Absolute Domination through 4 weeks of football, repeatedly being the best player for the hawkeyes... If this doesn't get him nominations I don't know what will.
This is the stupidest argument I’ve ever heard. This guy is a little better than other punters, but punters do not make a big impact on the game compared to quarterbacks wide receivers and running backs. This is nothing but nonsense. This guy won’t get one vote for Heisman.
What has impressed me watching Tory is his timing. He senses the rush and if there is none he will pause for a second and let his players run down the field. This even led to one of our guys catching a punt in the air to down it.
One of their games was against FCS, but they were the 2nd ranked in the FCS, and this year the FCS has dominated FBS teams with teams like Sac State whooping Colorado State, and Utah State losing big to Weber State. The FCS teams that constantly beat the FBS teams need to be moved to the Pac12 when they lose a few teams next year. Sac State, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Weber State, Montana and Montana State should be in the FBS anyway.
well it's not exactly hard to have a guy catch their own punt. you can have your guys wait even like 1-2 seconds before running and get them to catch their own punt. punters can punt the ball so high, you or i could catch their punts. not taking away from your point, just saying that's not always the case. you can catch your own punt easily by just having the punter punt it high. thats how some of those punts that land out of the air at the 1 yard line will get a bounce and not go towards the end zone. the punt the ball angled so that it is going end over end, and also punt it very high too. they can put the ball so high some pro punters can full strength punt the ball like 20 yards. that's why some don't do coffin corner kicks. they just kick it straight, high, and end over end and hope for a good bounce
@@GeoJesse yes, but as a punter it's better to coffin corner it because even if you are punting Aussie style it can roll forward when it hits the ground. I mean I watch a lot of football and at the NFL and College level it's not often that the punt is caught in air.
Thanks for recognizing a critical but unnoticed part of football. When I’m watching a game I try to recognize the effect of field position. It dictates the type of plays and strategies coaches use so it has a huge impact. I agree this young man deserves recognition.
@@cliff5066 but they all do punt. Punting is like the backup generator. When the lights go out, you want one that is reliable. With skills like his, he could fit well with a defensive oriented nfl team. Could possibly even turn some games around for those punt heavy teams that are averaging 5-6 punts a game.
As an Iowa fan, this guy's been just about the only bright spot for the team, if we even had the offense of a MAC team we'd be looking pretty good, but alas, aside from defense and punting, this year will be nothing but pain
@@XCodes petras is mediocre at his very best. Which is ok. He’s as good as he can be and Padilla isn’t any better. Alabama won the national championship with Jake Coker (who was pretty bad). A good OC would call plays based on our offenses strengths and weaknesses and he just doesn’t. No PA passes. No slant routes. Either run or watch petras miss a ~20 yard pass. I’m a UI student and while petras is very hated I feel bad. Dude can’t go on campus. I have a mutual that says he’s brutally depressed because he really puts the blame on himself. Athletic coordinator needs to fire Brian but he’s the one that hired him in the first place 🙃
Great story! I never would have realized how good this play is. Also shocking how bad Iowa's offense is. Defense is keeping the team in the game. Punter is a hero in this season so far.
I'm not a football fan, a college sports fan, or anyone else that would normally watch videos like this, but I have never seen punting this good. I'm a soccer goalie, so punting the ball (a spherical ball) is a big part of my game, and the degree of precision, timing, and power control on display here is insane. You've convinced me.
@@raylopez99 Is that strange? The sports aren't very similar, despite their common origins. Oh, unless you mean soccer = football, in which case I meant American football.
The camera angle + video games make people underestimate just how difficult this is. When you're standing there on the field and you have 8 guys standing in front of you blocking your view, it's really difficult to land your punt within 5 or 10 yards of where you want it. What this guy is doing is amazing, and at a NFL level.
Hell yeah it's hard. I wanted to be a punter in high school especially being that back in the 90s there weren't any black punters. I wanted to be the first one, but man it was hard as hell. To try and hit the ball at the right spot with the foot, and then try to get the right hangtime.....and don't even get me started on directional kicking. Coffin corner punts are hard af to consistently do. Learned the hard way that punting in Madden and punting in real life are two different things. But I at least gave it a shot. Mad respect to punters since then.
I remember when I supposed to punt for jv and on paper it's easy but with having to catch a snap plus the defense coming for your throat I never played punter again 😂
Seems like the Heisman is only given to 5 stars, protected by 5 stars, handing off to 5 stars. But it would be nice to give it out based on the stated merits of the award for a change.
