George Lukas said something about the difference between joy and pleasure. That when you get your first car, that is the peak! The second car will have to be twice as good to give the same feeling. Joy on the other hand don’t peak like pleasure. Joy wont go as high as pleasure in the short while, but last at lower levels in the long run. The joy of making music lasts longer than getting a new synth.

The Iridium is great for "I want to be able to make every conceivable sound ever"... but it's not as great at "I want to make songs". For songs, a person only really needs an instrument or two and some sort of DAW to arrange and layer recordings... and the qualities which matter most for the instruments are things like immediacy, ease of use, and expressiveness. Even with just one nice instrument and a DAW (er, a Pro 3 and a Force), I find that the factors which hold me back in song-making are almost never "I need sounds I can't make". The limiting factors are almost always my own time, skill, and physical abilities. So, basically, instead of getting GAS, I gotta git GUD. If I'm not pumping out bangers, I've got nothing to blame but myself.

Let me tell you what I loved about this content. It's a grown man sharing what he needs and who made a decisive choice and able to explain why, logically. I thought about the Iridium as well, yet ended up getting the PolyEnd Tracker first, because I also love hands on. I am also thinking of getting the Kurzweil 2700 or the Roland Fantom8,since I also need a full set of keys, and something that will integrate with both DAWs and hardware samplers. I have 4 samplers, older Macs ,a few PCs, and analog/digital synths. I gave away a Yamaha sampler because of the menu diving needed, just to get anything going..

I agree about the pads on the Iridium. They should have been velocity and aftertouch (poly even!) sensitive. I do like the way they utilized them for the sequencing functionality, but there's no reason to have committed that much surface real estate and then not made them more powerful as a performance interface. For me, there are two things that would REALLY improve the Iridium: 1) From an exploration and programming standpoint, leverage shortcuts for the modulation matrix. The power and the flexibility of this instrument is truly staggering and I appreciate that. Six LFOs and six envelopes?! BRILLIANT! And the copious destinations to which one can assign them? OUTSTANDING! Endless scrolling to make that happen? OUCH! ASM addressed this exquisitely in the interface of the Hydrasynth (which is a close second for modulation sources - five LFOs and five envelopes). Granted, the Iridium doesn't have a dedicated button for each LFO and envelope like the Hydrasynth, but they should be able to find someway to make a shortcut. Perhaps clicking and holding one of the six context-sensitive encoders that surround the screen while in the Modulation view and then toggling the LFO/envelope and then letting go of the encoder. Then just assign the amount of modulation. I can't help but think that there could be a way to fast-track that process. 2) Multi-sample importing needs to be automated. I appreciate the flexibility of importing samples and assigning them however you want. But we've had hardware and software sampling for decades now. I logged my time on my S900 back in the '80s and early '90s. I don't need to revisit manually sample mapping. With an instrument this advanced, importing a multi-sample should be automatic. Just saying. Sure, I could come up with much longer list of wishes, but these two are the big ones for me that would make the Iridium much more inviting to program. I understand why you got rid of it and I respect your observations on the Korg instruments. From a programming standpoint, I think they really found a sweet spot. I only wish that they felt more solid. I spent some time with the Opsix and I loved the interface. However, it just felt...cheap. I so wanted more from that instrument. I ended up getting a Kodamo EssenceFM mkII and I love it. However, like the Iridium, it relies quite a bit on the touch screen as an interface. I am a fan of knobs and sliders and think that Korg nailed it with their interface. Perhaps they will release a module version that feels more professional. I don't need the keys. I have plenty of keyboards with excellent keybeds. We'll see. Oh - and I completely agree with the Modwave and even the Wavestate. These are brilliant engines. I would just like them housed in a more rugged chassis. Part of my appreciation of a good interface is the psychological impact of the tactile experience. If the encoders feel like cheap plastic, it really distracts me from the experience. I'll confess to being picky, but over 20 years ago I bought my Peavey PC-1600 to program software synths and that thing is made out of steel with SOLID sliders. To go from that to something like the encoders on the Opsix is like switching from fine cutlery to a plastic spork. Even if the food is great, the eating experience isn't the same. Does that make sense? Again, I acknowledge that I'm picky. But I doubt that I'm the only one. Thanks for sharing your observations and your experience. Hopefully, one day you'll stumble upon a cheap Iridium or Quantum that would justify adding it to your sonic arsenal once again. Perhaps by then, they will have had some interesting firmware updates to make it even more enticing. Since they've released the Iridium keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch, I can't help but think that they will have an opportunity to put out a few more firmware updates. :) Peace.

