I have just converted from PC/W11 to Mac. I'm also using Linux. None of the systems are perfect for programmers but the performance of M3 and the battery life is really great. That MacOS has no built-in package manager is a bit of a bummer. Showing hidden files in Finder using Icons is not a pretty sight. That Apple dropped the server is not a surprise.

Thanks for sharing. Currently trading in my MBP 14" M2 for a more efficient Lenovo Chromebook. Can't wait to see how VS Code runs on it when I fold it into a tablet 🎉.

You forgot to mention that you can develop and publish iOS and Android apps on Windows computers but not on Macs...

It's all fun and games until you discover a ThinkPad T480... It's like a Framework 13 but 4-5x cheaper, costs only $180-230 used. The upgrades are now very cheap too, the 72Wh non-OEM battery costs like $30-40. You actually don't need a MacBook, unless you work for a big company that buys one for you and you need to compile huge projects every two minutes.

It's a disgrace what this journalist in PCWorld says about Macs. Most of his statements about Macs are simply wrong. As a software developer, I'm glad that I can use a Mac for work. My employer gave me the choice between a PC laptop and a MacBook Pro. I have never regretted my decision.

Here is another thing that Alex failed to mention: You do get a variety of viruses and anti-viruses to enjoy on a PC, while on Macs, there just isn't much selection. It pains me every time that I flip open a Macbook and the OS does not tell me to complete a virus scan. I feel unsecure, unsanitized and it is growing into a bigger mental problem. How dare Apple does this to its customers is beyond my beliefs.

Windows for code seems weird to me, you could say that Linux is better than MacOS, but Windows? I will stick with a Unix system until anything better comes out in the future.

Hi Alex, Can you do a clamshell mode experiment? I am particularly interested in the potential performance degredation of using any of the 'Pro' and 'Max'-tier chips on the MacBook Pros when they are being used in clamshell mode. Some manufacturers claim that their clamshell stands are better than others because they allow for more ventilation, but I am not sure that a 200 USD+ clamshell stand is necessary if a simple, much less expensive stand for twelve south will do the job. You can run the experiment with a simple clamshell mode stand and normally without the clamshell mode stand running. Keep up the good work, Ali

I know it's April's fools joke, but in actuality... When in coding in eclipse i miss windows + Arrow functionality to stick a window to half of monitor. Working with 2 monitors is painful on macos as well

Dude, if you want the fastest compilation times, build yourself a desktop PC and choose a great performance CPU, with lots of RAM and a really fast SSD or two. That's a whole heck of a lot harder (or maybe just 3x the price) to do with a Mac. Though maybe you can just rent the very best EC2 instance (or a few of them) for when you want to compile, and you can still be happy with your Macbook, if that's your choice.

Nice one. On the contrary, I get less out of a Windows Laptop. Software Development is a creative job. You have to design software that has to not only function but appear beautiful for the end user. And to get your creative juices flowing, the Macbooks are a source of inspiration (for me at least). Its simplicity, sleekness, attention to detail overflows into how you interact with it for work. I'm also a sucker for marketing because I know the Mac is being used by creatives all over the world from artists to movie producers. Although I'm not in that field, is the spirit to create something new, that no one has seen before, is what I draw from to keep me going. Technically speaking, Macbooks are proven to be superior to Windows laptops. Intel admits it has fallen behind and now aspiring to be the 2nd largest foundry, still at 14nm node I might add. Price wise, I got my Macbook from the refurbished store, enjoying a good 15-20% discount which undercuts many rival laptops out there. I also can't stand stickers plastered all over my laptop like some kitchen appliance. Yuck. I bet the feller is a top developer operating at the highest level, a superstar full stack dev. A Mac is not suited for him. I, on the other hand, am a regular guy but with a big dream... the Mac is what I need.

After this video I traded my MBP 16" M2 Max 96Gb 1TB SSD for a i386 DX 40-60Mhz 8Mb RAM 40Mb HDD Conan, 5.25" floppy disk with MS-DOS 6.0. Now I'm really productive hacker programming with this colossal box!

I've decided to keep my M1 MBA. and not upgrade it. Instead, I'm going to invest in a gaming laptop. OFC I prefer MacOS but I'm tired of being limited in what I can do. Apple made the mistake of still having 8 GB RAM and 256 GB for the standard version and being unable to upgrade whenever you want. ASUS G14 and G16 Zephyrus have 32 GB RAM soldered on but it's THIRTY TWO?!?! as well as many other Windows laptops/PC's.

