I loved this new format of your videos. It's slow-paced, without so many animations and gimmicks. Instead, you provided substantial information and offered a better way of communicating with the audience. It's better for you, as you'll save time on editing, and for the audience, we can focus more on the content without being overwhelmed by constant dopamine release.

Ed, I'm excited to watch this video. I'm rethinking my content strategy at the moment. Really it's somewhat experimental. My old approach was to try to maximize views because I thought that the more eyes I get on my content, the better that would be towards reaching my goals. But so far that's not working. I'm not getting a lot of views, and I'm not even really sure if that the products/services I have to offer really interest my target audience or not. Going forward, I'm not gonna try to focus on views. My main aim will be to create content that appeals to an audience that aligns with my business goals. Working hard to increase my views is becoming too volatile.

Good move Ed. It's a way of dealing with the flaw in YT & SM audience systems. You said to me some years ago about not wanting a lot of subscribers... My subject area critical mass is about 10k to 20k subscribers which would be manageable but more importantly about 2k views initially CPM £15 .. Which means not worth doing unless... Keep your old channel active... So that people can still learn.. and there are so many YT education channel's that make good reference to you.. I think this video should be where you put channel intro (subbed or not) and maybe a video occasionally to guide those interested in what you are doing now. Another thought is shorter video's on your old channel that reference a video on your new channel that explain how to translate the concept for another purpose. Also with your new channel I think the CPM will be higher overall.. Only problem (which exists for others as well) is when they have learnt, why would they stay.. and you end up with dead subscribers (part of the YT & SM flaw) that don't watch and stifle the video. It's like someone only talking about the same thing every time you see them. Your real income area will be 1 to 1 or group and public speaking also course's.. Companion channel's are the other way but because of the flaw they don't work as well as they could, same with Playlists.. A Playlist containing video's on... Firewood 12 volts DC Composting toilets Wind turbines Solar panels. ... does the Algorithm see it's living off-grid..? or... a load of separate subjects? or... people most likely will watch these together.. but not consistently! add a story aspect like Boat's or the Canadian wilderness (the place of cold or when it's warm things stinging or biting) ... What does the Algorithm see then? .. and who does it serve the video's to? ... and if it gets it wrong.. the video fails.. Is this the reason for the 'For You' shelf on the Home Page? Will I harm your channel not watching all your content... I think YT changed an aspect of the algorithm from a viewers consistency to number of videos watched... There is space for the less focused channel's... the Tortoise and the Hare.. There will definitely be elements of your content on your new channel that I could apply to my channel in a less formal or focused way .. fitting or reflecting a Boating Off-Grid Lifestyle.. but which... and how do you tell me which is relevant? The wonderful thing about YT for me has been the interactions with people all around the world, some have been long-term for many years. I think the key is the comments section.. too big and it becomes unmanageable. The interactivity of creator and their audience is essential on many levels. Thanks Ed for everything.. Maybe this will inspire a video 😻

Yes, that is 100% correct. 6 years ago things were different.... but now the algorithm is very specific and you literally have to push to the same audience over and over again.... if you create a different video, you get punished right away... I see it with my channel very clearly

This was a great video, Ed. You really hit on the problem with RU-vid now. It forces creators to be so specialist that it is now almost impossible to steer anywhere different and be a generalist. I do news and current affairs from an educational perspective. At one time, I could be fairly diverse with topics and do well. But I have sensed that this isn’t the case anymore. Unless I do “mass market” videos, they tend to sink. A lot of the problem is the way it tests new videos. A lot of my viewers are interested in Russia and Ukraine. But I am not a Russian and Ukraine channel. (There are lots of them already.) the problem is that if I publish a video on something else, the Russia and Ukraine audience doesn’t respond well. YT then decides it isn’t a good video as my ‘regular audience’ doesn’t respond and so doesn’t push it. The trouble is that more specialist can’t work in my case. Well, it can, but it fundamentally defeats what I set up the channel to do - cover international relations from a more informed perspective.
@WyattChristman
@WyattChristman 2 месяца назад
You know I tried an initial experiment where I made it so existing subscribers were NOT NOTIFIED when it published...what was interesting is it had a much higher CTR than similar videos done on the channel in the past. The video did well...I did this because I am still hesitant to start a new channel...
@JamesKerLindsay
@JamesKerLindsay 2 месяца назад
@@WyattChristman Thanks so much. That is fascinating. I’m not sure if I’d be brave enough to do that. 🙂 But I could see how it works. I just wish that the algorithm could be a little more discerning and recognise that when I post a video about an African country, it really should look to viewers (my subscribers or otherwise) interested in African politics. It would be good to perhaps have some way of flagging this. Tags might have once done this, but it seems that it doesn’t work like that any more.

