Why I No Longer Want a C8 Z06: 2023 Chevy Corvette C8 Z51 

Dude couldn’t agree more! They’re not cheap by any stretch. And most zo6’s won’t even see a track. I think the z51 HTC is the perfect spec of corvette. You get enough of the performance stuff while still having the option of being able to daily drive it.

Just got my c8 70th in white also. I agree completely, I came from a 97 gts viper and I love this c8 way more. z06 sure but twice what i paid for my c8? no thanks.

@@youcdtube hey so truth be told, I haven’t done much research on it yet. I think the prospect of it is pretty killer even though most old school corvette people aren’t really liking it. I haven’t really seen one in person much less drove one yet. But once I dig in a little bit more, I’ll definitely get back to you and post a video on it. Prematurely I think an AWD hybrid vette that’s keeps it’s v8 is an interesting idea. Also I do know the motors work completely independently from one another. And it adds 500lbs over a standard stingray model. All of that said, I think it’s very probable that the ERay will have that sweet spot of daily drivability and performance. I think from a maintenance standpoint though, you don’t really have much to worry about. It is still an American car. I would always recommend getting a extended warranty from the manufacturer for any performance oriented vehicle anyway. It’s seriously saved me probably over 10k over two vehicles. Id be more concerned with reliability given that it’s a brand new model and it’s never really been done before by Chevy. Obviously first gen anything can be plagued with problems. I do like however that it is basically built in a zo6 body which is wider than the stingray. And I’m pretty sure the upcoming zr1 will be the zo6 powertrain with the ERay hybrid system. So if that happens that will tell me that the ERay platform is here to stay until the eventual demise of combustion power. But I hope to get some time with one soon and I’ll definitely dig in a bit more and tell you what I find. Hope this helps in some way for now!

I agree. I’ve always been a big AWD fan because it adds everyday functionality. But what I think is crazy is that it’s faster than the z06. I do not like pure EVs. I’m pretty open about that lol but electric assisted performance vehicles are extremely interesting. Especially when that vehicle retains its V8.

@@enthusiastdriven . I think America infrastructure is not quite ready for the ev revolution of cars. I think manufacturers should keep doing hybrids because its solves the range anxiety while offering outstanding performance. Im glad I waited because now there is zero reason to choose a base corvette over the E-Ray especially paying well above MSRP for a base car makes zero sense. I believe the demand shift from the base car to the Z06 and E-Ray will be staggering

It really all depends where you go. I actually went with a dealer in GA because of that. This build took about a year. But I think the general idea is that they are attainable. Certainly way more so than the ZO6.

Personally I love them. They look great. They’re nice and tight but still comfortable enough for long drives. It’s pretty adjustable too. But honestly, I think the suspension has a lot to do with it as well. And the fact that they’re ventilated and heated is pretty nice too.

When you can get something attainable with similar performance and almost identical looks… i think I speak for everyone when I say that I cannot wait for the era of flipping will be over

At MSRP it would be pushing it for this car at its current design and build quality level! To add another $50-$100K above that is insane and stupid if you actually fall for it!!!

Yea it’s a very subtle change. I did notice that in person, it’s very noticeable only if standing to a regular c8.

The wider body of the z06 also causes rocks to be thrown into the intake from the front wheels. Is that also an issue with the standard C8?

John, I couldn’t agree more. Dealers are always happy to take your money. And they’ll hope you either forget or keep waiting. I think it’s absolutely absurd. That coupled with insane markups pretty much across the board. And the crazy thing is that the manufacturers are allowing this to happen. Instead of stepping in and siding with the customer that has been upholding their business since inception, they turn a blind eye and the world keeps spinning. I think it’s appalling. Unfortunately, Covid and the dreaded shortages haven’t really helped anything but rather exacerbated the issue placing the power back into the hands of the dealers. But honestly, it’s our fault as the consumers because we allow them to do this and still continue to be customers. We continue to buy and buy despite knowing full well that we’re being taken advantage of. You used to shop around and find the best deal based on what dealer could save you the most bucks and get you the best deal… now we essentially search for a dealer that is willing to sell us a car at MSRP! Those were the good old days of buying cars. But I’m afraid those days are not only long gone but will never come back again.

