This is one of the reasons I love the Team Trainiac platform. I can benefit from the wisdom you gained making the mistakes so I don't have to. Quality, science based training that helps me progress and keeps me injury free.

I do something similar (and cheaper) with the FirstBeat technology in most Garmin fitness watches. It yells and nags at you as to when to speed up, slow down, run/bike longer or shorter, when to go to sleep, when and how long to rest, and what types of exercises to do. The end result is considerably longer and faster runs/bikes yet in an enjoyable manner instead of feeling dead tired.

I don't usually comment, but having been an elite athlete in skiing, biking, and running, I have found that I went through the same experience that you are going through, there is that burnout that you go through, it is finding that thing made it fun and engaging for you. Another words you have to find the reason other than the competition, that brought you to do it in the first place. And as your doing be ok with who are as just a person on this planet. I wish you all the best on your journey.

I'm surprised that you haven't associated any of your low hormone/nutrient stats with your diet. I would be cautious with the over reliance on supplementation, you can and should get all of your nutrients from natural, unprocessed food. This is especially true while resting. I understand that when you have a high training load a supplement can be an efficient, nutrient dense way of consuming something but it should be the exception, not the norm. Switch to a balanced, whole food diet and watch your body thrive.

@@bassed2pt0 Not in my opinion, the amino acid balance in meat, fish and dairy is far superior to plants. Its too complicated to work out which plants you need to combine to provide adequate supply of all amino acids. Animal protein is referred to as "first class protein" for a reason. The crisis you are going through is most unfortunate but from the outside it is not entirely surprising. Your professional and athletic achievements over the years have built your business and "brand" -- but also served to create even higher expectations, both your own and those of others, and the compounding effect of this with life stress (like for anyone) is bound to take its toll. The challenge is to find a healthy balance, so that expectations and resources are in alignment. In your case this is especially hard when everything revolves around triathlon and you are trying to cover all dimensions (athlete, role model, coach, expert, motivator, ...). Adding ever-higher goals and aspirations (e.g. Kona qualification) just makes things more acute. Finding balance means simplifying your life and removing unhelpful distractions from all sources. Taking this crisis seriously is not about a shelf-full of supplements, it is about a fundamental rethink of where you are going with your business, your sporting ambitions and life generally (all combined of course with healthy living practices). This may require some professional help to be successful but is certainly achievable. Again, it needs to be comprehensive and not seen as calling for a quick fix in one area or another. Good luck.

This video is absolutely amazing, as someone who was 330 lb and lost 160 lb to be 170, I feel this on another level. When you start training and you start to fall in love with it especially after having never done it in your life it becomes an addiction. Addictions by their nature are bad things, when you lose a lot of weight or you get really into fitness your addictions shift from using food as a coping mechanism to using exercise as a coping mechanism. What people don't realize is that both do significant damage to your health. It's super easy to think that training every single day has to be healthy because you're doing something good, you're exercising. Even if for the first year and a half, like with me, all you get is gains on gains on gains. Eventually they slow down super drastically and you will plateau. Everyone likes to say it doesn't happen to them, and even if it didn't happen to you I will guarantee you you're making gains at a much slower pace if you are working out every single day. I've been in a position where I did push/pull/legs lifting weights 6 days a week, on top of that was on my bike for at least an hour doing something medium to high intensity 7 days a week. The most I would have a rest day would be a 45-minute interval training medium intensity, on Sunday when I didn't lift. You feel like an absolute King because you're out there killing it every single day but what you don't realize is you aren't building a foundation you're just building a pile. You want to build a foundation of fitness that's going to take you to the next level so that you can compete in your part-time, or achieve new lifts, it comes down to your ability to rest because resting is what allows your foundation to set, you can't build a house on top of wet cement. It's been incredibly hard for me to realize this and even now I freak out and get anxiety on certain rest days, and if I'm eating maintenance and not working out I feel like I'm going to get fat. I think the fitness industry does a lot of negatives with all the good that it gives. It pushes a lot of body images that will never be achievable because these are people with unnatural genetics. It pushes a lot of Lifestyles that aren't achievable because these people work out full time, it's their job. It pushes a go go go mentality because that's what sells supplements and programs and gym memberships. The online fitness world is a marketing tool worth billions of dollars, and it's very easy to fall victim to it because working out has always been something everyone says his healthy. Just know that if you're out there and you've lost a lot of weight and you're scared of the rest day and you're scared of the rest day causing you to get fat, everyone goes through that. A recovery ride is not a rest day, a Zone 2 or zone 1 workout is not a rest day it's a workout(even if they can be positive to training). Start trusting your body start trusting yourself to have the self-control to not fall back into your old ways and take that well-deserved rest. Even if you've only lost 1 pound, you're making progress, instead of allowing a reward to be a pizza, keep the healthy eating, and let your reward be a day off of working out. Thank you for this video, more people need to be honest about the impact that never stopping and always moving forward has on the body. You might not notice you're in pain, until the one day when you get that injury or you finally have that overtraining catch up to you it becomes damn near impossible to get it back.

