The Korg Prologue is a lovely little synth that has earned a permanent spot in my studio, and I wanted to talk about why that's the case. I also wanted to discuss ways that I try to think about gear purchases (though I also find myself GASing a lot). I hope this video doesn't come off as a synth flex and that it's helpful to you! thanks so much for taking the time to watch and listen!

This is a really useful review for me. Most are so techy, but for someone who likes to play at night to relax and is a tone crazy retro 60's and 70's child, its huge to hear what it really does and hear the personal experience. I own a system 8, microKorg, microstation, JDXi and a deepmind 12 and want this one for the pure analog sound to pretty much complete the studio (lol, that won't last.) For what I needed to know, this sealed the deal. Deeply appreciate the honest rambling, because it needs to be said so bad, and most won't say it. Nice patches by the way. Thanks big time.

I’ve been lusting over this synth since its release and finally had the opportunity to purchase one this week. I found a local 16 for $800……I LOVE IT!!!

Just wanted to say, I really appreciate your “ramble” of, in terms of synth buying, how much we get caught up in things that look cool or seem cool in theory versus how they play out in reality. I get caught up in that so much and not only forget the original purpose of wanting a poly, but i also overwhelm myself very easily. I been wanting a poly synth for a long time now and keep getting twisted in that “fomo” feeling of the shinier stuff. There are so many damn options. Trying things out in person helps so much. so many things seems awesome until you have one in your hands for real and it doesnt click, and the opposite works too where you fall in love with something you didnt expect Still looking for a poly though hah. There’s too many

I love the prologue too! My favorite part of synthesis is just what you said: Good, solid, analogue sounds. Perfect descriptor! :)

Thanks! Can't beat those basic sounds. The Prologue really does feel like a modern classic.

Same, I love the simplicity. I believe a lot of the criticism was like "this synth has too few features for the price".

It's got the synthpop vibe that I think I needed. I don't know how to put it other than saying that the Prologue sounds exactly how I'd want an analogue synth to sound.

Nice talk and demo! Though it’s not “for me”, the prologue has a nice layout and feature set and makes some good sounds. I agree that it’s a combination of sound and workflow that lets you know that a synth is the right one, since you want it to be an extension of both your inner voice and your nervous system. So, besides hearing about what you like about the prologue, it was good to hear about what you don’t like about the Medusa.
@JoshIsMakingMusic

Thanks! You're right about the synth being an extension of your inner voice. I really wish I could've clicked with the Medusa. But it just wasn't right for me!

This was a great video! I have had a prologue 8 voice for about six months now and still love it like I did on day 1. It will be a permanent fixture in my studio! You make some great points about the immediacy of using this synth for sound design and I agree with you. I'm certainly not a top shelf programmer but I like the notion of making my own sounds as I know they will be unique to my music. Even the process of developing a sound is something I view as being a creative exercise so I don't mind losing a little studio time when I'm in the mood to design. And it's nice that the design process is straightforward. I also agree with your comments about an instrument really clicking with a person or not. I've picked up some keyboards that have been awesome - but only in other peoples' hands. It's always a huge disappointment when you turn something on for the first time and start to play, only to know pretty quickly that there's no connection. But the reverse is also true - when you get into an instrument in those first few minutes and you get lost, there's nothing like that feeling! Anyway, enough rambling. Thanks for doing such a well thought out video and featuring one of my favorite keyboards in the process. Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much! I've also had the feeling of an instrument not connecting with me when others can make it truly sing. It's frustrating. But when you find yourself really clicking with a piece of gear, it's an awesome feeling!

Does anyone also have the problem that the modulation of the lfo is still "hearable" even when i turned its "int" Control completely to the left, so to zero? i have that problem when i send it to cutoff, shape and pitch. I have my prologue for some weeks now, but i did not realize that until today.

For some reason this synth shot up in price. I paid $799 brand new in Nov 2019, but to be fair it was on a $200 sale. I like it a lot but I don't think I would have paid the $999 asking price at the time, so the $200 discount came at just the right time. It would be very difficult now because there are just so many options - never thought I would ever say that.

True, I bought mine 16 voices in 2020 at $1300 in local store, now $1600+ on internet. I make a song for my duo group only using this, a drum vst and a bass guitar.

That may be true, and if you like working that way, great! For me though, the physical interface makes all the difference. I work on a computer all day. The last thing I want when I get home is EVEN MORE SCREEN TIME and fussing within a big complicated piece of software. I love my Prologue.

Of course you can. Only with a high performance plugin like Omnisphere though. Then you have to worry about CPU performance, then upgrading your computer to keep up while already spending the money on Omnisphere. If you have a cracked Omnisphere, then you have to worry about your DAW crashing and patches not saving. Not to mention not having physical knobs to turn. Also being able to use this outside of your DAW is a plus.
@HOLLASOUNDS

@@bonymontana7100 I have Reason 12, MPC Beats, Abalten 11 which all struggle to function properly due to CPU and the way modern Daws use the grafics card like ram. The 10 plus year old Reason 4 is the only Daw where I can create literally any sound on that can be made by physical sythersizors. I'd like to actually be able to use a modern Daw but there increased complexity means that its alot more difficult to get good sound out of an average machine. I'll have to upgrade to a PC costing at minimum £2000 and I dont think it will actually equal better music creation. I hardly use plugins in the modern Daws. If I need more advanced EQ and processing I'll export the stems from Reason 4 into Abulten 11.

True, you can do a lot more, I have all the famous soft synths vst and samplers. Still value wise, resell value, hands on controls, easy to work with, keyboard and computer integration is so so cool. Stereo Pads vs soft synth pads, whoah! Plus not deep menus. Still a big price to pay vs soft synths.
