Too many people spend money that they don't have, in order to buy things they don't need, in the hopes of impressing people they don't like.

Take my advice, after owning 52 cars in 26 years, cars are a terrible waste of money. Things that go down in value or that you sell for less money than you paid for them are NOT an investment. I used to have a 24 watch collection with no watch under $10,000 and I got rid of all of them as well. That $250,000+ can be used for so many other better purposes. Ironically, my favorite watch is an old JDM titanium Seiko Chronograph. I lost it once on vacation and it took me almost a year to find another one in Japan. The watch only cost me $150. The 52 cars cost me over $2.5M over the last 20+ years and lost $1M in the process. I lost more than $100,000 owning my watches. Take my advice, buy a good Japanese or German car, preferably used so that someone else takes the big hit in depreciation. I have owned cars worth more than $250,000 and now I look for used cars 2-3 years old that are about $50,000. I agree with Mr. Anthony on buying a watch you like that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I try not to spend more than $500 for a nice watch, even a Swiss Watch like Tissot, rather than $10,000 watches like my Rolex watches.

shingnosis - I have about 20 Citizen Eco Drive in my collection and they are the most reliable watches ever with "zero" cost of maintenance even after 15 years. No expensive movement that cost $500 like Rolex, no battery change ever, no auto wonder needed, no electrical charging. My oldest Citizen is 15 years old and I haven't opened the case back yet, the Perpetual Calendar is always correct regardless of short months, long months and leap years. The accuracy is within +5 seconds/month (Rolex is +5 seconds/Day). Exposing the dial keeps the Citizen running forever. Cost of maintenance is zero.

Bottom line, a Rolex is one of the very few watches that (1) you can own for a lifetime and it will always be in style and (2) if you buy it right, you can sell if for more than you paid in several years. Rolexs go up in value not down. I work hard, I make great money and I don't buy shit watches.

Back in the eighties I owned about 10 different rolex watches. Non of which kept any better time than my 200 dollar Seiko. On one , the hour hand fell off after one month of use. A submariner I had purchased the back had been cross threaded, and leaked the first time I wore it swimming. Keep in mind these were all less than a year old before breaking down. Rolex is nothing but shit!! I have owned dozens of seikos over the last 50 years, and they just cannot be beat. You will get tired of wearing the same old watch long before it ever needs servicing. My very first adult watch I owned was a Seiko 5 my dad brought back from one of his tours in Vietnam. I was 10 years old and the envy of everyone !! At that time Seiko was not yet sold in the U.S. Only military and dependents ever had one. You just cannot beat a Seiko. PERIOD !!

+STEVE ENGLISH wow, are you serious? I have heard people claim how their rolexes can probly survive a nuclear explosion (metaphorically).. and I thought that is why they are so popular & so fuckin expensive - coz they are the most reliable, and nobody can beat them in quality..

+whatever04 they are expensive because the name, the fact that famous people wear them, and because they are made out of things like solid gold and diamonds. Oh and plus because it's "swiss made". Listen you can trust a Japanese watch because believe it or not Japanese people are known for taking pride in the timepieces they wear. In Japan it is a must for a man to try and buy the most exclusive and expensive watch possible. So yeah the Japanese should know I thing or two about good watches.
@Schmoburger
@Schmoburger 7 лет назад
i have a Seiko 6139-7002 made in 1974 and it still works great after 42 years, so I would say the Japanese certainly do know how to make a sturdy watch. Seiko make accurate, sturdy movements that are every bit as high quality as any Swiss piece, and styling that is every bit as appealing. in fact i'd say some of the best looking wathes have come from the Seiko factory imho.

Finally someone telling the true experience about owning Swiss made luxury watches. I ended up buying a Quartz movement Seiko Astron GPS. I do find Rolex yacht master 226611 a beautiful watch but at 12K and a thousand dollars per service this is no longer a good investment nor a joy to own.
@lamadoo

@Sergei__v
@Sergei__v 8 лет назад
I understand. I don't buy things for resale and invest my money in business. A Rolex won't generate a profit significant enough to spend 12K. So I don't treat these type of watches as investment. I do enjoy my Astron in the mean time. 12K is directed into other enjoyable aspects of my life that also bring money into my account. If you can spend 12 grand on a watch for pleasure, kudos to you!

Knight Udayan Yes, you are right. There are collector items, limited supply from release - like Hamilton Pan Europ Chrono with a Blue Dial. They made 1971 of these and you can only buy them from collectors. Original Price 1900 and now some sell for $5100
@jaime4022
@jaime4022 8 лет назад
+Sergei Zhukov Sergei, Let me be the first one to call B.S. on this Hamilton Pan Europ Chrono "affair." These Pan Europ watches are not worth, neither do they command 5,100.00; much less is there a market for them at that money. You might perhaps have seen someone selling one for that amount, but that in no way means that these watches are serious collector items, or that they are even worth anything in that vicinity. They are not! They are just another mundane limited edition of a common retro-inspired watch.

