The Act Man: In my personal opinion I thought halo 4's story was pretty good. For me, halo 5 destroyed what they set up in 4. I'm honestly disappointed in the story and art style shift so far in halo 5. I liked halo 4 because I finally got to see the chief awake from a long slumber and getting back into the world of being a badass like we all have waited for in the past, around the days of halo reach. In my opinion halo 4 was pretty good to me. keep up the good work tho Act Man.

Eric Hernandez I agree. Apparently Cortana modified it while Chief was asleep but 1: How’d she know what Spartan IV armor was like? 2: I’m pretty sure even a sentient AI in the Halo universe could not just change the armor like that magically. 3: John never comments on the new shit he can do. It’s literally a plot hole right out of the gate.

I popped in this game after finishing Reach again for the first time like 2 years ago. After beating Reach on Heroic, I tried the first level of Halo 4 on normal, used the same playstyle as I did on Reach, and ran out of ammo so quickly and so frequently that I uninstalled 4. Never touched it again since.

In all honesty I still found it enjoyable the new games haven't been as good as the original but when you separate them from that and look at them as an individual entity they're decent games with great graphics my favorite mission was riding the driving fortresses into battle and having to defend them

I'd say the biggest problem with Halo 4 is that Del Rio didn't give you a Magnum with barely any ammo and say "I don't keep it loaded son, you'll have to find ammo as you go!"

There are very few instances where naval personnel especially high ranking commanders would need to be armed. Their role is not to engage the enemy personally but to lead the attack utilizing their assets, ie the ships weaponry or deploying the marines for ground operations. The bridge is also located far from most entry points and is well defended by UNSC Marine Corps Fire teams.

I'd still keep the bridge crew armed as a last resort. Just in case something gets past the Marine defenses and they need to hold off the covies while somebody is purging the data.

20:05 Halo 1 isn't the first time Chief got Cortana. Just the first time he put her in his suit. He and cortana already knew each other because Cortana says "So you did miss me" The Halo 4 cutscene is supposed to be the first time Chief ever met Cortana

But Halo isn't necessarily about just fighting Aliens. At it's heart it's kind of about humanity rising to fill the shoes of the Forerunners.

@@sorrenblitz805 When Halo 4 came around, sure. But in every Halo game before 4, it's mostly about fighting aliens. The Forerunner tech is central to the plot and has a level of mystery to it, but it's ultimately just the set piece for the conflict... where you exclusively fight aliens. I mean, the only characterization we got from the Forerunners before Halo 3 (and even then only in terminals), is that Guilty Spark is an egotistical prick.

@Gol Acheron I think Halo isn't really a doom clone. It was based heavily on Bungie's marathon series, which did have some inspiration from Doom but it's not a clone copy.

I just finished Halo 4 there and I have to say I actually enjoyed it. It was a lot more linear but I did still enjoy the combat and storyline, but Halo CE will always be my all time favourite.

I tried so hard to enjoy it and there were some parts that were pretty good, but a lot of the game mechanics ruined my fun just when things were getting good (whenever I found the perfect weapon combo and got into "the zone", I'd run out of ammo and the only thing around would be a Plasma Pistol or Boltshot, which are kinda only good at close range with certain enemies). Glad you were able to enjoy it though.

Hi. Newcomer to PC gaming and Halo franchise here. Are the weapons and ammo capacity as bad as Act Man makes them out to be? I recently bought Halo: Master chief collection for the first time and I wanna know what to expect from this game.

@@orboakin8074 On normal, I ran out of ammo in almost every fight, which has never happened to me in any halo game on normal. It was a problem for me because I like picking my weapons based on the scenario, but if your more lenient and can make do with whatever weapons are lying around you might not have as much of a problem as I did. But if you ask me, I think its best to play Halo 4 on easy, it should make my ammo situation and my issue with the Promethean Knights less severe. As for how the weapons are in this game, some of them are cool but the ammo capacity does make them less useful. I found most of them ended up being useless compared to the good ol assault rifle or the promethean weapons

@Alex Luca That's awesome man. I agree some of the game's moments were pretty awesome and reminded me of some of my favorite moments from Halo 2. My biggest issues were with the game's mechanics and combat, but I like a few elements of the story, the music (sure not the same beauty as Marty's old soundtracks but the more techno feel piqued my interest), and those badass moments that kept me entertained (even if the mechanics ultimately ruined those moments for me). I admire what this game tried to do and I'm at least glad it kept Halo alive

As time goes on companies will always become more corporate and care more about money then making the best game they can. This means the developers either leave or are forced to make bad games with shorter deadlines. Ubisoft is the biggest example. Even the main developers who made cod4 left. This is why only new and indie companies are actually liked. It's so dumb

Not gonna lie, the last mission for me had some really solid musical scores. The music when you're in the Broadsword and then the following segment where you are blasting through waves of Prometheans to get to the Didact were made even more amazing due to the musical pieces. It actually made me a little emotional during my Solo Legendary run it was soo good. But I agree that a lot of the rest of the musical set pieces were pretty lack luster.

