IS THE KORG PROLOGUE EVEN WORTH IT? Prologue vs Prophet Rev2 vs Minilogue XD vs DeepMind 12 and more

How does the Korg Prologue Analog Synth compare to the Sequential Prophet Rev2, The Korg Minilogue XD, The Behringer DeepMind 12, The Roland System-8, The ASM Hydrasynth, and The Novation Summit? Is it even worth buying an analog synth with only 1 LFO? I tried to keep this feature comparison limited to Poly-synths under $2,000. I didn't mention the Moog Matriarch because it is Paraphonic, not Polyphonic.

Came to this video to help me decide between a Rev2 and a Prologue, but got so much more from this video. Your detailed explanations and how you decide on which synth is for you helped a lot. Also that Xenomorph canvas is incredible 👌🏾 I'll subscribe for that alone.

Hahaha I'm glad you love her! 🖤 I really appreciate your kind feedback. Both synths are incredible pieces of hardware, but for me the sound of the filter, the VCO's and all the user oscillators and FX put the Prologue over the top. Could totally see someone feeling the exact opposite lol.

@@VultureCulture I'm using Logic ProX. It has some nice sounding soft synths. Can you reccomend a hardware synth that would interface well so I could use its knobs to control the soft synths knobs? Maybe a hardware synth (Korg:)) that also sounds good on its own? Thanks for your channel and sharing your research.
@VultureCulture
@VultureCulture 2 года назад
That's tough. Omnisphere had great hardware integration, but if you're using other synths like the amazing Alchemy in Logic then you can use any midi controller with knobs and faders and midi learn them. If you do choose to go with a hardware synth, definitely go with something you like the sound of. Don't be afraid to go cheap if you plan to use it mostly to control soft synths.

Great video sir. I just bought a Minilogue XD for a lot of the same reasons to bridge the gap between my crazy software synth library. Wish it had 8+ voices though. Although I could pick up a module version as well for 8 voices all day for less $ than the Prologue. What we need is a Prologue 16 XD with 3 LFOs, dedicated sub-osc/noise, 64-step sequencer, and more filter options!

Great video. Korg Prologue is an underrated synth with a few handicaps but a hell of a lot of sonic potential. For the $$, it's hard to find something in that price range that can produce the magic it can unleash. You mentioned the drifting voices and I agree its a big plus.

I think it's great! Wish the reverb was stereo. I don't think it's as versatile as a Minilogue XD - but the thing it does, it does really well. Nymphes and Typhon together would pretty much cover your bases for analog.

Good explanation. I think the big takeaway that people need to really consider when watching overviews or comparisons is keeping in mind what they’re looking for a synth to do and how it fits in with the rest of their hardware and software. And it makes sense if you want a poly with VCOs that plays nice with Omnisphere. If someone doesn’t already have the $500 software synth then yeah, maybe something like a Rev 2 makes more sense on the sound design side. Or Hydrasynth. Or even a Peak. Now that they’ve added user wave tables it’s super flexible if you don’t already have a software system that covers the same ground. Assuming someone actually cares about the sound design side. Good job on keeping this in context of fitting in with the other tools you want this to work with. Most important is that an instrument inspires someone to play. So if you have something that sounds good that you can just mess around with away from the computer, which also adds a good tactile interface on the software side, that’s pretty handy. I find software synths super handy but often incredibly boring to work with without the right interface so I get way more use out of some mono synths that are less capable but just more fun to use.

Excellent comparison video! I have a (noob) question: I thought I heard you describe the Mini XD as a 4 oscillator synth. Are you adding 3rd party dual oscillators available for the multi-engine to the 2 existing analogue VCOs to get 4? I've had an XD for 2 years now and I still have a ton to explore with the default 3. Thanks!

I notice you made a comment regarding static or something while using the triangle waveform on the VCO. I noticed this on mine as well. What do you make of it?
@VultureCulture
@VultureCulture 3 года назад
Couple possibilities. One is I probably shouldn't have been pushing the level too hard, I think I might have been causing some internal clipping by turning the volume all the way up. Another is the wave-folding of the triangle is caused by something like foldback distortion. There could be some minor miscalibration causing it to distort. Either way it's subtle enough that it's kinda cool to chalk it up to the randomness of analog gear.