I believe I remember seeing a stat that when Iowa punt 6 or more times they have a record of 6-1. Im pretty sure this was before Michigan so it’s 6-2. Now but considering that stat line by all logic should be reversed is crazy in its self.
If no one in the Heisman committee votes for Taylor for the biggest award, Taylor should be a shoe-in for the Ray Guy Award, which does go to the best punter in college football.
Yes. Sometimes your best offensive weapon is a kicker. Just think if Iowa had an offense. My son did similar in hs. Ave 52 yes per game. It was great to finally see them 50 yards down field for the set point. The first two games they didn't and often the guy was running with the ball going over his head. Memories.
Punters don’t directly create or eliminate scoring. They give you a better chance at doing one or the other, but their actions can be negated every time with a poor performance by the people who are on the field more than 10 plays a game, like a punter. If your punter is your game changer, something is wrong
This would be historic and I wonder how long will it be that we get another chance to see punter do what he's doing again? It should happen just simply to show unbiased voting cause no punter has ever been this effective to over all wins, showing that every player on a team contributes to a win even the kickers.
He had 0 punts inside the 20 against Michigan and you guys were hyping this dude up as heisman and saying he could be the reason Iowa beats Michigan. You guys are not different or have some advanced knowledge of football you’re just really really dumb. Talking about heisman for a punter especially one who couldn’t pin a team inside their 20 in 5 tries 😂
I recently graduated from Iowa state and having to watch Taylor put us on the one yard line or close to consistently is the most annoying thing. People often forget in the 2021 season he pinned the cyclones behind the 20 consistently being one of the first games I remember Iowa state having 450 some yard of offense and still losing to Iowa who had only 100 yards of offense. It’s because of Tory that game was 27-17 Iowa win
When a team has a good defense and struggling offense... An elite punter can massively help a team. In 2017 Tom Herman was in his first year at Texas following a bad season that got Charlie Strong fired. Their offense was super inconsistent but the defense was decent. Michael Dickson was their punter and I watched all season as that dude completely carried that team. They went 7-6 that year but I guaruntee if they had even an pretty good punter... They win no more than 4-5 games. That offense would go ice cold sometimes and Dickson was totally flip the field position and force the other team to always have to drive 70-90 yards on every possession no matter where Texas kicked from. It helped their defense soooo much and absolutely saved their offense from constantly having to start drives from their own redzone. That was not a 7 win team... It was a sub 500 team with the best punter in the country.
@Isaac Punts Idk if you have ever heard of a punter from Nebraska Alex Henery(2010 was his senior year), but he was a dominating force as a Punter and Place Kicker. He averaged 43.2 years per punt, placed 26 of his punts inside the 20, and had 17 punts go over 50 yards. His Kicking Skills were even better than his punting skills. He made 68 of 76 field goals and made 193 of 194 PATs. That game him a combined accuracy of 96.7% and a field goal accuracy percentage of 89.5%. His senior year was also the third season he scored over 100 points (career total 397). What I am trying to say is, if he didn’t get any votes, this guy definitely won’t.
If you want the link to his page, I will happily provide it. RU-vid doesn’t want me to post a link (I never comment so idk how long that’s been a thing)
I wish they (the heisman voters) would take a broader view than "the Qb of the one of the top 5 teams" for consideration. I know there have been a few non QBs in semi recent history but yeah...this punter is doing some special things. Not sure if it's heisman level but he deserves more recognition than just special team awards
I was at the Rutgers game and when Tory got his punt towards the end of the game people were shouting MVP and as a defiantly unbiased Iowa fan I think he should win the Heisman
I was a big time Miami Dolphins fan as a kid and I remember the great Reggie Roby Well, I believe he was a high draft pick and paid dividends immediately for a long time as a Dolphin.
The only thing about Taylor that hinders a Heisman campaign is the fact that Iowa on average starts at their own 42 yard line on offense. Iowa's NET punt average is 42 yards, while players like Bryce Baringer of MSU and Joe Doyle of Memphis NET 45+ yards with longer average yards per kick.Taylor also trails both of those kickers in average punt distance and hangtime. Taylor is rock solid and I won't deny that - but he's not quite the best in the NCAA.
My question, I've had forever. Is a Punter a offensive or defensive player, in this case, very much offensive. Im a Hawkeye fan and he's definitely impresses me every game. I would give him my vote for sure!