Thanks for this dis-free assessment. 🙂 I took a chance that this was going to be a bitter pan of my new Iridium Keyboard that arrived from Germany 2 days ago, but it actually made me feel very positive about instrument choice. I also felt a bit safe in viewing your video since a pan job would have been antithetical to everything I saw in extensively researching my purchase. For my style of experimental improv semi-musician sound textures dabbling with talented friends, I think it is going to be a excellent fit with my Linnstrument controller in creating supportive soundscapes to back my found instrument ++ HandSonic 15 percussion aesthetic. 🙂 I definitely prefer hardware to software instruments, and with the HandSonic I've come to like the idea of having everything in one package a lot. With the tripple threat of the Iridium, the Linnstrument and the Handsonic, I think I have more than enough to keep me happily fiddling while the world burns for my final decade or two.

I ended up going down a few fun acquisition(correction-Expensive) holes because of your vids, but glad I did. It's funny though, you finally get that piece of gear you've been lusting after for so long and immediately there is another "the most amazing piece of gear you don't own" RU-vid video that makes you add another costly dream to your iPhone notes wish-list which never seems to get shorter. So this video post of yours is a healthy one! Use what you already have or find a cheaper way to achieve it...Or, if nothing else, for those of us that do not have a proper studio space, realize that there is actually a Maximum Weight Load Per Shelf warning on those Costco shelves in the small apartment bedroom. I've loved what you have done with your tape loops and modular stuff-especially when it has come to breaking up audio/granular stuff. I'm interested now, because I have Straylight but haven't explored it too much, can you use the granular engine on your own samples? I'll have to snoop out some tutorials now, or maybe you'll post one here. Would love to hear how you would use StraylIght in conjunction with your piano stuff. Thanks for another great vid.

I've had similar conclusions about the Iridium but twisted them to my own weird justification to buy one. If I get the "one polysnyth to rule them all", then my G.A.S. stops there and I don't lust after others because "I can already do that with the Iridium". Now I can just dump all my money in modular without being distracted by other polysynths :D

I get it. On top of the deep complexity of a digital synth like the iridium, i have this other problem regarding digitals: next year, someone will introduce the iridium killer which does 2x as much, for 1/2 the price. right now, the value is in the coding and algorithms, not the hardware. i see that changing as other manufacturers learn->copy->improve the software and the value drops way down. Add in software upgrades and bug fixes and i feel just fine waiting on any new pure digitals (ie vst in its own special box)

I can definitely appreciate this. I enjoy my Iridium, but the menu diving (even/especially on the touch screen) can be a bit much, and sometimes it feels like it’s good at a few things, but not as great at one, or lacks some immediacy. I’m really on the fence about keeping it, but find that I do gravitate to other pieces of hardware in my setup which are either more immediate (e.g. one knob per function), or are less generalists and just do one thing really solidly, as you’ve articulated well. At some point if I don’t get to using it enough, I suppose it will have to go, but I’m going to try and give it another concerted effort. Good call on Straylight as well, I find it useful in the DAW; for something granular OOB, I would also say the Tasty Chips GR-1 is the ultimate piece of kit.

@stylusnation
@stylusnation 2 года назад
@@robertmazurowski5974 I think a lot of it will come down to what your workflow is like and what you’re used to. I’m much more used to the tactility of hardware, and to some degree the forced constraints that hardware imposes. Sometimes I find software instruments offer too many choices, configurations, etc and it really slows me down. But that’s just my style, and why I like hardware and its immediacy. Part of it is also that I play live and I find hardware a lot more reliable for that. Now the Iridium also blurs the lines a bit, which is to say it has a deep interface so that makes it a bit more like software in some ways, which I occasionally struggle with. In any case I think it comes down to what you’re looking to do, your personal style, and an interface that helps you be as productive as possible. Never an easy decision, and of course always a number of dollars attached to it. 😅 Good luck with your decision! And I’d be curious to see where you end up…

