and he's stuck with himself, not only does he have to question what he has left, but even retroactively makes him realize he really wasn't happy about being a villain. He was just complacent and decided to roll with it to ignore how the fact that he didn't actually want to be "the bad guy."

@@morisatsuki3659 Glad you brought up Metroman, because he's the one who started all this for the same reason: he realized that the "Good Guy" role he'd filled for his whole life just wasn't fulfilling for him. this lead to Megamind eventually realizing that being the "Bad Guy" who always loses was equally unfulfilling for him.

@@senister14 I don't know, I think we understood him reasonably well. To be clear, when we say he's creepy we're not saying he's a serial killer, looking for a way to hurt her. We are, however, saying that he was very much drooling over and fantasizing about her, without any actual empathy for her as a person, and then throwing violent fits when things didn't go his way. It really wasn't hard to read how that was going to go.

Plus he was right, roxane never tried to get to know him besides taking advantage of him. He did like her, you could tell, plus he empathize for her that's why he became a hero for her. Yeah as an adult I know realize how bad of a person roxane is and how Hal was taken advantage of by everyone.

@@senister14 This sounds to me like projection. We never see anyone bullying Hal, everyone's nice to him, even when he's obviously lying to and trying to manipulate them. It seems kind of weird that the filmmakers would have a character always treated well on screen, and then have him directly say that he turned villain because he was rejected by this one girl, and then to conclude that he did what he did because every time the camera looked away he was getting beat in the subway. Also, the whole thing about doing the work and not getting the paycheck is exactly what we're talking about when we say he's an entitled creep. He had no desire to be a hero to help people: he's just a conman trying to emotionally blackmail someone into being with him. And Roxanne didn't promise him that, she didn't even ask anything of him. It'd be like if I mowed your lawn for you without asking, and then put a lien on your house. You didn't ask me to do that, you didn't even necessarily want your lawn mowed the way I did it -- I definitely don't have the right to force myself into your life like that, do something I decided to do, and then try to force something out of you in return. Like, of course that's not how it works -- imagine if someone you're not interested in decided to do something to make you like them? Are they entitled to your affection? Are you the bad guy if you still don't want to be theirs?

Specially considering in my experience the kind of people who would classify being selfish as evil are the kind of people who would also just attack autistic people as doing something negative for no reason. Autistic people aren't stupid and frankly because they have to deal with people such as yourself on the regular they're probably more aware that people are different and more aware of nuances than you are. Moving on from that, selfishness becomes evil as most things do when it brings harm to others. Its not inherently evil and is in fact on some level necessary for someone to exists in a healthy way. But it is a fact we tend to get taught about it like its this inherent evil, to be selfish is to always be bad. And that's the shit neurotypical people come up with, its right up there with the idea one should always forgive for your own sake, which makes people feel like they're the problem if they can't. Pretty gross you try to pin that neurotypical shit on autsitic people.

@@senister14 When she's real with him he not only won't listen to her warning but he's about to let her fall off a building. Never mind that he not only doesn't care to listen to her but also doesn't care that she's terrified for her life. She was a coworker, so why didn't he behave professionally with her? Why didn't he just ask, "Do you want to go on a date?" and then accept an answer? Even that can be unprofessional, but it's at least within reason. Look at the difference between Megamind and Hal getting rejected. Megamind is devastated, but he walks away. He does try to argue with her, but in the end, he listens and accepts her answer. He doesn't do anything to hurt or scare her. And she's not afraid of him (physically) harming her, even if she's not sure what his "evil plot" is. Hal terrifies her and then screams over her. He cares nothing about how scared she is or what she thinks or wants. He doesn't listen to a word she says. He does, at least, fly away. At first. But he also attempts to legitimately crush her with a bus later. Roxanne would not have been able to protect herself from that bus. And for what? Because she said they would never be a thing? Roxanne is never mean to Hal. She tries to maintain a professional working relationship with him. If he can't be real with her, how can she be real with him? Hal has the ability to be a good person and chooses not to. He treats her very poorly, from insulting her writing in the start (which she politely ignores to preserve a good working relationship) to inviting her, very unprofessionally, to play in a non-existent bouncy house (where exactly would that bouncy house have been in his apartment?) How many male coworkers invite you to their homes to play in a bouncy house? Would that not be incredibly off-putting? Hal can still be a good person if he actually chooses to better himself. Playing with something for a few weeks(?) and then giving up because you're not really interested in it isn't bettering yourself. That said, it's also wrong for Megamind to try and force him to be Metro Man. Nobody should be forcing anybody into any role. It's a huge point of the movie. NO character in the movie should be forced to be who others want them to be.

Exactly. Roxanne keeps a polite distance. That's what people usually do because there's no outright reason to be violent/angry without looking terrible yourself, but you can also see the red flags. Roxanne reacts very believably. When really, how much workplace harassment is she dealing with? It's not very professional to be inviting your colleague to your house to play in a bouncy house (which, let's be frank, wasn't real).

Hell in Hal's case he wasn't even observant enough to notice that yes she liked Metroman, but she didn't LOVE him and as a result was working from a faulty premise of what Roxanne is interested in romantically.

The thing is, though, that Hal didn't actually even want love; he wanted, liked mentioned, a trophy.

@@Sigart Hal of course, yes. But my point is that characters like Hal often are as I described.. once he got super powers he was still after the gal that he was obsessed with.. honestly he could have left and found someone else that would fangirl over him

@@Sunmourn Yes, that's true. But if you've seen a large part of the Nice Guys (tm) that are roaming the wild reaches of the web has a similar attitude. Even if they profess to want love, their reaction upon being rejected proves that they wer enever interested in love, just validation.

But to be fair, if you are a person that feels that no one is interested, and that no one loves you, no matter how hard you try, (even if you are trying in the wrong ways) over time you will become desperate. Your feelings of self worth will degrade, and you will be harsh on yourself, like he was when he suggested a stupid date idea, though he didn't realize he came off as desperate. In time you will crave validation so much that when you continue to be denied it, you will become a bitter and spiteful person. In time, love becomes the validation, it becomes the trophy so much so that the person stops caring what others want and feel like, they focus only on what they want so badly, it becomes a need.

And even when he initially tried to go good things, they were interpreted as bad. He was given no benefit of the doubt.

@@drysten887True, I didn't look at it that way because of the differences in how things go when acceptance comes their way. Hal is given a heroes welcome after his fight with MM but goes on to terrorize the city because one person didn't reciprocate his affections. Based on an assumption that he deserved it and that she was dating the previous superhero. Truth is I don't think Hal found meaning in life and grew up thinking might makes right, so when heroics didn't get him what he wanted he took it. Short of getting his crush to act like she loves him on condition of being an upstanding hero i don't think Hal would every act virtuously.

megamind also never really planned to have a relationship with roxanne. he was just trying to get away without her seeing him and didn't anticipate she would actually be interested in him (because she wasn't really interested in the real bernard).
