WHY I'M SELLING my Alpkit Soloist | I Bought A TarpTent Scarp 1

Why I'm selling my Alpkit Soloist and replacing it with a TarpTent Scarp 1 for backpacking. Twice the space for about the same weight, better layout, and weatherproofing features. Currently looking at some other options for ultralight & fastpacking tents, drop your suggestions in the comments & give this video a thumbs up if you want to see more videos like this!
Disclaimer: We do like Alpkit! Alpkit makes great products that we've used and loved over the years but when you're ready to upgrade and spend a bit more there are some really cool companies out there making great gear. Trying new gear, and replacing things you've 'outgrown' is part of the process. Hoping whoever we've sold the soloist on to can make great memories with it.

I have one Alpkit Soloist. It is perfect for bike packing. My Prolite plus mattress fits perfectly, as do my 2 "Radical design" bags. And myself with my 90 kg I am comfortable. It is clearly not a tent to spend 10 days in one place with a 20 kg bag. I load my bike with 6.5kg of material including repair tools and water. I wanted a free-standing tent, strong and less than 1.5kg. The Alpkit completely meets my specifications for dynamic cycling. And for its price, there is nothing better.

Glad it works for you! It’s a good tent especially for the price, unbeatable.

Ha ha, a lesson to us all to read through the tent details before buying! I’m a 5’3” small female and I love this Alpkit Soloist tent❤️ but I can see it is way too small for you! Glad you found another great tent more suitable for you 🙂

Our pleasure! I'll tell you what made me a little happy? They've released the Soloist XL? Maybe it's time to check it out again?

The Tarptent is way larger and won't pitch into places the Alpkit will, that would be a big downer for me sometimes. It's just different tools for different purposes. Not sure why you consider it an upgrade? It's like saying a hammer is an upgrade from a screwdriver, they do different things. I use several different tents, bivys or hammocks depending on what I'm doing.

I have a soloist and sleep with my feet by the door. This makes it a lot easier to enter, sit up facing forward, and also gives me room for my 65 L pack down by my legs where the tent is wider. Still a small tent obviously, and I have a bigger tent for winter/bad weather.

That’s a good way to do it! I don’t think I could go back to the tunnel after using the side entry tent though 😅

Don’t forget you can increase the rear ventilation by pulling up the flysheet centre drawcords at head and foot end allowing a breeze in.

Loved my Soloist, great for the price. Appreciate the Scarp is an awesome tent but at around £700 price difference, it's going to be. Not really a fair comparison, but good review.

Thanks for the comment, completely agree! After having some personal difficulties with the soloist I decided to upgrade. For the price, alpkit is impressive. Investing in something a bit more expensive definitely has its perks though ☺️

Not sure where you’re getting £700 price difference?? I got my scarp last October and with duty and postage etc from the US it was £440 all in. Soloist is £130 with postage, so £300 price difference?

Greetings from the Great Lakes State of Michigan, USA 🇺🇸 The Scrap 1 will be perfect for my 4000 plus mile camping road trips on my Indian motorcycle. They’re on back order here in the states, expected to be available in April, 2022. Thanks for the review 👍

I've bought one of these for backpacking but wished I'd watched all the videos about it first. Now realised its completely unusable for backpacking but maybe it'll be OK for bikepacking..

Hello from California. Nice review. I am going to say that this is a comparison of bananas to oranges. The huge difference in the price point is obvious, but there are several tents that share the same design as the Alpkit Soloist, as well as the Tarptent Scarp. I am glad that you found a tent that is going to serve you well in a wide variety of terrain and weather conditions. Funny though, I was looking at the Soloist and now going to check out the Scarp (it kind of reminds me of Hillebergs). I am looking forward to your upcoming vids on the Scarp. Paul Messner (RU-vidr) has a vid using this tent. Have wonderful adventures with the Scarp. Cheers!

Hello! Thanks for checking us out. They are both beautiful tents, don't get me wrong! There will always be a soft spot in my heart for the Soloist. The Scarp simply ticket a lot more boxes for similar weight. Fore reasons to be explained soon, I needed to sell the Scarp :( !

I'm not sure that this is a fair comparison - what is the weight and packsize difference of each tent? I've got my old Coleman Viper that is wonderfully spacious and could be a base camp tent for a long stay somewhere but it weighs over 2 kilos. The Alpkit Soloist is clearly designed to be ultralight and compact. It's like the 3 circle Venn Diagram, (light, big, cheap) you won't find a tent a to sit in the middle section.
@heapswellnice
@heapswellnice 11 месяцев назад
It’s been a few years since I had these tents. Form memory they both weighed 1.7kg on my scales. Considering Weight, Size and price. These two are very similar across weight and pack size. The only major difference is the stuffability of the Scarp due to the end struts. On the price concept, “cheap” may keen different things for different people, although I’m not considering the Scarp to be “cheap” it’s quite affordable for the weight, size and quality as there are other lighter weight options available, DCF as an example.
@sing_cycle_referee
@sing_cycle_referee 11 месяцев назад
@@heapswellnice the comparison in price is Soloist is $150 and the Scarp is $350. For some people that might be cheap but for the average joe that's got to me pricey.

is this the Soloist XL? do feel it is a bit slag off Alpkit video. I mean its a great tent for the price! I mean you can't find a one man tent that is that light for that price.

Just the normal size, there are a lot of goods about the tent. The feedback was based on my personal experience with it, not my favourite due to the issues highlighted
@dingobeaver6919

That design of tent is great, based on the tn laser comp one, which I have gone back to using for bike packing as its dark green useful for stealth camping, also a small footprint, hot it on alll sorts of small spaces. Ps I have the moment dw but it's not stealth green colour 😕😂

Good review but I do think it's a bit unfair on alpkit, as the saying goes you get wat you pay for so for the price I think the alpkit is cracking value for money,, the scarp tent is just in another league and so it should be for the cost off it
@heapswellnice
@heapswellnice Год назад
100% cracking value from Alpkit. I love their Bikepacking bags. The Soloist was my first tent but the Scarp just ticket more boxes for a similar weight.

How was the buying process, import duty, wait time etc. Great video 👍
@heapswellnice
@heapswellnice 3 года назад
Several factors with it 1. Where you’re importing to (I’ll assume UK for my reply) duties/import not included with purchase so plan for that bill when it arrives (plan for 20%) 2. They offer seam sealing service that adds more time & cost - the time probably depends on their demand when you purchase. 3. Delays due to the pandemic - mostly shipping related delay. 4. One weird thing is they charge you but then it looks like it was refunded, this is because they hold the money but then don’t ‘charge’ until it’s shipped. - we thought the order was refunded or failed at first but it was fine. Scarp 1 took 2 weeks to arrive seam sealed last summer. We are currently waiting on another tarp tent order that we placed about a month ago. So time could vary quite a bit.
