The golden age of 3-D platform games. This is the best one from that era. I've just replayed it on Rare Replay and it's as good now as it was twenty years ago.
So glad you finally made this video. Banjo Kazooie is my all time favorite; better than Super Mario in my opinion. I remember it being the first game our family got for the 64, watching my big brother play it and being mesmerized by its atmosphere. The music is hands down the best part and it’s so masterfully crafted and utilized. I can’t believe there haven’t been more (proper) sequels. Hopefully Microsoft does it justice in the future, or sells it back to Nintendo haha.
speaking of grunty industries being a pain to get around I got a story to share about that. My dad was beating the game while I watched I was only six at the time. He unlocked that level but was at work I went on his save file and just wanted to explore, I hit the train button opening the station. When he came back he had no idea how to get into the factory so he googled how found out about the train button saw that I pressed it and accused me of breaking the game. Later that Christmas he got me a strategy guide which he ultimately used to figure out he had to go back fight the second world boss to then use the train to access the level. In the end I think it's funny that my dad bought me a gift for himself to beat a video game.
I must say, this series of videos are the best. Nice work. Maybe the next review could be Hunt Showdown? I think you would like that game after what you said with battlefield 1.
1:22 Just those first few notes Instantly take me back to childhood, it was either this or DOOM.. also i still have a working N64 i've had for 21 years and it still works with both Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie.. hoping to record footage someday for Nustalgea
3D Platformers are some of the best genres because to me, it's more than just polished gameplay, it's the charm and personality that makes it so incentive for you to keep playing. That's what makes games like this, Spyro 2, Crash Bandicoot WAAAARPED, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Donkey Kong 64, Jak 3 and Super Mario Galaxy the best in that genre for me.
I agree with most of this video but with time I learned to love grunty industries, in my first playthrounght it was a shore but theres something about its atmosphere, music and complexity that really got into me and now is one of my favorite levels (if not my favorite) of both games. I really loved BK as much as many other rare games but Tooie was on another level from everything else to me, no doubt the game I enjoyed most in my childhood.
I'm 32 and when this came out I was like ohh gawwd Nintendo. Even as a kid this game looked like it was for kids younger than me. Why would I play a babies game when we already got Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, Conquers Bad Fuckin Fur Day Baby, Golden Eye, WWF No Mercy etc. Watching this video to see why this game was so loved and forgotten. So far the only reason I hear that people like this is because they played it as a kid.
wow what a coincidence act man. I just started to replay this game two days a go and I'm stuck again at the same god damn part as I was 20 years ago fuck
Some of the Xbox social media so called “content creators” have said “banjo kazoo is” isn’t what Xbox needs. They’re so wrong. Thank you for making this. God Xbox could be so much better if they bring back games people want!
Why was TimeSplitters: Future Perfect SO AWESOME?! I see you drop a mention of the game in so many of your videos. 1,2, & 3 were apart of my childhood.
I don’t even think it’s just a general coming of age thing that everyone goes through, I’m almost certain that we’re actually in some dark times, universally
A good question for cod I suppose the golden age was cod later childhood like 9 10 and 11 and the bad games were like teenage years.and now entering adulthood cod is making its comeback
It's not Iconic at all it's Nostalgic to some. Even as a kid this was to kiddish for me. Especially with games like Conker, it's basically making fun of those types of games.
There you are playing banjo kazooie. And BAM you have a extinct bird scratching your back. Edit: thx for 100 likes, now I hope that Actman will kiss me goodnight
"Swim. Swim you goddamn bear!" Love that moment Also love how you spend just as much time joking about the game as you do actually talk about it. Just goes to show how fun and lighthearted it is
Oh You don't know what to do? That's ok I'll tell you. But first, this comment is sponsored by RAID SHADOW LEGENDS. Ok so all you have to do is spend thousands of $. Summon for stuff, get nothing good, then spend even more. Good game right?
I feel the same way. I was born during the GameCube, Xbox, and PlayStation 2 era and was to young to really think about games and now I look back and just feel stupid for never noticing all this cool stuff.
@DerpToni616372 Its free to play. They have to make their money somehow. Its when that shit creeps into the non free to play games that it becomes a problem.
I remember my uncle had this game on N64 when I was like 5 or 6 and he let me borrow it when he finished it. I played it so much, and played the sequel even more. So many nostalgic memories, the skeletons used to scare the piss out of me. Twas definetely the golden era of Rare Games and platformers in general.

Ah my childhood, I can still hear every single song, voice, and sound effect in this game. I believe this game is what gave me my over the top sarcastic personality
1st time watching one of your vids this was such a good video, starting playing banjo on retro arch through steam loving it so far such a perfectly crafted fun game
16:57 The word you're looking for is "Dynamic Music/Soundtrack" It's when the soundtrack seamlessly transitions into different variants of the same tune but with different jingles depending on what you're doing/where you are. This isn't unique to just Banjo, the most similar in style to Banjo would be Jak & Daxter 1 and 2. But there are many forms of Dynamic or Adaptive music. LucasArts 90's games had their own system to make music match what's going on onscreen. Even Red Dead Redemption has it's own form of Dynamic music.
