*Special thanks to Scott Burdick for filming this lecture*
Dr. Richard Carrier flew in from California to lecture the UNCG Atheists, Agnostics, and Skeptics on the historicity of Christ. The historicity of Christ has appeared in the public consciousness over the last few years because of such individuals such as Robert Price and Dr. Carrier. This topic deals with the analysis of historical data to determine if Jesus existed as an actual person.

I attended a parochial school starting in 1931. At around 7 or 8 I began to doubt the bible stories.My parents took us kids to the Pittsburgh zoo. I could plainly see that the Ark story was just that, a story. Also I recall that the story of Abraham struck me as ridiculous. But I didn't really split from the church until my Navy days in the Pacific in WW 2. I'm a bookworm & our ship was low on books. So I read the bible. That cured me. Never did reunite with mother church. I'm at peace with my disbelief. Been 'ready to go' for over 5 years now. To rejoin the stardust from which all life forms emanate wherever life exists. How about you ?-

He wasn’t born on 25 December and no date is given anywhere. It was impossible for the Magi and shepherds to have been there on the same night e.g. the Magi followed a star that only appeared upon his birth. The two gospel accounts of his birth conflict - how? The only witnesses were his parents. Who delivered him? The Basilica of the Nativity was apparently built on the site of the stable. How did they know over 35 years later, where he was born? It would have been developed. Downstairs you can kiss the exact spot where was born……how can they prove that?! The four Gospels were not written by the names given to them and written forty or fifty years after his supposed death. Why take so long to record such a famous person? Emperor Constantine created Christianity by issuing an Edict of Milan in 313 and proclaimed himself to be one. It was created to subdue great civil unrest to give the Jews somebody to believe in. There are other examples of the story we are given that just don’t make sense.

When people are defending the supposed "historical" existence of jesus they are really only defending the brand name of jesus and the agenda that it represents.

I think the acceptance of the idea that Jesus never existed is relatively new. I remember atheist school teachers who didn't believe in Christianity at all claiming that it was irrefutable that Jesus existed or that the evidence for Jesus existing was as strong as for any other figure in history and far stronger than that for Homer or Socrates. At least I had atheist teachers.
@HeroQuestFans
@HeroQuestFans 5 лет назад
people who say such things are what we call "fundy atheists." what "agenda"? So atheist scholars are trying to somehow prop up the theological concerns of the Catholic (or Protestant or Orthodox) churches? Look at someone like Bart Ehrman, how is he having best selling books where he denounces, rejects, and does his best to "debunk" all of the cherished traditional Christian beliefs... that somehow means by his saying Jesus at existed... that's because he's a dishonest plant bribed to lie for religion? That makes no sense. and he's not alone. there are legions of non-Christian scholars in academia. but because TWO guys (a retired comic book fan and a perpetually unemployed blogger) disagree, suddenly historical Jesus research is "in crises" and they're declaring victory? THAT my friend, is the fairy tale here. Besides, even if you somehow thought Jesus was the most evil man in history and everything he said and did has lead to misery and made the world worse off... would that mean we could declare he didn't exist? First off, doing so wouldn't make it so, second, that would be a lie. Look at someone like Karl Marx, or Muhammad... do we care so little about truth and are so driven by ideology that we would honestly consider erasing them from history to somehow make up for the harm that's been done in their name? so spare me this broken line of argument. facts don't care about your feelings, OR the political implications. historyforatheists.com

@@HeroQuestFans Actually, I think the evidence for the existence of Muhammad is even sketchier than the evidence for Jesus. Some Jesus Never Existed folks just say that Muhammad existed because they have never looked into it. As to Marx, that is different.

@@gregorykrajeski6255 hey, we've got a live one here! So you are consistent in rejecting history when it comes to religious founders. so other than Robert Spencer (who is not a historical scholar), who says Muhammad wasn't historical? How is Marx "different"? The same arguments made to support Mythicism can be used to justify Marx Mythicism. communism needed a sagely founder to justify all of the evil things they did for a century and they all read him differently. oh but because he lived in the modern period, things like photographs and handwriting can't be faked... I see. but you forget.. he's a figure we don't like, he set things in motion we disagree with a century or more later... so why not declare him myth, legend? If I pick a figure from antiquity that was worshiped as a miraculous god and say "Caesar" you'll say he was real because of the buildings and coins and statues (as if mythical gods can't have these things).

I was 10 when I was made to go into catechism. Despite the fact my grandfather and mother are atheists, my grandmother wasn’t and she forced me to go because it would be a shame if I didn’t go. I recall asking in classes to the priest if adam and eve had their bellybuttons, since they were made from clay and a rib, instead of being born. The priest was so angry he demanded to see my parents. Granny arrived and pleaded him for me to not be thrown out of catechism. Needless to say, once I was done with it, I decided to never go to church anymore. Shortly after I no longer believed any god and by 12 in school I became fascinated with science, then biology, I even wanted to become a scientist at some point, but life sometimes go in other pathways and thus I became an MD. Thanks1, Catholic Church, for not answering my doubts and just forcing me to swallow your truth. I’d never be who I am today if it wasn’t for the bigotry and lies of the church. Atheist, thanks God

Jesus existed and probably still existed on Earth as a "human in disguised". You these Atheists PHDs are looking for Jesus in history books. Of course he is not in those history books that chronicled about the activities of Empires and Kingdoms.How you come across in history books narrating the Kings and Queens, Emperors and Emperors going to their temple to pray? No! because those historians don't gave a hoot about religions activities specially those outside the realm of the Sovereigns. Why do you think there is a separate of State and Church (religion) today? But in the Bible, which is also a history Book, right? is full of Jesus telling the people what he did and did not do. @@Kinesiology411

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between fantasy and fairy tales, between myths and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his ignorance. This is the dimension of imagination, gullibility and delusion. It is an area which we call the RELIGIOUS ZONE