Yea I think looks are totally subjective. But I have to agree that I don’t like the underbite on the zo6. However, for me that’s where it ends. I like everything else more on the zo6 over the stingray. It’s just the angular front end that doesn’t work for me

Heck yea! I would’ve stayed on the list also but I just got turned off by the whole process and markups. I plan to just enjoy the stingray for the time being also. I think in a few years I might look for a Z second hand. Or I might just go the Porsche route as I’ve literally dreamed of my entire life. Hopefully one day!! 🙏🏼

While i do agree with you that I failed to mention a few key performance differences between the Z51 and the ZO6, I think the purpose was more to focus on the z51 and why I think it’s “enough” of a mid engine sports car. But I think it’s a stretch to say one is Harley vs a sport bike. Had you said a c6 or c5 compared to the c8 zo6, I’d be inclined to agree. But performance numbers are not that far apart to say one is a dog and one is a supercar killer (even though it is). Don’t forget the z51 c8 is more than capable of taking down most cars you’d pull up to a light next to. It’s by no means a slouch. The zo6 is a step above that’s track oriented with a flat plane. They’re not two different vehicles. They’re different in a lot of ways. But it’s still a mid engine c8.

Well firstly, good luck on getting your Z. I hope your time comes soon buddy. Unfortunately, with the death of the manual, we will have more and more cars without that engaging feeling you’re talking about. I’m not sure if you’ve driven a c8 in a similar spec or not, but it is incredibly fun and engaging. Now I’ve driven this one all the way from Kentucky. So I’ve spent a good chunk of time behind the wheel. And although shifting paddles will never ever equate to using a clutch and shifting gears, this is pretty darn good.

Oh man I’d love to work with your dealer! Honestly, I would hold onto both if the opportunity. The era of the v8 is ending and soon, once all gone, they’ll be worth a lot more. They’ll all essentially become collectors items. Now, the zo6 is an incredible feat. But as I said in my video, the stingray is good enough and lives up to the corvette name. The sound the zo6 makes is probably one of the best sounds I’ve heard from a car in a long time. A lot of people are calling me crazy for this, but the point I’m making is that the z51 is enough. Plus for the kind of performance bump you’re getting on the zo6, unless you’re tracking the car, it really won’t matter. You’ll run out of road or skill before it really matters. So I agree. I was also in line for a zo6 but I ended up dropping out. Honestly, not really all that concerned with getting one. But I think eventually I might.

I get your point. And it makes a lot of sense. I’m not above appreciating the subtle differences between the c8 and the z06. I think people who know what they’re looking for will instantly be able to tell the difference. However, I think back to the zl1 1LE. And that car (even though some people thought it was designed in a Need For Speed game) looked pretty different from a standard Camaro or regular zl1. So I suppose my disappointment comes from not having that dedicated track focused look. And I know you can option a lot of that stuff on the z06. But I just wish it had a little more of an aggressive design.

@@enthusiastdriven anytime! I think the big factor is that C8 can be easily supercharged and since Z06 is pretty much unattainable at this point, it will turn lot of people into buying a Stingray.

@@enthusiastdriven I was honestly surprised at the MSRP of the E-Ray, it’s almost same as the Z06. Stingray seems like the perfect choice cause at MSRP, it’s definitely a steal.

@@LIG242 100% fully optioned out a stingray costs what the ERay starts at and the zo6 starts like 20-40k more than that! I think the jump is due to the battery and components. Since the two motors function completely independent from one another, there’s a lot more R&D and development that went into it. But at least you get AWD in a corvette which is pretty cool. And I believe it’s just a hair faster than a zo6. And I think they had to throttle that just because they don’t want to shoot themselves in the foot. I did hear that a rumor that the ZR1 might be the zo6 power train with the ERays electric assist.

So you just have to select the option when you’re submitting your order. Your dealer should’ve been able to set that up for you. I think it’s an extra $1000 or $1500. Something in that range if memory serves me. If you ordered from a Chevy dealer, they should have been able to set that up for you.

