You’re killing me with that shirt. Lol. John Lewis of Lewis BBQ is one of my best friends and barbecue brother around here in Charleston South Carolina. I own the oldest barbecue restaurant in Charleston. My grandfather created mustard barbecue sauce. I just screenshot it and text John you wear his dang shirt and he loved it, but I may have to find me a new YT fishing teacher now. Lol.

100% spot on. Casting gear is always my first choice but got to have the spinning gear at the ready. Both are just tools in the toll box and there is a right and wrong place for each.

I wish I was able to understand this better, there are a lot of casting reels that I'd love to use... But I can pick up a 5 or 6,000 spinning reel with 50 lb braid and throw heavier baits with feathering the casts at the end to control distance and not have to worry at all about setting breaks wind backlashes... I just don't understand the advantage or at least don't see anything that's worth making the switch

Casting gear, or fly for target fishing. Docks, mangrove holes and the like. Open water, these days, I'm going spinning on a couple 7'6" rods I built for long casts. Wouldn't want to go out on the water without both.

I love both!! I use baitcaster for swim baits and flair hawk jigs because of the slower retrieve reels (I like it between 24”- 28 Inch per turn) I really helps me to slow down. I prefer spinning when skipping soft plastics or when I need longer cast for those finicky snook and tarpon. Also, at night fishing I always go with the spinning gear.

Them old ambassadors were hard to beat back in the day. My first baitcaster i believe was a shimano banham sg. Caught many of bass wading in them sand hill ponds in Washington County.

The only thing wrong with Ambassadeurs is the friction cast control. If your reel gets splashed, the oil can migrate. I have my original 350 Bantam Mag and bought a 250 as well. Magnetic all the way imo.

Capt. Thank you so much for answering my question in a complete video!! Hope to see you out there one day and I will put these tips to good use. I grew up in the nature coast hope its treating you well. I'm down in the bay now love the fishing here so much more. One last question. Any tips for young anglers that want to make a proffession in fishing?

Definitely a learning curve for me, I love the accuracy as well as the casting distance I get with Corky’s and Wake Baits with my Tatula but, I also tend to loose a lot more fish for some reason. I’m still trying to overcome the challenge though

I think you’re underestimating how amazing us younger guys are with spinning gear 😜… on a serious note, completely agree on the speed but wondering what makes a casting setup more powerful with trebles as mentioned around 5:30?

When I only fished for bass all I threw was a bait caster. I'm on the Gulf Coast of Florida now, and just ordered a Curado DC 150HG and a GLF rod to go with it to use on snook!

I started learning and switching over to casting gear a year or so ago and I have not looked back. Casting reels feel so much better in every way. I still use spinning for live bait and very light lures. Time and place for everything for sure.

Great video. As a bass fisherman, I’ve always wondered why spinning gear seems to dominate inshore fishing when it seems so similar to bass fishing. Thanks.

I guess in Florida it does but in Texas inshore is dominated by casting.

Agreed. You can be really bad at casting with a spinning combo and it will usually be inefficient at worst. You won't get excellent performance, but you won't get punished like you will with the baitcaster. You can hand a spinning combo to a new fisherman from 8 to 80 years old and with a few minute tutorial they're off and running. Baitcasting is worth the time to learn for all the reasons you mentioned, plus the accuracy is phenomenal. The one thing I've noticed is with a spinning combo, you can almost ignore the lure weight rating on the rod and get away with it, whereas that rating is important for casting accuracy and distance with baitcasting setups. I've worked with a number of models and like my two Curado DC XG reels, but I'm definitely looking forward to picking up a Tranx now that they have the 200 size one. Always looking to learn so I'm excited to see the rest of the episodes on this topic.

I Always use baitcasters... spinning reels disconnect you from the feel, they wrap line randomly causing excessive line memory, they make a lot of noise casting and reeling, they are clumsy and unbalanced... and I can cast at least 50% farther with similar line using a good baitcaster. Other than that yeah spinners are great lol

100%. Grew up on spinning setups and only started using baitcasters about 3 years ago when I got into bass fishing. I now prefer my baitcaster to my spinning setups. Even have a few for inshore saltwater too! Spinning has been relegated to finesse presentations and nearshore/offshore/jigging techniques.

Baitcasters set up properly can be used on 1/8oz to 6oz lures depending on reels and rods…with no backlash. I use them in freshwater and in the surf…Artificial or live bait too

I do have a question. Being right handed and retrieving with my left hand using a spinning set-up, why is it I see most people using the opposite for a BC?

Good day C.A..I fish the inshore waters of south Texas mainly in the Corpus Christi region. I wanted to ask you a question related to your rod selection? Now I have been following you for years from your TV programs, to now your RU-vid channel and have enjoyed all of the information you provide each time, which has improved my fishing capabilities, so for that thank you. Now for my crucial question. Why have you moved away from using Falcon rods? The reason for my question is that I have been using them ever since you promoted them. I do love them and have had many fish hooked on the end of them as well.

IMHO, it is easier to work plastics and lures with casting equipment while wading on the Texas Coast. I understand the argument, but love me some Chronarch G's!

I think it all comes down to personal preference. I use both and like both. But if I was stuck on an island and can only have 1 combo it would be a spinning combo hands down. The problem I find with casting rods especially if fighting had fighting fish like reds , snook and jacks they don't give you alot of grip to hold on your rod. Half your hand is on the reel and the other half is on the rod. Spinning wise I have Shimano stradic and every reel in-between up to the Stella plus a few Japan models like the Vanquish. Casting wise I have the Curado DC all the way up to the Metanium

I'm biased being predominantly a bass guy, but it's definitely the level of comfort and control for me. Plus with the BFS options out there now, it opens the door for more casting applications that were reserved for spinning gear. I guess the biggest downside inshore is casting into the wind. Might sacrifice a little distance, but nothing a little more thumb and maybe bumping the brake setting up can't handle. What's your maintenance regiment like using them in saltwater all the time? I just tear mine down for their annual clean/relube after the family week long trip in the fall, but curious about that when they're in the salt the vast majority of the time.

As a Texas inshore wade/kayak fishean that fishes 6-8 days a month, my gear gets wet and well used. With that, I do a 4-6 week maintenance on my reels. That maintenance includes all bearings, drag washers, and gears getting cleaned and lubed. I buy high end gear and enjoy maintaining it.

I am confused why you cast, swap hands, retrieve, swap hands, cast, swap hands, retrieve...? Left hand retrieve just felt so right to me, with a baitcast reel, after using spinning gear, that I now want to swap my conventional reels to LH retrieve. Is it just habit? Nice video, again BTW.

I haven’t tried casting reels yet other than failing on a buddy’s. I’m just getting good at spinning but have wanted to try. I’ve noticed you have videos on high tide fishing but I can’t find any on low tide. I fish the same area as you crystal river/ Ozello and can catch fish i high tide but struggle majorly at low tides. Any chance we could get a video on low tide fishing?

Tranx is set at a great price point but it’s day and night compared to the Chronarch G, IMO. If you have a chance to hold both side by side, do it, you’ll notice the difference immediately. The G is an awesome, underrated reel.

Generally I like casting gear. If your good at it you can fish 1/8 ounce and anything above. I think topwater is better on a casting rod as well. Plus the casting is more accurate and most of the time you get higher gear ratio with casting rods.

200 holds more line than the 150, just a little beefier setup in the 200 for bigger fish. I find the 150 a perfect size for my inshore fishing.