There is a woman named Nanci Danison, who had an NDE. She was a Catholic at the time. During the NDE she met the "Light," which most everyone experiences when dying. While there she asked the Light about the history of religions on Earth. It showed her a documentary on the spot of just all that. But then there was a problem. There was no Moses, no miracles, no sermon on the Mount. NONE of any of the Bible stories, zero. She was basically shown there never was a man named Jesus, he never existed. What she saw was the birth of religions based on SUPERSTITIONS, and the evolutions of those into full blow dogmatic religions. This really disturbed her, that what the Church taught her was all fair tales. She did see that some religions taught peace and Love, but very few. She grew angry and yelled "someone ought to tell those people "down there" that the whole thing was made up. Instantly she was back in her body and eventually wrote a book called "Backward Beliefs." Religious people hate her book and I don't think it sold very well, but I liked it, bught it, read it and it just confirmed for me what I thought when I was 8 years old, that the Bible is all fiction and stories. Now, just because Jesus never existed, doesn't mean there isn't spirituality. I grew up in the 70's when all of us became seekers after truth. My parents had paranormal experiences and so did I. I asked my 90 year old Mom to come see me when she died and and she agreed. The morning of her death, I was in light dream state and a white mist drifted through my bedroom, and I instinctively asked it "did you have a good life," and it said "yes." It was her. When I got up my wife said my Mom passed and I said "I KNOW." Physics shows us that we are no more than energy beings in bodies that seem solid but are mostly empty space. There is a consciousness that is in everyone and everything, and we are all part of it, our consciousness is IT and IT is US. Budhism is not a religion, but is a science of MIND, there is no "god" in it,though alot of little gods that are symbolic of different things to Humanity. They are closer to whats real, than the bible. The bible has been translated and retranslated, and edited and books tossed out to appease different royalties and powers of different eras, that its basically a lot of words all mixed up in plagarism and superstition. The NDE accounts are good to read, but then there are christians faking stories to prove their religious beliefs, so there are false stories out there. When you die, sometimes people meet religious icons, but this is done to calm them and give them peace during the transition. The best NDE's are from people who had no religious beliefs, and their experiences are often mind blowing trips into the Universes and realities we know little about. One of the best accounts is the experience of Mellen Thomas Benedict. He was met with religious images and asked the "Light" to please stop it and that he did not believe in any of that stuff. It stopped and what happened after that was so beautiful and inspiring: schmidtpetersen.dk/2021/01/near-death-experience-story-of-mellen-thomas-benedict/

Pat Kelly 1. "If you can't answer the simple question I posed " what question was that? 2. If Jesus is a myth, prove it. Show me the writings of a Roman historian that states Jesus is a myth. Here is proof from a Roman historian that Jesus did exist: And now Caesar, upon hearing the death of Festus, sent Albinus into Judea, as procurator. But the king deprived Joseph of the high priesthood, and bestowed the succession to that dignity on the son of Ananus, who was also himself called Ananus... Festus was now dead, and Albinus was but upon the road; so he assembled the sanhedrin of judges, and brought before them the brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, whose name was James, and some others; and when he had formed an accusation against them as breakers of the law, he delivered them to be stoned. 3. "You suggest that I should have myself checked out because I don't pray to imaginary spirits" you should have yourself checked out because of inane babbling. 4 I don't care if you don't believe. Why should I prove any god is real to you?

I continuously asked questions and looked for explanations on the horror but no one was prepared to listen to what a 12 year old brat needed to know. It was then I began to resist going to church, how could this God all knowing and loving allow that to happen whose son Jesus , we were told was King of the Jews.....still waiting for answers at 71. 😢

We are storytellers by nature. That is a function of the mind to use imagination as a means of making sense of the vast universe in which we live. Stories can serve as metaphors for understanding ourselves and world. Many of our stories have archetypal characters to represent the sum of who we imagine and/or desire ourselves to be. These archetypes as Sage, Scholar, Warrior, King, Lover, and so forth, are quintessential qualities that we seek to embody, and as such, we often travel far and wide to find a mentor who fits the description of what we are consciously or subconsciously looking to discover about ourselves. That is how the guru/disciple; teacher/student, coach/player, etc. relationships begin. Oftentimes, these relationships are based on fiction made to appear real through consensus and, over time, become our core beliefs. These core beliefs serve many functions, and not the least, to establish a moral basis for communities to prosper and to grow. At some point, it inevitably falls apart, and we make up stories about devils, and angles, good and evil, heaven and hell, and it is here where we either dive completely in or otherwise walk away as yet another set of measurable beliefs called science and technology take hold. Still, no matter the strength of our prayers, an asteroid or nuclear weapon will blow all our made-up stories to kingdom come. The narrative ends with, only those who share my core belief will be saved. When the here and now is not enough, the hereafter becomes the better game.

Let's say you have the most important news ever, the story of Jesus. In uncertain times when you could die early in any number of ways like disease, war and such, would you write it down then and there or leave it till you will, if you survive, be a doddery old man with a poor memory, and no eye witnesses to back up your story? That is the story of the gospels, written 50-90 years after Jesus. Illiteracy is not an excuse since a scribe could have written something down for you for a pittance.
@LightningSonic
@LightningSonic 9 лет назад
+Michael Hill Why should they write everything down right after Jesus' ascension? I don't think you understand much of what Jesus' disciples actually believed. They probably thought Jesus' return was going to be in their lifetime. Besides, what's up your dating the gospels 50-90 years after Jesus' death? That's ridiculous. Bart Ehrman has stated before that he believed them to be 35-60 years after Jesus. And it goes without saying that he's extremely liberal. Many scholars date them much earlier.
@michaelhill5272
@michaelhill5272 9 лет назад
+M. Aaron . Did Jesus ascend? We know the last 12 verses of Mark, on which Matthew and Luke (and Acts) are based are known fakes. Google it. The last verse of John says Jesus lived a long life, before presumably dying a human death, which some believe was in India (read Jesus in India). John was written late enough that it could have been after such a death. This was a time when the average age before death was 30 so best to write things down quickly. Why would anyone delay since such writings could be used for the early church rather than hearsay which quickly becomes distorted. If you have read Ehrman, you know that even gospel writings were distorted by people with agendas. We have no evidence when the gospels were written down. We have a few verses from 125 AD, which could have even been in a letter and later put into John. There are a few other verses in the second century and suddenly come the third century, we have whole books turn up, as if this was when they were written. Bart Ehrman BELIEVES is not evidence. Many scholars? Names and their evidence? Jesus came to Earth with a message, was said to be literate at the age of 12, but left nothing behind. Why is that? Where is the evidence that he even existed? Jesus and his disciples expected his return to be imminent according to the bible but nearly 2,000 years later we know that was all lies.
@karenhenderson2615
@karenhenderson2615 8 лет назад
+M. Aaron Many scholars date them much later but that is irrelevant. Mans memory is notoriously fallible so even something written down 35 to 60 years (your timelines) after his death and the death of the disciples cannot be used as a true story as so open to the authors writing what they want as no one to correct them. There were i believe 16 well known scribes who we have copies of their works. They operated in Jesus` time and area but never mention him. Thats a deal breaker for me. Nothing was written down by anyone about Jesus whilst he lived or indeed immediately afterwards.