@@SamC992 they absolutely profit off of that. Which is crazy to me considering all of the money dealers made since the pandemic started. The markups due to demand were and still are absurd. So the fact that they’re playing this game with you makes me pretty upset. If I was you I’d give them a call and discuss it with them. If they refuse or play dumb, I’d probably go through another dealer. I’m happy to refer you to mine but keep in mind that they’re in GA.

Yea you have a point and you get a warranty with Hennessy as well. But two things: 1. A Hennessy kit c8 will never hold its value. Especially when compared to a zo6. So it’s hard to justify the spend. 2. I recall Hennessy leaving a bad taste in peoples mouths a while back. Now, they do some crazy stuff so I totally get the appeal.

Hey buddy! I appreciate your take. I do agree that some blue accents on the exterior would really set it off nice. But personally I don’t like when they do the wheels like that. I prefer single color, usually black. I also really like the squared exhaust. I just think it flows with the body better and looks aggressive!

Haven’t had a single issue yet. But to be honest, she doesn’t get a ton of road time between my other vehicles. But so far- including the road-trip home from KY- so good.

So it’s not a just a package. Or at least I wouldn’t classify it as such. The reason for that is because the body is wider, the engine is different and new (being naturally aspirated). It has subtle differences although incredibly similar to a stingray. Yes the DNA is almost identical but I think the zo6 platform is different enough. It’s like saying that the zl1 is a package offered in the Camaro. And that’s not the case. Again, same platform, but once you overhaul the internals to such an extent, I believe it transcends the packages. Like you can’t check off the zo6 option on your c8 build. Comparatively speaking, the z51 performance package that I spoke about in the video is one of those things you can check off when ordering the car.

I totally hear you. I didn’t really feel the same way my first time driving it. To me, it feels balanced and powerful. Im wondering if the z51 package would change your opinion on it. Because I drove one with and without it. And the one without does feel a little… neutered ? If that’s the right word…

You’re 100% correct. You’re not saying anything anyone didn’t know before. The zo6 dominates most cars. It’s insanely fast. But I’m saying that the c8 is good enough. It’s finally become what it was always meant to be: a mid engine American supercar.

Hey Steve. So I had to clean the driveway of salt to film. And I was just moving it around slowly to film it so I didn’t even really drive it that day. But I couldn’t agree more. As crazy as the zo6 is, I just don’t think it’s truly worth it given the markup. At msrp, I’m going for it all day. As far as the ventilation on the seats go.. to be honest, all of my vehicles have it… and they all suck pretty bad. I find that my wife’s Range Rover is the worst, followed by my trx. I can at least feel the ones on the corvette. My c8 is probably one of the better ones given that it’s so new. But yea… they all suck lol

I agree. I think they could’ve done way better with the zo6 design. The problem, however, with modifications is that they’ll void your warranty if you care about that sorta thing. But yea I mean you could mod if with some bolt ones and a tune. Perhaps you won’t get quite up to zo6 numbers. But you’ll make an already fast car even faster.

@Enthusiast Driven the bummerang vents with a black check mark looking imprint doesn't look good imo doesn't flow well you can add custom exhaust from headers back that would add 50 to 60 wheel horse power. That won't void warranty cause your not modifying the engine

Slap a blower on that LT2, and be done with it for like 60k less. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Those are all very good points. And you’re 100% correct about the zr1. I think the z06 line is more track oriented. But performance tweaks aside, they are absolutely incredible and very capable cars. And what they have been able to achieve with this platform is truly amazing. I think with the redesign and the mid engine, they’re definitely going after the super cars market. If they did a great job. You get an amazing vehicle for a fraction of the price of an exotic. As for the new zr1, I’ve said it time and time again in my comments that I believe that the new zr1 will basically be the ERay with the zo6 motor and AWD. Realistically, that’s the only move I can see Chevy making here. What do you think?