Very interesting thoughts. I just watched loopop use Iridium for 1 hour and as much as Iridium looks like a dream come true I can't help but feel like I might get more satsifaction out of the does 1 thing really well kind of work flow. Fantastic sounds on the op six at the end by the way. Thats on my radar now. I'm really really wanting a Sequential pro 3 for mono synth bass duties. It looks incredible. Thats kind of going down the one thing really well route. A really feature rich beefy mono. I like lots of options, but also immediacy. But if cram too many options into one thing then you lose that immediacy and I think that Iridium might cross that threshold for me. It has an insane amount of features. Perhaps too much. Maybe the op 6 and the pro 3 and possibly an UDO 6 desk top now for poly duties since thats just come out.

You can‘t discourage me; I recently ordered an Iridium keyboard, because: - it has a better UI, - excellent keybed with poly AT, - it has that screen which lets you see what you‘re doing. - it can hopefully replace my Prophet X (*that* is an overpriced synth!) and my Hydrasynth (excellent, but not as good as the Iridium). Sure, there are always alternatives. I‘ll keep my MODX FM monster. I have Pigments for all kinds of crazy stuff, but well - software. I don‘t expect the Iridium to obsolete my PolyBrute, OB-6 or any other analog synth. But in the digital hardware world, it is in fact all under one roof; I like it.

can't go wrong with the op six , the immediacy and modulation capabilities are plenty for sound design minded player. It really is about work flow when your looking for a sound. I turn a knob I get a thing, I like thing, I don't like thing. Clicking through menus is a time suck and inspiration killer. The best poly synths right now are , Polybrute, Super 6, Summit, Hydrasynth, anything Korg for both sound and work flow. With the exception of the Hydrasynth line, all have a pretty good knob per function layout with menu options only a click away, Hydra is still a nice work flow too. They all have a unique character and price point for the working musician to get into.

Valid points and that's what is stopping me from buying an Iridium (which I really want)...but having owned (and sold) an opsix it is not really hands on other than operators volume and ratios. Digging in the mod matrix, assigning envelopes, making complex patches is really a pita. If you want to play the opsix you have to page through menu and find filters, envelopes and stuff. I'll likely buy an Iridium though, I prefer to have 2/3 synths that do a lot instead of a lot of little boxes for one task since I don't use software. This is subjective ofc. Great channel btw, thanks for the insights.

I've been lusting for this workhorse from day one, but I've decided not to buy any new big ticket items until I sell something of equal value. It's my way of holding GAS at bay , which works well since I find it hard to let go of anything. That said, I'm very tempted to sell or trade my MD MK2+ for one though. Iridium would probably be the last digital synth I'll ever need or want.

#metoo miss Iridium, I was fun.... but I funded analogue gear, sounds I liked making on Iridium. Freed up desk space for better pads with after touch. Got software that can control with mouse or better/more knobs. Cos last thing beats me, why no VST counterpart to such a rich functionality synth? Polybrute has it on top of analogue. It leaves Iridium hardware VST without VST part. I guess Waldorf did not want people understand it as digital VST box, but it is. Nothing wrong with that, but has no hands.

You can absolutely control the operator level and ratio multiple ways in the Kernel FM engine of the Iridium. If you’re into faders you could map an external controller like the 16n faderbank to both of those parameters and more. Or just simply assign to one of the five encoders associated with that oscillator.
@JamesonNathanJones
@JamesonNathanJones 2 года назад
True. I did use the oscillator encoders for that when I had it. I still think there’s something to be said for having a set control for every operator which requires no setup. That’s both the beauty and the flaw (for me) of Iridium. It can do SO much so many ways.

Yeah. I would have to agree. It's much better to have a few synths that do their own thing good than to have one, ridiculously expensive synth that claims to do everything, but in reality each of all these separate things that it does is very basic. I still want Iridium though, just not willing to put out so much cash at once.

