sensei joe is my hero whether he's speaking in english, singing in japanese, or teaching earthlings japa-knees in katakana-accent english. its okay to feel sad and to struggle - it means we are alive and capable of feeling things. thank you for bringing joy to the world. please take care of yourself because you are deserving of the best care.
I don't know exactly why but the katakana accent sounds very similar to portuguese native speakers accent in english (both are very cute tbh). I hope you keep posting your japa-knees lessons cause it's not only entertaining and fun but also very easy to memorise.
We have the same issue in France. People make fun of each other when speaking English, for no reason. And the more they try, the more condescending of a response they get, from french people that in general can't even speak as well as them. Anyway, I'll still try to perfect my English accent and my Japanese in general. No matter the response from people that actually don't have an issue with me, but probably from their ability to do the same.
Definitely don't be nervous or embarrassed about speaking English, there's no one right or wrong way to sound. And anyone making the effort to learn a new language should be incredibly proud of themselves because it's hard work. 💛
I like your accent, as a spanish speaker, I find your accent easier to understand. And that inspires not native speakers to dare to speak english without shame. And gives character to the language. Wonderful job! 😉✨
I m french and this accent really help me to understand better. Plus, earing english said with the katakana accent really help to read katakana and understand what English word they are.
This earthling loves your Japa-knees lessons I truly appreciate the thoughts and effort you gave to each short videos It's funny, original, engaging & entertaining All the best sensei Joe

I just started to follow you on Instagram and I found this video. I just wish japanese people realise how much WE (Europeans) LOVE YOUR ACCENT! I feel like I'm melting everytime I listen to japanese people speaking japanese OR english! For me, japanese is the most beautiful language in the world, but when japanese people try to speak other languages ... OH MY GOD! 😱🫶🏼 it feels so warm, I can't explain it 🥹🙏🏽 so please don't be afraid! And I hope you're feeling better mate 🙏🏽 I'm glad you're getting the help you need to get out of that dark place! We love you man, so thank you for taking care of yourself 🥹🙏🏽🫶🏼 stay strong! ❤️
I'm an American who has been learning Japanese for the past 3 months. I am using many sources online to help me learn, and your short videos help me a lot with Japanese vocabulary. Each video makes me laugh whole-heartedly, which makes the learning process even more fun, so thank you very much for your content! Also in my opinion, a Japanese katakana accent is a charming thing to hear and is perfectly understandable. I would personally rather hear it than a "fluent" English accent, because it honors something unique and beautiful about that person. Let us celebrate diversity, not hide it in embarrassment.🙏
Thanks for making this video, Joe! I was honestly wondering the exact question, since I know you can flawlessly talk English if you want. I understood it makes it a lot more entertaining and I love the concept, but the other reasons were new to me and honestly kinda eye-opening. Makes perfect sense that you can express yourself in new ways as this character and I like the thought of encouraging Japanese to speak more English. Most of all I'm happy to see you found a formular that works for you and that you're in a healthier place mentally. I love your music and humor and hope you can surf high on those waves of life. I think you still got so much in you and Joe Sensei is just another milestone on the way!
I Love your Japa-kneees Lessons... I really Love to learn Japanese.. but it's Kind of hard and you make it really fun... The Point of having a hard accent while speaking english... Well I'm German... Myself and so so many other Germans have this really harsh accent when we speak english... Many people make fun of this... We're aware of that and take it with humor ourselfs... So dear Japanese earthlings.. don't be shy about your accent... Take it easy and with a Smile... The world loves your accent you're cute
What you're doing is a form of therapy for not only others, but yourself as well. I hope this journey of sharing your experience and 本音 can help you to find your truth and healthy mindset. Tough times these days. You heal the world as you heal yourself.大切な人ですよ! 頑張って下さいね!
To anyone trying to learn another language, don't worry so much about pronunciation and grammar. You can make yourself understood in a surprisingly low amount of words and as long as you try to pronunciate clearly, even if it's not entirely correct pronunciation, you will likely be understood. Of course, do try to become better at pronunciation and grammar, along with improving your vocabulary, but that is just part of the small improvements we make over time. It's never too early to start speaking with a native speaker of a language, I'd say the earlier the better.