You are spot on! I've loved Seikos since I first laid eyes on them in the 70s. I've just purchased an SNZG15J1 and it looks great, just like Classic Flieger, the build is gorgeous, a display window on the back and it's only gained 1 second in 24 hours! I bought a thick black leather strap and it looks a million dollars! I have a black steel Solar 200metres diver and that keeps almost atomic accuracy time....and the lume on pretty much all Seikos is truly brilliant. Many thanks for the superb and very honest review.

+Soufiane CHOUAF What I think is there is a point where you're so successful you don't care that they think its a 20 dollar watch. To me, Rolexes are for ppl who haven't quite made it all the way. They may be millionaires, but they're not wealthy. I would almost call this "hood rich". The wealthy drive Maybachs, rolls royce, wear patek phillip and APs and own 40 million dollar mansions and then there's the people who drive the an expensive Mercedes, wear Rolex and own maybe 1 million dollar 5k square foot house that's not quite a mansion but in a good area of town. The rich but not wealthy folks love getting attention, like the kind you get with a rolex, while the wealthy actually don't care or don't want ppl to know how much money they have or what their timepiece is worth.
@NobuWatts
@NobuWatts 8 лет назад
sheffieldmvp Makes sense. That's why the hood rich end up getting robbed because they parade around town like "Oooh look at me I have so much money." Bragging about all their success and expensive things. Where as someone who is truly wealthy KNOWS they are wealthy and that it won't change so they have nothing to prove to others or themselves. That's the kind of wealth that lasts. Not people that may have a couple million dollars but then they end up wasting all of it showing off and are broke again because they're not very intelligent and didn't have the proper financial structure or investments. They got into a large sum of money from inheritance, or maybe a small lotto winning, etc then it's gone. Of course all people are different I've seen guys who have quite a bit of money and could easily afford a Rolex or even an AP and they do have a simple 2 or $300 watch. And some may spend 6 figures on a watch simply because they like it and know that it won't hurt their budget.

+Christian Sahlen In terms of the overall, Rolex has the benefit of superior quality, but they certainly not in the first tier. They are actually mid-tier in terms of quality and prestige for collectors and enthusiasts. Over 1 million are produced each year while top house make only 10K-20K +/-. Rolex parts are mass produced with little hand finishing, only assembly, and that has a great deal to do with their perception by collectors. Rolex of all the firms expended a huge sum in creating a name for itself by a well-executed publicity campaign over decades. The top makes are far more discreet.

The answer to your tirade is a simple one... you can't buy class or taste. There are rich entrepreneurs who wear timex. They have a minimalistic mindset. As for "his royal highness" I can only assume you are referring to someone outside of the states, probably in the UK. That's not really royalty... its just silly grandiose titles put on what we in the states would simply call a politician.

Interesting point of view. My father was an Air Force pilot. Rolex was the standard at the time (pre quartz) because of their accuracy. Suddenly, the Rolexes started to disappear and were replaced Seikos. Seiko became the watch to have. They were super accurate, super water resistant, and reasonably priced. Seikos weren't easy to find at the time, so the guys stationed in or flying to Japan would often snag Seikos for their stateside pals. Dad was very happy with his and it was his last watch. He never had a reason to buy anything else.

Once upon a time there was gold rain. Everyone wanted to grab as much as they could as gold had immense value due to scarcity. But the rain never stopped. It rained gold for the whole week and everybody had so much gold that nobody was ready to buy it. People had to throw away all the gold. This is how these luxury watches work. They're sold expensive and hence are scarce in society. Everyone wants a rolex even though it may not be one of the most accurate watches our there. Grand seiko is a perfect example of one of the best watches ever created worth its price tag. But half of the world hasn't heard of it as it comes from a brand which makes mass consumer watches too. Human mind is easy to manipulate.

The reason i sold my Rolex watches, was because i had purchased three of them over thirty years ago, when they were relatively affordable. One of them was an early 1983 Explorer 1655 Orange Hand with straight second hand. Back in 1982 i had paid £542 new for the watch, and kept all boxes and paperwork, i sold it for £16000, due to its condition and rarity. I also had a pair of early 1970s Submariners and a nice GMT Master. Gone are the days when a Rolex was affordable, you will never reap the rewards of buying a watch today, and selling them for such a huge profit.

