In this video:
The most abundant metal in the Earth’s crust, aluminum naturally occurs as a compound with other elements, such as aluminum oxide or potassium aluminum sulfate. As such, it was not isolated as a separate element until 1825 when a Danish chemist, Hans Christian Oersted, was able to produce a small amount.

I always assumed the difference was from when it's rolled for packaging, the stretching of the outer layer forced the crystaline microstructure of the metal into alignment, while the compression squished them into disarray. Thanks for the proper explanation!

saintpine -I tested it on a pair of blunt (not completely blunt) scissors, cutting foil around a hundred times. The scissors were still blunt afterwards though. Perhaps they were too blunt to begin with. Also, can help but notice the three commenters above you who are asking a question that was specifically answered in the video.

Bonus 4 The lunar lander had a problem. The lander struts would be too heavy if a car strut technology were used. At the cost of $10,000 per pound engineers had to design a lighter onetime used shock for the lander. They knew a honeycomb structure was light and crush able but still heavy by mission standards. So they went with aluminum foil. It was light and can take extreme hot and cold. The foil was crumpled in a manner that when the lander touched soil it would support the weight and absorb the impact. The aluminum strut and foil cut the weight so well it paid for the cost of engineer design in all landers. even the few taken to space and moon and never used.

My understanding is that Al foil must be rolled as two sheets back to back because there's a limit as to how thin the foil can get using a single sheet. After that point, it recovers its original thickness as it leaves the rollers.

Aluminum only has one "i" in it. The original chemist who discovered it mistakenly called it "alumium" instead of the usual Latin so he subsequently changed it to "aluminum." The "aluminium" came as yet another alternate pronunciation after it had already been named. There are many British-isms which are incorrect, and even more American ones. The British spelling of "foetus" is totally wrong, for example; British just made that one up. It is "fetus" from the Latin "fetus" which means "fetus." Haha. Not enough space here to talk about the stupidity of Americanisms, though, but rest assured, there are plenty.

@fetB
@fetB 8 лет назад
Erm, how is the sharpening effect happening?
@Hamletstwin
@Hamletstwin 8 лет назад
+fetB If you google it there is much debate on whether it works or not. I believe that the aluminum is just removing burs on the edges. That doesn't make them "sharper" but that could make cutting through some materials easier. The problem with that is since you are cutting through that thick of material you'll spread the blades apart which defeats the whole point of scissors. So your best bet is to sharpen them like any other blade using a whetstone. But some scissors you cant take apart so what I've found useful is a handheld sharpener. You wont get all the way to the handle but it'll help make those cheap scissors last alot longer. this one has been working pretty good for me. www.amazon.com/Lansky-3143-PS-MED01-BladeMedic/dp/B0085PPSIQ/ref=lp_2595201011_1_2?srs=2595201011&ie=UTF8&qid=1441123239&sr=8-2