@@enthusiastdriven Good luck with your channel. I'm expecting my own C8 Stingray HTC in a couple of months, an also am on a list for a Z06 (at MSRP), but that is more for investment purposes. I might eventually get the E-Ray as my daily driver to replace the Stingray. I think that is the best compromise for the money.

I’ve heard they limited production for a short period of time. But to my knowledge that’s not the case anymore. I could be wrong though. I’m in a bunch of corvette groups and haven’t heard anything like that lately.

I'm on the list at McMulcan in NH for a stingray. Started at 1385 Aug 25 2022. Was moving pretty good the first 4 months, almost 200 hundred a month then the last month it slowed almost to nothing, about 718 now.

The ERay looks really interesting. And it’s faster than a z06. Can’t knock it

@@enthusiastdriven hell yeah it does. That’s why I’m keeping my eyes on it. My goal is to get my hands on it. I love AWD vehicles. Gives you that extra beast mode grip on the road, in all road conditions. I’ve driven my Quattro in crazy weather conditions. And it’s done amazing. I even passed by a dodge scat pack when there was ice and snow on the roads in Texas. They crashed their car on the rear quarter panel and were stuck on a hill. And I just drove right by them without any issues. So the E-Ray is a game changer without a doubt! I love what GM did.

Yea I saw one in Kentucky. I think that aero comes with the zo7 package. I haven’t spec’d one so I’m not sure if you can get the aero separately or if it comes as a part of that package

I’m going to go ahead and disagree here. I think the car looks amazing for what it is. It’s a fresh design with some pleasant nods to previous corvette models. But honestly, I really hate when people compare it to lambo or a Ferrari. It’s not meant to compete with exotic Italian works of art no matter how much people want to try and compare it to them. All things considered, GM isn’t doing too bad. And if you still disagree, well just look at c8 sales over the last couple years and you’ll quickly see just how much people like this car. Take me for example… I wasn’t even a corvette fan before this car won me over entirely.

To say it can't compete against the best of the best, why not??!! Isn't that what the whole C8 platform is about??!!! The car just looks off and doesn't have the lines of the Lamborghini! How about the disaster of the interior??!! Look at what Honda did if you don't want to compete against exotics!!! Sorry, this entire C8 is a fail considering GM started off with a clean sheet of paper and this was all they could do??!!! Even the Lotus Emira looks better!!!

@@LWRC well first let’s not forget that the way the car looks is ultimately subjective. And what most people tend to forget is that it’s not just about starting with a blank sheet of paper. They have to design the car in a way that is relatively easy to produce on a massive scale. So although expensive, it’s not at the price point, quality, or level of an exotic car. Even the insanely over powered zo6 is still produced on what is considered a massive scale. And again, it’s a corvette so why would it have the lines of a lambo? It’s not meant to compete with a lambo but rather be an alternative to it. Especially when you consider not just the price of entry of an exotic car but the cost of maintenance and insurance. Interior is surely not perfect. But it’s pretty dang good considering this is gm we’re talking about here. Of course it also depends on how you option the vehicle. But compare this interior to any previous corvette and it’s miles ahead. I spent a lot of time in this car and I can honestly say that I think given it’s capabilities and styling, it’s worth the money. Bang for your buck is insane with this car considering you can get one for around the 70k-80k mark. There is literally nothing else that gives you what this car gives you considering the price. So you can compare it to exotic cars and say how it doesn’t stack up all day long. But at the end of the day, look at the price tag! If you don’t like the way it looks, that’s fair. There will be people who like it and people who don’t. That doesn’t dismiss the fact that not only are c8’s selling but they’re holding their values extremely well. Now we’ll have to wait and see what that looks like within the next few years.

@@enthusiastdriven Again, GM wanted to compete on a world level and when they come out with an inferior product, you start making excuses. Certainly, cost is a factor and styling is free!! GM designers are way off the mark. This is why the car looks awkward from nearly every angle! Even a small company like Lotus did a better job on the Emira!!! And speaking of $$$, tgere are dealers adking over $200K for the Z06 and this is with GM poor quality & poor reliability! I want to buy American but folks putting up with this just gives GM more excuses not to improve! Search RU-vid on C8 Z06 problems and see what other owners have said!! And one owner wanted to take the tires off of the carbon wheels but the dealer couldn't do it! Seeking help from GM got nothing! He ultimately had to seek help from a Ferrari dealer!!! This is astounding!!!