Theory: Cortana's avatar never changed in the first four games. We experience the games through Chief's eyes, and I believe he just got more and more thirsty as the years went on, hence Cortana looking more and more like a drink.

Captain Rio should have been more like major Silva from the novel Halo: The Flood. He hated the spartan program in general, yet put chief to work anyway, because he was the best soldier available. Rio could have been respectful of cheif, but after chief consistently goes slightly off mission, which he and Cortina do sometimes, he takes chief off the front of every mission.

I think it’s important that when franchises change hands, they respect the timeline and change the main character. They might not mean to but they always seems to disrespect the previous protagonist and it’s a great opportunity to explore new stories.

Looking back, I now realize that Halo 4 wasn’t supposed to be a ‘forced love story’ but it can be easy to see where people get that idea. If you think about it, the Chief in 4 is accurate to how he should be. He is a child soldier, just like the first cutscene said, he was broken at his core. He was like an abused dog, and Cortana was his therapy. It wasn’t romantic love, it was that to Chief, Cortana was what made him whole. The one that could heal the damage done by the Spartan-II program. To show Chief that he wasn’t just a machine. Looking at the story like this..it hits a lot harder, and has more impact to the player. I know this video is old, but I hope you see this comment and can understand what I’m saying. I’ve been watching your videos for a couple years, and I’ve been able to see things more clearly, and appreciate what makes video games good. Keep up the awesome work, Man of Acting. Now let’s wake when we’re needed, wake up a Sith lord, and lament over Cortana straight into this.

Julio Benavides That’s the book.Bungie always put the games first and a video game is the only medium of art where you can immerse the player as the character that’s why Bungie intentionally left so much to mystery and watch interviews-Chief is a”husk” he is not meant to be this deep emotional character in the games! Leave it in the books..do not merge the two so tightly.Joe Staten wrote books and for the games..he is the brains behind campaign dude. He knows better than you or I. Halo tells its story through the setting,the interactions with the world through gameplay and the other characters more than Chief.Do you understand? That’s why they made Halo:Reach-they book lore second and I know some fans got mad,but that’s how it was and it does make the most sense because first and foremost it is a video game...original is so fluid and feels like a cohesive piece because of its limitations and how close gameplay,story and setting are all tied together. Chief is like Link or any other mostly silent protagonist,it makes you apart of the world to make your own story. My sister and I have backstories in CE to our two Spartans,they weren’t Master Chief ,but two Spartans who are the bumbling idiots and it was fun,we told our own stories and wouldn’t have happened otherwise.

@@KombatKastle it doesnt matter what bungie thinks about the expanded universe they werent the only ones who created halo. It is the effort of a lot of authors and writers that made halo what it is today. Eric Nylund created a lot of essential things that shaped halo for example insurrecion, odst, blue team, reach, mac guns, orbital defense platforms, admiral cole, harvest and much more. It is ignorant to say that halo is just the work of bungie. Bungie with their lack luster care of the halo canon basically created on of the worst reckonnings in videogame history in which they completely changed the battle of reach that is key in the halo timeline. I think that videogames are very immersive. But saying that it is the only media that is immersive is something ignorant. I bet that you never read a book or watched a movie cause it looks like that.

Halo 4 was the first halo I played and I loved it, and then I played the rest in order. Now I definitely like the older ones but I have a soft spot for halo 4 and can’t really explain why, maybe it’s just nostalgia. Side note as a 10 year old the mission where you talk to the librarian went completely over my head and I have no doubt in my mind that I zoned the hell out.

I think the reason that the chief survived the nuke at the end was because during the fight with the didact, Cortana mentions how the shield around him would easily protect him from the nuke, thus why it needed to be disabled. At the end, she has full control over the didact's ship and protects chief by forming a shield around him using the last of the ship's energy. At least that's how I interpreted it.

