Why I moved to the US and back to Denmark 4 years later

At one point in my life, I lived in the United States. Then I moved back to Denmark. Why? It's a question I've asked myself - and been asked - many times. In this video, I'll try to answer it, partly at least, with some images from Denmark. I wonder if some of you have similar experiences?
Always grateful for having you here. Much love!

My youngest son, 17, could not go back to Denmark for 1 1/2 years because of Corona. When he finally could come back, we were driving thru North Jutland when he just sighed. And said: "You have no idea, how much I have missed this landscape. This is such a big part of me". He was genuinely happy.

Home is important. People would do well to remember this in the modern age, where so few are caring enough to do what they can to protect it from outside forces. It wont be here all of a sudden.

Im from Latvia. Moved to Toronto, Canada when I was 19 with my parents. Later got married and 2 kids. When I turned 33 (14 years later) I had an urge to go back. Took us 1 year, but we made to home land. Living home now. for 5 years. And we are very, very happy for such decisions !! Be brave and follow your inner peace ❤

I was born in Herning and at age 7 my parents decided to emigrate to Australia. We were only going to stay 2 years but here I am at 71 still “down under”. In the last 10 years my hubby and I have been able to visit Denmark several times and as strange as it might sound, the minute I get off the plane I straight away think, oh, I’m home. I’ll be there again in August and I can’t wait! Thank you for sharing, I really enjoyed this video .

As a now soon to be 76 year old Danish Craftsman/Pensioner I have also visited many places around the world, China - Africa and most of Europe from north to the south + the GB, but never the US! I have seen so many comments also from Americans, now living in Denmark, and trying to become Danish Citizens, about the differences in living in the EU and how - practical Europe has been arranged compared with the US. I like to be able to use my bike to go to anywhere close by, for most purposes and not having to start my car, unless in serious need of transport! Finn. Denmark

I grew up in Canada and had a Danish foster family whom I loved so much. I spoke fluent Danish as a child but I do not recall a word now in my older age. I lost touch with them and only wish that they knew how much I loved them and how much my foster family meant to me. I live in the US now and tried to find them for years, but I always wanted to go to Denmark because someone I felt like it would feel like home to me. I love your landscape and old garden so much. My grandparents came from Denmark, and I lived in a small farming community in Oregon with many Danish immigrants. I first traveled to Denmark as a young travel agent . On that trip a friend asked me how I felt about being there and I had to say it felt like I had come home. A comfortable feeling came over me I can't explain. I think I would have been very happy to stay.

I was born in the US to an American father and an English mother. From an early age I never felt as if I belonged there, and it was very difficult to make sense of those feelings until I was older. I did eventually move to the UK when I was in my early 20’s, and finally felt as if I had found my home.

Tak for dine tanker. Jeg har boet i Canada i over 20 år nu. Alene.

You've totally expressed how I feel! I'm Dutch, but have been living in Australia for the past 7 years - and now I have split up with my ex I am actually preparing to move back to Europe in the next few years, Denmark in particular. When people ask me why (because "Australia is such a great country") it is exactly how you describe it. It is more of a feeling than something that you can put into words. And the seasons, oh I miss the seasons, and the familiarity of the trees, the birds, the smells. I have integrated well in Australia and I do like it here, but I can just feel in my bones that this is not "my place" and that I don't want to grow old here.
@danishmusings
@danishmusings 2 года назад
Exactly! That feeling in ‘your bones’ that something that just goes deeper than your own understanding somehow. I have always loved Holland and have been to Amsterdam many times but also Delft and the countryside. I once came back from a trip to Amsterdam and was all ecstatic about it to a colleague, who then said, “Yeah, Holland is like Denmark, only cooler.” 😎 I wish you well on your return to Europe; you’ve no doubt got some amazing experiences to take home with you!

@@danishmusings Holland is nice, I agree! But it just feels a bit too crowded after living in Australia for so long. And I really like Denmark (also because it is similar to NL), but less people and more space, so hence my choice! Can't wait to use a bike as a mode of transportation again 😁.

