Straight to the point. The 2020 YT Capra Pro 29 feeds on gravity. Accelerating out of corners and/or in the straights is its weakness.

Buy a used SB165 like me then mate, I was down to the Capra and SB165, I thought I wanted the Capra due to dh performance and cost but then I grabbed a used but in absolutely mint condition as if it were brand new Sb165 frame including Push elevensix for £2750. If you keep your eyes peeled on Pinkbike and Ebay occasionally you get like new stuff for ridiculous cheap. I bought a £1000 set of rims new for £200 also, I'm not rich at all but I just have some patience and wait for deal or secondhand parts so I can get a 10k bike for 5k.

If you only can get one bike you need something that will work everywhere. 3 things I did that really improved the speed and feel of my Capra when going uphill, in order of impact. 1, replaced the rear tire with something that rolls much faster (this was huge, felt like I could pedal one gear higher everywhere). 2, Decrease rear sag a few percentages (going from 30% to 25% rear sag made a very big difference in feel). 3, use an elliptical chainring (really cuts down on that feeling of the rear of the bike getting 'hung up' when making steep slow speed climbs over roots). After all these changes the bike still feels like a Capra, but the lap times show I've gained a lot of speed up hill and only my fitness is keeping me from catching my riding buddies on the climbs. Downhill I don't feel like I've lost anything.

MILTONATOR 👏🏼 Large or Medium? That’s the one bike I would have had a hard time choosing the size, never tried the medium, but my only gripe with the large was in slower speed sections of trail or in moments of maneuvering quickly from left or right. Dialing in the right reach and stack height combined with the right seated position on the saddle.. should be the ticket for finding a nice balance 👌🏼 I’ll wait to hear your full thoughts and feedback of course after a few more rides! All in all ~ What an Amazing Bike🚲🌟

Really interesting! Glad I grabbed a patrol instead of a Capra when I was looking at both. I wonder if a different compression tune on the shock would have helped. Some more low speed compression might have been the answer, but then again, Ive heard that the bike is not a good pedaler from basically everyone who owns it
@MILTONATOR

It’s branded as an enduro bike but it’s leans heavily more on the free ride side. It’s incredibly plush going down. Climbing is ok locking out the shock... but accelerating out of corners or on the straights (while in the open position) sucks!!! Congrats on the Patrol ✌️

The problem with the YT Bikes is the suspension is a basic four bar linkage which has been around since the 90s and has never been known having a pedalling platform, but provides great bump absorption and active suspension under braking. Bikes like the vpp Santa Cruz and Intense and DW link Pivots and Ibis feel so much more snappy under power and have very little pedal bob in comparison, whilst only giving away a little bit in plushness to the YT. I’d love to try a Forbidden Druid as the high chain line should be the best of both worlds.
@MILTONATOR
@MILTONATOR 3 года назад
Well said! “Snappy under power” is spot on. Gonna use that in my Pivot review🤘
@leomolloy5067
@leomolloy5067 3 года назад
Saying that different styles of linkages make a difference is kinda Marketing BS. IV analysed many linkages over the years and found 4 bar is the most tunable and has worked flawlessly for the moto industry for decades. The issue is that manufacturers are constantly playing a game to find the right balance between pedal kickback and antisquat and in the case of yt they made that choice. Another benefit of the "old" fourbar is the leverage ratio can be tuned without affecting antisquat therefore allowing the manufacturer to make changes without an entire redesign. Also I personally own a forbidden and I would tell you to save your money. It looks amazing on paper but has so many issues in real life. The chain spits oil all over your pants or leg, it has countless creaking issue from being there first rodeo and the chainstay grows by about 28mm making it feel like a bit of couch in the corners.

What you could have done to reduce pedal bob would be to use a smaller chainring, like 30t non-elliptical one, that would have pedalled alright. I used a 30t elliptical and it was fine, and to make up for the reduction in chainring size I used a 9-46 e*13 cassette. The problem was when I came to the conclusion that these cassettes wore out too quickly for how much they cost, and to go with a 10 teeth alternative I would have to use a 34t chainring, and that's what actually motivated my change of bike to something with a higher anti-squat, that could take a larger chainring without creating pedal bob.

Pedal bob is correlated with anti-squat. More anti-squat means less pedal bob. If you want to reduce pedal bob, you'll need change chain ring to 30t or even 28t. Smaller chain ring increase also pedal kickback. High pedal kickback results more active, lively suspension. Low pedal kickback and anti-squat result in plush ride.

personlay i would say to not get the ransom, I've had experience with it and i didn't like it. the suspension does not feel solid like others, it feels closer to a trail bike than a enduro (though that seems to be what this guy wants), the linkage is really easy to rattle loose, but this thing just loses all composure on fast and jittery straights, big impacts, and basically anything you would see at a DH track. it just fails to track the ground and be responsive when it needs too, the geo still feels a little too short too and the bike is just not very stable

Tyler Thompson The climbing wasn’t too bad because I simply locked out the shock. And on the way down it’s awesome! It was the bobbing under pressure- accelerating out of corners or on a straightaway, that’s where it suffered.

The Capra has a flip switch that literally changes the geometry for climbing, No? Or am I wrong?
@MILTONATOR
@MILTONATOR 3 года назад
Not really. The flip chip slackens the head tube angle by .5 degrees. For climbing, I would lock out the shock and it worked. However when coming down (shock fully opened) and I hit a straightaway or came out of a corner and i wanted to pedal to keep/gain speed, that’s when the bike sank deep into its travel and became noticeably inefficient. If that makes sense

I bought the Canyon Torque, basically YT Capra's closest competitor. The reason why is a good contrast to yours; and it might help people get closer to what they want in a bike. Wanted a downhill bike initially, but after people telling me stories about owning DH bikes, and riding one... I knew a downhill bike wasn't the route. But i still wanted a bike that can monstertruck stairs and do some gnarly (street) drops. I also expected to visit bikeparks and do 'some' pedalling locally. Glad to say it all worked out. I got a Canyon Torque with Fox perf. so it has the climb switch, i run very high pressures in both shock, fork, and tires.. Not even sure if i have tokens. I guess none in the fork, maybe some in the shock. And i have to say; even with Maxxis Minion DHR II max terra exo+ tires (most DH ready from what i can tell), it covers miles pretty impressively. For someone with my stamina. Needless to say i don't do many miles, and might get something faster-rolling in the rear. But it's exactly what i needed initially, and it'll be fine for a while to come. Now i also want a mid-low travel and a DJ, lol.

@@MILTONATOR I'm the worst to ask for advise, but i'm sure the Capra and Torque are very comparable! I thought the pedal bob would be awful just because 180mm. But on higher suspension pressure i find it very still, even when i don't use the climb switch. I don't have any reference though as it's my first MTB. And it definitely didn't feel like that with 'recommended' suspension pressures/settings. Definitely did feel sponge-ey on factory settings, but the climb switch works great. I'm on the pre-2022 version, which has a steeper headtube and slightly different linkage. I don't fancy slack bikes, so i hope to ride my 2020 Torque for a while; but it has it's 'design flaws'. Seeing as they updated the linkage for the 2022 model, i'd guess they've solved those issues! They also made the rear triangle carbon on the new version, if you're into that. For me it's another reason to cherish my 2020 lol.

Pedal bob is related to the shock tune. Low and high speed compression need to be adjusted accordingly. Too slow or too fast of low speed rebound will make it feel even worse. Not really a fault of the bike. However, I have ridden my bros Capra and I will say climbing on that bike is rough due to the long wheelbase and long travel, and the suspension is very active. I'm not sure what shock you had, but perhaps it was the shock and not the bike.