Fast forward 9 days... Hello 👋 it's reality here! Vs Michigan Taylor: 5 punts, 48.2 yd avg, 0 in20, 53 long Michigan punter: 4, 43.0, 2, 51 Vs Illinois Taylor: 8, 40.9, 3, 49 Illinois punter: 6, 41.5, 4, 47 Total for past 2 games Taylor: 13, 43.7, 3, 53 Opposition: 10, 42.1, 6, 51 3 of 13 inside the 20 vs 6 of 10 While maintaining a similar average Maybe he just had a lot of lucky bounces.
This is more of an indictment of Iowa’s offense. They have the second-worst offense in the country, and they’ve played South Dakota State and Nevada. Any punter’s numbers will be inflated. For instance, San Diego State has the fifth worst offense, and their punter has similar numbers to Taylor. There’s a strong correlation between number of punts and average yard per punt.
This guy is a great punter, no doubt, but there are a few things worth pointing out. He benefits from having 3 running backs setting up a wall to give him a ton of time to direct his kick. No NFL team sets up like this. Iowa’s long snapper has an arm like John Elway…..he is throwing lasers
As a Michigan fan, I would rather have an offense that can move the ball and score. The fact that Taylor gets so many opportunities is not good. A good offense will eventually break through Iowa’s defense and score anyway. Iowa needs to move the ball like they did in the 4th quarter, but by then the game was already out of reach. Not taking anything away from Taylor, but this should not really even be a discussion. Tory had 5 punts against Michigan averaging 48 yards, but this was not a factor in the game at all because the defense could not get stops, and the offense did not score.
He is doing what Mike Scifres did for the Chargers, especially in a famous playoff game vs Peyton Manning's Colts in a game where many writers said he was the real MVP of that game.
Actually neither of you are right. It’s simply the most outstanding player. Subjective of course. There’s nothing defined about impact. Never has been. No Heismann voter is going to mention the most impact, most valuable, or anything else. Simply the most outstanding.
@@slpguy6026 thank you. It’s not the best, most valuable, or most impactful. It is most outstanding. To most people it seems like splitting hairs, but there is a difference, and that’s why the heisman winner doesn’t always win the maxwell, walter camp, AP player of the year, and/or the Archie griffin awards.
“most impactful player in COLLEGE FOOTBALL” you just mention all the reasons IOWA is not complete garbage. i feel click-baited! well he gets your vote haha respect
He is a great punter. He will win the Ray Guy award, and may be the highest ever draft pick spent on a punter. And will make millions at the next level. Because special teams really can win you games in the NFL. But no way will he win the Heisman award. And he will be in the league 20 years. This year's Heisman may be in the league for 5.
The Heisman has long ago changed in for what it is awarded. The trophy is to the "Outstanding" football player. In 1987, a player at Holy Cross rarely left the field, playing both safety and as a running back and receiver on offense. He was a two-time All-American on defense and gained over 2000 yards on offense, and he also played special teams. The first guy in about 20 years to play both ways on the level. Truly OUTSTANDING! But, Gordie Lockbaum did not win the Heisman, Tim Brown did. Sure, Brown was a better Pro, but what he did was really not as OUTSTANDING as playing both ways. Maybe a Punter deserves consideration, maybe he really is that OUTSTANDING, but I would be surprised if he appears on more than three ballots.
If Dennis Eckersley can win 1992 MLB American League Cy Young and MVP awards (as have a few other closers) than Tory should have Heisman consideration and/or the win. I love when game-changing players at improbable positions upset the norms and make us rethink the sport, how and what we value and award. Great video! Way more fun than current politics and abundant true crime. Thank you!
really cool take, somethign to consider though: it is possible that the reason the offense averages only 232 yards per game (considered low) might be because their offensive drives have less opportunity to reach a high number due to the success of taylors punts. So while taylor is the reason for this i wouldnt say its "taylor bailing out a poor offense" as much as it is "taylor putting his offense in such a high quality position that they are not required to do long drives"
I´m pretty sure that´s nonsense, because why would you want to give away the chance for a touchdown / field goal (6 / 3 points respectively) only to have your defense make the stop to THEN still get the points? Also having the ball in your position means having control of the game... So they may be more relaxed, but if the offense is struggling because of that, then fuck idk...