I own the hydrasynth and summit along with an elektron analog heat. The hydrasynth does not emulate analog as well as the summit yet I can run the hydra through summit prefilter and/or the heat to help with the saturation/character of the hydra's digital signal. Trust me the hydrasynth is what you want in a digital synth though. I learned synthesis at an extremely fast rate with the hydra in a way vsts could not show me. The oscillascope display helps a lot on top of the routing interface which is easy to comprehend. Pretty soon I will be audio processing and working with some of the semi modular functions of the synth. Great product. Also the summit........is incredible. Little light menu diving but it is very easy to get an initialized patch going and sounding great. I like the reverb on the summit almost as much as the strymon blue sky......

I can't decide between getting the Minilogue XD and Bass Station II (possibly both) or only getting a Hydrasynth or maybe the DeepMind 12. I'm still fairly new to synths. Purchased the Roland Gaia a little while ago Thoughts or suggestions on these synths?? Two smaller synths XD and BS II or the bigger more complete Hydra or DM 12? If all of my synths burned in a fire and I had to rebuy out of the synths you mentioned, this is the order in which I would buy them: Minilogue XD Hydrasynth Deepmind 12 Bass Station The Hydra is a beast but might be a little too complex for what you're looking to do. I think the Minilogue or DM12 are the best beginner options. I recommend trying to spend as little as possible for your needs at first, and make purchases slowly to fill gaps in what you have covered sonically. Hope that helps!

Interesting review with a clear point of view, thanks. About the Moog One (<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="1320">22:00</a>), there are also people who buy a Ferrari and have it serviced every half a year. It’s a known selling fact that the suffering creates more attachment if you spent huge $$$ 😉… and I find the car comparison not that wacky, more cylinder/ hp = more oscillators. But then if you compare that one oscillator of an original Oberheim SEM (or even the nice SSM oscillators from the Polysix) to the modern ones, you understand that it needs 16 today to achieve the same blast.
@VultureCulture
@VultureCulture 2 года назад
Good comparison with the car for sure. The Moog One appeals to a certain kind of buyer - not a typical musician, which is what I'm focused on and who I'm talking to. No doubt the Polysix and SEM have incredible oscillators, but there's nothing in principle stopping makers of synths from creating just as great if not better sounding gear nowadays. Always hard to tell how much nostalgia factors into what we hear. Thanks for the comment!

The value of simplicity is underrated. I had a Minilogue found that its limitations were the biggest feature. It was so easy to make something that just sounded great. It was very inspiring to play. While the Rev2 has more bells and whistles, who's to say that it has the right amount? You can always wish it had something more. And that's where software shines. Today got my new Behringer DeepMind 6 (bought it cause of size and a little bit lower price instead of 16). And yes, this is my first hardware analogue synthesizer, but I know the basics and can create some sounds. But, with DeepMind it's reeeally hard, I don't know why, but it has like too many options and I think I'll need about a month to learn just how to use it. I hope this was right choice and I can use DeepMind to do what I want. I've tried Minilogue XD in a shop and it was much easier to create a sound in some minutes, whereas DeepMind is really harder to get the thing you want from.

I'm surprised there's not more people covering it. To my eye they're the obvious choices for someone looking for an analog poly. The good news is they both sound great. I think in the video I say this but basically, I prefer the tone of the Prologue/filter, however I have a bunch of synths so the lack of modulation isn't huge to me. If I had to get only one analog poly it would probably be the Rev2.

I'm in the same position, Omnisphere user wanting to buy a hardware synth for control (hate the midi controllers with unlabeled knobs, improper layout, etc) and also to have my first irl synth for that use in itself. The main thing that stops me from getting the Prologue is the lack of aftertouch, which is a must for me and one thing I've been lacking in my current setup (been using a digital piano with weighted keys). So I'm thinking Rev2. I was thinking Summit for a while but I tried it out at a store and wasn't crazy about it. Has nothing to do with the digital oscillators though, early on I was wanting analog specifically but I've learned I don't care at all about that, and my dream synth is a Virus TI but $3000 for the keyboard version...will probably end up getting the $2000 module later, but for now I really need a synth-style large keybed with aftertouch. I suppose I could get an Arturia KeyLab but $500 is a lot to spend on a midi controller. The Rev2 seems to be the best option for me in price to quality and with a great keyboard. Deepmind is a great choice but is not for me layout-wise. I love the Prophet layout, probably because one of my early soft synths I spent a lot of time with was a Prophet 5 clone (memorymoon's Messiah). The Minilogue XD module is in definite consideration for a future purchase as well. Any thoughts?

