I went to the same college and finished in 2002. The last subject we did before clinics was a business course which was quite excellent. ( All of the teachers and course content was extremely high standard ) We had a June Hope workbook which I actually used when I left and started business. In that subject we learned how many different areas we needed to be efficient in to succeed. I found the business side of it super challenging. The teacher told us that only 5 percent of us would succeed in business. Great, we had all spent around 30 grand on our fees, books and time etc. I'd spent 7 years finishing the course. I really wanted to succeed but if I am honest with myself I didn't succeed at all , I succeeded in my business becoming a massage business mainly and I made excellent money but I did not feel competent enough to feel like I really knew what I was doing in terms of naturopathic medicine. I needed support, I needed to stop expecting so much of myself. We are expected to know what doctors know in many ways and then go outside of the box with it. It takes a lot of study even beyond what we did at college. Unless you specialize and focus in on a particular area you possibly won't gain mastery and feel competent Few people can do it is what I honestly thought. Charging such enormous fees, it just didn't sit right with me. I felt like a fraud to be honest. These days we have reps from companies like Ariya who can help you so much. But back then you were on your own. I tried to start again recently and with the support I felt that I could do it. It's been all those years and I still have trouble letting go of whether I went down the right path. To be honest, if I had my time over I would choose something different maybe fashion design or writing and editing. Naturopathy is an extremely difficult field to ever make the cost of your studies worthwhile. It just is not that popular with the general public and most people don't even really know what we do. They think it is something which is flakey which is really annoying given the depth of science which we embarked on. When I went to college it was greatly looked down on to engage in unscientific practices. It is a greatly misunderstood field.

I totally agree, which is why I feel the degree qualification should be the minimum, so that we do feel more equipped and are better educated and informed when liaising with other health professionals and our patients. In other countries you have to get a doctorate before you can study naturopathy as it's a post graduate qualification. I have mixed feelings on that, but it might solve this issue. It's really unfair how hard it is to develop a career, given the amount of money spent on the education, I totally agree. I'm grateful for the knowledge and growth that came out of my studies, but I feel the same- if I could do it over, I would have done something else. It's been great to connect with you, thank you so much for your in-depth insights! I wish you all the best 🙏🥰
@MariGolds2
@MariGolds2 Год назад
@@CassandraEvergreen thank you for your reply! I'm not sure the doctorate was the answer for me. It was offered just as I was leaving and I had no intentions of spending another 10 thousand and two years of my life completing it. I had a look at the content and decided that it was just padding and more depth of what we had already done. I'm glad I didn't do it because of the way that naturopathy is quite blacklisted with the government and doesn't have a great reputation. In my opinion this has more to do with the big pharma agenda than anything else. Now we have Naturopathy integrating with this very monster. Definitely not the art I set out to practise. It annoys me that I am ineligible for most health care work with my advanced diploma, especially as a true health advocate I have avoided certain medical procedures. We have much to offer and underestimate the value of it. Adhering to nature's laws is a common sense that society is trained to reject.

I completed the Graduate Diploma of Integrative Medicine at Swinburne University many years before the 2012 witch hunt that saw complementary medicine thrown out of academia. That was unfortunate because it moved the courses into the private sector and into the hands of a few remaining operators. Vincristine, vinblastine, digitalis, Metformin, aspirin, morphine, etc all come from herbs, and these are just a few of the drugs that nature offers. So anyone that suggests that the study of "natural medicine” is quackery is simply an uninformed fool, and the drug companies know this because they spend billions on research. A quote from the Lancet (Canning, Death and Waltham, 2021) ...yes, Death is his real name.... States that "Almost two-thirds of all small molecules approved by the US Food and Drug Administration between 1981 and 2014 were either inspired by, derived from, it mimicked natural resources or consisted of natural products.” So, the scope and practice of complementary medicine, when coupled with the appropriate evidence based training and research can be rewarding and an addition to public health. It only becomes a liability when the true nature of the science is unjustly ridiculed or practiced by people who have no business doing so. It can otherwise be a rewarding career.

