Why I Still Use Etsy + Left Squarespace

It's fitting that on the same day I filmed a video praising Etsy's features, they sent out an email announcing fee increases. But, I'm not running from the platform. Obviously, no one wants to give up more of their money, but the benefits to my customers and my business are still worth the price, for now.
Are you scared of the fee changes? Just starting to sell your art online, or wondering if now is the time to leave Etsy? Selling online is not a one size fits all formula. Every platform has its mix of pros and cons. In your research, you will find reasons to host your online store on Squarespace, Shopify, and others. There are plenty of videos urging you to stay away from Etsy, so I'm here to add the story of leaving my Squarespace store to join Etsy and how it changed my online sales for the better.

You've probably heard the argument that by selling on Etsy, when someone asks "Where did you get that?" the buyer will respond "It's from Etsy," instead of your shop name, so you're not retaining or gaining customers. Here's a great comment from my Instagram that shows Etsy actually leading to a social media follower and repeat supporter: "I'm a customer of yours and I found you on Etsy just doing a random search one day, not sure what year, but I think either 2020 or early 2021. I've bought many things from you (that I love!) I followed you on here after discovering you there. I would never have known about you had you not been on Etsy, and what you said about the forum is exactly what I love! I hate when my favorite artists leave etsy because honestly I end up forgetting about them after a while! I'm always on there checking for new fun listings. Great video Stephanie! I love your pottery I'm a big fan"

Great video! I think it’s also fair to say that remitting sales tax is also a reason to keep Etsy. While there’s definitely reasons I don’t like Etsy, it is the only platform I’ve found that collects AND remits sales tax for domestic and international sales, including VAT. That’s a huge time saver that platforms like Shopify can’t provide yet. So nice the you included a spreadsheet as well!

Yes! Ave Rivera goes over the tax aspect in her video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NZry1gFInKs.html If you have your own website it's likely you don't make enough sales in most states to even charge sales tax, but it's nice to not even have to think about it with Etsy.

As an accounting professional, I wish Etsy provided a way to not charge sales tax to buyers who use those specific products in their own goods for resale, or cost of goods sold items. Yes, the artist can take that tax as a credit on their next sales tax return but it would be nice to not have to pay it & track it. It looks like Etsy still has a wholesale program - but is that for finished goods only?

Interesting dilemma I've never had to face! I rarely shop the supply side of Etsy, so I'm honestly not familiar. I know that the few wholesale customers I do have are all managed off of Etsy. Seems like Etsy would be big enough for you to file a tax exempt form, but wonder how they'd ensure you weren't using it on personal purchases.

@@firedfigments You mean like a normal wholesale business?? Etsy ain’t normal, lol. I’ve even got in touch with them to inquire about resale certificate submission. I didn’t expect a good answer but thought if enough people ask over time, changes might come. I’m very disappointed to learn (from you & others) how bad their support of sellers is. Maybe the CEO can sell a yacht or 3rd vacation home and hire some developers and support staff. 🤦🏻‍♀️
