My personal experience having both a dc and the new tranx 151 exclusively in saltwater: I learned how to use a baitcaster on the dc, no doubt about it being an absolutely fantastic teacher and newbie reel. Its also a dream for skipping. However, it is definitely really limited with the braking modes and its casting distance, it was virtually impossible for me to use the 1 setting of very little brakes so Ive had it stuck on 2 for 99.9% of its life and this is where it performs its best. 3 is basically useless if youve got braid, you’re only gonna limit yourself further and have virtually no extra control or distance for into wind and setting 4 is great for skipping or if you’re lending the rod to someone whos never thrown a caster cause its really hard to backlash and it cant throw far at all. It also struggles heavily if you’re gonna be flipping and pitching as the spool really wants to be moving fast for that dc tech to work, and it also likes to show down the lighter presentations youll be throwing a lot quicker - it shines with heavier stuff like topwaters. Its also not sealed as well as the tranx and shows a lot more corrosion cause of this much much quicker, I have yet to see any corrosion in my tranx’s lifetime where the dc had already started to feel noticeably grindier and show rust. The tranx is my everyday reel, its incredible. Ive had it for a few months now and its the best baitcaster ive thrown. It casts everything (light or heavy) much further than i can on my dc with much less effort. Its also surprisingly hard to backlash if you set it up correctly which isnt hard. It also casts into the wind like a dream, i can cast it much further into the wind than i can my dc on any setting and I’d say with less backlashes too. If I was throwing into the wind on dc setting 2 I had to thumb the spool so heavily to avoid a backlash that distance was horrendous and on setting 4 i didnt have to thumb at all but distance was hilariously bad - I’d say if you have to throw into the wind and use a dc just change spots and throw with the wind, you wont be having any fun if you stay. Best part about the tranx: not a lick of corrosion or any sign of change in its feeling, i can definitely tell its much better sealed cause i never find a drop of water inside the spool after fishing and its going to live a great life on the salt. Overall I’d say unless you’re an absolute beginner to avoid the dc, its honestly more gimmicky than anything once you know how to throw a baitcaster decently, unless of course you want pure ease of throwing or skipping. The tranx is just such a tremendously good reel thats extremely forgiving and much tougher for $60 less. Honestly my next reel i get is gonna be another tranx and my dc is gonna hit the shelf as a spare for when i take someone with me that doesnt have a rod or wants to learn how to throw a baitcaster.

Would you recommend the Tranx 200 or 150 for inshore fishing south Florida? I want to throw lighter lures/smaller swimbaits/paddle tails from 1/8-3/4 oz. But mostly within that 1/8-1/2 oz range probably. Can the 200 size cast those lures? Or would the 150 size be able to cast them easier/farther?

@@wills2397 sorry for the horrendously late response to you and everyone else that wanted an answer. I’m in south Texas but its very similar if not the same to florida, i’d say go with the 150 size. I dont really see the point in the 200 for inshore unless you’re doing something really specific that requires like 60lb+ thick ass line and you need that 200 size spool to fit enough on there. I use 20-30lb powerpro on my 150 and i have a ton of line for whatever i catch down here all the way up to giant bull reds and smaller tarpon. All my lures range from 1/16oz all the way up to even 1oz if I’m fishing really deep channels. The reel size number isnt necessarily directly related to the weights you’re throwing but rather how deep the spool is and how much line you can fit on it which in turn affects lure weight cause you dont wanna throw a giant 3oz spoon on 30lb braid so you’d get the bigger reel with a bigger spool for bigger line.

I've used a tranx and own 2 Curado DCs hg and Xg. I prefer the Curado over the tranx. The tranx for my liking is to light for a low profile casting reel. Also the tranx feels cheap vs the Curado Curado to me is a better over all do all reel covers more situations.

I have all models of the Tranx with the exception of the 500. In my opinion they are the best and only choice for saltwater baitcasting applications. I have both the Curado and SLX DC's and use them for freshwater but not sure how they would hold up for saltwater use. Now if I didn't have to pay for them that may be a different story.

Capt R , I have all Shimano reels, love how smooth they are. The thing that I find difficult is that I’m right handed and the right hand retrieve feels best but I like the rod in my right arm. So I reel left. I really couldn’t never understand this with the bait caster, all my spinners are left hand retrieve. I wish you would make a video and explain. Dominant hand/ arms etc. I might not be explaining myself exactly how I want to ask. Hymn. The bait caster reel feels great to reel on the right side. But I don’t like holding the rod in the left hand. Seems like I have more power hold the rod in the right arm but again more power reeling with right hand. So is it better to reel right and train my left arm ???
@kevinlynch6799
@kevinlynch6799 5 месяцев назад
Great question: I find it inefficient casting a right handed baitcasting reel if you are right handed. You cast over your right shoulder/waist and then, either while the lure is in flight or immediately as it hits the water, you have to move the rod to the left hand to crank with a right handed reel. Solution: Buy left handed reels. Be well.

I picked a Tranx 150 at the begining of the season. It was great for the first couple months . . . then is started developing a thing where about every 3rd of 4th cast, it just 'flubs' mid-cast. The spool / lure just stops well short of the target . . . no backlash, just a weird halt. Really strange, because I've kep the reel immaculately clean, and I only use it for light square bill crank baits in certain situations. I've followed shimanos guidlines for maintenance / oiling etc. religiously , but I'm assuming it needs more service than what I'm giving it. That said, I'm a bit disappointed in this reels durability overall . . . I haven't been able to get more than a 1/2 season without the reel needing to be professionally serviced. I had higher hopes for the Tranx with the use of bushings vs bearings holding up better . . . but it 'seems' it's just not the case. I do really like the reel itself when it's working . . . but like my past experiences with Shimano . . . they are very sensitive to any type of dirt, debris, dust, salt etc etc. The Tranx is supposed to be the 'workhorse' in the lineup . . . and while it may hold up better than others, it's certainly not bullet proof. Take all that for what it's worth.
