In this video, I share the biggest lessons I learned from running Reese Hauling and Cleanup, a small junk removal company on the side for the last 15 months.

You made the right call brother. Family is more important than a little extra money

Thanks man. There’s days I miss it to be honest but then I get to do more stuff with my son and I remember that these days will be limited. I can always start another business one day when the kids are grown.

Good call, your kids need you a lot more than the stuff you can buy them with that extra money!

We don't see many videos like this that show the less-sexy side of small business ownership. After a year of owning a business I too have realized this is not what I want. But I don't regret it for a second! I learned things no school could ever teach me.

So true! I’m glad you took your experience like an MBA - it was probably cheaper and more of an education than the “tuition” at a University!

Just had to make a similar choice, myself after a 6 month run. You did the right thing. Sometimes, it is just too hard to make enough extra money to justify the sacrifices that you have to make in order for it to work. Life is meant for living. Live it...!

Well said. It’s not easy to stop doing something “good”, at the expense of something better. But life is full of tough choices! Thanks for sharing your experience.

No matter how young or old we are, time in itself, is a limited resource . I think our collective group of junk haulers , has very different situations . Some have kids, others don’t for example . That in itself changes things . For myself and my guy, we have no kids . The house is paid off with no mortgage . With these two factors , that lets us breathe a little easier . But it’s no excuse to put in the work required to be successful . With your situation , I can see why you made your decision . Time with your children, wife and other family members are important . Then there’s your interests . I like the name of your channel . It reflects what’s important to you . 😊

Well said, Sherry. I couldn’t agree more, we all have our reasons to do or not do something. As long as we live our lives true to our highest values, then we will be authentic and satisfied with the choices made. I’m glad to hear you and your guy have some breathing room to make the business less stressful and more rewarding. 👍🏼 Cheers and thanks for continuing to support my channel :)

How did you do your advertising? What avenues did you use?

Everything you can think of. Telling friends, neighbors, opened a Google Account, Facebook and We site, yard signs, Nextdoor. They all work to some degree.

Dumping a 1/4 full trailer will really cut into your margins. I always aim to have $1,000 of work done in my truck before dumping. If that means having to fill up, dump, and come back on the next job... Ya gotta get the money in there before adding costs to your business. Good luck in your new adventures.

Thanks for the comment and following the journey. You’re right about dumping partial loads. There is a certain amount of inefficient work I did because I did not necessarily have the capacity time wise to line things up the way I wanted.

Having a side hustle is scam. There is no way I am getting a side hustle when I can be playing call of duty.

@jeffreyrobson2740 I rather complain all day and enjoy my life then try to side Hustle for a few pennies a week. Not worth my time. Working hard is stupid. Just get a 9 to 5pm and sit down

@RollingWithRuss yes and you working side Hustle with no big enough reward to one day retire you entire family. What is the point?? If you want extra money find a job that let's you work overtime. Hustle on the side to get rich, NOT to pay bills.

Thank you for your support! As a father yourself - you realize there are only so many rabbits you can chase and successfully catch. I naively thought I could catch more than 1 career, but that was a lesson learned and I have so much respect for those that are self employed full time now.

@@RollingWithRuss my wife and I had another business that we closed about six years ago. We were killing it, but our kids had to take the backseat. We sat down one day and we asked ourselves two questions. One. If we keep going this way, will the kids grow up to resent us because we were always busy or will they grow to resent because we closed the business and could no longer afford the trips, the nanny, the Disney passes, all the extras. We look at each other and said the kids were worth more than the extra money we were making. The next day we close the business and liquidated all of our inventory. That eventually led us here. The kids have their stay at home mom again and I get to go to every soccer game and school event. Don’t close the chapter on entrepreneurship. It may not work right now, with this business, but it may work in the future.