@243wayne1
@243wayne1 8 лет назад
+Gary Smith Exaaaaaaaaaaaaactly...
@nickv4073
@nickv4073 8 лет назад
+Gary Smith They are as delicate as any other decent watch. They also tell time just like any other watch. The difference is the cost for something that does the same thing as a $10 Casio and the fact that you have to pay outrageous prices just to get them serviced every 5 years even if they don't break. If you don't get a Rolex serviced, then the resale value drops in kind. You see the first watch in this guys video? Its a $100 Japanese Orient automatic that will run for 20 years easy without servicing. If it ever stops working, you can toss it and buy another for $100.
@BrawndoQC
@BrawndoQC 8 лет назад
+Nick V Not that argument again.. You think people buying 10K watches don't know that the time is available on their phone or a $10 Casio? Also, a 1990 well maintained Honda Accord can get you from point A to B like a $100K Porsche, it's just not as fun. And now they aren't delicate. I've done Sailing races with mine and banged the hell out of it on masts, stays and winches. I've had other watches break for much less than that.
@nickv4073
@nickv4073 8 лет назад
+Brawndo Great! I'm sure all that banging has helped retain the value of your watch tremendously. I have banged around my daily beater cheap Invicta Pro Diver plenty working on my cars and DIY projects its still running fine after 10 years and if it does ever break, I'll toss it and buy another without a second thought. Your point is what? Secondly, what in the world is "fun" about a watch? Yes, a Porsche is fun to drive. You can't drive a Rolex but they do share a high maintenance cost. lol!!
@BrawndoQC
@BrawndoQC 8 лет назад
Nick V I don't buy watches to retain their value or resell them. I buy them for me and they will go down the grave with me. If it's not your hobby and you aren't an horology enthusiast, that's fine, but an Invicta, really? I would rather wear a pink mickey mouse kid watch.

Interesting video... Having lived in Switzerland, I understand the culture and watch industry with a rather unique perspective. I've been a watch enthusiast before I was a teenager. For a man, a watch is the only personal possession he can own over his entire lifetime that he can use and appreciate everyday. Cars, houses, etc. all come and go but a fine quality watch remains his constant companion. I have found that my relationship with my favorite watch has significantly grown over time. I've worn the same piece for over 25 years, and I actually keep a spare. It has become my trademark as it never leaves my side. A watch is not a mere timepiece, as any cell phone can tell you the time. A fine watch communicates success and achievement which no good suit of clothes or shoes can. This is very important in the world of business where first impressions are critical. First impressions set the stage for all future interactions, and for that reason are very important. You never have a second chance to make another first impression. People who are high achievers typically share several attributes and characteristics, and yes snap judgments can be made depending on the watch a man wears. One of the most powerful watches is a Patek Philippe Calatrava; thin, plain, white face with Roman numerals and yellow gold featuring a leather strap. Jack Welch, the former CEO of General Electric always wears his with pride. It is featured on the cover of his bestselling book. That simple understated watch communicates volumes; it says excellence, taste, pride and it quietly screams power! In my view, no Rolex, regardless of price, can even come close to projecting what the simple Patek does, and that is one argument for only buying the best. Sure, Rolex is reputed for being rugged, but it can never communicate elegance. As EVP for an international airline, I often bought, sold and leased commercial aircraft for our airline. I would never wear anything other than a fine Swiss watch to discussions or negotiations. Sorry, a Rolex wouldn't make the grade at that level, and anyone wearing a Seiko would in all respects wouldn't be taken seriously. Associates have often made the same observation. As a group, we all wear fine watches and never use a plastic pen to sign contracts. Bottom line: Find the right watch you will love to keep for a lifetime. Buy it, enjoy it, and forget the money. Buy the best, take care of it, and it will help bring you not only pleasure, but lasting pride and joy. Make first impressions count. Buy the right watch and that is undoubtedly Swiss.

+Alex P Lovely thoughts, I highly regard Patek the Calatrava is an exquisite watch I own a 3970 J a more complicated piece I have owned for several years. Sometimes I wear it at business functions, sometimes it is overpowering and not in good taste. The most important skills in my experience for being successful in business are integrity (long term), knowledge of your field, presentation skills, captivating your audience and commanding a presence. Ultimately a timepiece is an accessory, and accessories unto themselves do not buy class, exclusivity, prestige or command presence. In this age of due diligence opinions are formed prior to business meetings, I know a few and have met many more individuals of significant power who could buy a dozen grand master chimes without flinching or affecting their lifestyle in the least, yet are not interested in watches at all. Yes I know the GMC is an extremely limited production piece and sold by invitation only. Many younger business people drive exotic cars, wear an apple watch, sneakers, jeans and carry an ipad this is the reality of business today. As an aside I do agree, while Rolex is an extremely rugged timepiece, and extremely accurate for a mechanical it is mass produced (1 M watches /yr), it may impress on the wrist of a car salesman or real estate agent, but it is meaningless in significant business circles.

