Why I'm angry about these container trees

I bought these two 'Whitespire' birches for the driveway containers, but what I found when I planted them is not great.
'Whitespire' is hardy from zone 3 to 6. I'll plan to overwinter them in these pots for at least a couple years. I'll have to move the pots to clear snow, but they will remain outside for winter. I'll add a thick layer of mulch to the top of the container for winter.

When I've inadvertently purchased root bound trees like you showed here, I placed the entire root ball in a large bucket of water for several days. That allowed the tree to take up much needed moisture, and it vastly helped in "releasing" the roots and made it easier to pull the roots apart before planting. I hope your birch do well for you!

And this is why I will only be buying bare root from now on. I have taken the time to root wash a number of containerized trees. It takes way way too much time and effort and is so stressful on them (but leaving them root bound isn’t an option either because they are doomed). And I’ve purchased very expensive trees from very reputable nurseries! They were awful!

We need to see more videos like this- I had the same issue with trees I bought. So upset, totally too low in pot and girdled roots.. I had a shrub the same way. I took it out and that was so bad I actually watered all the dirty off it- I found THREE shrubs all intertwined together. They never did much and recovered once I got them separated. So sad...Never bought from that grower again-and it was a grower!
@TheImpatientGardener
@TheImpatientGardener 2 года назад
You did the right thing ... essentially bare rooting a shrub that's in that condition can help get to the bottom of the problem. I don't like to do that when they are fully leafed out but sometimes it's a gamble worth taking.

A very similar thing happened to me with a beauty berry bush. Even worse I wasn’t around when it was planted for the first time in a raised bed. Luckily for me and the bush, I decided to relocate it a year later. When I dug it up the roots looked like it had been planted a day ago and were circling around as if they were still In The container! Grrrr! So I did my best to flair and separate the roots. Now the bush is trying it’s best to grow in its new place. I’m ever hopeful that someday it will recover. Lesson learned, to check the plant at the nursery before buying.

Trees are so expensive so I hope the garden center has some type of guarantee. You are brave to keep them. I would have returned them or at least emailed some photos to the garden center because it's such a pain to have to take them back later and I'm sure they would want some type of proof. I don't return anything where I think the problem could have been user error, so it's rare that I ever take anything back.

I see that label. Yeah I can attest that Bailey's Nursery can have questionable stock. I planted a Dakota Pinnacle birch and it thrived for 2 years before completely failing with no warning - all of the sudden the trunk snapped off. It looked like it was infested with canker near the base of the tree - in a region that hardly sees canker proliferate (SW Montana). I have to assume the tree came with it. These are usually pretty expensive trees - a #10 Dakota Pinnacle was retailing for about $165 - you assume that you're getting a quality product. Their container stock seems to be the most sketchy - I have planted many a bare root from Bailey and it does wonderful, but their containerization process, their soil medium, the embarrassing number of severely root-bound trees and shrubs (I assume so they look bigger and more enticing) is unfortunate. I feel your pain Erin - stuff keeps getting more and more expensive and the quality is just s*** sometimes.

Been struggling with this theory forever for every plant, even perennial flowers. But I always see you tubers just popping them in holes roughly same size and having glorious results! Hi Erin, the birch look great in those pots! I suspect you’ll find that they will fill those pots with roots pretty quickly compared to the dogwoods. Most multi-stemmed birch are 4-5 separate trees planted together when small. They’ll look great in your landscape when they need more room than the pots provide. Everything is looking beautiful!

Yes, these are definitely individual trees planted together. I’d love to get three years in the pot if possible but I’d be ok with two.

I follow quite a few gardeners, and you are one of my favorites. What a treat to pass you in the street and say hi today. 😊

Was that you? Thank you for saying hello! Sorry I was totally zoned out. (On my way to grab lunch and I guess I had food on the brain.)

Would a slight staking of the crossed trunks straighten / uncross them in time or is that not an option ? I ask because I don't know 🤷🏼‍♀️... love multi trunk trees , and a big beautiful pot .. loving the pretty annuals under planted too 💛💕

Your trees are lovely. Last spring I finally planted a Japanese maple that had been in a pot for sixteen years. It has done well. It's now close to six feet tall. I guess I'm just lucky!

I this Japanese maples do really well in pots and I absolutely would have gone that direction if it weren’t quite so sunny in this spot.

Now I’m wondering if I should have done more to the roots of the shrub I planted this Spring. Maybe I should pull some soil back to look. It’s putting on new growth. Is root girdling something that stays silent and then causes a problem several years down the line?

Could you have done anything at the garden center prior to purchase to know the state of these trees? How do I, as a novice gardener, avoid what happened to you? How do I buy “good trees”?
@TheImpatientGardener
@TheImpatientGardener 2 года назад
That's a good question. I suppose I could have rooted around at the top of the pot a bit, but that's sort of questionable behavior and honestly this place has a great reputation so I just trusted that they'd be good to go.

Buy bare root! That’s all I will be doing from now on. I’ve seen this way way too often. Basically every single tree and shrub I’ve planted (and a few that I’ve dug up after someone else has planted them).

I agree with bareroot. Been burned too often. Even if you pop the plant out and see a “nice”root system, nothing says it wasn’t root bound before they potted it up. You could still have a big root circling the trunk until it strangles the tree. Ive gotten nice mail order trees from a few places and have a larger choice of trees.

@@TheImpatientGardener Carol Klein recommends taking plants/trees out of pots when you are at the nursery for this reason
@ilyxr

Worked for a nursery for 5 years - you are WELL within your rights as a customer to pull the plastic away and check the root zone. Not just trees - check your perennials, your shrubs and even annuals on clearance. They're likely on clearance because the root zone has become unmanageable. You can then decide if you want to take this project home and be more informed about what you're purchasing. In the same way that plants can be severely root-bound, garden centers will sometimes try to sell newly plugged annuals and perennials that may have not rooted at all. Houseplants can sometimes come with hardly any rooting of a cutting. Checking the plant pots is not taboo - if the root zone is hard as a rock or is crumbling with no stability, you need to know this.

You would not be a birch if you had done what you should have done: RETURN THE TREES! Hard to imagine a nursery that does not guarantee satisfaction. While you may have taught viewers how to avoid buying bad trees, it would have been better to teach us not to accept our mistakes. It's a cultural thing, I know. Some of us were raised not to make trouble. It also would be a hassle taking them back and delaying the project, but ...

Bummer about the trees. Safari Dawn was at my garden center! I will look forward to see how they progress in your driveway pots.
