The British Army Murdered 13 People, No One Was Prosecuted
On January 30th, 1972, the British army shot and killed 13 people in the city of Derry/Londonderry. The soldiers had fired into a crowd of civil rights protestors, and yet somehow, no one was prosecuted. So how did the British government conspire to cover up the events, to protect themselves and their soldiers? What is the true story of Bloody Sunday?

I now live right around the corner from where Bloody Sunday happened. My granddad as a 24 year old at the time freaked out when he heard what happened cause his 18 year old brother had went to the march, so he and his other brothers travelled to Derry to find him. By sheer luck, my granda met his brother at a checkpoint in the city. He said he never hugged his brother tighter than at that moment.

@@TheBlaise91 Although to an outsider the term “United Ireland” seems to suggest the coming together of two separate areas of Ireland, many people (mostly from the unionist community) interpret this as the Republic completely absorbing the North into their country. Which in the Unionist view is the antithesis of everything they stand for. So in recent years the term “New Ireland “ has been used to suggest that if a border poll were to happen, the constitution would be have to be completely rewritten to accommodate people from all walks of life on the island of Ireland. This would be ensuring that in the hypothetical situation that it happened, that unionists wouldn’t be treated the same way catholics were when the original border was drawn in 1921. Could a poll happen in next 10/20 years? I think so. There are three main groups in the North; Unionists, Nationalists, and the middle ground who are fed up with Green and orange politics. In my opinion in order for it to be successful, the politicians need to convince the people in the middle that a “New Ireland” is the better alternative by actually showing them what a “New Ireland” would look like.

The irony, I think, is that Bloody Sunday became such a cause in itself that without it (and the commitment to properly investigate it), there wouldn't have been enough impetus to get the peace talks over the line in 1998. And, as always, there was only one way this could possibly end - by sitting down, talking, with both sides admitting where they went wrong, and committing to never let it happen again.

Bloody Sunday, or the Bogside Massacre, was a massacre on 30 January 1972 when British soldiers shot 26 unarmed civilians during a protest march in the Bogside area of Derry, Northern Ireland. Fourteen people died: thirteen were killed outright, while the death of another man four months later was attributed to his injuries. Many of the victims were shot while fleeing from the soldiers, and some were shot while trying to help the wounded. Other protesters were injured by shrapnel, rubber bullets, or batons, two were run down by British Army vehicles, and some were beaten. All of those shot were Catholics. The march had been organised by the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA) to protest against imprisonment without trial. The soldiers were from the 1st Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, the same battalion implicated in the Ballymurphy massacre several months before.

He was given a 21 gun salute by the IRA when he passed in the 1970’s. My father use to tell me stories of hearing bombs going off as a kid constantly. @@brandonhoffman4712 Central london* the uk is Germanic not Roman, romans did invade and most likely mixed blood lines in certain families but we are not roman, as the Americans are British, French or Spanish. central london was the centre of power for the romans, where as Westminster was the centre of British power, the romans took England, vikings took the islands, Scot’s were lucky to fight them both off due to their geographic location, was too mountainous for the romans, couldn’t tell you why the Vikings didn’t. Today central London is still as crazy as it always was, has its own police force, laws, everything, mostly bankers that live there.

Hi Johnny! Love this episode. As Indian, I would always sympathies with Irish people because we shared the common enemy in the past who destroyed both countries. I would be grateful if you make a video on Jallianwala bagh massacre and Bengal famine. These are the most horrifying crimes ever committed in the history by Brits which many people are not aware of. If it's possible then please make a video on this & use your platform to educate people about this dark history. 🙏

Interesting! But some corrections and important notes: - It wasn’t just ‘at the time’ that the vote was linked to property owning - the rest of the UK did not have this limitation by this stage. In the North, property owners and business owners (most of whom were Protestant and Unionist, and voted as such) could vote MULTIPLE times, based on the number of businesses they owned, while many Catholics could not vote AT ALL. - The barricades of the Bogside in August 1969 weren’t in reaction to the Apprentice Boys march, but the violence directed at the Bogside during the march, and the subsequent RUC brutality. Also, the Apprentice Boys are not ‘a group of young Protestant boys’, they are an international Protestant fraternal brotherhood that holds an annual march in August to commemorate the Siege of Derry against ‘Catholic aggressors’ within their loyalist mythology. Big difference here. - In 2023, the British Government passed a 'Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act', which essentially prevents justice for any murder that occured in relation to the Troubles, including those committed by the British military - something no major political party in the North supports. Nothing has changed. The British government (particularly, the Conservative Party) care nothing for the people and only wish to protect themselves - as colonial administrators often do. - These themes of colonial propaganda, military brutality and injustice are still being played out across the world today. While many in the West happily consume US, European and Israeli propaganda, the genocide the Palestinian people are being subjected goes on. The Bloody Sunday Trust is itself a loud supporter of the Palestinian people, and fierce critic of the Israeli apartheid state. If you're moved by this video, you ought to stand against all colonial injustices.

Don't compare the two, it makes you look like a fool to anyone educated on the subject. I'm an Irish nationalist & very pro Palestinian but Hamas are deplorable. Raping & torturing women is something the IRA has never & would never even consider.

Thank you for once again sharing a fair perspective on important events with a catchy and interesting video. I have always had an eye of admiration towards your work ever since I first saw you on a Vox video years ago. This is why I struggle to understand why you would promote a company that was ruled by the FTC to have "engaged in deceptive data collection by pushing people to turn over sensitive information under the guise of it being confidential." The most important thing about therapy is that it should be confidential and selling user's data to third parties with the promise that they were being helped is despicable. Knowing your work and what you stand for I am puzzled by this choice and wonder whether it was due to your team believing betterhelp to be a safe platform or by negligence towards the issue. Once again, great video.

fair perspective? are you serious? As someone who comes from Ireland (republic) and grew up through this .. this has an hilariously biased lead up to the massacre, clearly written by someone with little understanding, a personal agenda or both
