Thank you so much for freely sharing this information! I found it very helpful. I'm looking to start a teletherapy pediatric practice contracting with some local regional centers in Northern California. I know that this episode was posted a while ago, but I would greatly appreciate a follow-up episode going into even more detail as you suggested in this episode! I understand that you may want to cover different content and/or your listeners may not be interested in a more detailed private practice episode. Thank you so much for your content and consideration!
I am in the process of applying to SLP grad schools in NYC and one of my general goals is to have my own practice in the future so this is a very helpful video to get info early on, thank you! Also love the Chilton sweater, I’m a huge fan of Gilmore Girls 🥰
Thanks so much for uploading this! I’ve been wanting to start my own practice in FL and have been too nervous to start. But after listening to you, I feel like I’m one step closer!!
I am thinking into going for school after my bachelors for SLP I appreciate your honesty in all your videos it’s truly a gem to listen to your stories and learn from them ❤
Hi! This was so informative. Thank you! Did you end up contracting with the regional center? Also can you go more in depth about the business addresses. Since your doing in-home visits, how does that play out? Do you have to report all the addresses you go to?
Hi!! I did end up contracting with regional center, yes! And nope! You don’t list all the clients addresses. You list a business address - that can be your home, a physical office, and in some cases even a business or “office” PO Box (check to make sure you’re allowed to do that first, since there are some restrictions). You put this address on all your paperwork and documents instead of listing your clients addresses. 😊
I’m private pay only right now! I haven’t gotten into health insurance yet since it can be pretty complex. You would contact the health insurance company and say you want to be a provider and go from there, I believe.
Hi! Thank you!! 💕 I got a referral for my liability insurance from my old employer when it was required, but you can search liability insurance for SLPs to find which one you want to use. I got a referral for my lawyer from a family member. And for my business license I searched business license in my location and it popped right up! Hopefully that was helpful 😊
Thank you for the video! I would like to start a private practice here in NC. I have 22 years of experience, both working with adults and kids, as a bilingual SLP. I also hold a PhD in Speech Pathology. You mentioned that you first contacted a lawyer to take care of a lot of the initial paperwork to launch your business. May I ask how much the lawyer fees costed you to do that? I think that is a great recommendation , but I have no idea what attorneys charge for those services. Also, is there a certain kind of lawyer that you recommend hiring? I have some attorney friends, but I do not think that any of them do work related to starting up a business. I really appreciate your time and willingness to help others start their businesses. I wish you the best of luck with your practice! Congrats! Derek Headley, PhD CCC-SLP
Hi, no problem! My lawyer ended up charging around 2.5k for all the initial paperwork in CA. And I would recommend hiring a corporate lawyer that specializes in forming businesses in your state. I hope this was helpful! 😊
Hi guys! Love the podcast... I am about to start my slpa schooling and I'm so excited! It is an associates program so I was wondering if you had any recommendations for jobs (currently a nanny) or volunteer opportunities to do while in school? Just looking for extra experience, especially since I will just have an associate's... Thanks!
I think being a nanny is great! Especially if you want to work with children. You could also work at a daycare or a preschool to get involved with kiddos. Those are all great opportunities to learn!
Can you be your own accountant? I’ve worked for businesses for several years and I know generally how to do basic accounting so I’m wondering if I could just do that.
Hi I hope that u are doing well I really like ur content and keep going I have question is SLP the same as ORTOPHONY or there's a differences between them??
Hello! Big congratulations!! I was wondering what grad school you attended? Did it equip you for private practice? Like did it have business classes? I’m a 3rd year in undergrad and found out the grad program has little to no focus on starting a private practice.
Hi! Thank you!! I went to Cal State San Marcos. It did not have very much business classes. Honestly, I think that is something all SLP grad schools need to add to their curriculum. It was a lot of researching on my own. 😊
Hi, they can they just have to be really careful about not giving any preferential treatment to the friend or family member. Because of this, some SLPs may decide to avoid the situation all together.