I feel people should journey more on what they want and why they want it when it comes down to career paths. Because you can generally dive into something which you dont have a meaning in terms of passion and end up discouraging alot of other people out there who find a deep connection and meaning in natural medicine. Personally I am dealing with chronic acid reflux something the medicine world will never venture to cure, research or even treat as a serious disorder and to find holistic approaches for my condition has been hopeful. And to be qualified as a naturopathic doctor assists in terms of your own practice to be more flexible in terms of their licensure to run more tests and be able to diagnose their patients. So find yourself and path. I advocate for natural health approaches as they give hope to alot of people out there that the medicine field has shut a blank door on their face either treating their symptoms and disorders as not sufficient to give attention to. And how much toxins and chemicals do we have to put in our bodies in order to realize this bug pharmaceutical scam its like gambling with our livelihood. I hope you find your way .

Hi Hessa, thank you for sharing 😊 I feel that sharing my experience and opinion shouldn't discourage those who are truly passionate and know within their heart that this is the path they want to pursue. I believe wholeheartedly that there is a place for naturopathy and I still see naturopaths myself for my own health. I believe however, that we should be objective and transparent about what the journey is like right now so that we can continue to increase the standards to a level of scrutiny it can withstand. Until that happens, my years of study have fortunately helped me to discern between those that are trustworthy and those that aren't. I hope one day the standards are such that anyone that calls themselves a naturopath is someone whose knowledge you can trust to a certain standard, so that the risk around this industry doesn't keep people from seeking it out. I'm so glad natural medicine has been of benefit to you, it's so valuable. Take care ❤️

Really interesting. I began a Bachelor of Applied Science (Naturopathy) in 1989 with Southern Schools in Melbourne. There was no FEE-help then. SSNT as a business, offered night classes for mature-age students who had full-time day jobs. I was 28 and most of my fellow students were in the 25-40 age range. Each semester, subjects such as Herbal Medicine, Reflexology and other cool things would be offered. So I would enrol, lay down the money then .. there wouldn't be enough students enrolled for a night class, but I could do it in the day. This went on for two years. At the time, we didn't know we were being played and SSNT actually harrassed me for years, claiming that I hadn't withdrawn before the deadline. Your video reminds me of what drew me to naturopathy and what I loved so much about what I did learn. I went on to specialise as a consultant/advocate in an area of mental health. My clients experienced a lot of support using flower essences.

it's frustrating that colleges/uni's allow so many people to enrol in courses that will not give them a job at the end. I'm almost 40, I have two kids and I pay a lot for a naturopath for myself and my son so I'm looking to study because realistically it will pay for itself lol. it's like Nutritionist you can use that term without having degree. So I ended up studying nutrition cert 4 coz I was like omg that's hectic haha.

It is crazy hey, and so much marketing goes into getting people to enrol in these degrees by saying you can "gain a rewarding career in naturopathy" but it's just not realistic for most. And yes, it is really expensive to see a naturopath! I think I talk more about that in my video on 'the 5 worst things about studying naturopathy', because I think that's a result of the negative feedback loop that keeps naturopathy out of mainstream society, amongst many other larger factors. The good thing about nutrition as you say, is at least you have to have some sort of qualification, so the general public is still protected on some level! Thank you for commenting 😊

Great advice Caasandrra. As i have a little trust in allopathic medicine, I have changed quite a few Naturopaths. The last one I hope does not ever practice naturopathy again. Just because this naturopath was from overseas, does not mean that they are highly accredited. This natrupath that i found out , spoke on a foreign language radio station. I felt unconfortable after what I found out what this nauropath said behind my back. My depression is not a joke so I don't expect to hear that "I have my own world". When I said that i don't want alcohol based preparations for my body, I think the naturopath took me as a joke, but my money was accepted. To the best of my knowledge, this naturopath no longer practices. As a client I should not have to express myself in two languages. I would of considered becoming a Naturopath myself. Another Naturopath no longer communicated with my spuse and I when we replied that we are doing our own wellness and fitness.Naturopathy and other complementary therapies will not succeed with a narrow minded allopathic medicine attitude.

