Why I Won’t Learn Esperanto - A Response. 

I’ve been learning a couple of languages over the last 3 years. First it was casual, but then I developed a dream of one day becoming a polyglot. My reason for learning languages is: “I have no idea”. I just like them. I like the fact that I can communicate with different people and make different sounds, and that they mean something to someone. At first it was German, because why not. Then it was Dutch, because my fiancé comes from Dutch lineage. Then it was Spanish, because of the practicality of it here in the US. Now it is Esperanto, because of the ease of learning, the simplicity, and the community. Everyone I’ve met through it has been so friendly and amazing. I also am learning it with my brother, who has not learned a language before, and we are able to say simple things to each other without others knowing. It is a simple way to bond and to grow closer.

Didn't mean to watch this entire video, but it was a good response. I actually read that article before and remember rolling my eyes while I read it and thinking, "this guy just doesn't get it." Thanks for putting in the work of putting forth a response.

Last time I told a friend that I was learning Esperanto (the conversation was about languages), he commented it was useless. I just got quiet for the sake of my remaining sanity and time, but congrats to anyone who can concisely and politely defend its point of view.

In fact, Esperanto does have a "country", we call it *_LA MONDO_* !

I think Esperanto will fail when every Esperantist has died, all our books have burned and our videos destroyed. Basically, it won't fail.

The 'Esperanto has no culture' idea was echoed by J.R.R. Tolkien when his earlier enthusiasm for Esperanto had subsided: "Volapük, Esperanto, Ido, Novial, &c &c are dead, far deader than ancient unused languages, because their authors never invented any Esperanto legends." I have written elsewhere, "Arguably, Tolkien was wrong about Esperanto - but for exactly the right reason. Unlike the other languages he mentions, Esperanto does indeed have its own mythology. It does not consist of magical legends, but is a kind of political mythology of hope, a shared belief among its speakers that the world would be a better and friendlier place if everyone in the world could communicate across borders as easily as Esperantists do, in a language that belongs to no single nation or people. This notion, called the _interna_ _ideo_ by Esperantists, is sometimes a source of embarrassment. Nevertheless, this idealism pervades much of Esperanto literature, especially from the first fifty years of its existence. Many, if not most, biographies of Zamenhof tend to mythologize his life, treating the behavior of some of those who tried to gain control of Esperanto's development with the sort of language usually reserved for the likes of a Lucifer or Sauron. So, if Esperanto is not dead, it is precisely because there are legends and myths connected with the language." This, I suppose, is what Mezzoguild means by a cultlike worship of Zamenhof, but that's a stretch.

We could just ignore that 'old blog', but in responding to it you have created one of the best serious-minded videos on Esperanto you have ever created. Congratulations, but don't neglect the off-beat ones!

The fact you are gaining subscribers, slowly but you are, just shows that Esperanto is growing and getting better :P

Vivu Esperanto!

I've been learning Esperanto for just six weeks now and enjoying it very much. As I got more and more into it I naturally poked around on RU-vid, initially just searching for "Esperanto". It's astonishing just how many of these blogs there are giving reasons for not learning Esperanto. Some of those unsavoury messages I'm sorry to say did get stuck in my green little mind a few weeks ago and could easily have put me off. Thanks Evildea for taking the time to answer this particularly poisonous one. I do wonder though where the motivation for these people comes from and how they can sustain it. I suspect it's just classic getting off on bashing minorities and "others" in the way of Jew or Gay hating, that sort of thing, Esperanto being a perceived threat. Pathetic, if nonetheless destructive. I look forward to the day I can write something like this in Esperanto instead of English.

I actually listened to the podcast were he talked about Esperanto and the venom almost turned me off from listening to the rest of his podcasts. But I figured, I should not take it personally as I was listening to learn and it was just his opinion and I don’t have to live with him. Thank you for this response video, as usual, you taught me something new.

There's a saying, "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing". How true it is, but unfortunately, people who have a little or no knowledge on a subject, generally act as if they hold PHDs in them, and they go on influencing us. BTW I have started learning Esperanto since yesterday, and I am super excited to start this journey.