Thanks for sharing this! I know how it feels. As a Dutchie, I was also living abroad (in Iceland and Sweden) for about 8 years and I had a partner in Iceland, where I lived for about a year during the pandemic. Even though it was a fantastic experience after all, Iceland didn't feel like it was the right place for me to grow old. I started to miss home, my family, friends, being able to bike everywhere, etc. I decided to move away and we broke up, just because we couldn't make it work. It was sad, but it was for the better. We're still friends. I'm happy I made the decision to move away, back to my roots. People often ask me why I didn't want to stay in Iceland, they all say it's so beautiful. But sometimes it's hard to describe why something doesn't feel right. Your heart will make the right decision and guide you to the place where you want to be. I know how you feel about The Netherlands, that it's too densily populated. Denmark is very similar indeed, just less crowded and more spacious and green. However, you will still find very quiet and green places in The Netherlands too, especially in the North where I'm from.

So lovely and personal video, with lovely Danish landscapes, totally loving it. thanks for this virtual tour, as far as being in Ukraine we don't have right to leave the country, so that we were definitely the most unlucky people in the world, who just started leaving that pandemic isolation behind, as we got into another trouble, which (who could believe it back then!) is much worse than those two horrible and crazy years. As soon as I was writing the comment, air raid alarm again sounded behind my window in the dark. I'm youtube recommended me you. Your videos are kinda so relaxing and have some special vibe. I love how you deliver the narration, like a mom telling a story to her child. hope I'll manage to visit Denmark one day, say to register a marriage, which is prohibited in our country ,alas. And I'd be happy to witness those marvelous huggelig pictures with my own eyes

I am longing to live in Europe or England. I’m terrified of our mass shootings here in the US and I don’t go to malls or big stores anymore. We are messed up as a country with wrong priorities. I’m sorry it made you sad 😔 Your comment made me ponder what it means to feel at home. To some extent, I think you’re right that it’s in our mind. Thank you for this reflection. It has meant a lot to me - as I have a similar story. In the mid 1970s - when I was 11 yrs old my father moved our family from rural Michigan here in the US to Miami, Florida. I had never seen the ocean, never been so far south. We moved in November. As most know - Miami is perpetual sun and warmth. I had only known snow all winter, distinct seasons, rural life where the entire village and surrounding farms were our playgrounds. Now we lived in a dense neighborhood and it was perpetual summer. While many love Miami, love Florida - I do not have fond memories. It was difficult for many reasons. Now I live in Virginia - which is more like my childhood. Like you had mentioned - we instinctively know where we belong.

One great advantage of living in Scandinavia is - as she stated- nature is always very near. Cycle just 5 minutes then you are in the middle of nature. Beautiful, very easily accessible, scenic nature. You can cycle miles and miles in the nature without actually meeting much people. In Sweden, Norway and Finland, huge, deep, jungle like thick forests are just a few kilometers from your home. But be careful with giant moose, they are everywhere.. Lovely countries if you love nature…

The depth of attachment to locations is for me deep; and I realize I keep hesitating between many of them, and go back to them with a mixed feeling of nostalgia and will to discover yet more. Some of my personal locations are northern california, massachussets, switzerland, the mountains of italy, southern germany... curacao.... i feel that a bit of my soul is resident still in each of these places.

I feel fortunate as do you to be able to live where I, too, can experience the 4 seasons. Also as with you, I lived in one area until I was in my teens and then moved, which for me was from one state in the US ( Maine) to another (New York). I longed to be back to the rocky coast, pine trees, lobster boats and ferries to the Casco Bay islands. I even longed to be able to swim in the cold Maine water but even more, to return to the welcoming, slower life style that this state had given me. So, here are my husband and I post-retirement immersing ourselves in this New England life, a very different natural as well as cultural life from our NY years. I appreciated and loved those as well but I needed to return home. It's a comfort to know a visit to New York is an easy drive, so we are able to visit several times a year. Thank you for your thought-provoking reflections.

I'm in the process of retirement. I've spent most of my time with outdoor activities. My parents taught me a lot coming from a large blue collar family. Knitting, sewing, canning, gardening and how to survive with farm animals. I love it. This is not your typical San Diego setting. Like you, it's not for me.