Macs are good for development, I bought one a while ago, it was kind of slow at first, but once I installed Linux it started working like a charm.

Hi Alex you are the only one that can help me. i have been contemplating to buy the macbook this year but really torn between the 15" Air with 16gb unified and the 14" M3 Pro Macbook pro. Would really appreciate it if you could make a comparison video doing the programming testing that you do.

Jokes aside, I chose 2000$ Windows laptop over 2000$ Macbook only because none of Macbooks have Insert/Delete/PageUp etc keys. I have to do a lot of stuff on remote servers through SSH where these buttons are getting super handy. I mean they label their laptops as "Pro", I presume a lot of other professionals would love to have more options when it comes to keyboard shortcuts.

Depends on what kinds of programs the programmer's working on. For web development, definitely need closest to Unix/Linux OS to run multiple types of servers locally before deploying to staging, production servers. The Windows suck badly if you r locked up in company provided Windows laptop that does not give admin-level permissions to install most compatible software for development. Of course I'd prefer a personal Linux laptop if the market has better laptops like MacBook Pros that r efficient, quiet, long battery, great keyboards, and pretty fast. At least Mac OS is really stable compared to Windows. If affordability for not-the-fastest build is not an issue, Macs r not bad if don't mind getting a few utility apps to make up missing features that Windows can provide.

I've got a MacBook for programming, and the most annoying thing for me is the keyboard. Small arrow keys, no separate PgUp/PgDown/Home/End/Delete keys, only fn combinations. It's really inconvenient.

As if a good Windows laptop wouldn't cost the same as a MacBook. I work on a MacBook Pro for about 3500€, but my employer paid for it. A Precision 7780 can also cost €3500 and more. In the end, it's a work device and will be sold. Privately, an iPad would be enough for everything

If its about efficiency, i would say you can use a Raspberry Pi to do coding. Unless you are doing anything AI/GPU, you should be ok. There are cloud machines/VMs (MS/APPL/LINX) whichever flavor you like with/without GPUs that you can get and then use your RPi/Chromebook or any laptop to connect to it and code (you will need an Internet connection) and you can use this from anywhere with any laptop/computer. The best Mac, I would ever suggest to anyone (non AI/ML people) would be the Macbook Air 15" with 16G RAM and 512G SSD. That is the best value for money machine out there. If Apple were not the gluttons they are, the 512G SSD and 16GB RAM would'nt cost another $400. This machine would be awesome at $1300, alas it would cost somewhere around $1700. That price takes away the charm of it, and you try to find an alternate AMD laptop that runs Linux. Thats the circle I have always fallen into.

For programming, a linux machine with an N100 processor is more than enough. If you want compilation speed, just use distcc deamon on your server...

Unacceptable aspects of windows: zoom only works if magnifier app is running, battery life, 2lb power brick, no shell with Unix commands (wsl almost works here), bloat ware pre-installed, no copy/paste between devices, no iMessage integration.

I use my m2 mac to ssh into my linux machine. Bam, superior battery life + freedom from a walled garden.

The real problem is: Steffen is from Germany, my home country. In Europe, and especially in Germany we have less people with Apple products, because: of course, they are too expensive. Why do I have to pay 1500€ for an iPhone, when my Xiaomi ca do the job for 300€? That's the kind of thinking here in Germany. We have the money, but we do not want to be scammed. Why: We want to save money. The people here are in belief "die ziehen uns nur das Geld aus der Tasche" ("they" are sucking out our money straight out of our pockets). I and my whole family just enjoy the Apple Ecosystem with our MacBook Pros, our iPhone Pros, our Apple Watches (Ultra), the Apple TVs and HomePods. Everything combined with the Apple One Premier Subscription. Shared Photo Libraries, Why do I spend so much money on it? I want a life. I do not want to tinker around (anymore, I did) to save a few bucks per month. The rest of my fellow Germans are buying NAS systems and copy their photos with a USB cable, they hear music with Spotify free or RU-vid with Ads and are sending their photos via WhatsApp in potato quality.

I used windows with rtx3070 and i7 13th laptop and I have macbook pro m1 max, and I changed the windows laptop to a desktop pc because winbook is unusable - everytime it throthtles, can't work wihout charging. I create games and some web services. I can't work on win laptops.
