Why I Miss Woodworking Shows and See Inside a Woodworking Show (Toronto, Canada)

Since the pandemic, I haven't been to a woodworking show... they just haven't come back. There are a lot of things to do and see at a woodworking show. This will give you an idea of what you can experience at a woodworking show. From sales and demonstrations to used and new tools, there's something for everyone. My favourite part is talking to the tool companies directly to ask my questions and get advice you can't get anywhere else.
We put this video together to show you what you can expect at a local woodworking show. This video was filmed at the Toronto Woodworking Show. You will recognize tools from Bessy, Lee Valley Tools, DeWalt, Makita, Fuji Spray, Trend, SawStop, and more.
The Wood Turner's Guild had a number of woodturning demonstrations running simultaneously showing bowl turning and spindle turning. Some accomplished woodworkers such as Rob Cosman were on hand to demonstrate hand tools as well as Lee Valley Tools staff.
One cool section I liked was the used tools. You can pick up and arm full of hand tools for very little money. They're a great way to start your hand tool collection on a budget with a little TLC.

Is it worth going to one of these shows if you are just a beginner who isn't made of money? Obviously being able to watch, learn, and talk with experts is a great reason to go, but what makes me more excited is the prospect of seeing and buying cool tools and jigs and materials I've never seen before. Even those used tools look like they'd still cost a pretty penny - is this show not for me?

I hope Scott doesn't mind my comment. Quick answer...YES, you should attend at least one of the shows. Regarding money, set a limit as to how much you will spend...whatever your resources allow. While the tools are a big draw, they also have free one hour seminars that are informative, especially to a new woodworker. Some seminars are at a cost but you can skip those. I used to love attending these shows. Tools all around you, experienced woodworkers teaching you, etc. It's worth it, give it a shot!

Do the sales get better on the last day? or the same sales throughout?

Good question. I haven't experienced a wood show over multiple days, so I don't know the answer to that. If I had to guess, you might find a deal on the last day so they don't have to cart their product away.

went to a show this year and see that the shows have really gone down hill. Very few of the major vendors that are in this video are there anymore. I guess they cant compete with the competitive pricing of Amazon and others

I hope it comes back to what it once was. Fingers crossed.