Even if you could not write, a scribe could do it for you for a pittance. More importantly, you could get witnesses to what you write too, to write their backup accounts. But the gospels were written long after witnesses could corroborate or deny them, and Matthew and Luke were heavily based on Mark with the phoney early life story to make them look different. John was written maybe 90 years later so was wholesale fake. Jesus came to Earth with a message but left nothing behind. I think you mean the 1637 edition of the King James Version. The previous ones use "Iefvf" for the name. The Christian claim isn't that someone actually named "Jesus" lived in first century Judea. It isn't based on the name "Jesus." The person who is usually called "Jesus" in modern English Bibles and churches was called "Y'shua" in first century sources. That's what His mother and talmidim called Him. That's what the contemporary written sources call Him. That's what the ante-Nicean church writers call Him.

It's important to distinguish between 'Jesus' as laid out in the biblical texts (a story that is obviously utter nonsense) and the idea of a man who existed around that time, with that name, who was crucified. I think Dr. Carrier raised some very excellent points there. The fact there was already a celestial figure named Jesus before Christianity is very interesting indeed.

Filip Weekx I think the point was that the celestial figure called Jesus was prophesied to come to earth and do lot of the things the bible tells us Jesus did. This makes the biblical account of his life (or his having lived at all) far less likely to true. The fact so many other prophet's/religious figures performed strikingly similar actions and led similar (and also prophesied) life's adds even more weight to that hypothesis. Regardless of all that, I remain unconvinced that the actual 'Jesus' was a complete invention, but I think the theory does have a lot of plausibility to it. What I've taken from all this is the following- If you want to be accepted as a prophesied figure you'd make certain you perform the actions expected of that figure. We know that most of the 'miracles' he performed are easily reproducible parlour tricks, so it wouldn't be hard. It never crossed my mind that he might have essentially been following a script; by doing what he was already predicted to do. If you want secular proof then here you go Thallus is perhaps the earliest secular writer to mention Jesus and he is so ancient his writings don’t even exist anymore. But Julius Africanus, writing around 221AD does quote Thallus who previously tried to explain away the darkness occurring at Jesus’ crucifixion: “On the whole world there pressed a most fearful darkness; and the rocks were rent by an earthquake, and many places in Judea and other districts were thrown down. This darkness Thallus, in the third book of his History, calls, as appears to me without reason, an eclipse of the sun.” (Julius Africanus, Chronography, 18:1) If only more of Thallus’ record could be found, we might find more confirmation of Jesus’ crucifixion. But there are some things we can conclude from this account: Jesus lived, He was crucified, and there was an earthquake and darkness at the point of His crucifixion.

Cornelius Tacitus was known for his analysis and examination of historical documents and is among the most trusted of ancient historians. He was a senator under Emperor Vespasian and was also proconsul of Asia. In his “Annals’ of 116AD, he describes Emperor Nero’s response to the great fire in Rome and Nero’s claim that the Christians were to blame: “Consequently, to get rid of the report, Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judea, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome, where all things hideous and shameful from every part of the world find their centre and become popular.” In this account, Tacitus confirms several historical elements of the Biblical narrative: Jesus lived in Judea, was crucified under Pontius Pilate, and had followers who were persecuted for their faith in Christ.

It became an overwhelming feeling of emptiness that no amount of reading books by or listening to atheists could fill. There was no deprogramming from being a Christian so, I’ll call you out on that one but, there was most definitely deprogramming the empty headed ideas of my atheism. As an atheist , I had an intense dislike for Christianity and the people who practiced it but, that disappeared as I started discovering faith in the God of the Bible. Historically, Yeshua (Jesus) most certainly existed and, there is a plethora of information that proves he did. The problem with atheists is that they already have their minds made about it and, no amount of evidence to the contrary is acceptable. It’s as though critical thinking and reasoning are thrown out and replaced with nothing.

Dr Carrier is much more polished in his presentation 10 years later. I lean toward mythicism based on the Gospels having a political agenda from beginning to end. I rarely ever dignify youtube videos with comments but I feel compelled as a historian to just say that this Dr. Carrier is an embarrassment to scholarly study. I am not even going to try to defend the historical Jesus. But his misuse of historical context is quite convincing if you have never studied it yourself. I think he is banking on you trusting him and hoping you have already concluded that the Bible and Jesus is already wrong. Historical analysis should not have an agenda.
@Gnomefro
@Gnomefro 10 лет назад
_"Historical analysis should not have an agenda."_ That is a fine goal, but it's simply a fact of reality that most practitioners in this particular field have an overtly Christian agenda. Moreover, even the ones who would attempt to claim to be unbiased still employ a "historical" methodology that boils down to "We can extract historical information about magical people in ancient literature that talks about zombies by chopping away all the supernatural bits and contradictions and calling the rest history". _"I think he is banking on you trusting him and hoping you have already concluded that the Bible and Jesus is already wrong."_ As the magical claims in the bible contradict a lifetime of experience of how reality works in most people, the prior probability of the biblical account of Jesus being true is essentially zero. Any kind of competing hypothesis about fraud and lies is more probable unless it contradicts itself. That's the standpoint from which an honest historical analysis of this subject should start. The bible can still be a valuable source of claims about the ancient world, which then can be attempted to be investigated by archaeological means, but without such hard evidence backing the claims it's absurd to trust such worthless sources. If "history" simply amounts to literary analysis to you and not actually producing a plausible account of the past grounded in evidence, then I'm sure you're satisfied with establishing the existence of "historical" people like Jesus based on zombie novels, but I'd prefer to be a bit more conservative. The main reason for this is that Christianity arose primarily due to people believing absurdities they were told and not because of being witnesses to miracles. It's entirely plausible that it always was that way(Much like Joseph Smith's claims of the golden plates never reduce to actual history) as the only extra biblical sources talking about Jesus are also in the situation of likely repeating Christian claims.