I think the Rev2 is a great choice and the best quality/value on the market. The ASM Hydrasynth has poly aftertouch which is pretty incredible, if you don't care about analog. The Prologue responds to aftertouch now, just the keyboard doesn't send it, for what it's worth.

Hydra has phenomenal versatility. But it will never sound like the Prologue in reality. Which is enough to melt your face right off lol. Certainly hydra can produce many things -- but without a lot of tweaking its very difficult to shirk it's fairly flat sound. Prologue was designed for immediate performance, complementary to larger digital stations. In that light, it's simple power is a far greater asset than the pure feature hunters would like to admit. If money is tight however and you're looking to tweak for months on end, Hydra doesn't disappoint. Arguably two different market leans entirely. The performer and the synth head.

I have the first minilogue, the XD which I bought because I thought it covered what the prologue could do in terms of sound quality and types, at least on paper the sound engines are virtually the same, and the XD appears more capable with motion sequencing. One day I had the chance to side by side compare both a prologue and moog one side by side in a quiet room. I was blown away by the Prologue. The sound is much more analog and inspiring than the moog. The Prologue is insanely alive, where the moog one has a high quality to it, its overall dull by comparison. That simple. For the price the moog is a loser. If I had I had infinite money and tIme to waste on it, sure I would have a moog-one besides my better synths. So after I was finished comparing the both, and already full-well knowing how the XD sounded since I bought that one months before the Prologue, I knew the Prologue had at least one fundamental difference that was obvious in it's VCO's compared to the XD. When you turn either of the frequency knobs on the Prologue versus the frequency knobs on the XD, it is like night and day in the way the pitch changes on the Prologue......its the blade runner "effect". You cannot get this on the XD no matter what you try. So it appears the Prologue is either sampling the knob position a lot faster and/or with finer resolution or there is a fundamental difference in the VCO's. I haven't dug any deeper into why this is, like look at the schematics of both, but I know other prologues I've played since buying mine respond the same way, and other XD's I've played since dont respond like that at all, and just like most of all the other synths do, the XD responds flatly, dulley with no life as you sweep the pitch up or down. Try doing this on a Prologue and you'll understand why this is the best sounding, best deal hands-down for the price for a "real" analog polysynth that uses full-on VCO's and has patch memory unlike so many of the Behringer except the deepmind. I have a deepmind too, and while I love it, it doesn't exceed or equal anything to the Prologue except some modulations routings and other minor but still useful features. I also have the Rev2 and prophet 10. The Rev2 has a great sound and can get somewhat close to that of a real vco if you program it correctly, and the synth is very inspiring. The prophet 10 is an equal to the Prologue in my opinion as far as the particular type of musical inspiration a real vco synth gives you, and actually so far I have been able to more easily create better, more inspiring, evocative textures / patches on the Prologue than the P10. I'm pretty sure my P10 has it in it to match up to that level, but just saying that for each hour I've spent so far on sound design using each synth, I've achieved much better results using my Prologue. Btw, for most sounds the XD is equal in that is matches up pretty much exactly to the Prologue. But overall, the Prologue is superior and for some sounds the XD will never match up to the Prologue. Prologue is defintely worth the money for theb16 voice version.

personally i own the rev2 16voice and like the fact that its multimbral. You can split and or layer patches on it wich means you have in fact 2, 8voice rev2’s if you own the 16voice one. Thats the smart marketing of the rev 2. When you layer the 8 voice you only have 4 voices per layer. Im not sure but i think the prologue does not have this function. What sold me on the rev2 tho is the modulation slots. Its possible to controle features with other features. And above that you have a audio modulation env. I think you made the right decision. The Prologue sounds amazing and it's $1500 for 16 voices. People complain about lack of modulation options and features (e.g. just one lfo) etc but I think the macro oscillator mitigates that to a greater extent because you can get the waveforms you would typically aim for via a modulation matrix right at the start of the signal flow. You don't need a modulation matrix if you have a macro oscillator. Or rather, you need it less.

