Why I Used a Cardboard Box to Change the Oil on a Ferrari F12

Changing the oil on a Ferrari F12 is not very complicated. It does however require about 13L of 10w60 oil which is difficult to find. Furthermore, the filter costs about $100! At the dealership, the oil change might cost upwards of $1000!!! You can easily diy change the oil on the F12 at home with basic hand tools.

A friend of mine owns a shop and has one of those 4 post lifts. He put LED light strips on all the inner ledges of the platform (The red part of your lift). It lights up the bottom of the car so well you don't need supplemental lighting for fluid changing work. Very handy. BTW: Castrol, Redline, and others make a 10w-60 oil as BMW M engines used to use that. I thought Shell did as well, but I could be mistaken.

I always use aluminum foil if I need to “redirect” draining oil away from something. You can mold it to whatever shape you need. The cardboard tube was pretty smart though!

It’s $930 to change oil in my 2023 Sprinter at the dealer and thats why I do it myself for $200.

Hey Dan, I am doing this job on the quick jack. Since the rubber pad is bigger than the lifting points. Do you think the rubber pad will crush and crack the undertray panels and the side skirts?

The oil cooler wasnt drained. I think theres around a quart inside the oil cooler. Could be a little less but I got a pretty decent amount out of mine when I did it.

Whenever my wife or I see the bottom skid plate handing loose under a vehicle, we refer to them having gone to Goodyear for service. There’s a long story behind it, but I’m sure you can guess

Maybe the other 2 liters were still inside the cool engine. Never heard of doing an oil change without first warming up the engine to thin out the oil.

i heard it from others, and i find it really weird. i can find 10W-60 for cars and my bike at literally almost every auto parts store for about 10-12 euros per liter (quart). is it that rare in the US? probably only needed for very few european cars i guess

I ues to change my oil on 3 of my cars when I was younger, had the time. But now I say forget that & pay someone to do it. I had ramps & didn't have a garage for cold days.

Yeah, over filling the oil is no joke. Way back in 2012 I went to my Ford dealer for a free complementary oil & filter changed in my New Boss 302 Mustang. When I went back to pick up the car, it just didn't feel or sound right when I started it. So, I quickly shut it off and opened the hood, to find oil coming out of dip stick tube. NOT GOOD. That's Right! The service tech guy put in the NEW oil without draining out the OLD oil or changing the filter. But wait, it gets even dumber. After everyone apologized for the error, (number 1 oil guy thought number 2 oil guy had already drained & change the filter.) The poor tech who made the mistake started to get in my car to DRIVE it back into the service bay!! fortunately I was still holding the keys and told him to PUSH the car inside and that I will steer. Luckily, no damage was done and the car still runs great to this day.

Hi , Dan . Interesting you didn't drain the plug other engine drain plug and you didn't replace the plug with new 🤔 ? I think other 2 quart oil of oil was the other plug .

@@normalguysupercar , it's by the oil filter , about 4 or 5 inches away . Towards the transmission . It's above your head , when you were torqueing the filter .

@normalguysupercar Don't you have to disconnect the oil cooler lines in the front of the car. I noticed in your other FF(similar engine) video you did not drain the front oil cooler and the lines. Ferrari states this is the proper procedure, is this just overkill or is it ok to be lazy and not do it in your opinion?

Maybe ask the Josh guy who has worked as a tech. It seems like you just assume you know what you are doing because it’s a simple oil change, but the reality is that there’s a specific process ferrari has to make sure all the oil gets drained to prolong and maximize their v12s. The good news is not many F12 owners relying on RU-vid to do oil changes. I know you don’t claim to be professional mechanic, but if you are documenting something or preparing a car for sale and have a platform, I imagine you won’t to reach the right process or method.

F430 £650 annual service! That's roughly $820😢. I don't know about you guys, but in the UK you'd be expected to service it every 12mths. For me, if (like last year) the car did just 900 miles, I ain't throwing another $820 at it for at least another 6mths. It makes no sense. Some owners service them after doing virtually '0' miles since the last. Am I the fool, or do some owners simply have more money than sense?

That's because oil absorbs moisture so after a year, the oil is no longer as effective. I wouldn't cheap out, go get the service. It's not worth the risk on engines this expensive.

Yeah but Dan on a Ferrari? (or any supercar!) is this an American thing? Im sure I have asked this before but I would want full service history (or receipts) to see that oil/maintenance has been carried out properly if I was buying a car@@normalguysupercar I would use a Ferrari specialist who would be alot cheaper if I didn't do maintenance myself (if my cars didn't have dealer warranties)

@@PixelVogue Honestly on the newer cars it's not a big deal. They don't have the crazy maintenance requirements like the older cars.