Enjoyed listening to your commentary. My daily watch is a ceramic Seamster Pro but the gem of my collection is a Grand Seiko quartz. It is absolutely exquisite and no one has any idea what a GS is. Seiko makes the best watches in the world. Even still, I'm on the lookout for an SEL 16570 because I think I owe it to myself as a watch buff to find out what the Rolex fuss is all about!

My first real adult watch was a dress Seiko watch, it was very thin but not as thin as their upper level. My classmates noticed it and my High School teacher showed his. Mine was just a few mm thicker. Wore it all through College. Could say it had sentimental value to me.

I'm with you! I have a Breitling Aerospace, Longines dress watch, Omega Seamaster 200m (pre-Bond) and Fortis Flieger as well as a couple of fashion watches from Fossil - but am irritated by the pending service costs of the Omega ($900!) I have just gone to Seiko SKX007K2 and SNZF17J1 and am blown away by the finish and performance. I have my eyes on a Seiko or Orient dress watch (or both!) :-) All the best and thanks for making this video! BTW I am also Swiss, living in Switzerland. Rob

With any consumer product that costs more than average it is best to buy something that at least holds value over time. Forget about making a profit.I've been wearing a Gold Rolex Day Date with the President bracelet for 30 years and no problems whatever. Only serviced it twice over that period.Bought for £3000 and now saleable at £6000 to £8000 so it has kept value in real terms.So, a nice piece of masculine jewellery used daily for three decades with almost a zero net cost if sold today.That is why one chooses Rolex or Patek Phillipe.

I agree with you, I love Seiko, I have 5 seiko watches and each time I was going to buy a new one, I would go to a shop and look at swiss watches because I thought I would change for once, but I ended up always getting another seiko. There is something about seiko's that I find valuable and authentic, you know they are good, simple, and that as you rightly said: you get value for money, I have read many people saying that you need to pay a lot more to get the equivalent quality in swiss watches, I also do find swiss watches very beautiful, but for the most part I find them too flashy, whereas the exclusivity of seiko I find is its simplicity and yet, its quality. If I did have money to buy a rolex, I think I would go for a Grand Seiko.

I found your channel on your Datejust review. Now I'm going through the same process. Just selling off my Rolexes. I had the Explorer and No Date sub for nearly two years and got to enjoy them a lot but now time to move them on , put the money back in bank and enjoy other things in life. I just got a Tudor BB36 as a nice watch and its less than half what I paid for the Explorer 114270 but honestly feels like the better watch. I bought a couple seiko divers too. Since I have the Tudor not completely going to a collection of cheapies. I sold my Explorer II Polar early this year and loved that watch when I had it but no regrets selling it. I hope I don't regret selling the Explorer and Submariner but they will be easy to get again If I miss them. I sold a Speedy pro and Navitimer, and Datejust as well in the past year and half and no regrets on any of them. Its easy to get carried away in the watch collecting hobby with youtube and the forums and then one day you realize how much cash you have tied up in your collection. I realized it and thought I can do more with that cash. I enjoy having nice things too which is why I'm keeping the Black Bay 36 but I don't feel like having $30k or more tied up in my collection.

Very good points. My first Rolex was a GMT Master. I loved the watch but it started to keep really terrible time. I started to question why I was wearing such an expensive watch when I had young kids and was actually a bit embarrassed to wear it so I sold it. The watch is worth a lot more now than I sold it for so I regret it now. I also used to own an Omega Speedy Pro. It started to make funny noises and the registers wouldn't set back to 12 anymore. It was super expensive to fix so I sold that one too. It's also worth a hell of a lot more than I sold it for so I also regret selling that one. I own a Rolex Datejust and an AirKing now. Now that the novelty of them has worn off I get as much pleasure out of wearing one of my Seikos. I doubt that I will ever buy another expensive watch. I would rather buy four or five cool Seikos than one Rolex. Honestly, I don't think any watch is worth $5000 unless it's got a gold case etc. I still lpve watches but rather than drooling over new Rolexes or Omegas, I hunt around mostly for rare, Japanese watches, especially divers.