But it's called the Esperanto COMMUNIty, as in COMMUNIsm, and it is a L-anguage as in L-enin. Coincidence? I think not...

If Esperanto is a communist language, how is it that the Soviet Union itself prohibited its teaching? In the countries of the former Soviet Union, Russian was the compulsory language in schools, not Esperanto. Esperanto is literally the only language that would take me seriously. My nativ language is slavic. I learned english in school for 10 years. Is it worth learning any other language then English? I learned French for two years. I learned Italian for four years. I have traveled nether to France nor to Italy. I visited Hungary, Germany, Russia, Romania and Holland. I listened a lot to french and italian musik. I had the opportunity to talk to some italians (3-4 times) about 1 hour in total. I am not capable to watch films or news nor to read literature in original. I have been learning Esperanto for two years. After three months of study I started reading my first novel (using dictionary a lot at the beginning) . I have red few books, I can understand videos, news and radio podcasts. Few times a month I participate in chat meetings on the Internet on various topics. I'm not fluent yet. In my case, the ratio of benefits to the effort invested in learning is convincigly in favor of Esperanto.

No "stan" is used to parody fictional countries of ideologies. I've seen it most used to satirize anarcho-capitalism and a society based on it as Ancapistan, a fictional world where such a society/country exists

Kie mi povas trovi aŭ legi tiun libron? (La danĝera lingvo) Esperanto has a fourth generation of speakers; I think that's enough of proof that it didn't fail as a language (but as international....well, it is international but not in gigantic proportions like English).

In serious now: for me "doing" esperanto (esperantumi) is like playing Chess might be for certain others; I just do it for the doing. ×Who would attack the game of Chess and for what reason? Too much regicide, or is it the knights and bishops?

I’m late to the party here but I’ve come to the conclusion that Esperanto (or something like it I suppose) is crucial to the preservation of other cultures and languages. The big languages are grinding the small ones to powder; Esperanto gives the little guys hope.

Comparing Esperanto to a cult? The guy obviously knows little to nothing about Esperanto. Its a language (and somewhat a culture, some might say), but comparing it a cult is excessive. Why would anyone criticize a language created with the intention to encourage easy communication & world-peace? Forget him and his ignorant statements. Kudos to you for helping keep Esperanto alive. :)

Learning a language is a very long and hard task; moreover, just a small amount of people are talented enough to deal with this terrible domain of knowledge, and I'm not this kind of guy - the majority is not. Our respective national language are something precious, because of our identiy and culture, but we live in time of human connexion and we have to find / to create tools to better understand each other; Esperanto is a pretty good one and surely some others in the futur will improve it or propose something different. Esperanto is a solution for humbe people; without it, it would be difficult to easily talk to people without studying during a long time difficult languages like chinese, german, russian or french (even if this last one is my native language). Esperanto gave me a third language and a community to speak with; I'm pretty happy of that, and I became interested more about languages thanks to it. The solution to connect people is everywhere: in our natural languages and in constructed languages equally. Some people - esperantist or not -, are learning Toki Pona, Interlingua, Lojban and numerous of other constructed languages, because humanity construction is a work in progress task. Personnaly, I'm happy to learn new things in Esperanto and to practice it from time to time on social networks like Twitter, Mastodon or Nubo.re (Facebook-like for esperantist), but I'm also learning another constructed language which is promising: "Lingwa De Planeta"; I wouldn't say that it'll be the next popular and widely spoken language, but it has pretty interesting ideas to explore. He certainly has a very closed minded interpretation of Esperantujo. He even goes so far as to insult the people who devote time and energy to learning or using the language. I've seen his videos on this topic. You don't have to like the language, there are many who don't. So why be so abrasive about it? It hurts your credibility.

thanks for all the explanation, the best part was when you said you were capitalism, I have a clear idea about esperanto, it seems interesting and funny, I like the concept of old version of duolingo or bad google translate, for me I will give it a try just because I love the learning process, I write with both hands, I play many instruments, I learn french and chinese despite my native language is spanish so I do like the challenges, I know for what I hear esperanto is everything except a challenge but I would like to meet a person from other culture that I can have a fun because, in other comunities like french sometimes the people just doesn't care, mmmm I don't know how to explain sometimes a native speaker feels like is making you "the favor" and it doesn't feel like a exchange, sometimes I feel like you have to FIT in the culture and follow their rules, obey what it's already written in that culture and language that sometimes you feel like a total stranger, you can't connect with anyone because they exclued you for not have born and not understand the idiosioncracy, well maybe you will never read that, but as I said thanks for clarify everything, I just want it to have a fun and give it a try just for spend a good time, by the way to acomplish the chinese it will take a long long time ahead :) ...