Ancient religions, including Judaism and Christianity can be said to have been partially derived from astrology. Celestial bodies and their effects translated into stories. It makes for an interesting study. Some think Satan is Saturn. The son of god, the sun represented by Leo. The virgin mary, Virgo. The age of Pisces, the fish, the age of Christainity. Because Judaism uses a lunar calendar yes many think so. Those who assume Satan is Saturn or Santa forget the Bible was not written in English but in a hieroglyphic (similar to ancient Chinese in whose hieroglyphs were found the story of the God of the judeo Christian faith....now is that not an interesting topic) and numeric language. Intellectual idolatry make many think up these stories instead of checking the historiscity....so, real historical accounts become allegories and referred to as the story of King David". The supernatural, the existence of paranormal whatever cannot fully be explained by a man who wants to be famous with a book or who wants to be called an expert is seen as fact. I would recommend what Dr. Peale author and father of the book of Positive thinking did for most of his clients send these men or women to remote cabins and give them nothing but the bible and the instructions to study it 3 times in between chopping their own fire wood etc. The Greeks and Romans had their gods as the bible refers to the the men who were the heroes of old the legends and yet, when one wanted his son healed he did not pray to one of his Roman gods he went to Jesus to heal his son (which Jesus did from afar). The Greeks had their temple to apollo but when the apostles went to preach to them they accepted the new found Christian faith based on the teachings of Christ and what was that teaching.....Repentance FOR the forgiveness of sin...Luke 24 start from Jerusalem he told them! If the Judeo Christian faith, was derived from the Greek or Roman or even eygyptian gods Judaism and Christianity would have more accounts similar to theirs but, in Egypt one form of medicine was the use of ass' milk and in the judeo Christian religion circumcision is done on the 8th day. Precisely the 8th day, when the young child has all the right conditions according to the wonderful gift of scientific study for the blood to clot. It is interesting to study instead of seeing all these other religions as separate from christianity and christianity as "new" maybe the study should be how do these other religions from the hindu gods, to the Roman gods to the Greek gods, science including quantum physics paranormal science all somehow relate to the the Judeo Christian statements of a young earth, a creator, Angels who contaminated the gene pool, a savior for the human race different planes of existence, different dimensions, the digital simulation that may be our life within a greater reality.....not myths and legends

When words in different language groups sound similar, but have completely different meanings, then it is just co-incidence that they sound similar, nothing more.

perfectbark Yes I suppose "loving your enemies" and "praying for those who persecute you," is indeed evil and greedy. Horrible in fact. Just because some may hide behind religion and use it to gain control over people and for abuse, doesn't mean it's the religion itself that's at fault. People that actually have love for their fellow man (as religions some command) would never commit such atrocities. But I guess you have to leave all that out right, if you want to incriminate religion from a narrow-minded perspective? Guns don't kill people, neither do bombs. People kill people. By the same logic, we could say science is evil, because it allows people to invent nuclear weapons, which can be used for terrorism. But that would be wrong. Those abuse and misuse religion and science for their own selfish purposes are at fault, rather than the field of religion and science themselves.
@perfectbark
@perfectbark 10 лет назад
***** all of the worlds religions are a contrivance of man. Historically, all religions come, and go. Guns, are an invention of man, a tool that can be both useful and serve man, and abused. Science revealed the atom, technology, a contrivance of man, applied the knowledge secured through science and used it to make a weapon, again, an invention, or contrivance, of man. It's when one man believes that his religion or his ideology is superior to another man's ......well, therein lies the problem. If I had the opportunity right now to go to Sochi for a once in a lifetime chance to see the winter Olympics I'm afraid that I would have to decline, Why? Because man hates man, historically this hatred is revealed through the dogma of religion, and one man's ideology and religion, he believes, is superior to another resulting in one religious looney trying to eliminate another.

Just for the record... and nothing really to do with religion... "God" is THAT formless Infinite, All Inclusive Consciousness /Awareness which is the underlying Essence ... of all that IS and IS NOT. This formless Consciousness / Awareness is that underlying Essence .... which both supports and permeates all experiential realities of the non-local / non-physical mind. We are ALL the *THAT* of 'I AM THAT'... because THAT is ALL that exists. The only 'difference' between Jesus and MOST human BEings is that He actually KNEW who He was... Infinite Consciousness IN A MANIFEST FORM... while most have no idea who/what they TRULY ARE. In a very real sense 'we' are ALL the "Dream of God"... and of course Dream and Dreamer are ONE and the same. Most are still caught up in the divine dream of "NOT God"... however... SOME ARE Awake, while fewer yet are fully Enlightened. The KEY is Grace... the Revealing power of "God" / Consciousness. One uch as Jesus was not only fully Enlightened .. but as a Grace Bestower in His own right, had the ability to Awaken (those who were ready) to their own Divinity. So... Jesus was "God", YOU ARE " God"... Everyone and everything IS " God"... at their core essence. The key to SELF REALIZATION is Grace alone. Grace rips away the veil of ignorance which hides our True SELF from us. Nothing 'here' is as it appears to be. This is all a Divine Play of Consciousness and YOU.. to say, your TRUE SELF, not who you THINK you are, are the ONLY ONE HERE. .. Playing ALL these roles... all for the sake of the experience. Religions are clueless when it comes to "God"... what they call God is nothing more than a flawed mind construct which they model after their own judgemental, ego veiled minds. .. thus they end up with this Judgemental Deity God which, sadly, looks a lot like their own distorting ego. They even go as far as to hijack and distort Jesus.. to fit their own dogmatic narrative. Fact: Those Grace Awakened BEings who actually KNOW "God" .... KNOW better than to bother with any religion. They KNOW that "God" / Infinite Consciousness is the actual ESSENCE of all that IS ... that Jesus is "God'.. and that they too ARE "God". ... Dream and Dreamer are ONE, and eventually the Dreamer Awakens... when the time is right. Point to something which is NOT "God" in essence... it is impossible. What we THINK we are does die.. however.. THAT which we Truly are, which is currently hidden from the mind, has Never been Born and Never Dies. That all pervasive Consciousness is our True SELF. There is nothing to be saved from except the ignorance of our own veiled mind.. that THINKS that something other than "God" could actually exist. That which is NOT "God" is not ultimately real, but only a temporary construct of the mind... the mind being The Creative TOOL of " God". All just meaningless words here UNTIL Grace strikes, destroying our false ego, and Revealing our True SELF to us. One such as Jesus is far FAR Greater than ANY religion can comprehend. Jesus IS "God" and REALIZES THAT.... while YOU are "God" .. who has YET to Realize this Ultimate Truth. Grace alone Awakens and Grace is a FREE AGENT, owned by no religion, individual or group. Whatever the veiled, finite mind THINKS "God" is will always fall short of THAT Absolute Reality. So.. SEEK WITHIN...Be still and KNOW what the thinking mind can never Know ... that "God" alone exists. Peace

