I love smart phones, but not as a phone. Without it so many aspects of my life would be outright awful. But it should be treated like a computer, not a phone IMO. I do think mobile phones are likely healthy for some people without the smart aspect. But tbh i just wanna use an old mobile phone cause its cute lol.

I like this phone. Because it reminds me on better times, times when you enter the bus or a train and travel with it, you could also talk with people around you. Today the vast majority of people are only looking at their smartphones or they have even headphones in their ears. And then there are people with laptops or tablets, watching movies during traveling. In the nineties and post 2000`s, from time to time you could se someone with a discman and that was it. Modern electronics became so cheap that this Nokia is practically more expensive than chinese smartphone.

Portability does it for me. I simply do not like lugging around a smart phone, especially in the summer when I am wearing shorts all the time. The original smart phones were small and portable, but they gradually got bigger and bigger. I recently got a new flip phone, and I love it. My smart phone has become a small tablet that stays at home most of the time. My friends thought I didn't carry a phone because I wasn't dragging one of those smart phones around. Smart phones get left behind at parties, bars, clubs, and all kinds of other places, which is very unsettling. Anyhow, thanks for sharing, and peace to all of the "dumb phone" users out there.

I've used that same phone for almost a year now, and it's been really great :) However, here in Norway you CAN have two SIM-cards with the same number (or, a twin-SIM, I think they call it), so I've been using that option. That way I've been able to use the Nokia as my daily driver, while still getting all my calls and messages on my smartphone as well, whitout having to switch the SIM card from one phone to another.

I'm sick of Google spying on me. 99% of the world's cell phones are controlled by TWO companies, Apple and Google. That is WAY too much power. Maybe they need to bring back analog. Remember Nextel? And "push to talk" (I liked it). Give me a phone that has just 4 things: calls, texting, a QWERTY keyboard, and maps .

Thank you for sharing. I''m just about to start my dumb phone journey for many of the reasons you listed at the start of you smartphone "detox". I have gone for the Nokia 105 because as cute as the new 3310 is, and I originally had the old 3210 in the late 90's and 3310 in the early 2000's, the new version does come with a camera and I'm told email capabilities in the UK. As I want to go totally dumb with the phone I decided to not go there especially as I'm always taking photo's. The whole living experiences through the phone camera lense instead of enjoying the moment is one of the reasons I wanted the super dumb phone. What you've explained about your experience is super helpful and it is intresting to see that you have gone back to a smart phone but with more self control. At the moment I'm looking at it from making it a permanent change as I too have poor self control but I'm going to keep an open mind. The withdrawal symptoms you mentioned are useful to know as well. It is going to be a massive change.

My solution is to have a tablet AND my dumb phone. On the tablet I have all my messengers and group chats, and my dumb phone has my SIM card. The messengers on my tablet still function with my number, they send me a code to my phone to make sure I´m the same person... but it works (whatsapp and telegram). Everyone knows that for emergencies they need to call or send a text. So when I´m on the go I just have my dumb phone, and at home I also have my tablet. Though I have to make the concious decision to leave it out of the bedroom and so on... I enjoy not having to reply to every notification or message right away, plus I can concentrate better when I´m at work or with frinds/family.

So I'm doing this now. At 38, I lived through the dumbphone era into smartphone era and can easily compare the two. I still have my ORIGINAL Nokia 3310 from 2001. Got a new battery and guess what? It works!! It's in perfect condition too. So I'm using it. My difficulty is that I used apps on the smartphone (such as banking.) My approach is this. I still have the smartphone but it stays switched off. I turn it on for using the domestic apps when I need to. I essence, it's become a hand held laptop that only gets used on WIFI. My smartphone addiction was the incessant scrolling on Facebook etc just because it was there and available. I didn't need to make any effort to pick up the smartphone but it makes me sick to think of the amount of time I've wasted on it. My little boy is 3 and I don't want to miss him playing and growing up. I need a way of not giving into this! Thank you for this video, I'm so glad there's others out there who recognise and appreciate the struggle. One of the issues is everyone else uses a smartphone, organisations expect you to use a smartphone and the world is becoming smartphone-centric. On one hand I don't want to look like someone who's constantly going against the grain, but at the same time I want my life back! I'm beyond worrying what the world thinks now. I'll choose the latter.

I have been trying to get rid of my smartphone for awhile. I found out Blackberry Q10 is the best choice for me. It has everything we basically need, but not too smart because it doesn't support many apps. It is small, has good camera, good speaker, good call quality, full qwerty keyboard, And I can use online messaging apps like telegram, Whatsapp, and messenger for communication, and it is a 4g phone, works like a charm as an internet hotspot. The only one problem is, it can't use Google service apps like Google note etc. Overall such a great phone to downgrade from a Smartphone. But if you need something lighter Q5 is also a good choice, except the camera is a bit poor.

Have you considered the options regarding forwarding phone calls? I have a smart phone and a dumb phone set up so that I get all my calls to my dumb phone when the smart phone is unreachable (turned off) which means that the people who want to reach me can always call the number I have on my smart phone. Of course forwarding doesn't work for the messages which might be a bigger issue for some. For me though this works. I still check my smart phone daily for the messages but still this method enables me to get at least those off-hours or off-days without a hassle when I feel like I need it.

This is going to be interesting. Hoping to get more of my life back.