I agree with your response to this person who said that Esperanto was cultish and associated with political/communism. He seems to be thinking this is the backdrop for the establishment of "The New World Order." Frankly, I find the languages that are most popular are the languages that bring the most money to the elitists that this fellow seems to be afraid of. For example, it seems everyone and their uncle is learning Mandarin. Ask yourself why. Esperanto seems to be the language for people who want to communicate with people; not in order to make money but to talk to people from around the world.

I´m currently on erasmus in Warsaw (where Unua libro was published) and on Saturday I went to birthplace of dr-o Esperanto - Bialystok. As autodidactic polyglot I naturally bought the book in Zamenhof center and started to learn. Esperanto estos mia oka lingvon. I searched some to listen and I landed on that exact podcast. I wasn´t too strong to listen him for all time. I agree with like 100 % you told here. This dude said there something like: "There were reasearches that Esperanto should help with learning a language. Yes it will but because your target would be you 3rd and not second. When you want to speak French you don´t waste time on Esperanto, because it´s easier. It´s like when you want to play violin, so you learn how to play guitar, because it´s easier." It was last thing I was able to hear, because he clearly has no idea about music learning. Yeah you don´t learn guitar, when you want violin. But there is group of instruments called wind and nearly every wind musician played the same instrument - recorder. Why? They teach you on this instrument the basics of music and your breathing. Same with Esperanto. He also mentioned how Esperanto failed, because it didn´t fulfil the idea, because the word speaks English. As Czech, who´s language was opressed by Germans for like 5 centuries, I have to learn that language to speak to the world, but he has naturally, so he shouldn´t even speak about this, because his (and your, but you get it) was never opressed like this.

Thanks for taking time for a detailed video response, mate. Respect. I've had an internal debate for ages about doing a follow-up (video/blog post) to respond to the endless criticisms I've received. Some points do need to be readdressed or clarified on my part (e.g. the fact that people call me anti-Semitic is absolutely hysterical). Your video has motivated me to respond. While I still disagree on most of your points, you at least convinced me that not all Esperantists are socialist Greens voters. There may be hope yet.

-Stan isn’t Arabic, it’s persian and is used in that part of the world as well as the caucuses. It specifically ISNT used on the Arabian peninsula, basically at all.

I've seen a few videos where someone declares they won't learn Esperanto because it is dea or useless or not enough people speak it. However, it is precisely this mindset and refusal to learn that slows its spread and stops people from learning it.

ABalphabeta made two videos about Esperanto. One of them is where he speaks a poem written in Zamenhof's "Proto-Esperanto" and in the other, he reads poems in other "forms" of Esperanto, one of them being a pseudo-archaic form of Esperanto created for fun. You should check them out.

I'm sorry, I know it's a minor point, but it bothers me to no end when people say "I'm a capitalist" when they mean "I'm for capitalism". A "capitalist" is someone in a particular social class, not someone of any particular ideology. The ideology behind capitalism is Liberalism, and I understand that the US ruined the proper name for the rest of the world, so many people avoid its use. I'd prefer "I'm for capitalism" or "I'm economically liberal", "liberalist", almost anything, as long as it's not "I'm a capitalist". About that argument that Esperanto has no culture (I'm tempted to call it a "meme" rather than "argument"). It's true that the internal culture is not as developed as most national cultures. It's probably more comparable to a geek fandom, a religious ritual, an urban tribe, or some other sub-culture thing. But who cares? The point about the language is to provide a bridge to all cultures, not to a single one, so in a sense, Esperanto's culture is made of all cultures where there's an Esperantist you can talk with.