And just what kind of "Rock", as Peter is called, could also be Satan. Well Satan was once the brightest, but turned to the Dark Side. Then Satan would be the Moon (which is a Rock) and when Full the Moon is the brightest object in the Night Sky. But when the Moon is New, it is 100% totally Dark Sided, as we can't see it. If the claims of any religion are true, if they give a true picture of reality; then we should expect that objective scientific inquiry into the nature of reality aught be able to converge, independently, on the same conclusions as that religion; that is, without reference to any of the texts of the religion. If science cannot independently reach the same conclusions then why should the religion be given any credence, the only reason to believe the religion is that the religion proclaims itself to be true. The personal experiences of individual believers are not admissible as evidence because every religion has people who attest to its truth from personal experience or revelation.
@wmthewyld

@fiveredpears
@fiveredpears 9 лет назад
wmthewyld A circular argument is one in which the conclusion is used as a premise; or, to put it another way, an argument that assumes what it's conclusion is. In what way have I done that? If the truth claims of a religion are true then they should be independently verifiable. For example, if there were a group of scientists working in insolation we should expect them to make at least some of the same discoveries as other scientists.
@wmthewyld
@wmthewyld 9 лет назад
fiveredpears this is absurd, science deals with the physical. Ask your question when spiritual science is developed.
@fiveredpears
@fiveredpears 9 лет назад
wmthewyld Science is a systematic investigation into the way things are, it deals with what is; if there is the "spiritual" then it should be possible to investigate it in a meticulous way. That wouldn't be "spiritual science ", it would just be science. You are effectively admitting that there is no way that the claims of a religion can be discovered through investigation in an independent way. In the case of Christianity, all you have to go on are the writings of people who lived in the Iron age. Without those writings there is no way that a person making an independent study of reality could reach those conclusions. Christianity is making truth claims, truth claims aught to be verifiable. For example, if the human race was tricked into sin and was condemned to spend eternity in hell; there should be some way of establishing the truth of that in the world. If there isn't, then what is the status of a claim like that?
@wmthewyld
@wmthewyld 9 лет назад
fiveredpears science is nothing more than "best guessing" with a degree. Here is just one item of proof. A notable case of a scientists using fraudulent material to promote Darwinism was the work of German scientist and atheist Ernst Haeckel. Noted evolutionist Stephen Gould wrote the following regarding Ernst Haeckel's work in a March 2000 issue of Natural History: “ "Haeckel’s forceful, eminently comprehensible, if not always accurate, books appeared in all major languages and surely exerted more influence than the works of any other scientist, including Darwin…in convincing people throughout the world about the validity of evolution... Haeckel had exaggerated the similarities [between embryos of different species] by idealizations and omissions. He also, in some cases - in a procedure that can only be called fraudulent - simply copied the same figure over and over again.…Haeckel’s drawings never fooled expert embryologists, who recognized his fudgings right from the start. Haeckel’s drawings, despite their noted inaccuracies, entered into the most impenetrable and permanent of all quasi-scientific literatures: standard student textbooks of biology... Once ensconced in textbooks, misinformation becomes cocooned and effectively permanent, because…textbooks copy from previous texts.... [W]e do, I think, have the right to be both astonished and ashamed by the century of mindless recycling that has led to the persistence of these drawings in a large number, if not a majority, of modern textbooks!" So much for accuracy in science.

I'm sure that if this same "historian" spent time looking for evidence to disprove the existence of Plato, King Tut, Alexander the Great, or any other historical figure, he would no doubt find it. It is quite easy to disprove or twist historical facts when the evidence to prove it is scarce or vague. It leaves open such wide gaps that one can easily fill them with wild imaginary fabrications which in the end, boil down to nothing but mere personal opinion. akronymus many, and I mean many,books of the bible are meant to be historical scripts (whatever that means).
@akronymus
@akronymus 9 лет назад
mrjdgibbs maybe we should first define 'historical script'. Of course, the 5 books of Moses describe the descendente of the people of Israel from God Jhw in person -- but this is not a historical document in today's meaning of an exact list of dates, names, and facts. Also the new testament states the cv of Jesus, but in a collection of patchy, partly contradicting episodes which at large do not match with the Romans' historical records (Herodes was already dead at the time he alledgedly had all new-borns of Bethlehem killed, there was no such census as described by Lukas, etc etc). In other words: Plato, King Tut, Alexander appear in well-matching historical records of different sources and left works of own authorship. Nothing is conveyed of Jesus' authorship, all stories we have about him are taken down by followers, decades after his alledged time of life and death. No other contemporary source mention him. Of course, there is evidence of quite some Jewish preachers crucified as terrorists (proclaiming the rise of a new king who will kick out the Romans was judged as terrorism, if we use today's words), but there is no mention of one person that might fit to the apostles' scripts. To be fair, we can assume that the Romans didn't tend to write down too many details about their convicts (just as in recent history - the names of the people killed at Auschwitz and other such places were not written down either). Still, from source-material, there is no evidence for the person of Jesus as described by the apostles to have really existed. If there was a real Jesus (as founder of a 'cult' that turned out as very annoying for the Romans), what we can read about him today is very probably mixed with a lot of myth. The person exactly as stated in new testament probably did not exist, and the bible is not a historical script (in terms of historical science). I hope you can agree on this. Even if you believe in the truth in what the bible says (which you of corse may do - I don't dictate on other people how to explain the real or spiritual world), you might approve that there are no substantiated facts to proof the person 'Jesus'.
@mrjdgibbs
@mrjdgibbs 9 лет назад
akronymus I think I can agree substantially with this. True the books of the Bible do not meet modern standards of history, and there is obviously much mythologizing. Sennacherib's seige of Jerusalem comes to mind. It is independently attested in second chronicles and by an Assyria stele,however it isn't likely to have happened in the manner presented by either of them. That's the challenge and the fun of ancient history. I'm not sure why people other than the apostles need to mention Jesus. But he is certainly mentioned at least once by Josephus, so there's that. But, of course, like you say, whatever we know is mixed with a lot of myth. Beyond that I, like you, am an atheist. I disagree that there are no substantial facts the prove the existence of the person, Jesus. But then I suppose that depends on your definition of the word "substantial". It is certainly true, however, that history serves no one's agenda. I think that's important.