Good video and good points. I see how that would be the case, worrying about a very expensive or flashy watch, especially with a gold President. But as for me, every single day I'm wearing an explorer, and that just works for me. Low key, no one ever knows I'm wearing a Rolex. I love looking at a variety of watches on the internet, but I get a feeling of comfort wearing the same workhorse day in and day out, so I like to just have one watch. Anyways, that's just my perspective. Thanks for posting yours!

i had a Rolex datejust about 10yrs ago and ended up selling it because i needed extra cash but always pined for it after it was gone. my father passed away last year and left me a small amount of money, so i began browsing slightly for another nice watch and ended up buying a Rolex Submariner 50th anniversary edition, used, but in mint condition. I love it to death, but i understand about price compared to practicality and am still coming to terms with that. i think i could have found a better use for my money. ive even thought about selling it already, not even owning it a year yet. you mention people notice your Rolexes when you wear them out, but ive only had one guy notice mine and comment. i certainly dont look like someone who would own a 100 dollar watch, let alone a Rolex so maybe no one looks to see what ive got around my wrist. i enjoy your videos and good luck with the Seikos.

I think there is also a lot of quality for the money to be found in Swatch made Swiss watches such as Tissot and Hamilton along with other Swiss brands such as Victorinox. These can be picked up for $200 used and up to $1000 brand new retail for flagship models. They are all powered by ETA movements and are extremely reliable and accurate while only costing a fraction to be serviced compared to something like Rolex or Omega.

You can also find great Swiss Made Rolex homage pieces by renowned brands like Squale or big up-and-comers like Steinhart. These reliable Swiss watches can be had for $400-500 brand new powered by the ETA 2824-2. You can even get an Invicta 8926ob with a Seiko NH35A movement for less than $100 if you really want to be cheap and get a Submariner homage. My problem with Rolex is that they are priced based on their name and not on the watch. The Submariner used to be a tool watch, designed to be used in harsh conditions and be abused. If you adjust for inflation, most Rolexes 30-40 years ago cost about $1500-2000 brand new, including the Explorer and Submariner. They didn't cost the equivalent of $8000-10000. If they cost the more reasonable $1500-2000, I would certainly own one, but I purchase for relative capability, quality, and styling, not for the name brand.

Solid reasoning for you, a watch should be fun not create worries. The security issue isn't an issue for me based on where I live and what I do for a living but the other points you make are very solid. I love Seiko's, they are vastly under rated especially the Grand Seiko and the most expensive Seiko Diver. Your a solid dude who made choices based on being honest with yourself, a lot of guys don't have that kind of self awareness or security in themselves. You can tell when a guy or gal is insecure and need things to be part of a costume that creates who they are, you don't need that. More power to you bro. If your ever in North Idaho gimme a tell I can set you up with one hell of a week. Hunting, beer, women, lake side home....just ask.

a buddy of mine wears a fake rolex just for 1 reason. there are a lot of pickpockets and thugs on the way he goes to work wearing his suit, his thought is that if someone tries to attack him and demand money, he can just take off the watch and offer it, most thugs can't really tell a well made fake rolex, and posibly the attacker would be pleased by the watch and just run away, leaving the guy and his other possessions like wallet and briefcase intact. and i aggree it is a perfect idea. fake rolex watches go for 20$ at the flea market and online. he has 4-5 just in case. and wears his genuine swiss watches for formal occasions only

It is true the mechanical watches are very delicate when compared to most of the low cost shock resistant electronic watches. The only drawback with fine mechanical expensive watches is they have to be cleaned and maintained about every 4 to 5 years. This is expensive especially when owning many of them. I never have problems with people recognizing my watches. I keep them covered under my shirt sleeve. Most people who saw my watch commented about why I like to wear a replica. If I told them it is a real one they would not believe me. They simply laugh at me. I wear some Omega watches. The Japanese movements are excellent for the price. They are also a lot less expensive to have serviced. The Japanese also make excellent quartz electronic watches. For low cost accuracy nothing can beat a quartz electronic watch. With the Japanese watches I like the Citizen, and Seiko. These are terrific quality watches. The value is terrific for the cost.

Rolex and other luxury brands survive based on their brand prestige. People want to buy a Rolex because it makes them feel good about themselves. Mercedes cars work the same way. The fact that they are expensive is one of the reasons people want them. Owning a Rolex or a Mercedes isn't about owning the best car or watch, it's about joining an elite club that few can afford to join. It's all about the marketing.

There is another option here and that is middle ground. Bought a Deep Sea when they came out in 08 and worn it ever since- no problems! Gave the Explorer to my 12 year old nephew who now wears it. you don't go into a Rolls Royce dealership asking "how much does this one cost"; you don't buy a Rolex if you have to worry about cost of servicing what every 5 years or so?

People of all incomes generally spend the same proportion of their wealth to fund purchases. A Jaeger le Coultre, Leica M, mid-engine Ferrari to a millionaire is like a Tissot, Canon, BMW 3 series to modest income people. Because of brand exclusivity, historic reputation (pioneers, innovation, etc...), and rarity the wealthy person may even have more genuine investment opportunities with their rare and discriminating purchases. Whilst the modest incomer is more likely to get what seems fair when they trie to sell their 'run of the mill' items and move on.