Nice video. Although I'm sure naturopathy is not a completely perfect practice, you have to realise the reasons it probably does not get the credit it deserves, here in Australia and in the western world, is because of the big pharmaceutical industry. Seriously, they dominate and the won't allow competition. In fact I'd argue they are less credible. The amount of medicines that don't do jack, you only need to look into the shady practices they get up. Its all about $, not your health. You talk about evidence based medicine. As bat sh*t crazy as it sounds, they've never even isolated viruses properly. Go look into it.

Thanks for commenting. The way I see it is that It's definitely not black and white on either side and there's corruption and ulterior motives on both sides. People should be taught critical thinking in primary school and onwards so that everyone has the skills to discern between what is likely to be genuine and safe and what isn't. At the end of the day, I can critically analyse a scientific paper- who funded it, does their conclusion match their findings, how did they conduct that study and does that sound logical? And so on. So if there's science behind it, there's data I can critically analyse. If there's no data it's harder to evaluate. It's definitely harder to get funds for scientific research into naturopathy and other natural medicines, so yes, there is a deficit and disadvantage built into the scientific industry towards natural medicine. A lot of people are quick to jump to black and white conclusions though, such as that naturopathy must be superior because it's disadvantaged, and this fits a narrative around suppression. That may be true (that naturopathy is suppressed) but the reality is that some naturopathy treatments are more effective than allopathic treatments, and some allopathic treatments are more effective than naturopathic ones. Both are valuable. *Most* science isn't entirely conclusive, and that's the nature of the scientific method. If you're wary about listening to science because you feel there isn't enough information, you should be even more concerned with naturopathy because there's even less information. My point is that we need to individually critically analyse the information that is available. (And most people don't even know what that means or how to do it which is why we have so many dangerous conspiracies consuming people's identities). Treatments that have been studied have more information and thus more data to critically analyse. The push should be to make conducting studies on natural medicine easier, and then to look at those findings objectively. People who don't know how to critically analyse something are more likely to ignore this objective data if it doesn't align with their beliefs though- so really the issue really is lack of critical analysis. People need to learn to critically analyse, and adopt new findings, even if they negate currently held beliefs.

Totally agree about "evidenced based science" It is a comment that big pharma uses to discredit natural medicine all the time. They will have you believe that naturopathic medicine has no credible science based studies. Not true ! Probably the reason that natural medicine has now become " integrated medicine " Totally sold out to big pharma. $$$ What is becoming pandemic in this country is government indoctrinated "science" The quality of this science is now totally corrupted as evidenced by the roll out of poisons compulsory or not. Worse still is that it is becoming more difficult to get work in any health field unless you belong to a credible association eg APHRA of course. This includes mental health fields such as psychology and psychotherapy.

My partner’s mum is studying naturopathy, but this seems to predispose her to believing deceptive data or non science-based things she finds on facebook because they copy the language style of her actual course. She becomes very convinced of these things, such as thinking my partner’s reflux medication would definitely cause cancer, due to a post that presented a confident misinterpretation of human physiology. I researched it heavily to double-check and the only real long-term effect of the safe use of that medication is the prevention of some of the health complications of long-term reflux. Critical thinking is imperative when looking at any claims about any subject but it's especially important for health related topics. I understand how frustrating it can be to have someone not take a critical thinking approach. Unfortunately I don't have any resources as I'm currently just as stumped as you about how to talk to my own loved ones who are believing Facebook posts and internalizing new beliefs based on very questionable sources. So just to clarify are you saying that in Australia you don’t qualify for hecs if you’re not studying full time?
@CassandraEvergreen
@CassandraEvergreen Год назад
You don't qualify for HECS unless you're studying at a government university. No government universities in Australia offer Natural Health related degrees. But there is an alternative scheme called HELP-debt. However, you do not qualify for HELP debt unless you are studying full time. And full time at The Endeavour a College of Natural Health (and potentially other private universities) is not always 4 subjects per semester; it may be 5 or 6 depending on the weight of each subject. At government universities, to qualify for HECS you also need to be full time, but unless I am mistaken, this will be a minimum of 4 subjects per semester. Hope this helps 🙂

