This is what the hospital is like. I've worked as a nurse in the hospital for a year in a half--one year in ICU and now I'm in the ER. I also was a PCT in the ICU for over a year. You're right, the hospital setting is very demanding. When you think you've done a great job throughout your hard 12 hour shift, management is always there to let you know what you need to improve on. It's legit like customer service. I remember the other day I had a great experience with my patient in the ER. Whenever the patient was leaving she thanked me for taking great care of her. Instead of acknowledging that I helped the patient, my boss pulled me aside and said Meghan why didn't you ask her to complete our survey on her experience in the ER??? It's things like this that push nurses away. In the ICU my patient would be coding and my manager would be standing at the door asking me why my name wasn't written on the white board. Although the unit I'm on now is better than the last, there are still plenty of days where I dread going into work. We shouldn't have to "recover" from our jobs.

Hi Priscilla. I am so happy for you to find something you enjoy doing. I am a RN too who quit my hospital job and nursing home job to go back to school to become a FNP. All this time I thought it was just me who was too weak for this field. To make matters worse, experienced nurses were lecturing me for not knowing anything (I was a new grad nurse). Now I know I am not the only one who felt that way and thought I was crazy. Anyway, thank you for this video. It takes a lot of courage to talk about this. Have a blessed day.

Thank you so much posting this! I resonated so deeply with everything you said. I too have been feeling tired and burned out from work. I don't have panic attacks before going in but I do have that feeling of dread when I drive to work maybe half the days if I haven't had enough time to recover. Once you feel that you have everything under control management comes through and takes away more. I too, have always been a naturally creative person but find myself too tired from work to put any effort into my hobbies since family and housekeeping comes first. So thank you for acknowledging that burden many of us are faced with!

You can get mega prepared in a hospital with super sick patients and then later on take those skills to another area of nursing that is more up your ally. Some peds and labor/delivery nurses do this too because not all of them get the chance to start where their heart is at. I wish you the very best in your first job next week! tI could cry this is so relatable! thank you for sharing your journey. I have been a nurse for five years now, have made three bedside transfers from telemetry to critical care and now a new icu. I have been in my current role for 4 months and have felt the urge to leave the hospital. I am so heartbroken because similar to you, there is that faith component. letting go of icu feels like giving up on my "calling" but God has been showing me the root of pride in that mentality. this has been a crazy season of trusting in His plans and His purposes for me. I actually tried pursuing an ambulatory surgery facility and all the doors kept closing but I just accepted a job in a private cardiology office doing stress testing while remaining PRN in the hospital so we shall see! thanks for sharing your story! couldn't relate more to the exhaustion and burnout. I honestly feel like God lead me to your video. I’ve been going through the exact same thing for the past two years working nights on a crazy MedSurg unit straight from Nursing School. It got to the point where I questioned my career knowing that nursing has always been my passion. For the life of me I couldn’t understand why something I’ve always loved and was so eager to do left me feeling so empty and unfulfilled every time I punched out to go home. More times than none I find myself crying on my way to work because the anxiety is through the roof before I even get there... I can relate to every single thing that you mentioned. I know God has a plan for me so I’ve been trying to stay hopeful. I too have applied for a new job and the posting has been removed for a while now, but I prayed and God told me this job was for me so I’ve been staying prayerful and waiting to hear from them. I was in your same shoes. Right out of nursing school I started on a TCU floor attached to a hospital. It was an elderly TCU, so it was basically a combination of a med surg floor and a nursing home in one. I questioned my years of schooling and really asked myself “what did I just get into?”. After months of working there, I took a risk and applied for different clinic jobs. I ended up landing a clinic RN job at an asthma and allergy clinic and have been working there for almost 2 years now. I get paid more than I did at my TCU job, I don’t feel stressed as much and don’t feel like my license is always on the line. I love my patients, coworkers, hours (like you I work 4 days a week, Tuesday through Friday). I get paid holidays off and feel like I have a life outside of work but love going to my work everyday. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to bedside or hospital nursing. Clinic/outpatient jobs give you the freedom, flexibility, and stress free lifestyle as a nurse, while still giving you that fulfilling feeling of making a difference in the community.