I go through the same buy-sell phases. Unfortunately, I always end up buying another Rolex in less than a year I always buy minty second hand and I try to buy the models that I'm sure will bump up in value by the time I'm ready to flip i.e. the 16613 blue sub and 16710 GMT MASTER II pepsi. I definitely feel a bit guilty knowing the value on my wrist could be spent better elsewhere, but loving wristwatches and horology, I seem to scratch the itch of having at least one pinnacle brand of watchmaking in my humble collection. I don't ride motorcycles anymore, but I tell myself a motorcycle gets less use/pleasure and is more costly than my Rolex.., but I never sold my bikes out of guilt...so why should I would I my Rolex? I also keep insurance on my Rolex...definitely lessens the burden of worrying about theft or even "mysterious disappearance". It's a stand alone policy and only about $10 for every $1,000 of value. Can't beat that for peace of mind. Great video, thanks for sharing!

I understand and respect your reasoning. However, I have to ask. Why the need for so many watches? Why not sell everything (even the cheaper stuff), and just have one or two watches you LOVE? I am musician, and very into musical gear. There was a point, where I had a ton of stuff, and realized I wasn't "in love" with any of it. It was just stuff, to have stuff. I eventually sold everything, and now only have three main pieces of gear that I LOVE. I don't have an itch to buy gear anymore, like at all. With watches, I am new to the game, and recently picked up a 16610 Sub, and I love it. There's a lot of other watches I love to (like a Speedy or a YM), but there's only two that make my heart beat, and that's the Sub (which I have) and the BLNR. I feel if I have those two, I'm basically set. This was long drawn, but just sharing my personal thoughts!

Nice video. I've basically gone the same route in selling my Rolex watches. I'm really enjoying the Seiko SKX's, the SARB035, the Alpinist, the SRP Turtles, Citizen Promaster Divers, and the Orient Pro Saturation white dial watch, also the Hamilton Khaki King, are keepers for me. The only luxury or more expensive timepiece I would like to own is the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch mostly for its historical significance.

It seem to me that the main purpose of a watch is for telling the accurate time. You can buy a budget watch that is as accurate as a watch 3000+. The budget watch will not possibly last as long but you have the opportunity to buy hundreds of them without being out of pocket. I have owned expensive watches. I would rather wear for everyday use a good budget watch knowing I won't be assaulted or robbed for the watch (so don't wear a fake either!), and if damaged I buy a new maybe different design one without claiming insurance. If you own a really valuable watch as I have, you are wearing it not primerrally for telling the time, but for your own vanity.

Loved your review especially since I, too, have moved away from Swiss watches. Not for any particular reason other than for quality, fit, durability and price point, you can't beat Seiko/Orient JDM's. I had an automatic Tag Link, Breitling Superocean and an Omega Seamaster. They are all gone. I think I just had enough of the servicing costs $500-$700. I couldn't do it anymore. I now have the SBDC007 (Shogun), SARB065 (Cocktail Time) and just picked up 2 Recrafts.The SNKM07 and the SNKM02 for about $135 each. I think they were inspired by your Flyback. I now have my eyes on the SDGM003.

+tony trinidad Well said. I like your pieces. I'd like to pick up a Shogun myself. It isn't about how much something cost but rather how much value you can get for the money.

Got to agree with your sentiment. Why would you wear a sign that says "Mug me, I'm loaded with money" on your wrist. Japanese watches are wonderful. If you just collect and never wear a watch then yes, Swiss is worth having due to craftsmanship. It's art collecting at that point which is fine if that's what you want to do.

I ran into your part 2 video and your right...you are all over the place on this video... I know exactly what you mean, the price to maintain to own is high and the price to maintain is high. This is one of the reasons preowned is something to take advantage of if your ok with owning a preowned watch...save money where you can. When you decide to flick them then you wont loose much or anything with the exception of the service costs. I have a Seiko 6159-7010 which is one of the most important divers in Seiko's history...it was made to compete with the Rolex Sea Dweller (yeah it was made to be a beater but it was not cheap back in the day and still commands a decent chunk of change now). I like this watch just as much as any of the other swiss watches I have. Regarding Rolex...they are a well marketed mass produced entry level high end swiss watch...in the end its just a well executed high quality watch. I do disagree with you regarding the quality of that Seiko Diver because I have handled an example of the that Seiko Diver you mentioned in the other video...if you really dive into it(no pun intended) the Submariner is just at another level...I'd go into why but that would take a while. The Seiko is nice but its no Rolex, hell its no Tudor...it just another example of Seiko's ability to market a nice looking automatic watch at a good price... Now a Grand Seiko...especially their Spring Drive Diver or even their GMT...stunners in my book and comparable to Rolex. You really have to pay the piper to get the real haute horology pieces which in my book is pretty much mechanical art work (i.e. nothing Rolex Makes Currently). A. Lange & Söhne has some of the best example I have seen that are "reasonably" priced (Patek Range). In my opinion you get a lot more from a Lange vs a Patek. If you take a loop and examine the movement on a Lange it will make any of those jap watches look like dog shit but that's to be expected for a watch that starts around 30k preowned. But consider this you can get a solid gold ceramic Rolex Sub with gold bracelet for 25k or a Gold Lange 1 Time Zone on strap for about 28k on the prowoned market. The Lange is art...the Rolex is just a gold diver with nothing really special to show for it other than some external brush work(I am not counting some of the mechanical improvements to the design but those are to be apprecieated)... The Lange mvt is like a small work of art...and the quality of the exterior is just as nice.