@@xxTroller1xx im just saying that when he punts hes getting it so close to the opponents side that upon another turnover it would be more likely to be closer to the endzone because of the punter. Meaning that in those situations the offense would have to put up less yards than other offenses would with a shitter punter, therefor the amount of yards possible in some situations are less than other teams.... like hes so good at punting the offense has easier drives
You have to play more than 4 snaps per game to be considered the best college football player in the country There are backup players who have had a bigger impact than the best punter or kicker
Yeah, he should be in the finalists at least. [Brian Urlacher got no football scholarship to Texas, Oklahoma, or any top colleges, only to New Mexico, then made the top 12 for the Heisman nominations as a senior, as his told-ya-so.]
If it where really by who is the most impactful. He should get it where he stands now… Media sucks, people like flash and it isent good for “football” But this man if he keeps going should win
This is very dumb. Absolutely in no way should this man win the Heisman, or even get a vote. He averages 7 snaps per game, is on a team that is not in championship contention and does not have near the impact of someone like Bryce Young. I understand he is the best punter in college football but simmer down on the Heisman talk, sir
Incorrect. You're trying to change the definition to fit your argument. According to the Heisman Memorial Trophy website the award is voted and given to "the most outstanding player" NOT the "most impactful player" as you state thus negating your entire video. Some will say rhe Heisman is earned by big time players making big time plays in big time games. What did the iowa punter do in Iowas big time game vs Michigan? Nothing note worthy.
OK. Yea you got me.... This kid needs votes for the Heisman.... CERTAINLY enough to merit an invitation to the presentation! Looking over the Heisman watch list now does not excite me.
"A pLaYeR nOt eVeN oN tHe FiElD 30% oF tHE gAmE dOeSnT dEsErVe a tRoPhY" - an angry bot who worships QBs, RBs, and WRs like theyre 100% of the team 😂☠️ *Scores more points in punts than his entire teams touchdowns combined* *Extremely long range, very high accuracy* Look how ready people are to tell one of the best players on a team his position makes him much less of a player therefore never deserves 1st regardless of how well he does. Backwards AF 😂 Good video dude, shed that light on the underappreciated!
Tory reminds me of Michael Dickson, who flipped fields for the Texas Longhorns and generally pinned opposing teams deep in their own territory on a consistent basis. Dickson won the Ray Guy award and now plays on Sundays for the Seahawks. Here's a video of Dickson earning the MVP in the 2017 Texas Bowl... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Skxnj5PhpmI.html
This is a hilarious way to think about how the Heisman should be considered. Obviously every team member contributes and obviously this guy is a good punter... but also obviously he's not helping his team 30 minutes a game like the QB or the middle linebacker. His role position deserves recognition, not Heisman consideration. I think O-lineman should be in the conversation more often. QB can't do much if under pressure constantly. Same with the RBs. Same with the punter and kicker. Seriously though, there is a reason QBs get the attention. How hard is it to manage the team, the ball, the opposing team blitzes and coverages...? The list goes on and on. QBs are carrying WAY more responsibility than the punter. An acceptable number of plays going wrong for the QB (fumble, interception) is maybe 2-3 times a game in college. An acceptable number of plays going wrong for the punter (20 yard punt, fumble, blocked punt) is twice a year. Totally different level of contribution to the teams success. The whole point of the punter is: "Well that didn't work... let's give it to the other team." The whole point of a QB is: "Go win this game with 2 minutes left and no timeouts!"
Special teams has always been undervalued to a point where people just dont talk about it AT ALL! Its always off vs def PERIOD! People always mess with belichick but one of the reasons he wins so much is because he understands there is THREE facets to the game! Yes its probably 40-40-20 conservatively but that 20% or even 15% can start adding up when people neglect it!!
He's Iowa's offense, unsurprising given that Peachtree isn't an FCS quarterback, BF isn't an FCS OC, and KF is fine with a playbook he inherited from Woody Hayes.
Punter U has been crankin out All Americans for years and they’ve never sniffed a Heisman. Y’all remember Punter U right? Iowa got blown out in the 2014 Taxslayer Bowl by Punter U. #GBO
Alot is changing in sports, especially College Football. "Special Teams" players, or when I played we were called "Suicide Squad", are becoming, pardon the pun, quite specialized indeed. So why not a punter winning Heisman ?? It would be a shot in the arm for ALL College sports !!!
Don't worry, he likely won't even win kicking awards this year. The NCAA and the media find a way to screw over the best kickers. Just ask Alex Henery, the best NCAA kicker of all time by accuracy, and he wasn't even on the finalists list for the Lou Groza award that year. It was truly pathetic and mind numbing.
