Ira Flatow and our physics friend Jack demonstrates how rainbows work and why they refract using light.
Hosted by Ira Flatow, Newton's Apple was an American educational television program about science produced and developed by KTCA of Minneapolis-Saint Paul (Now @Twin Cities PBS ) and distributed to PBS stations in the United States that ran from October 15, 1983, to January 3, 1998.

Its pretty good, but check out Phisics girl. She went a little farther and showed how the 42 degrees is happening because its the maximum angle, that the red light can escape the droplet in that direction. Red light that enters the droplet a little closer to its center has more acute angle of reflection, the light that enters farther from the center reaches maximum 42 degrees, and the light farther away gives more acute angle again. So more red light goes out close to 42 degrees. Also she showed how for different colours, this maximum angle is different, for purle its 40 degrees.

Same here! I just watched a bunch of videos, and started to get it, but this one put it all together! Funny how an older video can be so much better! Loved all the models!

@JoseGarcia-rt3fy

The way it works indoors you need water, light and a mirror. The light needs to shine through the water reflect off the mirror and back on to the water as a rainbow except it won't be curved unless the mirror is curved. If your wondering what that curved mirror is outside its called the FIRMAMENT its in the bible.

What they actually missed telling is the existence of Anti solar point about which Rainbow will trace its shape.... else rest of the explanation is fantastic.

@@richardmahn7589 Technically it wasn't a PBS show and was not on the schedule. It's possible your station didn't carry it. The PBS stations who chose to buy it, usually aired it non-primetime on weekends.

i wonder now what would happen if i were ascending, what would the rainbow look like if i were still able to see it? i dont think it would dissappear since the curtain of droplets would start from the clouds...?

It all depends where the raindrops are, and where you are, and the angle of the sun light. You are the focal point.

A rainbow is curved because it’s a reflection off the dome shaped FIRMament that God stretched over the earth like a tent . Like a prism

You're right. This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Light bends in an angular way even WITHIN a raindrop but somehow forms an impossible curve when light only travels in straight lines. Hogwash
@RawDiscovery
@RawDiscovery 5 месяцев назад
@@simmzmcnugga9829light is very confusing. You would not believe how complicated any model of light can get. Just because you don’t understand it doesn’t mean it isn’t the truth. Trust me this is very simple compared to other topics like wave-particle duality
@ashutoshroy2304
@ashutoshroy2304 5 месяцев назад
@@simmzmcnugga9829 the thing is when the light comes to us on a certain angle then only we are able to see the rainbow, only that angle arc is visible to us thats why it appers in this shape
