Why Assistance Work is Key to Building Muscle Mass and Fixing Weak Links
Hey Powerbuilders, it’s Coach Gary! If you’re serious about adding muscle mass and developing overall strength, it’s time to talk about a key part of your training that often gets overlooked-assistance work.
While compound lifts like squats, deadlifts, and bench presses are essential, assistance exercises can be the game-changer that helps you fix weak links and develop a more balanced, stronger physique.
Here’s why assistance work should be a regular part of your routine:
1. Address Weak Links to Prevent Injury
Assistance exercises target specific muscles that might be underdeveloped or lagging behind in your main lifts.
By working on these weak links, you create a stronger foundation, which not only helps you lift heavier but also reduces your risk of injury.
For example, if your hamstrings are weaker than your quads, assistance work like Romanian deadlifts or hamstring curls can balance things out, preventing knee or lower back issues.
2. Build Muscle Mass with Targeted Isolation
While compound lifts are great for hitting multiple muscle groups, they don’t always allow you to isolate specific muscles that need extra work.
Assistance exercises let you target individual muscle groups-like your biceps, triceps, or calves-helping you to increase muscle mass in areas that compound lifts might miss.
Want bigger arms, stronger shoulders, or fuller glutes? Assistance work is where you build that extra muscle.
3. Improve Your Performance on Compound Lifts
Struggling to increase your numbers on squats, deadlifts, or bench presses?
Adding assistance work can boost your performance by addressing the smaller, supporting muscles that are essential for stability and power.
Movements like hip thrusts, face pulls, and dumbbell rows improve the strength and stability of the muscles that support your compound lifts, leading to bigger gains in the long run.
If you’ve hit a plateau in your big lifts, assistance work could be what gets you moving forward again.
4. Balanced Physique and Symmetry
Focusing only on compound lifts can sometimes lead to imbalances or asymmetry in your physique.
Assistance work allows you to fine-tune your body for a more balanced look.
Whether you want to bring up your lagging chest or improve your rear delts, assistance exercises will help you achieve proportionate muscle growth.
A well-rounded physique is not just about lifting heavy; it’s about developing every muscle group equally for the best results.
How to Incorporate Assistance Work into Your Training
1. Identify Your Weak Points
Evaluate your lifts and physique to determine where you need improvement.
This could be weak hamstrings, underdeveloped shoulders, or poor core stability.
2. Choose Targeted Assistance Exercises
Select movements that directly address those weak points. For example:
• Weak hamstrings? Try Romanian deadlifts or glute ham raises.
• Lagging chest? Add incline dumbbell presses or chest flyes.
• Need stronger shoulders? Incorporate lateral raises or face pulls.
3. Program It After Your Main Lifts
Assistance work should complement your main lifts.
Perform these exercises after your heavy compound movements when your energy is still high, but not completely spent.
4. Keep It Consistent
To see results, make assistance work a regular part of your routine. Consistency is key to fixing weak points and adding muscle mass.