Thank you for your video! I'm currently at the end of my first semester of nursing school, and, while I love taking care of patients at the bedside, working on those units is not for me. The units I've been on are chaotic and I can't envision putting myself through that kind of stress every day for the rest of my life. love your videos and your honesty. im a tech at a hospital and even i have anxiety at times feeling like im being pulled in many different directions to get all these smaller tasks done for ppl and i don't like to keep patients or nurses waiting but things definitely add up when it's busy. i see how stressful it is for nurses having the responsibility of patients lives in their hands and getting everything done at the right times. it's a lot to prioritize and manage. some days im like maybe i could be a nurse and other days i question if i really want to stay in healthcare. i kno there is so much flexibility with nursing job opportunities but if im going to go to school to become a RN then i kno i would want to start out in a hospital so i learn the skills and get the experience that most RNs have. tho at the same time i kno how hard it is working in the hospital, what is expected of the nurses, and the little support the nurses have at times and so that turns me off to becoming a nurse knowing i would work in a hospital in the beginning. i kno i could eventually transition to working somewhere else but in order to get the right foundation and experience i would have to work in the hospital and i genuinely don't kno if i could do it

I definitely feel all the negative emotions that you have felt when you were still working in the hospital and I'm at the point that I wanted to find a less stressful nursing job because I'm also passionate in nursing but not passionate in working in a hospital setting. Please please pray for me that I also find the nursing job that God want me to go to. Thank you so much for your video! I felt less alone in thinking this way about my job because some of the people that I spoke to about how I feel told me to keep my job because of the money and more benefits but the thing is I don't feel happy at all with where I am right now. Anyway, I work as a clinical research nurse and study coordinator at the university and I couldn't be happier because it's still a clinical setting (I can't imagine my life without clinical field) but I do 9-5, no nights, all weekends and bank holidays off, and a better salary and career prospectives. I'm able to use my background and potential in the pharma industry, I'm doing MSc in clinical trials. For 7 years I was constantly miserable now I'm finally happy. My mom was a nurse and I remember her coming home very tired, stressed, and even angry all the time. Some days she would eat a bite or two of food and then head to bed. She also worked with a lot of lazy nurses. A job is a job though. I am an accountant and although I like the actual work, it's pretty much dealing with bitches all day. Bitchy coworkers and bitchy managers, both male and female. Oh well.
@aileensuarez9192
@aileensuarez9192 4 года назад
coupleofbeers31 you get lazy coworkers and bitches everywhere, the thing is that in a job like nursing that you have patients life in your hand, it creates an extra amount of stress, because there is no time for errors. Having bad coworkers put more stress as well, is like too much stress.
@catbee1452
@catbee1452 4 года назад
Its really not about working with bitchy people. Some of the bitchiest people are sick patients. This was never the problem for me. A sick patient is NOT a happy camper. But this is exactly what I loved about nursing..working with the most difficult, angry and non compliant patients! Once they understood that you were there to help them unconditionally, trust started to build. It's this connection I loved most. But healthcare regulations removed this connection really. There was no time to connect with the people that needed you the most. You just had enough time to complete the copious amounts of data entries. Doing your best was not sufficient for the administration; they wanted even more. Being a nurse is different than being an accountant when it comes to the reasons nurses burn out. When you are dealing with life and death, there is a very deep meaning attached to the relationship between nurses and the patients who entrust their lives to us. Mathematical errors will not kill someone. In healthcare, PTSD is not uncommon. Not so sure you see that in accounting. Perhaps this explains why your mom was always tired, stressed and angry. She was deep fried from the constant demands. It is both physically and psychologically exhausting.