Or when they discover a Holy location that they claim, God left his signature at, but the secularists offer a possible alternative, will you diligently study, ALL, available information to help you in your pursuit of the truth? Because until then, and for the common good, you shouldn't offer an opinion unless, misinforming people isn't a big deal to you anyway! You should know that, according to the Holy Scriptures, we are held accountable for our actions! And if our actions influence or guide people away from the truth of God, and it turns out that the evidence that is for God is greater, then you might want to take my words seriously! Cause that is not a situation ANYBODY wants to face! Just saying. But for your son good, be wise enough to realize that our opinions do not determine reality! And that the trust would remain weather or not we ever lived! In wisdom, the truth is acknowledged, not decided! It is sovereign and absolute! Good luck!

Virtually all modern scholars of antiquity agree that Jesus existed, and most biblical scholars and classical historians see the theories of his non-existence as effectively refuted. In antiquity, the existence of Jesus was never denied by those who opposed Christianity. Although a very small number of modern scholars argue that Jesus never existed, that view is a distinct minority and virtually all scholars consider theories that Jesus' existence was a Christian invention as implausible. The problem for the historian, wrote Blainey, is not therefore, determining whether Jesus actually existed, but rather in considering the "sheer multitude of detail and its inconsistencies and contradictions". -Wikipedia.
@Gnomefro
@Gnomefro 11 лет назад
Almost all bible scholars are also Christians and get into the field for precisely that reason, so an appeal to majority is not really that convincing. In any case, it's not what people's opinions are that matters, but what they can actually demonstrate and unfortunately there's no information about Jesus outside a work that is, as you say, full of inconsistencies and contradictions in addition to making claims about violations of natural law. The fact that the existence of Jesus was not contested by critics is not really a major point either, given that there are no critics within a time frame where they could easily dispute it by pointing at living witnesses. What on earth do you suppose critics of Christianity in Rome would do to find out who lived in Jerusalem a century earlier? Hell, you're talking about a time period where people readily accepted miracle claims from other people and even "historians" reported omens and magic as well. In any case, the biggest problem with the claim "Jesus existed" is that it is very similar to "Abraham Lincoln the vampire killer existed". Even if there was a real guy motivating it all, it's abundantly clear that the mythical character did not exist and it's incredibly misleading to say that "Abraham Lincoln the vampire killer existed" merely because there was a historical person named Abraham Lincoln.

Gnomefro The field of New Testament scholarship is very diverse. There are many Jews and secular humanist, and even among Christians you have extremely liberals scholars like E P Sanders, Thom Stark and Dale Allision just name a few. Conservative scholars do not dominate the conclusions of this field; it is highly contested. But despite the biases of Christian, Jewish, and Atheist critical scholars of early Christianity and their diversity of opinions, they are untied in affirming that Jesus existed through their rigorous study of the original languages, culture, sociology, and theology of the 1st Century. While the only group of people who tend to deny that Jesus existed are "fundamentalist" atheist (Ex: Carrier and Atheism Plus?? really?) motivated by a desire to destroy Christianity rather than critically assessing facts.

Because that whole Jesus thing is tagged on with all of the horrible things of the old testament, all of which Jesus continued and in some places made stricter. And in the end it didn't matter anyways, you could be a torture murder serial killer, but if you did it with Jesus in your heart you'd get into heaven. These beliefs are antiquated and don't have any proof in the first place, why take a bunch of weird bullshit as truth especially if it's not even attached to good beliefs. Trying to ignore the bad parts is carving out your own faith and has little to do with the Biblical Christianity that people uphold. You don't need some insane antiquated religion that prevents scientific progress and social progress to get people to love each other, in reality it just leads to hatred of other religions, gays, witches and others who don't fit into their structure. It's nice to say how good it is, but it's followers and not even the book itself meet the expectations that people push on it.