I use two phones with two SIM cards - a smartphone and an old phone. I carry a smartphone on business trips, when traveling to a new city, or meeting people. I use an old phone when in nature, at the beach, hiking, walking my dog, going shopping, and doing familiar things in familiar places. I carry one or another on events, depending on whether I plan to take photos that night/day or not. It's not a drastic change, but it is a change and it feels right.

Thanks for your video!! Loved hearing your experience! By the way, what you say at the end of your video, that’s what I exactly did! Here where I live in Belgium there’s an option to have 2 SIM cards with exactly the same phone number, it’s a new feature that’s been implemented not long ago, I would check out if that now exists in the US if I was you! PS: I have a question about the Nokia 3310, does the ear speaker work well with yours? Can you hear the person who’s talking to you well enough? Cause I use a very old Nokia which is from the same era as the original 3310, but the ear speaker is so bad I can barely hear people talking when I’m calling them outside, with the wind & traffic noises etc, so I’m considering buying a modern version of the 3310 hoping that solves this problem. Thanks!

I've been using my Nokia most of the time for 2 years. You can't get an Uber with a basic phone. My smartphone is the JellyPro. It's quite small and easily doubles as an MP3 or audiobook player for road trips, or just driving around town.

I’m really thinking about a Nokia 106, especially after all the big techs have decided that parler was a “threat” to the public.

Good video. I’m obsessed with smartphones and bought the Nokia 8110 banana phone. Intended to do what you did but lasted 1/2 a day as found text messaging way too fiddly. Smartphones aren’t doing my mental health any good and need to find other things to do like read books and actually telephone people. Seriously thinking about giving it another go and only using my smartphone sparingly for stuff the dumb phone can’t do (calendar and daily journal logs) well it’s on charge... will I swap???

Hey - persevere with the fiddly texting. If you're not familiar with it you soon will be. I can type just as fast on an old dumbphone compared to a smartphone keyboard.

While I am a bit older than most here, I have had smartphones for just 10 years and I had dumbphones for over 16 years before that. I ordered a 4G flip phone last night and will change over to that dumbphone when I receive it in a few days. I don't group text, but do text some.....so that will be the only issue with that dumbphone. Great video!

I never wanted to admit it, but dumbing down your smartphone is so much better than using a dumbphone IMO. You can always set up apps like Stay Focused which helps make life a lot easier. The convenience of a smartphone without the inconvenience of not having one.

My first mobile phone was in 1999 when I was 17. A Motorola Manhattan on the Orange network. Text messages were 50p!! My first real smartphone was an iPhone 3GS in 2009. At the time I was overawed by it. My last iPhone was an iPhone 6, and my last smartphone was a Razer 2. It will be kept as a tablet device when going on holiday to access anything we need on the web. Otherwise will stay in a box. My new 'dumb' phone is like going back to the early 2000's again. A Nokia 8110 4G. I do not plan on using any of the social media apps on it. Merely for calls and text. Job done!

Do you not have wifi at home? Because I’d just use the laptop/tablet at home for stuff like group chat

Three years later, and they still don't have two sim card service for both phones, that I know of. Please correct me if I am wrong. I am hoping for dual service on the same number too. Thanks again.

I would love to do like you but I would miss 2 things so much: Spotify and Waze (GPS). How do you find alternatives to music and navigation?
@leemanwrong
@leemanwrong 2 года назад
Yeh i've been searching for a basic phone like that, all you really need is a basic phone that has a web browser that supports the web versions of waze and spotify. Unfortunately thats hard to figure out which phone can do that unless you can actually test each phone.

paper map. listen to your music on a music device (cd player, tape player, record player...). You'd be surprised at how quickly you realize that stuff on those devices is just not everything.

I love this. I am looking for a dumb phone. I am curious , you referred to your phone as "tiny little smart phone." Is it a smart phone then? I really just want a basic phone. Thanks for sharing this experience

I want to do this; but I believe when I'd tried in the past, swapping the sim back and forth was not effective. AT&T wanted me to completely change my plan to use a non-iPhone. Has anybody else had this same experience?

I use a Nokia 105, witch is better than any phones, without a cam or 3g or 4g and I live normally. No FB, no Twitter no Instagram... Honestly, what a life without all that shit on the Web. Live your life and speak withnother people! Get a real friend!

I started to quit social media yesterday. Yes, it's still quarantine and I still need my smartphone. But I only use it for reading and watching. I'm 19 and I also want to switch to a flip phone. I realized this when I have an unbearable headache. I use social media for almost 8 years, and I think it's time to stop now. I decided to use social media when it comes to school, cause that was my teacher posted an announcement, etc. But nothing much. It's hard to adjust for now cause there's still a covid and cant go outside, but I think its for the better. I dont want to waste my 20s on crap anymore. I dont need to compare myself anymore, and start to focus to myself more.

I worked as an asistent videoe editor, camera assistant and was so stressed out and tred that in my free time I aso just usd my computer or phone which ment I spent months of my life basically my lif ebeing on my screen. I actually had burnout symptoms even though im young but I also grew up distracting myself from my life with screens so now im rethinking my whole life. Its like the entire life I had between 13 and now is like a huge blur and I develeoped. I feel like a victim for real. Thats why i need a change now. I managed to switch to a job where its less csreen time but recently I developed a huge aversion towards media in gneral and its kinda rough because the apprenticeship im doing rightnow is that of a mediadesigner for video and sound, I just hope to minimize all the idstrcations and bulshit from my life or even make huge changes

You might want to consider porting your number to google voice. That way you can forward calls to both devices are once