Indeed. It’s a fairly common practice these days, if you extract audio from a bunch of different games you’ll find that the tracks are composed of a number of layers that fade in and out depending on the action onscreen.
Valetta Shepard true but not many games have a different mix depending weither are underwater and a lot of games very poorly executed their dynamic soundtrack take gta v online a lot of them are pretty well made but almost all of them are base around how much action is going on aka enemies attacking you so during long fire fight or long driving you get the same loop repeated over and over again until you want to turn it off entirely lucky when driving you got the radio but it’s also an issue in police chases where it will always turn off the radio any time you get inside a car and it doesn’t help the grind were if you are doing the same job over and over and the action dies almost as quickly as it starts and it’s nothing but the same droning loop over and over again. And while that mostly an issue of simplified design there’s also game with much more complex systems that also suffer from the ten second loops. Nfs carbon(a game I beat like seven times) has a dynamic soundtrack that factors in your car type rival car types, your podium position in the race and how close to the finish you/others are. So beside minor flaws is pretty cool but it suffers to if you are “too good” aka stay in first place for most of the race. And while the soundtrack does change over the course of the race from the last factor but you can only hear the the orchestra so many times before it’s gets repetitive and if you use the same type of car though out the campaign(which the game encourages) and take down each gang one at a time you’ll hear a lot of the same stuff over and over again. So yeah dynamic music is a thing but not in the same way act man describe it where not only each level has its own soundtrack but depending on where you are at in the level the soundtrack remix itself for that area I mean I think destiny 2 had a dynamic soundtrack but it goes from low energy to high energy depending on if you are in a firefight or not but doesn’t change if you are fighting a different faction, is inside a building or on a rooftop it just loads up one song and switch between the low and the high doesn’t change different tunes of the instrument or any of that stuff it’s pre made loops but having a different version play while under water where you can tell it’s similar but the changes make it fit better under water image if gta changes things depending if you are in a car or not or better yet how damge you are or if you are in the air compared to on the ground it all similar sounding but the difference enable it to fit more into what you are doing/where you are it would make cops chases more interesting compared to what system they have now now what I imagine what bajoo uses is different midi modes depending on the areas and all it does is change the order for the different areas which allows for seamless transition unlike modern games which used would often used one file and loop certain parts and have transitions to and from each loop in the same file which doesn’t allow for the remixing that would be possible with a midi controller but allows for more interesting loops since you are limited to predefine set of sounds bites or bpm. Tl;dr modern games use single audio files and loops parts of it bajoo probably used a midi controller with different audio bites depending on the level and both has their ups and downs
noname noname I mean if recall correctly it still used the loop system and beyond each level having their own set of music it doesn’t change when going into a different area aka going outside or going to a deeper level on a foundry. But it does work really well in reacting to your actions/linking to events, such as getting a finisher or triggering enemies spawns. Which definitely helps a lot in terms of combat and transition between combat and exploration. But if you are just walking around after killing everyone trying to find that last secret you’ll notice the lack of dynamic music in just exploring sure it changes with different levels but exploration suffer from this. Now doom is heavily set towards combat while banjoo is heavily set to exploration so where they set the changes is very different. Also doom have the advantage of much more level sound effects so while the music will become very repetitive the environment sounds help break up that especially the announcement which bring nice doses of dark humor. In any case still not the same but it works very well for what it was designed for. tl;dr doom dynamic is base around combat banjoo is base around location
@@RyoLeo Jak II does it for everything. From exploration, to having a weapon out, to driving, to JET-Boarding, Mech suit, turret, to slowly building up percussion and stingers PER enemy in your vicinity up to 5 I believe. The layering is just superb.
I'm glad that Banjo finally got some coverage on this channel! All throughout your vids I hear the soundtracks from Kazooie and DK64 and always find myself wondering if and when these games will be covered. That rocks man🤘🤘
Matanumi Ok, that I actually agree with you. I hate how people for some mysterious reason jump to the conclusion that some thing are mutually exclusive. What gives?
2:33 Act Man, I humbly ask you to do the following videos in the future: Why was POP: Sands of Time SO AWESOME? Why was POP: Warrior Within SO AWESOME? (yes, I meant to type awesome, cause Warrior Within rocks, fight me) Why was POP: The Two Thrones SO AWESOME? Why was POP 2008 SO BAD? Why was POP: Forgotten Sands SO BAD?
I just completed this after struggling to complete it as a kid when it was release. I was blown away by how funny and enjoyable it was. Easily in my top 10 ever games, maybe even top 5.
I replayed this less than a year ago. It was just as great as I remembered. It was actually pretty unreal how good the game is. It is one of those games I feel like would be easy to just update the graphics and port it, and it would still be considered a good game by today's standards. (I also still have several of the scores saved on my playlist, that music is timeless)
