Omg so so glad I just discovered you! I am currently in my final year of pharmacy at Monash university too!! Im currently thinking of not doing internship year (because I HATED pharmacy, honestly I'm the grinch of pharmacy and every semester I wanted to get out)...but at the same time, part of me feels like I should go through that one year to just somehow have a part time/locum job in the future (which sounds safe, but also stupid because I've legit studied so hard for a backup). Currently I dont know what else I would do, I just know I want to teach English abroad/travel/work on my youtube channel and then maybe go into commerce (my double degree to :P...HAHA) .. honestly I feel like I'm at a pivotal point in my life, and I feel so lost :( Btw I'm like just nodding to all the points you said :P I relate to you so much girl, if only our paths crossed during uni AHHA!

Hey girl! Thanks for your lovely message! There's nothing to say that you can't side hustle while doing your internship or when you're a Pharmacist! It sounds great to just start doing your own thing but there needs to be an income stream to help you do that first :) All the best and good luck!

I am facing the same problem too. Im in doing a physiotherapy course in NZ simply because I didnt know what to do when I was in high school. I come from an Asian family. I was taught that doing a health related course would bring me a stable life. Now Im 22 and 1 year left to my course completion. Im still thinking of career change. :(

thank you for sharing this, i'm currently thinking of choosing pharmacology (rather than pharmacy) for the university course and my parents are saying to do a double degree with commerce and not science because they want the second degree to be related to commerce in one way or another and also because they think job employment isn't very good for pharmacology (or other sciences; they accept data science though). i talked to my career advisor about this and he suggested the double degree as a way to drop one of the degrees and continue the other. i'm not sure as to whether i like commerce even though my stronger subjects are maths and science and the thing is i've never had any experience in pharmacology (like for work experiences or anything) - i think the only reason why i'm interested is because i like the chemistry practicals at school (lol). (tbh i think they would prefer me to do pharmacy over pharmacology) so yeah, i'm kind of just unsure as to whether choosing pharmacology is a good idea and i think it's also because of the idea that people who work in labs don't get a lot of money too. commerce just doesn't really sound interesting but at this rate i'm beginning to think that anything i choose will be boring so i might as well not take up pharmacology (unless my ATAR yeets itself out of the window and it's the only choice i have left).

Ahhh I have to decide soon about what to do in university and I'm considering pharmacy but I don't know what I wanna do. I mean is it really difficult? Is it a dry subject? I'm from Asia too so my options are kinda limited to bs in medical lab tech, optometrist and pharmacist and I just don't know..

4:00 extremely relateable. Im in second year pharmacy atm, im doing ok and working part time in the pharmacy. Exactly in the same situation, i feel like i just wanna finish it off for the stability as i have no where else to go. Work atm is tolerable but i hope that it will get better.

Thank you for this. I have to choose my subjects for year 11 by the end of the week, and I've chosen chemistry and biology with pharmacy in mind. This is because my mum has encouraged me, like yours, to go to pharmacy or dentistry, and I went along (again like you) because it gave me something to work towards since otherwise I wouldn't know what to do! I've realised that I actually don't enjoy chemistry because of this video, but I'm not sure if I should drop it, as I could use it for a job that isn't pharmacy perhaps but isn't so chemistry-based?

This is such a good question! Yes, people are very supportive and encouraging when they hear you are studying pharmacy - especially because of its reputation. It was hard for my parents to understand why I wanted to make the switch, but my friends were really supportive! I'd love to make a video on this and share with you more then!

