I love all the insulation info, the attention to detail is most welcome. I gave your channel a shout out on the "Scott Brown Carpentry" channel. Scott is retro insulating his own home, and on a steep learning curve, keep up the great work, love from Western Australia!

You're not being fussy with the insulation Tim your install and attention to detail is how it should be. I want to build a simple offgrid cabin and i will be insulating the walls and ceiling exactly the same way. Its going to be so well insulated and sealed it could be heated with a candle Lol

Looks good Tim! Insulation should be done well or better left out. I think you are doing a top job like this and will feel soon enough that you have made your life a lot better this way.

Have you given any thought to making airtight and insulating the joint between the two trailers? Loving the detail you're putting into the insulation. Makes me feel less rediculous for when I faff with insulation details.

Since Gapotape isn't sold in 50mm sizes what I ended up doing was cutting the boards slightly short (5mm each side) and then using packers + foam to glue the board in solid, then taking the packers out and filling those holes too.

I can see some form of ventilation gap above the PIR but I'm not quite sure how much, is it something like 50mm perhaps?

Very impressive video, but what about the warm ridge beam which supports your cold roof. If it pierces the insulated envelope you might get condensation within the cold timber?

Would be interesting to see what your finished U value is. Anything below 0.30 would be very good, there is only so much you can do given your size and weight constraints. While you can't expect miracles, 0.30 is better than a lot of houses so will be comfortable in all seasons.
@philbooth319
@philbooth319 Год назад
Below 0.3 is not 'very good' by any measure to be honest and that can be achieved with just 50mm PIR board. Even the old building regs which have just been replaced required U=0.18 in this roof scenario and new regs is lower again. That said, the spec they are using here is likely to achieve approx 0.2 W/m2K which is a great effort for temporary and mobile home but a fair way off achieving current regs and passive house standard (U

Are you installing any kind of mechanical ventilation? The more you insulate, the more you need to ventilate. All the best!

Is the exposed ridge beam not going to be an issue from an insulation/cold spot point of view? Or will you be doing something to it? Really good and clear explanation of the difference between a warm and cold roof 👍

With a completed sealed room you must still have fresh air so I assume you will be installing some form of ventilation system

Hi Tim, another great informative vid! Can I ask (as I'm a novice) - are you screwing the battening for the plasterboard to the joist though the PIR? I'm guessing you are going run the battening in the opposite direction to the joists? (horizontal?) With 25mm batons? Sorry for all the Q's but about to rip a lot of plasterboard down to inset PIR in my extension roof (done before we moved in) and then replace it all....... Many thanks😀
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple Год назад
This one I screwed battens through straight where the rafters were so in line but you can do either.

Hi Tim, Are you plastering or tape and joint? You’ve probably already thought about this but tape and joint might be better because of movement ect and believe it or not weight. Great vids always a pleasure to watch. Tim
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple Год назад
No it won’t be a full skim as like you say it all adds weight. Joints will be taped but corners will be covered with a trim I think as if it’s going to crack it will be there. Ceiling lightweight cladding type.

I bought one of those saw blades (wavy) for the jig saw to cut the same boards you've got and they didn't work. Long Stanley knife (with blades that stick out longer, stiletto type worked the best (Magnusson). Or pizza cutter obvs. The blades didn't stay perpendicular to the board so to speak, but bent.
@LocostR1
@LocostR1 Год назад
If they're the Bosch ones, I also found them a bit hit and miss in the jigsaw but try gripping the blade tight in a pair of mole grips and use it as a manual knife instead. Using a bit of straight wood like Tim or a chunky 1.2m spirit level like I did and cutting about 20-30mm per pass you can get really consistent nice square cuts
@NewcastleMatt
@NewcastleMatt Год назад
@@LocostR1 interesting, will give that a go next time. And yeah it was the Bosch ones.

I ground the teeth off a long (9" ish) reciprocating saw blade - they are stiff - to replicate the profile of bread knife. Then reciprocating saw worked great on 120 mm thick boards. Fast, safer, and no dust.

Would you clarify if I can put insulation boards on the underside of a cold, flat felted roof building that currently has no heating or should I create a void between the underside of the OSB and the top of the insulation board? Thanks,
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple Год назад
I would leave a vented gap, the other option being to lay insulation. over the top and fit new Edam/felt above that if possible,

Did you consider at all using the insulated panels as roofing like you used with your workshop? I'm planning a similar build to this and looking into using them for the roof.