I’ve often watched RU-vid how to grow your channel videos and found they don’t apply to my niche at all and I can’t find any info specific to my niche, which is a niche within a genre that there is little info on. Vlogs. Just trying to find info on how to tell a story in a vlog that makes everyday life more interesting. I already live a very unusual life compared to most, but I don’t know how to tap into that and present it in a way that’s interesting and compelling but is also practical and doable given the amount of time I put into just living the life I want to show people. I don’t even think the many videos I’ve watched on Film Booth apply in most ways.

This is a tough one as I've had nearly a complete opposite experience with my channel. I started with a niche with lots of exact tech related to building motorcycles which people greatly appreciated. The channel grew but not quickly as that audience is so small. I had a few more generalized videos gain a ton of traction which nearly doubled my subscriber base and now has flipped my viewer demographics to those who prefer less focused videos. When I try to make a tech heavy video there are not enough views to even feel like I can justify making the video. My heart is in the focused videos but results only show it's not worth chasing. Definitely in the middle of making changes right now.

Great video Ed, one downside of specialist though will be content burnout or content droughts. There's just only so many specialist topics to talk about for years on end. As an established brick and mortar service business, I feel this frustration. All the advice for new RU-vidrs is targeted at becoming famous/monetized on RU-vid. But so many of the RU-vidr tactics would feel disingenuous or even turn off our existing clients if I started to use them. I have to go really far into niche territory to find anyone talking about using RU-vid to drive 6 figure leads to an off platform sales funnel.

We left a channel with around 300k subs earlier this year for similar reasons. Hard decision for sure, but it had to be done. We are going all out on the new channel and are starting to gain some traction, with the exact avatar we want/need. RU-vid is like 1000xs harder now than it was 5 years ago because of all the new channels, but it's also the explosion of outsourcing to lower income countries. It's not any different than when all the manufacturing jobs went to china, vietnam, etc, etc 30 years ago. Now its very hard to compete unless you have an editor, thumbnail designer, and more from low income countries. You can outsource your editing for a mere fraction of the cost of an in house editor. Its sad, but true. THIS is IMO the biggest change youtube has undergone over the last 5 years. THE EXPLOSION of cheap labor. Even bigger than AI.

Love this mate. I’ve started uploading vids with little/no editing, purely sitting down and chatting about a topic with relatable stories of clients which I know my target market with resonate with. Looking forward to seeing the growth of this channel Ed!

Mihaly's 2nd book breaks down the flow state very well. Essentially, one needs to engage in an activity that gives us just enough challenge to stimulate our focus and attention.

This was a super useful video for putting in context the benefit of niching from a media perspective. Also very useful to watch after watching Alex Hormozi’s pivot for greater… dimensionality I guess

Excellent! It seems like you are going the "focus on the problems you solve first and then a specific niche you want to serve"...this makes it easier to identify with and later you can expand to another specific niche of people if you want - still problem/solution focused just where the content is angled with language/angle for a specific group...you could reword the same problems for a different set of people yet it still remains at the core the same problems...which makes it easier because the focus is also on specific skills - those skills and problems never change yet how you talk about them does...

Good man Ed. I love the underproduced (although still beautifully produced!) talking head, straight to camera. It instils relatability and empathy in all the right ways. All the best for the new, ultra-focussed direction. I'm in.

I've started an embriodery channel. Will be following you as I want to niche down and focus on building a group of followers that resonates with me and my offers. Small but truly engaged. I hope this is where you are going with your new journey.

Thanks Ed. Loved it. I have rolled this over so much over the last year. Your analysis of it is terrific. Without going into specifics of my channel I want to lean into the education and less entertainment (I think). I think that could be cool. Thanks for your thoughts. One note, if you could break down the pros of building a website vs buying one of the many stock websites (or even free websites) I’d love that. For me, I’d like a space where you can discuss a topic or experiment then distribute labs and other educational resources. Thanks for what you do!

Ed, love your content and I'll keep watching your new content as well since it aligns with my ambitions. Oh and btw, if you seek some help in the kitchen get more experience with your oven, I got a few vids for you that might help... hehe, first tip, when your oven is hot, open it slightly, to release steam, then all the way, otherwise the heat blasts in your face. Thanks man, until the next!!

Excellent choice. I was watching a video a couple of months ago and realised the actual pragmatic differences between the different RU-vid strategies for different goals. And I realised that so many of the channels I followed might be giving good advice but it wasn’t the right advice for me. I’m not an influencer, I’m not the product. I run a business and need to use RU-vid to grow the business.

In business school this past quarter. We were discussing blue vs red ocean. Red ocean is where everyone is in business/mass market. And blue ocean is where a specific type of person is/very niche. I asked my professor if this could apply to a personal brand as well and he said that it most definitely could. Which is similar to this video.