And now they are putting out the Iridium Keyboard version. What do you think of that option? It is supposed to be knob per function with aftertouch. I canceled the my ordered Iridium back in February 2021. I bought the Moog Matriarch dark version instead, which I am in love with. However the Keyboard version of the Iridium may have to be my next purchase. I don't have any other big synths, However I do have a Korg Minilogue XD. I am looking to have only 2 big synths. My Moog Matriarch is #1. I an considering the Iridium Keyboard. I love the idea of the Fatar Keyboard and the knob perfunction iridium. I'd really like to know your thoughts. @@JamesonNathanJones So I find myself at place to make a choice between a Moog Sub 37 and the Waldorf Iridium Keyboard. I currently have a Moog Matriarch, Mother 32, Tasty Chips GR-1 and Korg Minilogue XD. I have also considered a Sequential Prophet 16-voice V2 and considered waiting for the Roland Juno X. I have also considered a new Apple Studio computer and just go with VSTs, however I really am looking for a close to knob per function workflow. Working in the box feels stifling to me and I tend to get lost in the VST malaise with too many choices. Also I am very afraid the Moog Sub 37 and Moog Matriarch are too close in sound for the mix I am looking for. I love a variety of texture. I also use a Roland MC707 and TR8S and SP 404 MK2, and MPC ONE. I work with a sound design work flow and love to twiddle knobs to dial in sound a lot. Also a lot of my work uses field recording and love to work with other self captured samples. I keep coming back to the Iridium and the keyboard version is very enticing. A one synth does all sounds like heaven and will keep me out of the computer screen. I don't want to feel this way but computers really limit my creative process. I love the Idea of DAW less or DAW for mixing and mastering only. I would love to just recored to a 8 or 16 track recorder and just feel entirely free, in the moment and lost in the experience and process. I really respect your opinion Jameson Nathan Jones. have the budget right now to have one of these great options. Please share your thoughts.

Perhaps granular & wavetable synthesis just doesn't tickle my taste buds....but moments ago,I watched a video on the Iridium & I was not impressed & quite disgusted at the price tag. This is after having been exposed to the Modal COBALT8X yesterday....the video I had watched on that synth was an ethereal experience with a joy you could not measure. Shockingly...the synth is only $949( & currently on sale for $849!)

There are lots of great digital synth out now, and the Cobalt line does sound great. In fairness to the Iridium, most of the demos I’ve seen don’t really do it justice. It does so many things it’s easy to throw the kitchen sink at a patch. There are a lot of sweet spots in there though.
@HighlandStudio91
@HighlandStudio91 2 года назад
@@JamesonNathanJones Whatever sweet spots may exist within the Iridium, it does not justify the price tag(for me.) There's plenty of wavetable & granular synth options in my Reason DAW, anyhow. The most compelling & beautiful feature about the Modal COBALT8X, is the instant gratification of the physical controls(without the deep menu diving.) The Modal really caters to me in a profound way...in that, it offers all of the glorious analog warmth & character of an analog synth(while having all of the benefits of a digital format.) Also...I have legions of softsynths that do an amazing job....but the COBALT8X offers a very simplistic & effortless approach to creating new & inspiring sounds.Moreover, there wasn't a sound that I've ever heard from this synth, that I didn't like(in fact,I was blown away by all of the sounds....which is an extremely rare thing.)

Waldorf synths are alluring - and the cinematic vibe is like crack. But I find they don't have a place in my studio. I had a Waldorf Quantum early on and I sold it inside 60 days. I found myself addicted to sitting there are making martian landscapes and the euphoric and morphing pads - with no real musical outcome after a few hours. The only useful thing that *sometimes* came out of it were elements of PPG Wave 2.x. But I find my Matriarch, Prophet 10, 2600, and UDO S6 much more useful in the actual music making process - due to their instant "inspiration". I'm not interested in creating Sci-Fi planetary soundtracks. And aside from a few cold bells and plucks which I can do elsewhere, it didn't have a place. (the UDO can occasionally get into that cinematic pad place, so you need to pull back at times, but it does the PPG and Fm thing so well and without a display). I'm sure a bit of the decision to sell the Q was based on not wanting to drill so deep into an onboard GUI and the complexities. I don't mention some of my other synths to brag, but rather to illustrate that I prefer a bit more "knob and keys" organic approach with less "screen". As a pianist I think you can concur - sometimes we just want to flip the power switch in our entire studio and get back to the fundamental of hammers hitting strings, with a glass of red wine. Just followed you on IG - Cheers.