I am grateful for your content, I admire the Japanese culture and have named my children after some game and anime characters to tie myself a bit CLOSER to Japan. ARIGATO JOE
Joe Sensei ❤️ you are amazing and your videos make people very happy. you teach so well! i wish you strength and patience with yourself in facing these dark times now. be proud that you are brave enough to take care of yourself. you got this! love & hugs from an earthling
I started to learning japanese six months ago and your videos always help me, your way to teach is so unique and at the same time, so easy to understand some things. ジョーさん、ありがとうございます!
I’m not really on instagram as much, thought about deleting it actually, but videos like yours make me keep it so I can keep up with my JAPA-KNEES lessons. You got a buddy/earthling in LA if ya need man, really, but hope behind the scenes it all gets better from here!
Joe. You already have a reels explain about this katakana accent and I loved it. I'm Brazilian and I love to hear people talking japa-knees. And Japanese people talking English with katakana accent is so much fun, hilarious I really enjoy hear this accent. Pls keep it that way. As you said. It is now part of your personality and it's make your videos so much fun. I love your work. P.s: the tree ( ki ) vídeo is the better one. Congrats
I just found you on Instagram and I've always been a huge fan of Japanese so to learn new words makes me feel so good thank you for your content/Lessons
Thank you for giving me the courage to speak English! My English is not good enough but I’ll keep trying to express my feelings without hesitation in English like this comment! I’m looking forward to watching your Japa-knees videos! From one of Japa-knees speakers ❤️
I think in North America, having an accent can actually be an asset and advantage because it sets you apart and people think you are more unique in cooking videos ppl think you're more authentic. esp when you are a youtuber. Dont be afraid of your accent! It might just be an asset
Greetings from Brazil, Joe! Please, continue to post videos using Japa-knees accent! It is very helpful to understand both of JP and EN at the same time and to have a little "taste" of an another way to speak English!
i was raised partly in sweden but mostly in new jersey. i speak armenian, swedish, and english and language is a pretty normal form of play for me. one of the biggest issues i think about learning language in the us, at least in middle school and high school, as i saw it, was that people made soooooooo much fun of each other. and comedy is okay. humor is okay, but not ridicule. hold people up. it's okay to tease and play, but hold people up. it makes language far less frightening, a lot more fun, and better for everyone
Came to your channel through your fun Japa-knees shorts, clicked on your vids because of your entertaining and genuine personality, hit subscribe because of your openness about mental health. Keep it up! Ganbatte kudesai~ Watashimo ganbarimasu. 頑張ってください。 私も頑張ります
I only discovered you maybe a month ago on Insta, and I LOVE the accent. I love the explanation too, it is rooted in being inclusive and encouraging people to participate. It's great energy, it's fun, and you lean into the silliness, too. Keep it up, Joe!
Always keep your head up high! By posting your Japa-knees videos, you've helped not only lots of fellow Japanese people but also lot more from the rest of the World. For that, THANK YOU! ❤❤❤
I subs your channel since 2016( when you first performance in Anime Weekend Atlanta) and i found that your content really entertainment and helpful at the same time ! At first I afraid to speak English in my video as well, but now even with the accent, i still made content in speaking English because somehow I feel like it a better way to me express and more confident ! KEEP UP YOUR CONTENT JOE SAN~
Joe-sensei! I hope you get through your personal challenges in life and reach a point where you're so proud of yourself and how far you've come! WE LOVE YOU! Thank you for your lessons and energy everyday.
You always seem so happy and it’s a revelation to hear you struggling. I always give myself excuses for not being creative enough because life is tough, but your example shows that it’s not an excuse, so I will be stronger. Thank you.
Love you dude and I can understand how hard life can be.... I'm struggling very badly and yet your words come to mind bro.. You know the closer you get to something, the tougher it is to see it.. So as a friend and fellow in suffering man I had to stop by and say : DUDE!!.. let's not take anything for granted.... And LET'S GOOOOO!!!!!!!! 😅😂🤣😎😏😝💯🔓🤯😁✌️ Always here for you like so many man.. cause you did it for us first.... PEACE!!
