IDEA for future video in the shop during winter -- I would really like to see cleaning and sharpening of garden tools over the winter to be ready for the spring. Single woman here, I struggle with this!!! Also, don't forget to share with us any "projects" your wife can get you to complete in the house!!! LOL

In my experience chickens can handle cold weather. As long as there isn't a draft under their roost. I would go for it and use the green house. Do a little research on open air poultry houses and cold weather. I practice open air chicken house. I live in Canada where cold is the norm, Eh! Cheers!!

same here... they handle -35'C last winter - I will move them into the greenhouse. I only have 2 and I feel they will prefer the space, light and the fact that there will be soil and not wood and snow.

You could hang a plastic curtain in the middle of the greenhouse, to make the room smaller...

if you want to ripen your tomatoes a little faster and get more of a large harvest all at once toss chopped up apples under the plants. i usually just quarter the apples can be left whole they put off a gas that causes ripening to happen before frost takes them all out with heaps of green ones left on the vines.
@FarmFreshIB

I wonder if you could just move the new chick shaw into the greenhouse? That would give them a warm place to sleep at night when it is the coldest. During the day they can take quite a bit of cold as long as they are awake, out of the drafts and weather and well fed.

Simeon, thank you for sharing your daily life on the Swedish Homestead. Is it possible to segment the greenhouse and rotate the chickens through the different "rooms" of the greenhouse over the winter. Similar in concept to moving them in the pastures with the chicken tractor?

Mabe offer an segment of the greenhouse for the 50 chicks separated with an layer of plastic? You can test it and in case of sucess the compost is where you need it right away.

I recently found your channel and I was so inspired by it, specially your chicken + greenhouse project since we live in the same country. Sorry to hear that it didn't fully work out, I am soo tempted to try this on my own with a small greenhouse or tunnel.

I thought you just needed to keep the chickens dry and out of the wind. I didn't think the temp would be a problem. I was going to do this w/ my 50ft greenhouse but I only have about 20 chickens... maybe I will just keep them in their summer shed over the winter then.

Great 👍 job. Best of luck 👌🐔🐔 🐔🐔 There are professional chicken houses East of me with over 50,000 chickens per house. They begin with curtains and as they grow are removed. Gas heating may run $50,000.00/month when near freezing and 400 foot long houses IIRC. It's strange to walk in there and see how many and wonder what to do if they decided to attack 😊. And the strong ammonia smell 😷👃.

Dr. Mark in Texas Maybe add more litter, mulch and less ammonia smell. We use baking soda and pine pellets with the horses.

Simeon, loved the video as always. Was very sorry to hear about the mining on your land. I hope everything works out for your family in the end. Got a quick question for you. I am sorry if you have already addressed this. You mentioned you don't have enough chickens to heat the greenhouse so I was wondering what is the magic number as far as chickens per square foot to keep the greenhouse warm enough? I would like to try this method one day and was trying to figure out how many chickens I would need to keep it up. Thanks and really love your channel!
@haybloomer

I think his greenhouse is 900 square foot, and I know he said 300-400 chickens would be enough. Hope this helps

Wow, 50 chickens isn't enough to help heat a greenhouse? Your GH must be pretty big then. Your tomato plants look very different than any I have seen around here in the USA. I am GUESSING they are a special variety for growing in a greenhouse. I think I will start some cherry tomatoes in my GH next spring. I just am having trouble with MY greenhouse getting so much hotter than outside temps, maybe in early spring that will NOT be an issue. It will be about 20 degrees colder outside than inside my GH, and I am using NO heat yet, that is a good thing for in the depths of winter BUT I doubt that in winter it WILL be like that. I have a problem with keeping some plants hydrated now with all that heat, I water every day BUT I had one plant die on me from the heat. You are lucky to have animals to use their poop to enrich your soil, i only have dogs and cats now, I did have 2 bunnies and their litter made great compost.

We have a question regarding the chickens. What color are the legs of the chicks when first hatched, yellow or blue? Thank you for you the wonderful video. Marc and Paulette, Michigan U.S.A.
@gartengeflugel924
@gartengeflugel924 6 лет назад
Marc B Chicks hatch with blue legs, but the intensity of the color changes from a lighter blue to a much darker one when they get older. The same is true for yellow, green and black legged chicks. Only the white legged chickens have yellow legs as chicks. Though I am not Simeon, I hope I could help you

Can you plant garlic in the greenhouse to get an early crop in the spring.
@markethomesteading1972

He could plant garlic and have garlic greens earlier, but the tunnel won't make it mature faster. Garlic is daylight sensitive and starts to bulb after the summer solstice.
