Why I really chose a Honda Passport (Pilot, Ridgeline) as my overland rig

4-19-22: I've realized that because of the content I've been releasing lately, some people might actually think that I bought a Honda Passport to primarily go off-road. In many video's I make it's crystal clear that an AWD Honda Passport is not the same thing as a 4WD with a T case and 4 LO, nor does it have the extra flex from a solid rear axle. However, iVTM4 equipped Hondas have shown to be in this "missing link" class of vehicle. Similar to the Jeep Compass/Renegade Trailhawk crossovers, which have a 4 LO button (it's just 1st gear in a midsized Honda), these vehicles prove time and time again to be in a class all by themselves in the AWD segment. They are obviously less capable than a true 4WD, but still handle great on-road. After all, they're biased for on-road.
So, the real reason I purchased my 2019 Honda Passport is because I wanted to get the "best of both worlds", I NEVER wanted to primarily go off-roading. If you drive a body on frame vehicle like a Toyota 4runner or Jeep Wrangler and (like most people) never go off-road, then a Passport is right for you. If you drive a Subaru and what more dependability and capability, then the Passport is right for you. But let's say, you haven't owned any of these vehicles and don't know what to go with, then you really need to give it some thought! The Passport will literally sit IN BETWEEN a body on frame 4WD and an AWD Subaru. The Passport is quick! Car and driver and Motortrend recorded 0-60 mph in 5.8 and 6.3 seconds, it's quicker than both a 4runner and Subaru Outback Wilderness. It has Power and brake based torque vectoring, which makes this fatty of a vehicle surprisingly agile by over spinning the outside rear wheel to help with rotation. I think I enjoy that feature too much because I'm only getting 35K - 40K miles out of my tires. Off-road, the torque vectoring helps to... it's able to vector left and right 50/50 to try to mimic a locker (real lockers lock in rotation, not torque though). This means less wheel slip and more capability when you are on the trails.
This 2 night / 2 day trip ski trip to the Eastern Sierras was the perfect example to show off the other side of what I do.
I hope you enjoy this episode. I was pleased to capture all this beautiful video footage (which was just 2 days ago). This type of vehicle can really open up a WHOLE NEW WORLD FOR YOU.

Awesome video. I too am not interested in a rock crawling, nothing wrong with it but I really think you need a dedicated vehicle for it. I have a Tacoma that I overland and camp out of. No lift yet but 4WD and off road tires and wheels (larger than stock). I just want to get places cars can't go so I am slowly improving things like a roof rack and waterproof bed cover. Rock rails are next and some armor. 2K for a 2 inch lift kit is going to take a while but it will come in good time. Peace.

Time is coming up to replace my beloved subaru outback and I've been agonizing over the decision to continue with an AWD crossover that's better suited to daily driving and highway miles which, while less sexy, really are the majority use for the vehicle, or a true 4x4. My use case is very similar to yours, I have limited interest in offroading for sake of offroading itself, but I do travel dirt frequently to access trailheads and remote campsites and need a vehicle that is a highly capable soft roader, at least. I'd largely settled on the pilot trailsport as my next vehicle (and also large enough to build inside rather than using a RTT), and this video really cemented that I'm making the right decision. I think the trailsports are perfect in-between vehicles that covers a lot of bases at once

Jon, I have been enjoying your videos back on the east coast and wishing that I had access to just some of the very cool places that you visit. You have really done a great job tricking out your rig and it looks excellent. Some day I would like to join you on one of your group trips but I'm running a stock gen 4 Explorer which takes me on dirt roads and minor trails but doesn't have the lift or skid plate protection for some of your trips. It's great for moderate camping and maybe its time to make it a project truck but I do like the idea of run what you brung! Keep up the great videos.

Thanks for all then support Steve 🙏. I’d be honored to show an East Coaster around the west, heck, I’ll even come out as far as Utah or Colorado, maybe Wyoming (I’ve been meaning to go back). Just let me know when you head over. As far as the explorer, I think any model is more than capable of being able to handling overlanding terrain, even the newer ones that are unibody. Yours is still a truck, so that should be more than adequate.

Currently with a CRV and camping at campgrounds with my two young boys. I would consider a passport but I eventually want to get a 23 zero72" walkabout and get into some disperse camping. So I'll probably get a Nissan frontier 6ft bed. If it was just me I would'definitely build a platform in the passport. I doubt mind sub optimal fuel mileage. I'm lucky that I only have to commute 3x a week for only 13 miles round trip.

In 2019, when I bought the Passport, I actually set out to buy a Tacoma as my first vehicle choice, but it’s too small, I couldn’t fit in one. The Frontier is roomier and has a 9 speed transmission. If the Frontier was around, I might have chose that as well and I’d probably want some kind of light weight pop up camper. Check this company out: instagram.com/harkeroutdoors?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Thanks Charley! I'm not too familiar with the land marks around the area, this would be 10 miles to the East of the Mammoth Ski resort. There's 2 models of the CVT, the TR580 has a less problematic track record and is found in base model Subarus with the 2.0 and 2.5 FB engines. The TR690HT found in the turbo subarus seems to be a bit deadly X.x. There's many companies that make skid plates for Subarus now, but "Primitive Racing" has been making them forever and is a very trusted brand within the community.

