Why I still use my GH5 in 2024. This camera is like an old shoe to me. Comfortable, durable and ready for anything. My main goal is to inspire you to fall in love with your camera. I use my gh5 for basically everything. Even if it's not the main camera I have it in my bag as a backup just in case.

In my opinion, nothing justifies upgrading a camera like the GH5. I have been a producer and director of documentaries for television in Spain for more than twenty years and I continue to use this camera in my new productions. I also have a blackmagic 4k with double iso and a GH6 and frankly my intention is to amortize these cameras for many more years. As time goes by, I learn more about them and I never stop getting the most out of them, achieving spectacular results. The capitalist system only wants you to consume compulsively even if it is not really necessary. Break the chains and enjoy your equipment until it stops working. It is my humble suggestion. Greetings from Spain. .

You know how songwriters are able to help us express how we feel about life in ways that we can't? You for reals just put into words why I love my GH5 and struggle to find a reason to upgrade. Even with my S1 and all its full frame yumminess, I still just go back to my GH5 and feel this strange non-human love for it. And if you're telling me all of those incredible shots you just shared were from your GH5 and the Sigma 30mm (and your clearly brilliant colorist friend), then I will simply stop my unending nerd quest to find a reason to get a GH7 or S5ii and stick with what I have and love because I clearly have SO much more room to grow with this camera.

While everyone praised GH5 when in full manual setup, literally on one ever mentioned that it DOES DELIVER in point & shoot situation as well. I once happened to be suddenly in an event photography work with only my GH5 and 2 batteries. That's all I have at the moment, and I MUST start shooting right away! To make the matter worse since I had absolutely NO CONTROL of the situation, I had no choice but set it in Program mode, auto ISO, start praying, and enter the battle field... When it's over I went home with about 900 shots and a few video clips in my camera. Apart from a few missed shots in low light (when the AF totally got lost 😆) the rest was totally acceptable / useable. In the end everyone - me included - is happy with the result. Bought mine secondhand for only $500, and that's the best investment ever for me.😄 This probably is going to be my workhorse for years to come.

I use the S5 as my main camera, and I felt like I wanted a back up so I found a gh5 in ebay for $475, and I have to say it's incredible. As long as you don't rely on autofocus this is a top-notch creative tool. And actually the S5 and the gh5 are almost the exact same size. But I can put tiny lenses on the gh5 and just run around like I have a toy that can make HBO worthy art. I work pretty much all the time with vintage lenses and anamorphic lenses, so for me, these two cameras are perfect. And for the price, there's no comparison to anything else. Maybe the black magic 6K Pro since it's only 1500 now, but other than that, nothing compares to what I have.

I love this! Yes, so cheap and packs a punch! Curious what vintage lenses have you've liked using? Agreed about the focus haha, I've only ever used manual with focus peaking.

@@micah_hamilton I have three Minolta lenses. A 28mm telesor f/2.8 and two Rokkor lenses... 35mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.4. All incredible lenses. And since they're all Minolta, they match really well. Other than that, I have 2 sirui anamorphic lenses. 35mm and 75mm, both f/1.8 and both APSC. GREAT lenses.

I've been in the film and television industry for over twenty years and have never needed autofocus. For me that doesn't make a huge difference to my workflow, much less justify buying a new camera; but I understand that the new generations find it essential for their work.

Still totally in love with my GH5, too. It's powerful enough to grow into as a starting filmmaker, and I'm yet to find its limits. All the shorts on my channel were shot with it, and I just used it for pick-ups on my last shoot to match the Komodo-X in extreme low light, and it worked great. So many pixel-peepers on this platform telling you what you can't do with gear, but I say ignore that shit and go for it. Also, keep up the good vibes. Subscribed~

Loved your video, totally agree on the GH5 being all you really need. I own 3 GH5 II cameras for almost 3 years, love the minor upgrades it has over the original such as 4K60 10-bit internally. I had the GH5, GH5S and GH4 over the years. I will likely upgrade to 3 GH7 cameras in 2 years when it's cheaper (mainly for 4K120). Don't need ProRes or any of that when the LongGOP profile is all you need as it preserves noise for a noise profile in Neat Video quite well. Take a look at my latest video at the Dallas Zoo. I own all f/0.95 Voigtländer lenses for MFT. It's glorious and cinematic, especially with the otters at the end. The typical FX3 shooter can't compete with that. All handheld. Definitely master your camera and have fun! MFT shooter for 10 years. Best format for video!

Miss my GH5II. It was fun but too bulky for an Asian like me. I still love the lenses though as they are all small. Wish lumix could produce similar GH5 but smaller in size.😊

I forgot...I agree with you on the comfort of use...personally the GH5 is a camera that I intuitively integrate into my workflow and that is essential to concentrate on what I am filming, integrating myself into the creative process without being think about something other than shooting with my camera.

Your post in the GH5 group sent me here. STUNNING image quality! Some of the best I've ever seen from a GH5, honestly. I still use mine as a B-cam to my GH6, but I do love what the Ronin 4D does. Might upgrade to that cam as well. #Subscribed

@@micah_hamilton that's also an amazing cam. I was also thinking of getting that as a replacement for my GH6 TBH. As much as I love my GH5/6 and the MFT format, I do recognize the superior low light performance of full frame and super 35 sensors. I'm getting tired of applying noise reduction all the time LMAO

Great video on the gh5, btw on the other cameras I respect the FX3, but a little overpriced in my opinion, you can get similar results with a cheaper S5ll or just get the more expensive and reliable Komodo if that's the way you want to go. :)

Hey Micah. I chanced upon your RU-vid Page and website when your post appeared on my Facebook Timeline. I'm glad I clicked in. Beautiful work indeed! I have a question about settings on your GH5.....specifically FPS and variable frame rates. Do you have a preferred frame rate which you find will be sufficient to slow down and still retain quality? i.e. When shooting at 180fps, there is scope to go super slow but there is more compression and artifacts present with the lower bit rate at that speed (I think).... So I'm wondering if you shoot slower than 60fps with Variable Frame Rate options and if so, how slow (fast) do you go?..... How many FPS do you find are sufficient to slow down your footage (to get your amazing results), without going all the way to 180fps and seeing digital artifacts? I'm guessing that each shoot and each shot will dictate different settings choices for you....but I'm wondering if you have a preferred setting, so that you can still push the images in grading to get your lovely results. I hope that my question is clear enough! Thanks in advance. Now....I'm off to have a look at your work on your website. BTW, I'm in Ireland, so while I use PAL 25p and its variants, I'm aware that you are 30p and that the VFR options as variants of the 25p system will be slightly different. I'm just looking for ballpark frame rates that you use to achieve your results. Loving the lighting and framing and grading too.