In the end it is a matter of remaining space in the studio. I'm running a 3 year list of which synths I really used for productions and which ones were only there to "have them if needed". All the latter went to my storage, and you may be surprised, just a very few synths are still at my reach! Moog One 16, Moog Voyager, Studio Electronics ATC-Xi, Sequential Pro3 and Prophet 10 as well as the *Waldorf Iridium* are here plus two Oberheim Matrix in the rack. Korg Polysix, Oberheim Xa, Roland Juno 60 & 106 & JP-8000, rompler stuff like Korg Karma &Triton & Wavestation & Z1 (not a real rompler but early VA) & M1, Yamaha DX7-II, Moog Subsequent 37 & Mother-32 & DFAM & Little Phatty II & Matriarch, Yamaha just to mention a fraction of them, have not been USED since more than 5 years. They live in the cellar now. So, why is the Iridium making it? Well, as you see, except for the SE ATC-Xi and the two OB Matrix, it is much younger. So I dunno what's gonna be still here in a few years. On its own, the Moog One simply blows it away, but in the mix, it sometimes sits very well and is a great replacement for old FM hardware.

I just can't get into the build quality of those little Korgs. I had the Wavestate, Opsix, Minilogue XD. They all sound great but just felt like garbage to me. But I'm also not into the desktop Iridium. Personally, I'd rather pay more for something that's built better. I also prefer big, bulky, heavy instruments. They feel more like instruments to me. Definitely more a Quantum kind of guy. For me, going for the "one synth that does one thing really well" just quickly turned into 35 - 40 synths that all do one thing really well or have some odd character difference or whatever. Now I'm trying to switch gears and have a handful of really nice, high end synths that do a lot more and I'm trying not twitch out and obsess over "oh but this one does this a little better and that one does that a little better" etc. I'll probably grab a Quantum and I'm hoping that will make me okay with selling my XTK but if not I can probably find something else to sell.

My thoughts on this. Very few people making ambient music are actually making any money. So let's just say you are doing this for fun. I think it is important to balance expenditures on equipment vs how much everyday use they will see. This would be a worthwhile purchase if it is going to see everyday use. From my personal experience and observations of other creatives, once you get past the fourth synth, you are just turning into a collector/hoarder. Unless of course you are running a studio that has paying clients. How many of us are doing that?

to each their own, no doubt :). in my opinion the iridium is the first synth to break so many boundaries and tie together the most advanced forms of synthesis. years ago i was brain storming with my partner about how pigments and omnisphere have an approach to romplers and granular synthesis, but you'd never find hardware that could even be on par with those components. I was inspired, and also a bit defeated, because in my mind I had seen so many great vsts do something in particular (pigments granular, omnisphere's rompler, serums fm), but somehow get confined to their single operation and own physics... if only there was gear or even software that could combine serums fm with pigments granular and omnisphere's rompler abilities.... Im not kidding, when I saw the demo of the iridium I couldn't believe it was actually happening... That being said, im a bit particular to high quality sound and performance from gear, but I already got bit by the bug with the iridium before I even had a chance to try it out or anything else... it's like the invention of the first rocket going into space... I wanted to experience that even if the technology wasn't refined - the fact is this synth and its technology is years and years ahead of its time, and the answer to the homogenous production of vsts and synths. Because I dreamt of hardware with its capabilities, and it came to reality in front of me, I committed to it before I even demoed it and looked more into it. So far, it's even more amazing than i imagined. I swear this synth has history written all over it. The mod matrix, and sequencing style, and everything else included is like a Picasso of influence from the greats that came before it.... nothing can compare, but to be fair, that doesn't mean it's right for everyone.

Okay. Foremost, thanks for the video. I’m considering the Iridium myself and this is the second video of yours I’ve come across this week. I probably have too many questions but hopefully you find the time to answer a few. lol Why the Modwave and not the Wavestate AND what’s the difference between the two? Genuinely asking because I, like you, wanted to spend less money, so I purchased the Opsix and the Wavestate instead. During my research, even till this day, I do not know the difference between the Modwave and the Wavestate. Do you think the Iridium’s screen compensated for the menu diving at all? Do you still have this setup and do you wish you had your Iridium back? Why or why not? **UPDATE** seen ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2oNfm6EMCeY.html - hilarious!
