Rikki, you are absolutely the reason I started playing drums when I was 13 yrs old. Nothing but a good time was just released, and I LOVED those DW drums. I've lusted after, but never owned a DW kit. I ended up with a Yamaha kit recently, and I am 100% blown away by the quality and sound! Now you're with Yamaha! Love it!! Keep kicking ass Rikki!!
Hey I have a question! How did you first try out the drums? I’m looking into trying the drums, but I don’t want to own a drum kit or spend a lot of money. Do you have any suggestions?
I played on cruise to the edge 2013 , for some reason your old DW kit was there and us artists were signing it... DW kit on the boat , great drums but not for me... Yamaha all day long brother!! Love your vibe and playing, good luck to you.... 🙏🙏🙏 Oh .... been listening to Flesh and blood again, fucking great record...🙏🙏🙏
Off topic but ... I understand you are a vegan or a vegetarian .. I'd like to be able to do that ... I live alone and cook for myself ... and blah x 3 ... is there a book or something man ..?
I use the bass drum Tom Mount to mic the bass from the inside. Works really well for me.. with my Sennheiser bass mic 902e, it gives a nice deep tone with lots of clicks. I no longer need 2 mics for the kick.. Give it a try, you might like it
Great choice. I remember hearing the great Paul Leim saying that a big reason he plays Yamaha is because of their international footprint and reach. He can be any where in the world and still be near the support he needed from Yamaha.
Welcome to the World of the Best Drums and Hardware on the Planet, at any price point. Don't get me started on the longevity and quality of their Bass Drum Pedals.
Those drums sound killer! I vote for a Rikki Rockett signature Yamaha snare drum. Is there any particular reason that you chose the floor tom sizes that you did? That was a fantastic explanation why you chose the kit! I can’t wait to hear the drums in your next video.🤘
Hey Rikki, you have chosen WISELY! I love Yamaha drums and hardware. I have a little Stage Custom Birch bop kit for smaller gigs, and honestly, I absolutely LOVE it. What's meant to be a mid tier kit, it's got all the check boxes of pro level drums. (The snare is a Tama 12 x 5 han hammered steel though) The little 18" kick with a mic in shocks people that something that small can sound so punchy! Toms have the right amount of decay and tone. On the ship I worked at for 5 years, all Yamahas. Maple/Birch/Oak customs all round. I miss them drums... ps my main kit is a Tama Starclassic Maple, which I also love... But Yamaha are fantastic.
Everybody has their personal experiences. I have had a Birch Custom Absolute, Tour custom {Antong Fig version}, Beech Custom Absolute, Maple Custom Absolute drum kits and several Maple Custom snares. All good. But now I own three different PDP kits, all maple and they sound better live and in the studio to my ears. Yamaha still makes the best and most efficient hardware. 2 cents
Yamaha is an amazing company - drums , keyboards , guitars , wave runners , boats , golf carts , motorcycles the stuff is the best also - cool Rikki good choice going with yamaha -
Have you noticed DW drums, their maple thin shelled bass drums sound weak compared to Yamaha. Especially the live custom hybrid? I will probably sell the DW for one of these kits in a year or 2. However the DW Collectors concrete snare 14 X 5.5 with Evans HD Dry is a beast. Trying to have a snare drum with this sound and drum set. DW Concrete snare sounds closest according to Memphis Drumshop test. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bnxr8-SAr8c.html
Wow first time I ever heard someone say they gave up their 5000 🤯 I've been playing since 93 worked a better part of my life for DW hardware and eventually DW kit I thought... I learned in one your videos DW had been purchased by Roland I've had one for a bit not a bad company that being said... I didn't grow up with your music but I'm familiar with how long you've been with DW that says a lot!!! Video was great thanks for reminding me the are other great drum makers!!!
Dude, I love how. you do your videos. and I am going to say what we are all thinking here that the POISON DRUMMER is the best drummer in the world. Its that simple that is all for now just wanted to let you know that 😇🤠
Carter Beauford one of my favorite Yamaha signature players Dudes a beast! Shannon from godsmack plays Yamaha too He’s got some great videos on RU-vid 👍
Tommy has been with Yamaha for years one of my favorite drummers and you too dut I'm a Tama guy my best kit is lol art star 24 by 16 bass drum big toms 8 of them 2 floors need to go small like A E KIT Good or BAD
Love your videos...especially the tour videos! I have a Gretsch kit I bought when I was 17. Got it from Drum HQ in St. Louis (RIP). That was 1984 I think and they are still in great shape. Harvey Mason used them in a clinic. After watching your video, I think I may need to sell them and get some Yamaha gear. Looks like great stuff!
