Why Is Bald Brood Appearing In This Hive?

This isn't the first time I've pulled a frame of brood only to find patches of what was capped brood being uncapped. But what causes this? Well, two main reasons can result in bald brood, and one of them may not be the first to cross your find. Bees will chew the capping of capped brood when they detect a virus or a varroa mite problem. The second cause to this is...drum roll, please...the Greater Wax Moth. Yes, the GWM can cause this issue as in tunnels underneath the brood. Check out this great article by Bee Informed:

First year beekeeper here in KY. I had the same problem, hive was great, then just stalled, no honey, hive no organization, some brood was opened. i tried feeding, little response. had wax capping that were scratched, not not totally opened on drones. It just was flat and sucked. keep in mind i have 2 hive, and the second hive (a month behind) surpassed this hive. Eventually tried a mite check, had a 30/300 count. no kidding. brutal. did a single OA drip, and it was mite murder in the botom of the hive. Absolute murder. Hive is more stable now, but not perfect. have to feed, not sure if they'll make it over the winter. But i had many of your same symptoms, even saw a drone with 2 mites on it. thats when i treated.

Oh, wow! Thanks for checking out the video and leaving such a detailed comment. So you did the OA drip? We have yet to try that method. Seems easy enough.

To much space they couldn’t keep it warm enough if I was you I would put them in a nuc box and feed the crap out of them and also do some mite treatments and I would add one or two frames of capped brood.

Heavy varroa infestation.

You can tell that just by looking at a frame?

@@ColesFarmNC Yes. Gunshot brood, partly opened caped brood, different age larvae, population declining, dead larvae sticked to cell wall, crawling bees outside hives (especially drones), low honey, emerging bees dying with their proboscis out and many more signs it's heavy varroa infestation with our beloved diseases.

I’ve heard/read that it can be that the bees are uncapping capped brood they determine have a mites or due to starvation. The bees will start cannibalizing brood to survive.