I am going through this RIGHT NOW! I am a float pool nurse. We float every 4 hrs most shifts so we walk out of one disaster discharging and picking up new patients then start the same rat race over for the next 4 hours while adding in wound dressings that didn't get done the 1st 4 hours etc etc. The SHIFTS can be AWFUL! Some days I just want to break down mid shift, but there is NO TIME for that at all. I rarely get a lunch break or a bathroom break and often have to stay late to finish charting so 12 hour shifts are easily 14 hour shifts. I often feel like 50 dollars an hour wouldn't be enough for what we do...and yet we will never ever make that. I am job hunting, but worry that the money will be so much less. I can't cry anymore, ache anymore, and spend my days off barely able to move while my kids wonder why I'm acting like I got hit head on with a baseball bat. It is time for a change for floor nursing, or hospitals won't have ANY LEFT. I Don't know how people do this 30+ years. The ones who do Are True SUPER HEROES! THEY DESERVE A DISNEY SUPERBOWL PARADE DAILY!!!

Yes, some days are hella busy in CA but it’s just different. Worst days in CA have been tremendously better than most of my normal days in MI. Switching from 12s to 8s helped a lot too! It’s always been this way, or worse. I’m a 59 y/o male nurse. I worked med- surg many years. Hard life, and went home many times feeling like I’d been hit by a Mack truck. Army Nurse Corps was my next job, and yes, worry it. Now I work VA pulmonary. Cush job for an old fart. I don’t know how well I’d handle med-surg anymore? You put time and money into nursing, so tough it out while searching for better jobs. Never stagnate. I know nurses STILL working the same job over 20 years later! If you feel it’s bad watch “London Hospital”, or read what it’s like right now for Irish nurses. I finally got to the point where I knew that even if I wasn’t appreciated, the patients still needed me.

I was a bedside nurse for 20 years; worked in Stepdown/PCU - really stressful. Got so burned out so I quit. I now work in acute Dialysis.... LOVE IT!

I’m always so amazed when I hear about nurses who have done bedside for SO LONG.

Amen! The truth! The nurses that can do it are amazing! I could never do it for long.

I have just handed in my 4 weeks notice, I can relate to everything you spoke about. I spoke to my best friend who's also a nurse and she said "Well done for choosing you", I then burst into tears on the bus. They were tears of relief and happiness that someone else understood how I was feeling. Thanks for posting this.

i’m in my third year of nursing school and i hate the hospital so much it makes me want to drop out. its so depressing and i cant see myself being ordered around on how to « make people better » but never actually being able to see them get better idk

Thank you for this share, I'm currently in the same boat. I thought being back in the hospital would be better, it just helped me realize that it is not for me. I just feel awful leaving. Do you have any tips on how to break it with your manager?

It's always crazy to me that people refer to hospitals as almost the only option for nurses. I have never had any desire to work in a hospital. I always gravitated towards the other sides of nursing. I'm very much interested in surgical outpatient work as well as beauty nursing in any capacity.

I don’t typically leave comments but I have been a RN for 6 months in an ED holding area and i am terrified to say I am thinking I have made a terrible mistake in pursuing nursing. I am going to move to out patient first chance I get to see if it gets better. I worked in health care for 10 years before becoming a nurse and I should’ve listened when everyone said not to. I mean, nurse friends of mine told me all the time not to do it. I didn’t listen bc I thought i would be different, but here I am, miserable and I havnt even hit a year yet. So sad to speak this out loud but it’s the truth. Congrats on leaving the hospital. I hope to have a similar story instead of joining the marines or something to get me as far from nursing as possible.

I am not a RN yet but I know exactly how you are feeling. I have been a CNA for five years and now that I am in nursing school, going to clinicals, and working in the hospital, the hospital atmosphere is not for me. I am happy that you had the faith to leave and do what is best for you.

That's an interesting way to put it... "hospital atmosphere". I share your sentiment, you are not alone in your feelings about the hospital environment.

It is! I love it! Even though I work 4 days now instead of 3, I feel like I have more time to do life in a balanced way 😊