Hey, so I'm not from Lisa's year but I also did Pharmacy and I can tell you that pharmacy is not that hard to get into anymore. I got a very high atar and was so worried I would miss out but once I got into pharmacy and realised my classmates had got in with low 90s and some around 89...it showed that you no longer need to get all A+ to get into Pharmacy. They also got rid of the UMAT for pharmacy so you don't even need to worry about that. HOWEVER, it is still super hard to get into Dentistry and Medicine, the gamsat is cruel and if you do well you then need to do an interview which is so subjective and you could lose a spot just because 4 people think you're not suited to a profession. ANYWAYS, think of what you're good at, if it's maths and physics, do engineering, if it's english do arts or law, if its the sciences and specifically chemistry, like if you're owning chemistry, do pharmacy. Stay out of pharmacy if you're getting BY in chem, chem is with you all 4 years of pharmacy and there is no avoiding it, not to mention the chemistry you do in pharmacy is HARD. Unfortunately sometimes dedication isn't enough, if you're not pulling in the grades, you wont be able to get into med/dent, however with dedication and average grades you probably could get into pharmacy or an honours program

Hi! Um..I've been really troubled lately. I'm 17 and I think that I really need to rethink which course I'm going to apply to in the future. I feel so pressured by the people I know who are working hard toward their dreams and here I am still unsure of mine. I've wanted to become a pharmacist because 1) it's a health science course that's not as long as medicine 2) they say it secures a very good pay. I planned to study in Australia since my parents like the environment there. But I'm afraid I may end up not feeling fulfilled if ever I'm going to become a pharmacist. Now, I'm considering nursing since my cousins are nurses/ studying to be a nurse. Listening to them I thought, "that may be a good option as well" but I am so so so not good with people like I have 5% people skills and maybe my the pressure to communicate with people will hinder me from enjoying the job. Is it possible to study for both at the same time? And do nursing and pharmacy have a good pay in Australia? Please help I'm so worried and stressed out 😓😓😟 and Thank you very muchhh

How are you doing now? I have read your comment quite late (4 years later), I think if you don’t like jobs relating to communication but like health science course, maybe medical imaging will be suitable for your wishes

I actually didn't have anyone give me any advice on how to choose my major so I could choose anything and my parents would still be proud. So I chose to go to school for a dual degree in broadcast journalism and sociology but now that I'm working in journalism in a TV station I feel like I should've gone the medical routine. More so for the stability and financial security. I'm always so broke and it's been 2 1/2 years since I graduated college and I still haven't been able to purchase a car. So maybe sometimes its best to go the stable career :(
@vcestudyguidesonline
@vcestudyguidesonline 7 лет назад
I guess the grass is always greener on the other side. Working in a TV station sounds really cool! I've heard journalism is a really tough gig, especially in the beginning, but it's ultimately very rewarding. I've also got many close medical student friends who would love to be doing something else! I hope you find your feet soon :)
@NathalyDove

that's great to hear. I think maybe I have to stick it through. And not rush so hard on trying to change my career. I was listening to a youtube vid by some reporter on she said to think about the first job in news as your masters degree since we don't technically need one in TV news. I think what makes me think about it is all friends went to the medical side and they recently graduated and landed jobs in hospitals earning 30/hr. They say they love their jobs, which i couldn't be for sure if it's the truth or not. But they highly encourage me to keep doing what I'm doing and they always say that at least I'm doing something "different"......while I'm over here working part-time at 12/hr barely enough for essentials.

100k is around the median minus 35% for taxes (give or take) minus 140k in student loans (being somewhat reasonable) 8 years of your life I was heavily considering this career but I am also heavily reconsidering it.

Not in australia, the income is about 50-60k and that's full time, as you get experience your pay increases to max 90k. Unless you have your own business you dont make shit as a pharmacist in Australia. It's also only 4 years, and the cost is covered by the government.
@MANGOZITANGO
@MANGOZITANGO 7 лет назад
+Organie On, yeah unfortunately pharmacy in australia is the least well paid profession for graduates. You get paid $20 an hour and your pay rises to about $28 which is shit...when you think of all the hard content you learn lol

Killswitch1991 the pharmacy market is saturated in the US...they keep opening new schools every year and producing more grads and there are very few good stable jobs that are full time...it's so bad people are taking per diem jobs or driving hours away to rural communities to get their foot in the door. Unless you know some upper level management than can pass your CV around it's very tough to land that first interview from what I hear from some pharmacist friends.