Zamenhof never wanted Esperanto to replace national languages including English : the only problem is that English is not neutral but imperial, defended by big guns and big money and used to impose an ideology, which French also does. Even in a world where most money was to be exchanged in English, Esperanto would provide English-speakers themselves with a non-imperial language without class distinctions and without an ideology. Translating from a small language such as Hebrew or Modern Greek into Esperanto is easy, translating from the same small language into French or English is very difficult and doesn't go without much loss of content.

The fact that this guy wrote this post in English says that he likes or at least has to understand how important it is to learn an international language, and pretty much thats the main reason we learn it! Let it be connected to everyone equally to prevent some groups of people hating the former of the language to get more speakers and just giving people a much more easy language to learn. This whole thing is not related to any politics, you have to acknowledge the importance of an international language no matter pf your political views. I am personally a nationalist for my country and have right wing views for the most part.

The only thing I find weird about spoken Esperanto is that most speakers appear to always pronounce vowel combinations as hiatuses (which is actually the prescribed pronunciation) and to pronounce most stressed vowels as long vowels while keeping the unreduced pronunciation of unstressed vowels. It sounds pretty unnatural TBH. Personally I think that turning the hiatuses into diphthongs and using a Spanish intonation (syllable-timed) would make it sound far more natural.

You use a long time talking about culture, but I that maybe both of you are wrong in what you think culture is. You having your own lingo, nicknames, stories and jokes with yout friends? Guess what, that's a shared culture! You go to work. Your workplace probably has its own culture, it's own unwritten rules of do's and dont's, its own stories, myths (maybe not myths except for That One, but you get my drift) In this regard esperanto has culture. There's the epic facebook battles of the fundamentistoj and kontrawfundamentistoj, that's culture. There's pasporta servo, esperanto speakers when using esperanto are more hospitable, more kind, more honest. Culture doesn't need super long to develop. Culture doesn't need physical proof like books, or events, or history. Just you getting in an fight over gi should be an accepted pronoun or not is proof that esperanto is culture. Whether or not this disproves any claims, i do not know, but there is a widespread misconception on what culture actually in its rawest form is. I tried to find any good sources that proves my claims, but none sufficiently in english, but here my culture textbook is anyways: ndla.no/subjects/subject:18

A third interpretation of the -stan thing comes from reading (at least Norwegian translations of) Donald Duck comics. "Langtvekkistan" (far-away-stan) is sometimes used about a far-away country, either metaphorically or possibly even about a real country within the story's universe. Uncle Scrooge will, for example, threaten to send his nephew to Langtvekkistan (though more often to Siberia) - which supports one of your two suggestions, but I would say it's not necessarily demonized any more than what's implied in the fact that the place is far away (it'll be an arduous journey) and that the culture will be *different* (complications, not necessarily conflicts) and/or homogenous unto itself - like our friend here suggests about Esperanto.

The accusative case in esperanto and it's eclectic combination seams strange to me. Interlingua is more natural as a romance language.

Very few people learn languages for fun and anyone who does so could be considered a "crackpot" regardless of the language learned. Most people learn languages because they HAVE to, or because the perceive a real benefit in terms of career or future advantages. Esperanto speakers are no more crackpots than someone who learns Irish or French or Polish WHEN THEY DON'T HAVE TO.