I love your videos, they are entertaining and educational. I am a low-level Japanese learner and though I have a good vocabulary, one of the things I struggle with is pronunciation, which makes me very hesitant to speak out loud. I find it useful to listen to your very-clearly-enunciated Katakana accent...I feel that I am starting to pick up the patterns and rhythm of the language which will help me with speaking. Anyway, thank you for the content. I think it is very original, energetic and uplifting.
I'm Russian, so English is not my first language, but I understand you so clearly. I love your content, I love Japanese language and your accent and energy is awesome. ❤️🔥
Joeさん. You are incredibly talented. You make some awesome music, and your lessons are wonderful. I studied Japanese in college and these are great reviews, pneumonic devices, and interesting vocabulary. Keep up the great work!
Such a great video and message! I just discovered you on IG, Joe! You are hugely entertaining. And as a former ESL teacher and polyglot, I really appreciate and respect your intention here. So cool! And I also really appreciate your vulnerability at the end. Keep up the great work!
Hello from Costa Rica 🇨🇷 sensei Joe, i love learning japa-knees with you! I saw your vids on FB and the energy you share with the world is so fun and unique, it always makes me smile when I see you. I look forward to see more of you soon! Stay strong 🙌
I am actually so unbelievably happy right now, I love your music and always have ever since I watched Naruto, I would listen to all of your songs even the ones that weren’t anime openings. Maybe it’s because of where I’m from but when I was younger suddenly I ran out of your music. It was like you just stopped making songs. I’m not sure if you did or didn’t but I’m so happy to see more of your music again. Your japa-knees videos popped up in my instagram feed and I lost it (in a good way I was overcome with joy) to see that you’re still a content creator of some sort. I just wanted to say that you’re pretty cool
Man I rediscovered you today (I used to listen to your music a lot back in the day because I was a huge anime fan when I was a teenager), and fall immediately in love with your Japanese lessons and the sensei Joe character, probably trying to seriously learn Japanese in the future or who knows lol, as a Spanish native speaker I completely get it when you say that you could express your feelings or ideas better with katakana accent, is like a middle point between your roots and the new English world where you can fluid between both, is pretty much like Spanglish to us!! Thanks for your content man, you have a new Latino living in the US follower!!
Sensei Joe i recently found your lessons and channel. They are giving me a lot of positive energy along with great tips in Japanese! Thank you so much 🙌👍
I've been following you since you were on facebook live omg that was a long time ago when i was 14. Let me tell you, I always check for your new posts back then and i learned most of my Japanese from you back in the days--specially the Katakana accent omgg (well, i just learn japanese casually and not really consistent, im not that much of a speaker yet but i really want to take it seriously). I recently found out your yt channel last week? or maybe this week and mann, you've always made my day then and im glad to find you again here, Joe-san ! Thank you so much for being here. I hope to visit Japan one day and when that time comes, I would like to be able to communicate properly ^ - ^ ) !
Thank you, Sensei! Your videos are definitely a dose of laughter everytime I watch. And the lessons are supremely helpful in introducing a way to remember or reinforcing something I've already learned in Japanese. Like you, I hope that more people won't be embarrassed or afraid to speak the languages they're learning, whatever one it might be. For those that are learning another language, just remember that even native speakers aren't going to know their own language perfectly, so it's ok to make mistakes. I look forward to more lessons, Joe Sensei and wish you the best in life!
Keep up your amazing work and thanks for sharing your feelings with us! Your videos make me and my fiancé smile everyday and we’re so excited visiting Japan in the future and be able to speak a bit of japa-kneeeeees! Much love from some earthlings ❤
I absolutely love your videos, and I have enjoyed every single one I've watched. Your accent doesn't bother me at all. I grew up in Canada and knew several Japanese exchange students in high school, so your accent isn't difficult for me to understand. Your videos are fun and entertaining, and I love that you approach the lessons with a silly energy. They're extremely uplifting. I hope that you can find the balance you seek in your life, so you can be both happy and entertaining in a way you find fulfilling. I will continue to watch all your great videos for as long as you keep putting them out.