Paul may I suggest you consider the following. Even if we eat perfectly we will never get all the required minerals and vitamins from food. the RDA's for minerals and vitamins are established on someone being a General Population not someone that is training heaps or living in an area where there is almost no sun or someone that has some stress and hormonal in balance. Also the RDA is developed for General Population in perfect health. they are not relevant the RDA is to low for optimum health. I am a 55 year old AG racing in worlds 7% body fat RHR 36 been doing LCHF for 6 years, I take 12 different supplements all from practitioner only food based supplements not synthetic and I have testing to ensure that they are being absorbed by the body and get blood work done every 6 months to review impact. I respect your comments but depending on each persons situation supplements even if eating well can be significantly helpful if they can be sourced accordingly and they can be absorbed by the body. have a good day. PS I dont buy any supplements from a chemist or on Amazon they are all directly from the manufacturer and all practitioner only brands My wife is a practioner so we only get the best quality supplements money can buy.. Have a great day.

@@AndreObradovicAus supplements can be useful in addition to a good diet, not as a replacement for one. I think that's the point being made by some people on this comment thread, he talks a lot about his supplements but doesn't analyse anything to do with his dietary intake. Is he making the assumption his diet is already perfect? Also the assertion that all high training volume atheletes need supplements is a bit of a sweeping generalisation, Eliud kipchoge and David Rudisha managed to reach the top of their sport eating a simple rural Kenyan diet with minimal use of supplements. It probably is possible to get everything you need through eating whole foods, but the planning,variety and volume of food required to do it as we get older may be unsustainable for most people with normal work/ train/ family lives. Does that not mean supplements are more about convenience than necessity?
@AndreObradovicAus
@AndreObradovicAus 4 года назад
@@desigilmore5044 Great comments Desi, As I stated Eliud and David are elite athletes and they probably have a totally different lifestyle compared to the general population so I dont think that comparison is valid. However I reinforce the point that the typical daily allowance RDA is far to low for an athlete and is based on perfect health and perfect diet. I encourage you to look at this also www.patrickholford.com/advice/supplements-optimum-daily-allowances Maybe Taren could alter his diet slightly but as I stated I eat a close to perfect Low Carb Diet growing my own crops own eggs and only grass feed meats sleep 9hrs a night and still my Vitamin D is at the lower range so I need to supplement it just one example also Magnesium with Phosorus is another key element along with zinc that most athletes will be low in not to mention iodine due to the issues associated with pool swimming and you can only eat so much seaweed and or dulse flakes to increase Iodine levels before Thyroid issues start. I am lucky that i only source practioner based supplements all with co-factors and my wife uses muscle testing to confirm that the supplements will be absorbed by my body along with a barrage of blood tests each 6 months so I can see the results, But yes food is medicine is the starting point. have a good day

Who the f*ck would dislike this video?? It's not easy to broadcast this kind of difficulty when the culture in triathlon (as well as mainstream culture, 100% grind all the time) exists. Way to be vulnerable Taren, thank you for presenting the not so pretty part of this life style. Continue to look at this as an opportunity and continue your gratitude. Your body will thank you later!

Thanks for sharing. The truth is, you weren't healthy before... you were just more fit. Being healthy and being fit are not the same. Being able to push your body past its limits does not mean your body is healthy, it just means you are mentally tough enough to push through the pain. My biggest problem is exactly what you've described... always thinking I have to go harder with every workout and seeing off-days as a step backward. It's an unhealthy way to train. Videos like this help because I see I'm not alone. Keep up the great work. You've earned a new sub!

Taren, I really appreciate your honesty in this video, but I feel you are heading down the wrong path with all these chemicals. Your body has a fabulous internal system to self heal, the concoction of pills you are throwing down will almost certainly have an adverse effect. Use this down time to detox and meditate, fasting is a great tool for repairing the body at a cellular level, then look to rebuild. Be safe brother! 💪

Would also consider some fasting + gut reset & detox, supported by some supps. I do this 1x per season, tho not in summer 😎

Detox as in letting the body do its thing I agree with, but please don't think that adding supplements or fasting or whatever does anything. We have a liver for detox. The supplements are just a waste of money. Eat a lot fruits and vegetables and take a long break from intensive training. Maybe just hike every weekend for a few months.

Not sure about the "fasting" part, but I agree with everything else you've said. Snake oil salesmen have an easy time taking Taren's money. Very. Jesus - protein, carbs, microelements, some fat, it doesn't take a whole lot to *not screw up* your body, just give it what it needs. Not pills, unless you're sick!