Unfortunate to see people conflate communism with authoritarian state capitalism with no intentions of achieving Communism. Communism is a cashless, stateless, classless society. Soviet Russia and Mao China and all the others, are NONE of those criteria. Even more so when we factor in having democracy not only in politics, but also in the workplace, and then as a sub category is abolishing the commodity form of making things to sell it for profit (which is hard to do, given the things already mentioned). They're just not Communist under any standard definition of what Communism is. Very unfortunate that it has to be conflated with this stuff. If we wanna talk death, Capitalism absolutely dwarfs that other version of capitalism at the time ("communism"). But yea it's not at all easy to get to that stage (especially with all the things intentionally holding it back). But that's wayyyy down the line. Socialism doesn't need to entail Communism, or even getting rid of currency and markets. Worker co-ops are shown to be very effective, and better in endless ways (which is essentially Socialism done right there, along with a democratic election system. Not hard to attain it). So there's good stepping stones here that stand on their own, and that we should all be pushing towards (even right-wingers). It's usually just that they have such an unfortunate understanding of what these things are, and a deep emotional aversion to such things. As far as the reason for Esperanto in the first place, it's naturally going to have a lot more left leaning individuals, but yea not exclusively. As far as the ends of the spectrum go, Esperanto is quite fitting for a Communist, but is VERY antithetical to a Fascist. "Communist" as in, the actual definition. As far as the shitty authoritarian state capitalist version of what people think "Communism" is, that is not overly fitting of Esperanto, as far as the original motivations and intentions behind the language. Not that everyone has to give a shit about the original intentions and motivations, but that would shape a lot of people's views on the language when they were first learning about what it was and if they're interested or not. Plus, it still acts as a very good bridge language anyway, and people who learn other languages are I'd say more likely to be left leaning generally, unless it's just like, the most "western", "whitest" culture language they can find. Even then, they're probably going to develop some empathy for immigrants when it comes to the English language lol.

Very good video! However, I do not think it resolves the idea that Esperanto has been a political movement, or tied up in some sort of ulterior motive. At its core, Esperanto's philosophy is (as it seems to me) that if everyone spoke the same language, and was able to clearly communicate with each other, then barriers between different cultures and peoples would be broken down. At a basic level, this is a kind of political statement, and Esperanto is the vehicle for this. Personally, while I speak competent Esperanto, I would not want to use it because I think that this philosophy is unachievable. I would prefer to learn a more neutral IAL, and one which has more reasonable goals, or one which is not tied to a larger movement or political philosophy.

This sounds like the proselytizing of a religious nut.

The spirit of Esperanto is of everyone adopting this universal, efficient language for communication, thereby mutually abandoning their own languages. This would serve to cut the most obvious ties to one's own culture, history, tradition, in favor of global commonality among all humans. In my opinion, this language was purposed as a [destructive] tool for destroying distinctions between peoples and cultures. I'm not opposed to learning it, but it was intentionally created as a means to an ideological end, as opposed to more spontaneous origins of other languages. If one is to take an ideological stance on language, I'd rather it be for the sake of recognition or preservation of culture and identity, as opposed to the abandonment of it.

This is the most popular Esperanto channel? This is how you know there's no where near 2 million speakers, like so many claim, if the most popular channel can only get 73k views on the most popular video and the vast majority of videos have a couple of thousand of views each.