MrNoname7296/* Because that whole Jesus thing is tagged on with all of the horrible things of the old testament */ What are you on about??? Everything you just wrote has absolutely nothing to do with whether Jesus or anyone else existed. Are you an Anti-Semite? The Old Testament is a very fine and moral account of the history of the Jews. There are many things in their law if it was implemented would drop the crime rate in the West down substantially. /* These beliefs are antiquated */ No such thing as "antiquated". You're beliefs are antiquated by the same standards. The OT has absolutely nothing to do with beliefs. They are recorded historical accounts. /* You don't need some insane antiquated religion that prevents scientific progress and social progress */ Tell that to the Nazis and Communists who abandoned religion for "Science". You are probably completely ignorant of the fact that Science is born out of Christianity by Christians. You cannot have Science without Christianity. That is why the Communist atheistic states never developed Science. Christian scientists: Galileo, Keplar, Newton, Farraday, Maxwell etc Deist scientist: Einstein (Jew). Have you ever heard of them? There is no dichotomy between Religion and Science. Its like trying to create a dichotomy between Law and Medicine. That's an absurd statement you made. Religion guides social progress. You have no moral society without Religion. You would not even have Democracy without Christianity. Its funny how Atheism also goes towards National Socialism as witnessed by the 20th century "The Bible is the Government of the People, by the People, and for the People" - John Wycliffe (1382 )
@MrNoname7296
@MrNoname7296 10 лет назад
Surfxeo I'm literally laughing at you because you think that the old testament is a respectable moral guide for anyone. Let's start, he's Jesus himself saying that every law from the old testament still applies completely so you can rule that out of your agenda. “For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:18-19 RSV) You think that stoning disobedient teenagers is completely moral? You think that stoning women who get raped unless they marry they rapist moral? You believe that people wearing mixed fabrics being stoned is moral? You believe that killing your son because some cosmic psychopath told you to is moral? You think that stoning anyone who goes nearly as far to pick up sticks on the sabbath is moral? I fucking hope you don't, and the fact that others don't need this shit to make their own moral compass proves that people can be moral without the awful book that is the bible or it's reprehensible creator Yahweh.
@drphil36
@drphil36 10 лет назад
MrNoname7296 First thing i wanna say is : the old tetament is not a moral book, nobody said this, it is a mixed history and stories of the Jews in relation with their God, not much morality there. Don't forget the old testament is a mix of many books. What Jesus was about are the commandments, specially the first 3 in the Torah, and these are moral codes !! the moral codes are ; be fruitful and multiply, love God as your neighbour, etc...It was this that Jesus refered to. Second : the kingdom of heaven is not place somewhere in heaven or somewhere els, it is a state of being which is difficult too reach, that's what Jesus ment.
@Surfxeo
@Surfxeo 10 лет назад
Filip Weekx Actually, if you had ever read through the entire Old Testament and into the New, you will realise it is a moral book on the good and evil of mankind. The only good throughout originates with God who is supremely merciful to those who repent and yet just in demonstrating his wrath against all ungodliness. Second. The Kingdom of Heaven is not a state of being. If you read Jesus words you would know that Jesus is the King of Heaven and brought the Kingdom of God to earth. He began His work in bring the people to His Father and then time has been fulfilled the Kingdom will be brought together into the New Creation. The LORD Jesus Christ is the King of the Kingdom of Heaven.

There are very few secular historians that dispute Yeshua of Nazareth physically lived and existed. There is more biographical and historical records for his existence than any other figure from that time period, including Pilate, Caesar, Alexander, or even Constantine. Study the 1st and 2nd century secular or pagan historians for proof. Read Josephus, Pliny the Younger, et al.... It is fine to disagree upon whether he was who he said he was, but to deny the man ever lived, I suspect, will come back to bite you later.
@Thickcurves
@Thickcurves 11 лет назад
Actually the only evidence he existed comes decades and sometimes centuries after his death. So no, there are no historical records that Jesus ever existed from the time period he lived. No records, no journal entries, no manifest lists, nothing. You would think Pontius Pilate would have at least mentioned him at some point or even Josephus. The only thing Josephus mentions is the brother of Jesus, Jesus (Yeshuas) being a common name at the time. There is some debate that Josephus mentioned Jesus (Yeshuas), but once again it was a common name such as Michael or Todd is today, he literally could have been talking about an eighth of all male jews.

The Talmud is a collection of oral Rabbinical teachings. Often non-contextual, and oft changing. Spoken, then written, it is over 6000 pages long, and consists mainly of the opinions of "teachers" who believed Yeshua was a false Messiah. Not sure what that has to do with anything.

What folly! There are surviving documents written by Caesar and entire cities named after Alexander and Constantine. Millions of people fought for and died under their generalship, cities were destoryed and built. Then there are coins, busts, laws and many many contemporary references. This doesn't mean Jesus didn't live of course (he probably did) but it is less certain than those you mentioned. If this were not the case then the [possible] constantine wouldn't have needed the council of Nicaea to finalise the formal details of Jesus' life.

Why do you think that religion teaches its followers to be warry of the dangers of science? "Oh, Beware the wise and learned!" Wouldn't it be much more impressive if they joined with science to demonstrate their claims through imperical methods? For instance, would you not agree that an obedient, prayerful, god-fearing people would have, in general, better health and lower rates of such ailments as cancer, depression, etc.? If god answers the prayers of the faithful and blesses the lives of those who believe, doesn't it stand to reason that a scientific comparison could be made between the average health of believers vs. non-believers? Where is this study? Why aren't thiests falling all over themselves to present the statistics that demonstrate that a life of devout worship results in better health? Answer: the evidence doesn't agree. Religious people have exactly the same random chance at cancer, high blood pressure, and other ailments they pray to god for prevention and cures. In this example, empirical evidence SHOULD be available to support religion. However, god again fails to deliver. Why is that?

Perhaps a better way of showing things is to see how many christians are killed each year everywhere arround the globe. I don't think that there is group of people more persecuted then christians, besides perhaps the Jews. And in this view I don't include catholics, which is the false church offcourse that is 'blessed' with temporary material wealth and temporary wordly influence and power. Also nowhere in scripture is there written that every true believer will be healed of any illness, God told the apostle Paul, that His mercy was enough for him, to prevent him to become prood. Also God says we should drink some wine now and then for 'our many infermeries'. Also I think that most true believers, like me have a hard time refraining from sinning, and this prevents further healing, this is a lack of faith and a lack of persuit. When the world creeps back in...
@FordJacobs
@FordJacobs 10 лет назад
MrTruth111 And what is it that we know about Paul? Do you know who wrote the New Testament Gospels? Most of what religious people claim cannot be proven or disproved. However, many aspects of religion, particularly some truth claims and historical accounts recorded in scripture, can be tested. If the Bible were true, then it would pass every test. However, it tends to fail every test. Yes, we know where Jericho and Jerusalem are. OK. But there are hundreds of things recorded as the word of God that can be completely proven false. The bronze-aged goat herders that wrote that book didn't know what they didn't know, and they filled it the gaps with a lot of speculation that now can be proven false. No sense it continuing to believe, so why do you?