Very well said. I recently bought the Ever Gold Yacht Master. My second Rolex which I was often wearing a Chopard as an everyday watch. To say people treat you different is an understatement. Funny as it is that people never saw me differently wearing my Chopard. I've realize that most people don't have a clue about Chopard or the high end luxury watch market. The average public thinks Rolex is way up there in the watch world and you must be an ass to buy one. Little do they know the Chopard was at least 10x the cost of a Rolex. Ignorance is bliss they say. When it gets down to it if any watch or jewelry is causing you concern or stress. You were wise to get rid of them. At the end of the day is only a watch and also a wise investment. Good luck to you

I have been into luxury watch collecting and secondary resale since the late 90's and I believe there is another crash coming for mechanical watches, one where there will not be a recovery! Sell, sell and do not look back, the Swiss are nuts, everything sold overpriced!

There are very few material things in life that a man buys or receives as a present that better represents a lifelong extension of their personality and tastes than a wrist watch. I have never been able fathom where this perennial argument fits in about a $10 Casio keeps better time than a high end swiss COSC automatic? Of course it does, and so what? Accurate time is in the air, and everywhere, it is free! I have a beautiful 1992 Seiko T59 chronograph sitting next to my gorgeous 2012 Jack Heuer Calibre 17. They are $thousands apart, they both keep good time, look great, and I appreciate them for their particular idiosyncrasies and fitness for occasion. They are not just my companions - they are me, and thats all that matters.

My boss's Rolex Presidential cost him over $600 to get serviced every five years, which could buy you a really good Seiko or Orient diver with a great movement and sapphire glass. Of course, if that sum is a pittance to you, like it is to my boss, then by all means, carry on...

+MrDlt123 If you buy something good, you have to plan to pay for proper maintenance. It's the same with anything of value. Speaking of value, the Rolex President you speak of can last several lifetimes and be truly treasured by those who wear it. Can the same be said of a Seiko?
@MrDlt123
@MrDlt123 8 лет назад
Actually, yes. Rolexes are made of steel, just as are those from many other manufactures; not from some secret alien alloy that was smelted from crashed UFOs, as so many Rolex fan boys like you would have everyone believe. Proper maintenance on any watch will make it last. My father's $8 Timex that he bought in 1976 is still working and accurate to this day; with no maintenance whatsoever. -Not optimal, but it proves the reliability of modern steel and components. Rolex owners tend to think of their watches as investments, making them feel obligated to conduct expensive maintenance. Whereas a Seiko owner is more likely to think of their watches as a commodity; to be tossed when it begins to malfunction, or is no longer aesthetically viable. A $200 Seiko can also be serviced and maintained, but said service is often more expensive than it would cost to simply toss the watch and buy another - not true with a $20K Rolex, for example. So, it's entirely simplistic to point at a 50-year old Rolex that's been serviced every 5 years and any other watch that is the same age but has never been serviced and is showing severe degradation. If a Rolex isn't periodically serviced, it will break down, like any other watch does. I'm not at all suggesting that a Seiko Monster is on par with a Rolex Sub, but let's stop with placing Rolexes on a pedestal. They're great watches indeed, but not mechanical marvels that can disobey the laws of physics.