Thank you Taren! This is the most useful training video I've ever seen. Very few folks talk about how to step back, evaluate a rough patch honestly, and how to proceed from there. I just hit the subscribe button because fitness is a journey that doesn't always go in a straight, uninterrupted line, and I want to follow along. Take care :-)

At least I'm not the only one suffering major weight gain and a feeling of empty-ness due to how things have been going. Definitely feeling it on the major stresses due to working from home and not having enough of an escape when the "office" is 5 steps away. Currently 28 lbs heavier than I've been since 2014 and definitely relate to the constant hunger. Hope you feel better Taren, once heads are screwed on better and the body is feeling like it's in a better place, training and PB's will come back - just need to give it time!

Totally agree, for me an infection of the stomach with absolutely no metabolization and assimilation of nutrients signifies a breakdown, see a partial destruction of the intestinal microbiota. It must therefore be repaired and this requires a very precise assessment with a doctor followed by recolonization using a tailor-made probiotic, with a normal and healthy diet. Otherwise even the capsules (which in my opinion are totally unnecessary in this case) will have no effect anyway. IMHO. Take care taren

Many of my patients including myself have experienced similar over training issues and especially with the invent of Strava and the perceived idea that comes with the platform of smashing out workouts day after day. The pressure to perform and continue to break PBs is real and can make us overlook our body’s needs. You are not alone, however not everyone will talk about it and many will appreciate this message! Thanks for posting such an honest video, man! Not easy to come out and do that. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Just remember that Triathlon Taren is just a part of you - not all of you. So, if TT has to take a back seat for a moment while Taren takes a well earned rest then do it. There’s no pressure on you to produce content/get back to full on training when it’s no benefit in the long term! The important thing is that you are happy and healthy. Get back to that place then see how you feel about tour future accomplishments! I am in a similar situation where I decided that I was going to change my lifestyle from being someone who trained for (running) races then took weeks...even months off/lost their fitness then started from scratch to somebody who would always be fit and active. Yes, I got some great results in 2019 but have spent all of 2020 injured, out of shape and unhappy. I’m slowly getting back into light running but I’ve realised (like you say) that easy days are easy days. 80/20! Instead of hammering it 6 days a week with double sessions etc. Good luck mate, take the necessary time to recover and reset and then start chasing your dreams again! 👍🏻

Taren. Really appreciate your honesty and openness and why I admire you as human. I’m so glad you posted bc I’ve seen by so many top age groupers having careers cut short due to injury, burnout. Overtraining is such big issue. I’m guilty of following and posting big miles, watts and admiring Lionel Sanders type of workouts to the detriment of ones overall health. I use to be what Coach Dixon called , “fit but fatigued”. Z2 and Maffetone has literally saved my career. My only recommendation is you seem to reliant on supplements, perhaps that might also have negative impact. Supplements like training needs need balancing so good for your to detox and start with new balance.

@@jwc1997 our bodies are meant to take the nutrients in their natural form. All this overprocessed shit is simply harmful. The only two things we should supplement are vit D and B12. Everything else is crap. A whole-food plant-based diet that's varied enough will give your body all the energy and good nutrients it will ever need. Check out nutritionfacts.org for more detailed info.

Having a running channel I have felt this need to always be pushing...until this past year, I decide to be be transparent and talk about these type of issues, over training, stress and just taking care of yourself...and most important, rest. I just came off a 3 week break, I ran once and I feel great. Having channels like we do doesn't help with these issues because of the pressure to always to "rah, rah". Glad you are getting healthy again. All the best!

A brave video , not many people would be prepared to publish a bare all video like this. A timely reminder to everyone about examining their motivation and listening to their body. Being what you could call a very veteran "Athlete" myself, listening to your body is extremely important. Having read Joe Friel's books they opened my eyes to overtraining just in time." It's not always about being the best, but being the best you can" as he says. A good outlook on life and training. Why do we do it? is a really important question you have to ask yourself on a regular basis. Enjoyment should always come out on top as far as I am concerned. This might be age speaking, but its a philosophy I have certainly started to adhere to, I still want to improve and get fitter, faster and for longer, BUT everything has a cost, make sure you don't loose sight of that again. Good luck Taren and take care. One final point, do you really need all those supplements?

Great video, so glad it popped up on my feed. I think many can relate, especially myself right now. I haven’t had a days holiday since Christmas. It’s been a high stress with a wedding cancelled and re arranged, and a house to renovate. Lockdown has seen my bike fitness improve massively, but in the past couple of weeks load has maintained high with a decrease in fitness. The wedding also raises stressed levels. I got married last week and now sat on a sun lounger on my honeymoon, will use this week to rest, relax and unwind. Just what the doctor ordered.