Mi scias, ke ĉi tiu video estas malnova, sed ĝi aperis al mi hazarde dum mi retumas sur RU-vid kaj temas pri subjekton, kiun mi ankaŭ vizaĝas lastatempe en mia lando, Brazilo. Mi spektis videon de brazilano lingvokreinto, kiu malbonparolis pri esperanto (do mi ekkontraŭargumentis lin, hehe). Nu, mi ne tute spektis ĉi tiun videon, sed mi konas iomete pri Denovan kaj ankaŭ imoete pri Evildea. Mi reiris al RU-vid por spekti kelkajn videon de Evildea, ĉar mi memoris kiam mi eklernis esperanton (22-a aŭgusto de 2022). Mi ne tute komprenis kiam li parolas la lingvon, sed nun mi povas kompreni preskaŭ ĉion. Do, eklernis esperanton, ĉar mi volus senti kiel estas kiam oni bone lernas lingvon. Mi lernas ankaŭ la francan kaj la ĉinan, sed ĉi tiuj lingvoj ne estas tiel facilaj kiel esperanto. Mi nur bezonis tri monatojn por lerni la fundamentoj kaj poste nur daŭris la lernadon iom per iom. Mi ankaŭ, kiel Denovan, estas kristana. En mia lando, esperanto estas tre fama por la spiritismaj verkoj, tial kelkaj homoj eble pripensas, ke la lingvo estas por spiritismo. Dum mia esperanta lernado, mi legis spiritisman libron, kiu temis pri la vivo de Zamenhof. Mi opinias, ke la verko estis bonega kaj mi povis lerni multe el ĝi. Fakte, Zamenhof havis filozofion bazita en la sekulara humanismo. Kiel kristana, mi ege malkonsentas, eĉ pli ĉar Zamenhof vidis Dion nek kiel persona Dio, sed nur kiel nepersona forteco. La problemo, finfine, restas en la koncepto de pripensi, ke ĉiuj povus kredi unu “dion” kiel ĉi tiu nepersona dion, pli kiel forteco. Mi opinias, ke ĉi tiu estas senseco, ĉar la vera filozofo devas serĉi la veron (mi scias, ke hodiaŭ ne estas tre simple, ĉar ni vivas en la postvera mondo). Nur diri “kredu en unu neŭtrala dio kaj ĉi tiu dio estas la sama kiel vi kredas en via religio”, nu, estas senseco. Se ĉiuj pravas, tiam neniu pravas pri ĉi tiu temo. =S Nu, mi skribis super pli por montri, ke eble tiu estas la plej bona maniero de klarigi kial kristanoj povus kontraŭargumenti pri Zamenhof kaj siaj ideoj. Ni ankaŭ havas “problemon” en Brazilo, ĉar preskaŭ nur “specifa” grupo ŝatas esperanton. Kiam mi vidas la emblemon de BEJO en Brazilo, la emblemo estas virino montrante la brakon kiel la komunisma kaj feminisma propagando. Pro tio oni klare vidas, ke kelkefoje esperanto suferas por esti “naŭtrala” lingvo, ĉar parto de la movado havi iliajn ideologiojn. Tiu estas normala, en ajna lando la popolo havas iliajn aliajn ideologiojn ankaŭ, sed por la esperantista movado ĉi tiu estas problemo, sub miaj okuloj, ĉar ĝi deklaras ĝian propran karakterizan kiel estante “neŭtrala”. (Do, ĉi tie oni povas vidi, ke esti “neŭtrala” estas neeble, hehe). Do, por kristanoj, ideologioj kiel feminismo, komunismo, la kultura marksismo, ĝenerale, estas problema por ni, ĉar ili portas tre fortan materiisman pensmanieron kaj mondvidon. Kaj por niaj sperto, malfeliĉe ni vidas la danĝeron por la mondo kiam kelkaj homoj pensas adoptante tiujn pensimarieon, do ni timegas kio povus ozaki pli malbone en la estonteco. Eble tion, kion mi diris ŝajnas kiel senseco por oni legante mian tekston, mi tute komprenas, sed mi ne povus klarigi pri tiu nur skribante malgrandajn liniojn, mi pardonpetas. Sed mi bezonas konsenti kun Evildea, ĉar mi opinias, ke esperanto estas nur lingvo. Kaj kia lingvo! Mi ne scias kiel mi povas esprimi ĉi tion, sed mi amas lingvojn kiel esperanto. Mi nur povas parola bone la anglan, mi estis enamiĝita de la angla kiam mi estis infano, kaj mi vidis, ke la angla havas tre specifajn vortojn kaj estas tre klara kiam oni legas ĝin. Mi ne pensas, ke mia propra denaska lingvo estas tiel klara por legi kiel en la angla. Mi ankaŭ sentas tion kiam mi uzas la esperantan. Oni povus esprimi multe detalojn uzante la esperantan. Tiu estas mia kialo lernante la esperantan, ĉar mi opinias, ke ĝi estas tre logika lingvo kaj ĉi tiu karakterizo estas mia motivo por lerni ĝin. Hodiaŭ mi uzas la lingvon por skribi mian taglibron, por preĝi kaj por legi la Biblion. Mi volas estontece paroli kun miaj pastroj kaj eble krei socian projekton por instrui la lingvon senkoste en la preĝejo. En Brazilo, plimulto de la brazilanoj ne povas paroli bone alilandajn lingvojn. Mi opinias, ke la esperanto povas helpi ilin por post eklerni aliajn lingvojn kiel la angla, la franca kaj la hispana, ekzemple. Finfine, Evildea, dankon por viaj videoj, mi ne sekvas vian kanalon ĉiumomente, sed estas bonan fonton por ĉiuj, kiuj volas konsumi kvalitajn esperantajn videojn.