The chosen people that the Bible says Jesus was sent to save, didn't and don't recognise him as the Messiah 4) The Jesus story reads like a dreadful cut and paste job based on pre-Christian pagan religious figures. He is making an effort to not offend christians and simply explain his reasoning for being aetheist. Basically, he isn't being a douche. And as a christian myself, I seek to educate myself on the facts so that when I present my argument, I'm not just pulling it out of my ass. J.C. was 1 of the better known Saviors of the Middle4 East & part of India 20 - 25 centuries ago. He announced his return within the normal life span of those in his presence when he said it. However, here we are almost 2,000 years later & apparently something 'held up' his return.
@HeroQuestFans

and people continue to predict his return every year. what's your point? Jesus didn't' actually promise he would return in the lifetime of his first followers to end the world. I know, you have heard the opposite many times. but please, your excuse will be "well they changed it in the text to something else... but they also kept the old part and thought nobody would notice and put it back in there next to the changed part... but nobody noticed until atheists came along because we're the only smart people" right? some Christians back then thought he would return right away, just like there are guys on youtube right now saying he's coming back XXX day. do they speak for all of us? Jesus said we would not know his return, but you think that means he did know, because it would be within a few years and by the time they wrote it down the time was already up? give me a break. I know, you think Christians are that dumb. get over yourself...
@HeroQuestFans
@HeroQuestFans 5 лет назад
the reason you guys don't believe in Jesus Christ is simple... you reject the entire concept of God and the supernatural. if you didn't, you admit these things are just as possible as any other mystical claim. so it really doesn't matter if this or that excuse comes to pass (bad effects of Christianity in history, whether this or that miracle was a historical event, whether all the Gospels attest equally to this particular detail, whether Jesus was supposed to return at a certain date, the genealogies, etc). I mean, who are you trying to convince? the fundies will just ignore you anyway, and those more learned already know the answers to these questions. so who is your target? the person who puts "Christian" on a census form but hasn't been to church (other than weddings and funerals) or cracked a bible (to actually read it) for years? the Jesus Mythicism stuff is really the worst part. it doesn't make one look rational or inquisitive, it just makes a person look insane, like a flat earther.

You obviously don't know the Bible at all or haven't read it from the beginning to the end. If you had done literature in college or university you would have read and reread what exactly Shakespeare was trying to imply. And yet you discard the Bible without even trying trying to understand what it says. God is eternal and his words are eternal. If you study the Bible carefully you will realize that the Words he has spoken are for eternity, " In the beginning was the word, and the word......"

I have no problem believing a Jesus existed. I simply don't believe he was a celestial magician. The description made in the documentary series "Who Was Jesus" pretty much conforms to the persona my parents fostered in me as a kid: a good man who encouraged poor jews to keep their money and not support the wealthy priests of the temple; to engage instead in a personal relationship with Yahweh instead. That ticked off the wealthy priests who saw their revenue diminishing, but who couldn't do anything about him for fear of getting their own butts in a jamb from the Pilate government. When Jesus pushed his luck too far and started the riot during the temple's flea market, it was the perfect opportunity for the priesthood to report Jesus as a local troublemaker, and advised Pilate that if he didn't do something about him (as the Pilate government had already crucified numerous other trouble makers), PIlate would most likely be fired by the Roman emperor as an incompetent for 'keeping the peace' in those provinces. The Romans of that era were much like the Mafia of today, so PIlate nailed Jesus just as he'd nailed numerous other troublemakes on crosses up and down the main road into town as a warning for visitors to 'keep their noses clean' while in that locale. But a grand magician? Nah.

We are all God's creation only those who He adopts become His children. Jesus is so special because He is the first born of God. Because He was born into a man and lived a perfect life and then was sacrificed and died to pay for the sins of the entire world. Because He rose again and lives forevermore to show us that eternal life is real. So special because He was obedient and did the will of the Father and gave Him the glory, honor and praise. So special because He single handedly restored our ability to go directly before God and communicate with him directly. Other than that He's just a regular guy. It's all in the Bible. Mary Sue Beth What do you mean Jesus paid for the sins of the world?
@marysuebeth3996
@marysuebeth3996 10 лет назад
Sammy Skeptic Jesus paid the penalty for all of fallen man's sins once and for all. That's why He said on the cross just before He gave up His spirit. "It is finished". However God does require we except His free gift willingly. That is why we are told, "Whosoever believes in Jesus will be saved but whosoever believeth not is condemned already". That is also why we are not our own to do our own we have been bought and paid with by the blood of Jesus. It's kinda like say I gave you a million dollars but I didn't hand it to you directly I deposited it in a bank for you. Then I told you what bank and all you had to do was go there and give your name to get your money but you chose not to believe me. All you had to do is go to the bank and ask them for the money but instead chose not to. Does that mean you are not a millionaire? Well, yes and no. You are but if you don't access the money then your are not rich. I hope this analogy helps, by the way I didn't really give you any money it was just for an example that God has provided for everyone but not everyone knows thats what I'm doing here writing to you. You see my job is easy God aid go tell the the good news. It's not my job to make you believe in fact I can't and I don't have to. No one can come to God accept the Spirit of God draws Him. Is He drawing you? He doesn't take pleasure in the wicked perishing but we are made in His own image and so one of our traits is to be self sufficient. You see we don't want God but we need Him, He on the other hand does not need us but wants us. Born once die twice, born twice die once. It's not just a clever saying...
@marysuebeth3996
@marysuebeth3996 10 лет назад
fred forty With man it is impossible but with God all things are possible. You are certainly entitled to your own opinion and I respect that. However this is what God has to say... "Only a fool says in his heart there is no God" I often am amazed remembering what God said to Job, "where were you when I created the foundation of the earth?" I would pose the same question to you but I know better. I just want you to think about it though. Are you by any chance one of those people that blame everything on somebody else? That hates their own life or circumstances? Did someone mistreat you that you now have a forgiveness problem? What has hardened your heart? No matter God is ready to give you a new heart if you only ask and believe. One more thought, I wonder since God is love how can those that do not know Him the author of love know how to love themselves or others?

Jesus' existence was documented in the Babylonian Talmud as well as the Koran, which mentions the Gospel of Jesus. For what it's worth, atheists who've had NDEs had profound changes in their lives...they became "believers"...you cannot attribute a profound change form atheist to believer to a simple "dream", "hallucination" or "oxygen deprivation."