Another channel Pink Buddha Academy told this about the Rev2 quote: I love the sound of the Rev2. Don't get me wrong. But I found it hard to integrate into a mix unless I STARTED with a Rev 2 sound. Because it's so hard to program, esp on the fly. I ended up getting to scroll through posts to find something close. To then change, and that's really time consuming. Also, many of the Rev2 sounds are SO thick, and rich, that they take up too much space in the mix of a song. Imho, it's really a synth that wants to be the showpiece - So due to some overlooked design flaws, like the small screen and that there are no very important volume control buttons/sliders mapped, to tweak the individual layer volume - he actually needed to sell it.. The Vulture Culture channel shows his reasons why he opted for the Korg Prologue, but then again I hear people say: If I could only get one - it would be the Summit, without a doubt. The REV2 is a close second. The Prologue isn’t even a consideration. I’d get a DM12 before a Prologue. I’d get a System 8 before a Prologue. I would get a Matriarch before a Prologue and it’s only 4 voice. Honestly, I’d keep my MicroFreak over a Prologue and I’m not just saying that. I’ll gladly take a look at the Prologue revision if it has a switchable filter, aftertouch, a real mod matrix and more LFO’s - So go Novation Summit I guess!? lol..

I will just throw some more for who is interested.. So with the prologue you currently cannot combine delay and reverb. And there is no way of syncing the arp to the BPM. They could also better make a knob instead of switch for DRIVE. And there should have been a highpass filter knob instead of LOW CUT switch. Combining all this info and to stay within some kind of budget and not owning any plugins like omnisphere, getting into the world of synths with just one jack of all trades with a good balance between things like price, quality, usability and durability I start to understand why the fully digital Summit comes out on top, no pun.. lol..

Just one question. Do you have Omnisphere? 😄 Jk. Great video. I love my prologue!! How closely do you think it can emulate a Juno or Jupiter?
@VultureCulture
@VultureCulture 2 года назад
Closer than you'd think, it certainly makes the types of sounds you could make with a Juno - but it's not a 1-1 recreation or anything.

I bought a korg prologue used for $800. Prophet rev2 8 voice is like $1800 used. Why does everyone compare these?
@VultureCulture
@VultureCulture Год назад
I think it's because a Rev2 8 was the same price as a Prologue 16 - and for a lot of people that $1,500 price point was a sweet spot. Now the prices are all wonky.

@@VultureCulture Wow, I'm checking out the market and buzz about the prologues online - between the limited availability from the supply chain issues and the rumors of discontinuation.... I'm glad I got mine when I did. Was considering upgrading to the 16, but considering the 16 is $400 higher than when I was shopping a couple years ago, yikes! I wonder if it's really being discontinued, and if so, if we'll see an epilogue or prologue 2, because I LOVE this synthesizer.

I came for the synths, but when I saw the awesome H.R Giger background I said "this man has taste", so I stayed and watched. Curiously, I am between Rev2 and Prologue for summer 2021 but although the Sound Designer in me wants to go for the Rev2, I must agree that I am towards Prologue because of that "Blade Runner" feeling and the overall sound of it. Spending money on equipment has to make sense, and for me a digital synth nowadays is not something I'd go for. Regardless, that's just my opinion. Thank you for the video. You won my subscription. Peace \m/

The Prophet Rev2 Oscillators are DCVCOs they're analog VCOs but the knob twist is sending digital signal controlling the VCOs. If you said this and I missed it then cool... crack a brew for me too
@VultureCulture
@VultureCulture 2 года назад
The digital part of the DCO comes from digitally controlling the tuning, so in that sense the Rev2 has analog DCO's. Cheers! 🍻

@@VultureCulture If you need some analog VCO tuning instability on Prophet Rev2 you can add it in controllable way with OSC SLOP in OSCILLATORS. At least it works great in UNISON play mode to create fuzzy timbre like making SuperSaw from plain Sawtooth.
@VultureCulture

The slop, or now vintage function, is one of the most important features on the Rev2 and something that feels missing from my vintage dco synths like the Alpha Juno 2 and JX-3P.

The P12 looks/sounds like a really cool synth. I own two vintage hybrids, and they're really neat. Overall it depends on how much the whole VCO thing means to you. In terms of synthesis modulation the P12 slaughters the Prologue lol

Minilogue or Minilogue XD? A lot of people love DM12, but I haven't suggested it because I do get a decent number of comments complaining about build quality. I feel more comfortable recommending the Minilogue XD because it sounds amazing, is VCO-based and stood the test of time so far. Just my opinions tho