@@LWRC yes I’m well aware of the production issues for the zo6. And just because dealers are asking 100k over msrp doesn’t mean the car is worth it. I mean, the entire point of my video was to say that the zo6 is kind of pointless when you consider all of the factors and compare it against the z51 corvette. However, I’m not making any excuses for the c8. It has its flaws which I’m actually going to be making another video about. And I’m certainly not saying it’s the most amazing vehicle ever to exist. I’m simply stating that bang for your buck is among the best in the industry and generally people agree. Again, styling is subjective. There are tons of people that like the way it looks so it’s not much of a point to make to say it looks ugly. Especially when it’s not universally agreed upon. Take for example the previous civic type R. It’s universally agreed that it is without a doubt one of the ugliest vehicles to ever be released. And believe me, any car and I do mean any car has it’s problems. That’s the nature of the automotive industry. Whenever you mass produce something so complicated, it’s going to have problems. Yes it’s GM Yes it’s probably going to have problems Yes GM cars have been unreliable in the past Yes American cars are not at the level of some of their Japanese or German counterparts. You’re not saying anything new here or anything anyone didn’t know before. However, the C8 is still a success. It’s a marvel in both styling and performance when you compare it to any corvette that came before or anything within its price range. I get you’re disappointed with its looks and interior or overall quality. But that’s what you get when you buy American sports cars. You generally don’t buy them for their overall quality. You buy them for performance. That’s why American muscle cars will always be what they are. And they will always be the cheaper alternative to something like BMW M cars or Mercedes AMG.

@@davidmitchell1920 Those are NOT GT2 seats in this video...those are the competition seats. You can tell by many factors, first being the leather perforations--they dont have the GT2 seat pattern of small diameter perforations to large ones (timestamps 0:31, 3:08). Second, you can also tell they are competition seats from the gap in between where the thighs rest on the bottom cushion (timestamp 5:08). Couldn’t agree more. And even though the stingrays are selling at a more reasonable price now around msrp, I doubt the zo6 will ever come down… as long as people are willing to pay it…

I actually saw one recently at cars and coffee of mainline here in Philly and it was a similar color. So I do see a little resemblance. But ultimately there’s an obvious huge difference between the two. The ford GT has a much larger and more aggressive presence about it that unmistakable.

Yes 💯 I believe that the only real limitations will be either traction or the drivers ability. I’ve taken the c8 z51 (not the one in the video) on the track and it is actually mind blowing what these things can do. And the only thing holding me back was my lack of experience on the track. Don’t stop me from hitting over 130 on a straight away or taking turns at monstrous speeds lol

So it’s been confirmed by another viewer that these are the GT2 seats. It’s also labeled that way on the window sticker. I’m not sure about the confusion between the comp seats and the gt2 seats. But I’ve heard that before a couple times so 🤷🏻

So I got on the list literally the first morning they opening up preorders at various dealers. And I explained in the video sort of what took place. I had tried for months in advance to get on a list but no dealer would even consider taking my money. First time ever a dealership actively refused because they didn’t “have any information “ at that time. But yea I agree… people that have been in line since the beginning are getting theirs now. But I’ve also talked to people who were in line from the start and now have moved up to 300th or whatever place in line. It’s wild. But I think it’s simply just preferential treatment by dealers. Best bet might be to wait it out and buy one preowned. Although I imagine it’ll be sort of like what happened with the zr1’s. Being exceptionally rare and expensive, people are going to get price gouged trying to get one.

@@enthusiastdriven I disagree. I have had both. When and if you see a Z06 in person I don't think there is any doubt it's not a stingray. I never physically saw a Z06 until mine arrived at the dealer. I am in Seattle and it's a tiny corvette community. Too much money, they like the exotics. You are correct. The stingray is a great car suited for 90% of corvette owners.