@CassandraEvergreen Год назад
@@rachelkate1514 I'm re-reading what I wrote and I'm so sorry, I got this all wrong. I was in a rush and stressed yesterday when I wrote this. I was getting government payments mixed up with debts. Let me start again. You qualify for HECS (at gov uni's) and HELP-debt (at private uni's) no matter your study load! There's a scheme at gov uni's called Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) which is granted to every domestic student. It's where the gov pays about half of your fees for every subject. This isn't usually offered at private uni's, which increases fees and therefore the amount of debt you go into (which is important if you're using HECS or HELP because there is a limit to how much you can borrow). If you plan on getting government student payments, you don't qualify for them unless you are studying full time. This, is the issue I had and the one I spoke about it the video; I thought I was studying full time at 4 subjects per semester, and I was getting government payments- but the gov called me up to tell me I wasn't full time and that I have to pay them back for the entire previous year. I'm trying to make sure that doesn't happen to anyone else. But if you aren't relying on gov payments you don't need to worry about what your study load is 😊 My brain totally failed me yesterday, I'm so sorry!

omg. you poor bugger with the allowance/credit debt. Yes its only about a 50 k a year job if your only being a practitioner. I think its expected that you would release a product line to rake in the bucks.

I think so too, and to create a product as well as a robust marketing strategy takes money to begin with and most people don't have access to those resources unfortunately. Thank you for your comment 😊

Actually not being regulated is a bonus. I worked as a mortgage broker, highly regulated, imagine paying endless annual fees to regulatory bodies. That's what regulation is.

Pros and cons. Pros are that the term naturopath would actually be synonymous with a minimum level of education, it would improve public safety and trust and therefore potentially facilitate its integration into conventional medicine, and also stimulate research and development in the field, leading to improvements in evidence based medicine relevant to naturopathy. Sure there'll likely be more red tape, fees and bureaucracy but it's a balancing act. Capitalism 🤷‍♀️

Yeah naturopaths definitely aren't doctors! They do have some value though. Thanks for another comment 😊

In an ideal world, naturopathy would be included in the degree curriculum for becoming a medical doctor, so that they’re trained and knowledgeable in it, other holistic/integrative medicine approaches, *and* Western medicine. Approach that’s highly unrealistic though…

This is the absolute ideal I agree! Doctors should be healers. I think in some countries like the UK you may need to do an undergrad degree in medicine before you can study naturopathy but I'm not certain- similar (but more limiting) concept.

I have sympathy for how you struggled and the fact that earning a living was going to be hard and can thus understand why you looked for a career with better prospects. I agree. with you. Yet to assume allopathic medicine, the dominant paradigm is the height or pure science and run/managed by the best scientists etc with the highest integrity, which is what most people assume when they compare alternatives with "real medicine", is not in line with reality. There are some aspects which are very good, but generally there is a lot of bad science, supporting Big Pharma and thus the reality is hidden away behind stats and data that are created for the paradigm and fall in line with who pays the Piper. That is not to say that good science does not occur in this arena, it is just that the waters get terribly murky. One only has to look at the data on iatrogenic deaths, which seem quite consistent across the first world. Often among the top 3 to 5 causes of death in national communities. Mostly this is caused by adverse effects of drugs. This is why there should be more interest in natural approaches to health in my view. Hope your new career takes off however. Good luck.

I don't make that assumption but thanks for sharing, good luck to you too!

The ONLY naturopathic college here in NZ recently had their "advanced 2 year diploma" (which requires a one year level 5 diploma before enrolling) downgraded from level 7 (equal to a bachelors) to level 6 (without shortening the program). This means that it takes a year longer than any other level 6 diploma in the country (including the first year at level 5), and after graduating, you can't even say you are a tertiary studies/degree-level graduate 😂 Being the only tertiary provider of naturopathy qualifications (none of the polytecs or unis teach it) means it's also the industry standard as well which is just ludicrous 😂

Wow that is bizarre! I wonder what the reasoning behind it is. Thanks for sharing and sorry that that's the situation in NZ 😒

@CassandraEvergreen Yeah, that's why I decided to go into Physiology instead. Dietetics requires a Masters (so 5 years total) here but Clinical Physiology just takes 4 years (a 3 year bachelor & a 1 year post grad diploma).