+MrDlt123 In response, while most Rolexes are made of steel, many are made of precious metals and by their very nature are much more desirable. Steel is good for sporting and hard work applications, while gold and platinum are best for more genteel affairs. I am not a fan of Rolex, although I very much respect the brand, their people, and their overall position in the marketplace. The oyster case in particular is legendary as is their robustness and reliability of their movements. In the 70s, when the courts revolution was taking place, with Seiko coming into its own, the Swiss watch manufacturing industry believed itself slated for oblivion. Over time, that’s certainly has not been the case. Emphasis on quality and craftsmanship still remain in the heart of the enthusiast and those who appreciate fine workmanship. The Swiss watch industry has generally thrived by desire for higher quality products that have been able to be achieved through the use of minor design and CNC machining techniques, not before possible. Parts can now be made to extremely minute tolerances and with total consistency. Combined with traditional micro mechanics, assembly and finishing techniques, the level of quality is simply unsurpassed among the world’s top watchmaking brands. Rolex is no exception. As an enthusiast and hobbyist, who has studied watches and their creative houses for decades, I’ve come to have a certain appreciation for the people and the skills behind individual brands and their overall philosophy in terms of creating the finest watches the world has ever seen. I prefer a Patek Philippe and Piaget watches. Both are historically family-owned companies, and I have had the distinct privilege of knowing many fine people who are associated with such legends in the watchmaking industry. Let’s make no mistake, Rolex is a mass-produced brand with over 1 million examples created per year. One cannot argue with success. Rolex is a grand master in marketing and brand recognition worldwide. For the connoisseur however, firms at the apex of the watchmaking industry produce a limited number of creations per year, typically not to exceed 20,000. Most of whom are considered ”manufactures”, which means they have the unique distinction of being able to make all necessary components in-house as opposed to outsourcing to external suppliers. This way complete quality control can be maintained throughout the design, engineering, parts production, assembly, finishing, and most importantly after sales service. A person purchasing a fine watch 30 years ago can reasonably expect the manufacture able to service that particular watch far into the future. Watches for too many people represent more than a mere timepiece. In my example, I purchased special watches to mark notable events and accomplishments in my life. They are not mere commodities to be bought and sold, but hold a special place in my heart as they represent a special moment in my own life’s journey. The same is true of many enthusiasts and those who appreciate many of the finest things the world has to offer. You speak of an eight dollar Timex that was purchased several decades ago. With all due respect, that may be fine for a person who holds a special attachment to that individual piece. And that is perfectly acceptable. I can state with confidence, that no CEO of any Fortune 1000 company wears a Timex to a board meeting. Once again, I focus on the necessity for any individual in business, and in an executive or management capacity, to make a conscious decision to purchase a top quality watch if nothing else than in order to make a good first impression in both business and social situations. Stainless steel watches, and those of lesser metals, are certainly not appropriate for dress applications or those in which a favorable first impression is of ultimate importance. Rolex tends to be garish and many times overstated with the exception of the Cellini product line whose emphasis is to help capture its place within the top-tier luxury watch market. I visited many Swiss watchmakers over the years, I can testify without question there are significant differences between top-tier and moderate level watchmakers. Like any product, I have found that the last 5% necessary to create a truly superior quality piece often requires up to 50% of the total effort. It is the dedication to fine finishing and superb craftsmanship that truly makes the difference and allows top quality manufacturers the ability to excel over all others with more modest manufacturing philosophies. Watches in general should not be considered an investment. They should be considered a personal item that should be cherished and enjoyed for decades. Each watch tells a special story in many people’s lives. Rolex and PP have the unique distinction of being able to hold their value much better than others due to loyalty among enthusiasts and those who love the brand. This is the very essence of value. An excellent watch is a very worthwhile investment as it improves the overall quality of life for their owner. And that perhaps is its most significant benefit. In my humble opinion, a successful gentleman, or lady, should make the purchase of a fine watch a very important activity in their lives. It should be done carefully after extensive research and more importantly their emotional connection to the brand and the people themselves who stand behind the company and the history behind these legendary firms. A Rolls-Royce remains a Rolls-Royce. Remember, virtually any electronic device can tell accurate time. A fine watch helps make a special statement to both the wearer and those they come into contact. First impressions are very important, and I would never consider being a perspective customer or client for the first time without a fine Swiss watch on my arm. That would simply be unthinkable. Thank you for allowing me the ability to comment. Best regards.

J. ANTHONY Same here.... Just bought another vintage 6309-7040 diver, and a 6306 movement for the 1979 I have here. The original 6306 are way over 1500 bucks. And I'm not paying that for a 40 year old Seiko watch that looks exactly the same as mine. But the beating heart will be a 6306, and I'll know it. That's enough for me. Another watch with a story.... Just need to find someone here who will appreciate it.

I have to be honest.... I'm afraid that, when I get the 12k I need for the Sea Dweller Deep Sea, I will pretty much forget about my Seikos. At least for a while. I own a Ball Engineer Master II Skindiver II Watch COSC, it's accurate and very heavy built, it has a helium-valve, its bezel has a ceramic insert and you can dive it to 500 m, which I suppose you never will anyway. It's a watch with character and costs a fraction of the Sea Dweller. Just saying.