I have always used Yamaha since the 80s. The oak drums sound great but I have a birch set and a mahogany set. I also have the same pedals. The best pedal I have ever tried.
I'm still rolling on a trashcan Tama Rockstar kit from the 90's. Wanted to get a Rockett kit, but whew $$$. That being said, you don't see too many rock drummers with Yamaha. I know they make excellent drums. Glad to see you breaking out of the mold. It'll be interesting to hear how the 14/16 floors sound vs. the 16/18.
Hi, I’m OrkDrum. Followed you and the guys since the 80s. You’re one of the musicians I learned my drumming from. Great to hear some drum chat. Amazing Yamaha kit! I’d love to do a drum jam online video, if you’re ever up for it and have enough time. Cheers Rikki 🥁
Not only are you a fantastic drummer, but you seem so down-to-earth, and you're extremely knowledgeable. Great choice in drums! I'm sure being with Yamaha gives you better international support for your gear as well. The tom mount system is really the best...especially for fine adjustments.
If I could change kits every time I played, I would. Love it! If you get a chance to do a video on all your vintage kits, would love to see that. Or even a video of all the old Poison kits would be interesting and fun. Thanks for sharing!
Ya know with the head /shell combo you have got going on those drums are going to sound better being played hard , and will sing better at higher force hits , I’m big on the Keller shells although they won’t record as good , Yamaha are massively underrated drum shells, especially when Sakai used to make their shells, but it’s almost like you can also hear the trapped air like it doesn’t escape fast enough
Yamaha, IMO has (far and away) The best and most elegant and logical hardware. The hex rods are much better than 12mm L-arms or 7/8" tube arms. Drums go back EXACTLY where they were, no slipping, and the setup isn't overwhelmed with hardware. Yamaha proved in the 70's that nodal mounting is both effective and resonant. They sing better than shells with giant turret lugs. Yamaha engineering is top notch.
I just got my LCHO the other day, in the blue finish. Get to set them up for the first time today. I tuned them up last night and god DAMN!!! 22x16, 22x18, 8,10,12,14,16,18
Regarding harware, there's a good reason why their cymbal and tom mountng hardware has not changed since the 80's (not including the YESS mounts other then in some minor cosmetics) is because they got it bang on back then! What's not broken doesn't need to be fixed!
Dood! Let's see that drum collection! I never really payed much attention to Yamaha either but got a 80's recording custom set last year. They live up to the hype! Yamaha makes nice stuff! Funny enough I've always owned Yamaha dirt bikes lol
Music touring is an unique engagement, especially with the right sonic gear, changing climate and durability. I use to be a roadie for a known drummer, before jumping into music performance/recording myself (bass, synthesisers). Have fun with the new gear on the road this year! 🎶
I just starting playing drums 2 weeks ago, cannot wait until i get enough experience to begin learning some of these poison songs. Keep up the Vlogs Rikki i love seeing all the behind the scenes stuff.
I love my two 20s (14 rack, 16 floor) and thinking about building out a kit w two 18s. I love the feel of two kicks and the footprint / hauling it isn’t super bad. Love the channel!
Just FYI, I play one rack tom, which I mount my TH904A holder, and mount my ride cymbal on a short boom in one of the unused holes. It places my ride right where I want it, it looks good, and it's less hardware to schlepp.
Hi Rikki - I just posted a video on my youtube channel showing how I made a sign hanging frame for the back of the Rockett Drum Works sign I got from you. It's called "Making a Rockett Drum Works sign hanging frame" if you want to check it out. Also mentioned your youtube channels and tagged them in the video description. Thanks again for the sign!
BAD ASS kit, Rikki!! Been a huge fan since Cat Dragged In. Got my nickname ( "CC" ) from walking around playing air-guitar from that album, although I am a drummer! I had my leg amputated due to an infection, but I still play occasionally. I use a double pedal and play the kick with my left foot. I'll take your old kit, man!!!!! lol You keep rockin' and I'll keep rollin' (in my WHEELCHAIR!!!!!) jeez I crack myself up...
Excellent choice! Watching the video I was tickled to hear you mention Rogers, Rikki. I presently cycle between my 66 Rogers, my 99 Keller DW, and I also have a Sakae Almighty Birch. My actual name is Jim Killian on the profile. Thanks for the gear update.
I really like your new drum set. I don't know anything about drum's, lol but you make it very interesting. I've missed alot of your video's, gotta catch up soon. Have a great day Rikki!
Just curious.... Do you still have all your old kits? Like from videos and previous tours? Say, the kit from Cry Tough , I want action, Nothin But A Good Time, etc. You rock Rikki. 🤘
Just put in an order through a Yamaha rep for these in the Natural finish being they were out of stock everywhere (3 month wait). This makes me even more exited!