@@thereissomecoolstuff you’re welcome to disagree dude. But in my first video when I was taking delivery of the stingray, we came upon a literal parking lot full of c8 zo6’s. And one happened to be parked next to a stingray. It’s very difficult to tell them apart. You can see the subtle differences up close. But generally speaking, they look identical. Im not the first person to say it. Pretty much everyone has said the same thing. Again, I obviously prefer the zo6. Side by side, it’s much easier to tell the difference.

The fact that they are using the Z06 body in the Eray dooms the Z06. $500 in wrap and 2 emblems and the only physical difference is the exhaust location. I would have never purchased a Z06 if I knew GM was going to do that. I'm trying to figure out if I like your spec...I like the grey and the blue. It's definitely different.

I really like the color combo too. The blue carrying over into the interior just helps bring it all together. Really enjoying this spec. As for the E Ray, I know a lot of purist corvette fans are not into it but I think it’s extremely interesting. A mid engine, AWD, hybrid, that doesn’t lose its glorious v8 and is faster than a zo6?? Yea as a car enthusiast, I’m very interested. I wonder how the extra weight will affect its track capability. But I guess we’ll have to wait until it’s released and someone actually does a comparison. @throttlehouse make it happen!!

Of course the zo6 is crazy. It’s the most extreme corvette to be made to date (other than maybe the c7 zr1 until the c8 zr1 is released). And I speak without having one in front of me because I’ve seen and spent a good amount of time with the c8 zo6. I was lucky enough to spot some of the first ones to be released to the public while touring the corvette museum. Check out my first video if you want to see some of those specs. However, I wholeheartedly disagree that the c8 base model is enough. It’s not enough in my opinion. It doesn’t sound as good as the z51. It lacks so many features and options. My point is that the 3lt c8 z51 is enough. The zo6 is a hard level of supercar to live up to.

The C8 zo6 is a track car the Z51 package adds Options for personal taste which is cool. The C7 Z06 and Zr1 are proven Amazing Track Cars!! I am not sure about track times for the C8 Z06 anything interesting out there on that?

I’ve seen mostly straight line runs of the zo6 vs the world basically. It’s stupid fast in a straight line. But I haven’t really seen anything track oriented for the c8 zo6. However, I have driven a c8 z51 on the track and I was blown away at what that thing can do especially on a closed, prepped surface with the right tires. I can only imagine the zo6 being a monster on the track given its wider track and significantly more power.

@@enthusiastdriven , for me to have a chance of a ZO6 (or now that I am aware of the eRay) I had to buy a 2022 LT3 loaded from my dealer. I was promised a ZO6 in 3 years. But the new E car is really pushing my buttons too. Coming from a succession of GT3s and Turbo S 911s I can say the C8 is no step child. I am loving this American Technology. When things are equal as they are now I buy American only. Great video!

I do agree that the ERay is a very interesting prospect. I’ve actually talked to a few people about it in the comments. It’s faster than the Z. It has AWD. And the two motors are independent of each other. And I believe it only adds 500lbs over the stingray. I mean, it’s impressive to say the least.

Bro I’ve seen, been in, and heard the zo6. Actually, in my first video, when I was touring the grounds of the corvette museum, I saw some of the very first zo6’s to be released to various dealers of Hendrick automotive group. We got to see various specs up close. The video is my opinion. You’re welcome to have your own. But if you haven’t been in or owned a z51 c8, I highly recommend getting some drive time with it. You’ll quickly realize that you’ll run out of driving skill before you come remotely close to maxing out the full capabilities of that car. Of course, when I say you, I’m speaking generally. So like I said in my video: yea I’d happily take a zo6. You’d be crazy not to. But that c8, spec’d like that, is more than enough for me. And I think it’s more than enough for majority of people/customers/enthusiasts or whoever.

Sorry you feel that way. Sure it looks similar to a Ferrari. But in that respect, you could say a lot of mid engine performance cars share similarities with each other. I don’t think they “stole” the design from Ferrari or anything. But I know people have referred to the c8 as the “American Ferrari”