Your words really touched me and you describe so well what I’ve been feeling inside for the past months. I lived in Denmark for 2 years while studying at university, I was preparing to stay permanently after meeting my now ex-partner however things went differently than expected and I decided to move back to the Netherlands. But ever since I made the decision, I’ve been doubting my decision and been stuck contemplating the ‘what ifs’. But I did feel in my bones as well that Denmark was not the country for me I would want to grow old in, it’s such a weird indiscribable feeling. I often get the question from friends “Why on earth I would move back to the Netherlands?” “Denmark is so beautiful, what are you doing back here?”. These questions sometimes frustrate me because I feel like people don’t understand the complexity of the answer I give and are often still confused when I give my answer. “If you love Denmark, then why are you here?” Or “Well you can always go back” and then are surprised when I say I probably won’t. I guess I’m starting to find peace with the fact that these things are complicated, and like you say: one is never fully content with one’s country. But the connection I feel to my home country grew stronger while I was away from it, and it’s what keeps me happy here. The bike culture, friends and family, holidays and traditions, supermarkets! It’s all a part of me. So here’s to following our gut feeling, having faith that everything will work out in the end and that everything is as it’s supposed to be. Thank you for your insights and lovely videos that allow me to experience Denmark from home 🤍

I couldn't bear so much there mostly the horrid never ending heat and humidity, so returned to the U.S. I believe it is important to be where you must be. I am young 21 year old Croatian living in Copenhagen for almos 3 years. Even though I am not a Dane, I relate to the video. I keep missing my mountains and my Adriatic sea. I miss every centimeter of my Croatian hot summer nature. And Denmark is a bit different than Croatia, especially this capital city Copenhagen from my small costal port town I grew up in. It is definetely a blessing that I am here now and I learned and evolved a lot in these few years, but I am starting to question myself, is this me? Or is it not? Guess I will find out soon. You speak like native english speaker by the way, might not important compliment, but I was shocked at the perfect sound of your voice, just like in a perfect autumn movie. ;)

Beautiful video about your journey! 1:27 I totally understand what you mean here. Sometimes it's hard to figure out why you feel things and that's ok, but your heart is guiding you to the right decision. I had the same feeling when I was living in Iceland with my ex partner there last year. It's an absolutely beautiful country and the people are super friendly, but it wasn't feeling right somehow. I made the decision to move back to my home country, The Netherlands. Before Iceland, I was also living in Sweden for 7 years, so I lived abroad for about 8 years at that time. Iceland was the opposite of where I'm from: a lot of rough mountains, not densily populated, very car-focused, and especially isolated from the rest of Europe. Not that I liked all of this, but I started to miss "home". I started to miss being close to family, friends, and having quick connections, being able to take my bike to other places nearby and such. Strangely enough, I never felt homesick in Sweden, and I still think about moving there for some time in the future, just whenever the time is right. Or perhaps having a small second house would be another option. A typical Swedish house, just like you mentioned. Either way, Denmark is absolutely beautiful as well.

Hi, Musings! I really enjoyed your video because it sounds more like a pensive prose, rather than a simple description. Even though you moved back to Denmark, you still sound undecided because you wonder whether moving to a colder weather state would have made you stay in the US! However, I feel that you've already found your spiritual niche in Denmark! One should settle where the heart is! Hopefully your children will come to visit in your golden years. But if they don't, Denmark is an excellent country to retire! They have communal living where people of different ages share a building and, through mutual dependency, become your immediate family! Other than that, enjoy your new, old home in Denmark!
@danishmusings
@danishmusings Год назад
Thanks for your comment, which made me think. Yes, I guess I have found my spiritual home here, but I will always treasure having spent part of my upbringing in the US. Hi, well, moving here temporarily is simple but staying on has become more difficult, and I recently met an American-Danish couple who moved on to Sweden after staying in Denmark for a while. I would say, briefly, that the most important thing is to have an education or skillset you can use here and a willingness to learn the language. In the cities it’s expensive to live here, less so in smaller towns. Come on a vacation here first to check it out 😎

I don't think moving to Denmark for you is a suitable idea if you have been brought up all your life in the US. Moving somewhere should not be an escape from the US in the 21st century, it should be somewhere you have an affinity for, or family and cultural ties. Denmark is a great country, but with very different cultural values to the US, someone coming from there might struggle badly with the differences. It's not some nirvana for people escaping unhappy situations from elsewhere (if the Danish immigration even allow it, not sure, unless you are a refugee). If you're life in the US was unhappy or even a trainwreck, don't expect Denmark, or anywhere else that is a very wealthy first world country to fix it for you. 'Grass is greener' is a thing.

Interesting video, some great insights there...the two places are so completely different, it must have been a total culture shock to move to the US, but I think you generally have to go one way or the other, or you are continuously disappointed or conflicted about the differences. You are Danish by birth and culture, but America must have affected you to some extent as you talk about all your experiences on a RU-vid channel. That is not very Danish behavior, a place where people tend to keep things to themselves.