Rikki, I fell in love with Yamaha hardware when I first started drumming. Straight cymbal stands, boom stands they are the best! I love the ergo and detail in them. Also, in a great price range. 😊🤟🥁
Love this Rikki !! Can’t wait to see the video break down on the pedal!! Like you, I am also a drummer who loves to play songs You nailed it right there !!! Cheers Rikki!!
Very cool drum kit. Sounds and looks great. I currently play a Crush drum kit which I love and it's very punchy. But I do miss my Yamaha stage custom. That was a great kit also
Yamaha drums are amazing. Problem is unless you’re endorsed its almost impossible to find add one, or varying sizes or finishes. Their Oak customs and hybrids sound awesome. But the availability makes them really hard to convert drummers to. I would play Yamaha as a runner up to Tama if they just had more available in more options.
Hands down one of the most underrated drummers out there. #facts And could be one of the most knowledgeable drummers out there on how gear actually works.
@@bartvanbemmel9123 Ya this is totally true! I remember, stumbling across his music when I was a teen in the 2000's and going to my drum teacher and saying "dude! Rikki Rockett!" He just laughed and said "Ya, dude flys under the radar but he's got serious chops!" I actually started using the Vater Bottle Rocketts because of it, I wish Vater still made em because they were my favorite stick I've ever used besides the Regal Tip Quantum Series.
@@jeremyanderson2246 Exactly. Just because he wore some make-up in the 80’s he should somehow be dismissed. Same with CC. You think you an outplay CC? Would love to see. I think Rikki should have a podcast. I bet tons of drummers go to him because of his knowledge.
Ya know Yamaha has always made a respectable top tier product, way too much to list on how good they are. BUT! lol I just can't get past the China thing... And re: China there's just beyond way too much to list on that subject.
I wish you would change your name to Rikki Rockett (not TPD) everybody knows you as Rikki. I was not a Poison fan when you guys came out, but I always thought you and C.C. were good musicians. What you were doing, you've made playing the drums look easy to play. Just like GnR and Kiss drummer, but playing what looks easy is not. I'm a guitarist, but I play drums and bass...My one-man band Utube channel, but switched to just playing an acoustic guitar to go play gigs. I never thought of Yamaha drums as crap, they were more for like the jazz, maybe blues guys. Those drums sound amazing, and the hardware looks like quality stuff. I love DW5000's, my drummer I use to play with sold me his for $35, and before I even learned how to play the drums in 2013 I sold them for like $100. But he got DW9000's, and I got behind his kit and started playing the middle to Seek and Destroy, and those DW9000's were even BETTER, they made playing his DW kit even that much easier. He told me later that night he thought about taking up the guitar because my drumming might had being over the top that night. LOL. And I hadn't even learned how to play the drums at the time. That had to of been about 2008. And I started playing drums in 2013, Ac/Dc's Highway to Hell was the first song I learned. But Utube has blocked that video. It's still there but it's blocked. Try the DW9000's even though I saw what you had, I don't think you would ever go back, they were fast pedals the way he had them set up, We played Thrash Metal from the 80s, covers, whatever I would want to play we played. Rock, Classic Rock, but mostly Slayer, Maiden, Sabbath, Megadeth, and Metallica.
I do not get the layer of phenolic in the oak. I assume this make them less loud. I would love to hear you on a comparison between a first gen oak kit vs the hybrid oak with phenolic.
You're not the only one who switched from DW to Yamaha. Gary Novak & Tommy Igoe are former DW endorsers that switched to Yamaha. Gary Novak fell in love with the Absolute Hybrids & Tommy Igoe had positive remarks on the Stage Custom Birch
@@ThePoisonDrummer last time I saw Gary Novak on RU-vid he was playing Yamaha Absolute Hybrids. Anyways, great choice!! Yamaha makes amazing drums. If ever you get the chance. You may want to try the Pheonix PHX drums. Killer set of drums
Awesome I have a Yamaha stage custom honey Amber birch with all Yamaha hardware. Mine tuned up in about 10 minutes for the whole kit. I bought mine 3 months ago. Everything feels and plays solid. I added the 10 inch tom and an extra 16 inch floor tom. The only thing I don't have is the double base pedals.
I have owned Yamaha and they're fantastic in every way. I've been playing dw drums for the past 15 years and I am a firm believer that dw is still the best made drums money can buy but if I didn't play dw then Yamaha would definitely be my second choice. To each their own and all top manufacturers make great drums.
It amazes me what artists say about the reasons why they switched to a new company. I’ve heard all the same stuff said about DW . To me you can’t go wrong with any of the big name companies, they all make great drums.