Why not Jeep Grand Cherokee? That is the only American car I've experienced in my life. My brother in law used to own one. It was 2012 G.C. Loredo. It was the first SUV experience in my life. It's to wide for Japanese roads and carparks, but I enjoyed it. I'm too small for the seats but the car was great. The AWD on GCherokeey Tralhawk is very capable, but I don't know the other downsides. I'm curious about your opinion.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 2 года назад
Grand Cherokees are great, but here in the USA there's a stigma about poor reliability. I personally feel that a vehicle that is designed for the task of driving on off-terrain, should last longer than a vehicle that was designed for on-road terrain but modified for off-road. The older Jeep Grand Cherokees with solid axles are very very capable, but the WK2 and the brand new WL are on full independent suspension. The base model 4WD Grand Cherokee is actually less capable than a Honda Passport, but the Trailhawk and trims optioned with the low gear transfer case are well beyond the capabilities. Yeah.... I guess that's why I didn't consider one. When my Subaru died, I only wanted to buy a Toyota or Honda. 101K miles (162 km) and the Honda has been very very reliable, I just had one issue with the transfer case, but it's clear that I need to change the fluid more often (because of my extreme use case).

I purchased the 2019 Honda Passport EX-L AWD. Whatever model you choose, I highly recommend the ZF9 over the Honda 6 speed automatic. There's just more capability, performance and it doesn't overheat. If you choose the Ridgeline, look for model year 2020+. btw, All the Passports automatically come with the ZF9. These two vehicles are pretty much the same except the ridgeline has a wheel base of 125" vs. the 111" in the Passport/Pilot. The Ridgeline has beefier suspension parts. The Passport has almost an inch more of ground clearance. In the near future I'll be releasing a video where My Passport and a 2021 Ridgeline drive up to the 13,114 foot Imogene Pass in Colorado. We both have the Traxda 3.5" lift kit though.

I'm sure you probably mentioned this in one of your videos b4, but what's the difference in non-paved/rougher road (didn't want to use off-road) capabilities if you don't disconnect the rear sway bar?
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 2 года назад
There's more wheel articulation, so less of a chance for a tire to get up in the air. It's helped with not feeling like I'm going to tip over at slower speeds. For hi-speed driving, there's more understeer and it can feel a little boaty, but the IMO, the Passport wasn't that agile to begin with. I tried disconnected the front sway bar and immediately regretted it, so it's reconnected.

@@JonDZ_Adventuring With the front sway bars removed would stiffer springs have helped with keeping the car more stable at higher speeds as well at cornering?
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 2 года назад
@@mandingo9471 I need to do a video on modifications I “regret”. So I didn’t completely remove the front sway bar. I disconnected it on one side. It clanked around, but it also seemed to “bind” up the axle, which I’m assuming is from too much flex. It appeared that the axle was at too severe of an angle. I’d get torque converter stall until I’d rev the engine higher, at which point there was a large surge in power and a loud launch. It sounded destructive. Stiffer springs would help the onroad handling with a disconnected front sway bar, but a disconnect front sway bar GIMPS the Passport and robs it of its strength, which is being one of the few AWDs that can crawl through obstacles. I learned that the way you drive something like a Subaru, or other AWDs with disconnected sway bars, is to use momentum and use the extra flex to help “SEND IT” through an obstacle. In that application you only hit the gas when the axles are leveled. That’s not how you drive a Passport 😃

Why did you change? Is there an inherent benefit to opening to the driver's side as opposed to the passenger for you? Curious because I ordered one from Dirt Complex two weeks ago and I am very excited for it to arrive. (I only purchased it because of your review of it by the way). The one I ordered is passenger opening. :)

Thanks James! I've been running the @dirtcomplex left side "trail swing" (driver side) for 8 months now. There were a couple of reasons why. So #1, because I have a 55 lb. awning on my passenger side roof, Combined with the right side "trail swing" and spare tire (and accessories) putting some of the 165 lbs of weight on that side, there was noticeable difference in how much sag there was to the right, and I could tell that the weight was unbalanced when driving. I also carried my heavier tools on the passenger side cargo compartment. #2 is because my awning opened to the passenger side and the tire carrier would get in my way. Now that I have the left swing, it's just a much nicer place to be. You'll notice that my roof top tent is slightly offset to the driver side. I thought it was a good idea to help balance out the weight distribution.

@@JonDZ_Adventuring All of that weight distribution logic makes perfect sense! Thank you for explaining. Good tips to keep in mind if someone were to try to run the same type of rooftop tent or load their cargo area the same as you are doing. :)

@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 2 года назад
This was with 100 Mph gale force winds, that's why all the big rigs were pulled over. They were prohibited from driving down the highway. My FJ Cruiser would probably get 9 mpg through this. I can get up to 24 mpg highway, but not on California gas.

@JonDZ_Adventuring

No, purely to level the car so I don't slide around in my roof top tent. I also have a set of "gotreads" to help me level out the ride when I don't have rocks around.

What makes the Passport better than the Pilot? Thanks in advance.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 2 года назад
They’re pretty much the same. The Passport has 0.8” more minimum ground clearance, but it seems that once you lift them 3.5 inches, they’re all at around the same height. I have no idea why that is. Maybe mine is just weighed down so much. Also, the Passport has a 6.5” shorter butt, so there’s a better departure angle. I think if you just trim the rear bumper of the Pilot and lift it, it’s basically the same vehicle except it’s longer and sits 7 people

John, get a new Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. 🙂I'm considering that. Or better yet, a Rivian R1S. 🙂
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 2 года назад
So the 4xE’s can get considerably worse highway MPG than their 3.6 V6 counter parts because it’s basically a 2.0 turbo once the electric runs out. In strong winds, where my Passport gets 17 mpg, the 4xE would get around 9-11 mpg. So everyone should be very careful when considering the 4xE.

The point of this video was to show that “I didn’t buy a Honda Passport to primarily go off-road”. But If I wanted to drive up to the 13,114 foot imogene pass, it’ll do it without too much fuss. I use to drive an FJ cruiser. Which is more capable than both those vehicles you mentioned. But it did not meet my requirements for onroad handling and efficiency. My guess is that it probably handled better than the patriot and rodeo.