I did just beat halo 4 for the first time. I will admit, while the didact story was just weird and confusing to me, I actually did take alot of interest in chief and Cortana's story. I thought it felt weird chief talked so much considering he always was sort of silent. But In my opinion the ending between these two was sweet. I actually full on cried when she said goodbye. It felt like a close friend that we've known for a long time was leaving. Like act man mentioned, in previous entries, cheif having limited dialogue and not having much of a personality, which allowed us to feel like we were cheif. And it felt like Cortana was speaking directly to us, which I think helps us connect with Cortana, making us feel like Cortana really is there with us on this adventure. And I think that makes the goodbye here so much more emotional for me. While halo 4 is different and definitely doesn't top previous entries in the series, the moment with Cortana and cheif is one of my favorites.

343i contradicted the lore (including books released after Halo 4) with their nanobots explanation. Master Chief is wearing Mark VI armor in Halo 3 & 4, only the experimental Mark VII armor had nanobots. It's a lazy excuse that is just as inconsistent as the art style change. Also, 343i is the best name they could have chosen. Just like Guilty Spark, we thought we could trust them and they betrayed us. Was that intentional?

Something I haven't seen anyone touch on is the memorability of the levels. When you show footage from 1 through Reach, I can generally recognize the levels, and remember where you are and what comes next. They're etched into my mind out of enjoyment. I do not remember a single level of 4.

18:30 Actually, it’s only one, the way I play the mission, which is to go past the two objectives and into the building that houses the final rally point. Going up the lift there completely skips having to even do them. It’s my preferred method of getting through the mission, after going through the previous one having not fired a single shot.

Imagine the first meeting with the Didact, he stabs Chief, deeply wounding him, and throws him off a chasm. At this point, time is passing as the Chief fades in and out of consciousness, and we as players see the nanobots 343 talked about stitch his wound and repair some of his armor. This would solve both the armor plot-hole, at least for the Chief himself, and make the Didact a bigger threat. Doing this, on the second encounter, the Didact could have said something like "This time, I'll make sure you're dead."

Didact's problem isn't that he's not threatening enough. It's: 1: You don't even understand who he is unless you read some of the books, get all of the terminals, and manage to pay attention to that entire giant exposition dump. So to most of us he's just typical mustache twirling bad guy who has the force for some reason. 2. There's literally no reason why he doesn't just kill chief multiple times over the course of the game other than "because then the rest of the game wouldn't happen." He shows that he easily can multiple times, he just doesn't do it. 3. He dies at the end, so even if you do all of your homework it doesn't even matter because he won't come up again.

I feel like the real reason for the armor change was that they didn't want to go through the trouble of making two different armor sets for Chief and the Spartan IVs. So if they changed the armor partway through the game, they would've had to remake the Mark Vi anyway. Either way, the whole nanobot story just sounds like something they whipped out their ass to explain an obvious continuity error.

After recent gameplay of Halo 4, you don’t always have to shoot from range to kill them. Some other weapons, even the suppressor (ONLY if you’re super close to the Knights and manage to miraculously kill them before they one-hit you), excluding the boltshot, are actually really helpful against the Knights. Also, when they teleport, look at the blue orb sucking it towards it. It tells you the direction to where it will teleport to. If the orb is to the right of the Knight, it will teleport to the right, etc. As for that ridiculous charge-teleportation tactic they use after you take out their shields, if you time it right, you can dodge that attack and use your auto-weapon to finish it off before it teleports back to its previous position. However, those are possibly the only tactics you can use and I do agree that it does ruin the gameplay when facing against the Prometheans in the campaign. But at least they’re certainly much easier to tolerate than the ones on Spartan Ops, especially on Legendary. The Knights teleport away from you every single time they are hit! Kylo Ren: COWARDS!!!!!

That was such a big reveal and made the story seem so poetic. It just saddens me that they dropped it and made them the enemy

It doesn't mean Chief had cortana in his suit before. This is pretty much proven when cortana says his architecture is similar to the Pillar of Autumn. So CE could be the first time Chief had cortana in his suit, but not the first time he worked with her. This is even more plausible when the first level of halo 2 has cortana on the same station as you, but isn't inside the suit until the end cutscene.

Chief got Cortana along with his new mkV in Fall, then they immediately gone through a live exercise held by a dickhead competitor of Dr.Halsey and came out on the top. Cortana then hacked the dude's bank account and mess him hard out of revenge since he broke the rule and called live airstrike on Chief and herself, alomst killed them.

Great video! The Act Man one of three content creators I follow, and this video is a good example of why. To contribute my two cents, the biggest problem I had with Halo 4 is in the cut scene with The Librarian. She basically states that the Master Chief's existence and everything he's done was predestined to happen, making the effort the player has put into previous games feel worthless in terms of the story. Also, replayablity is killed with the twist halfway through the game that you've been unknowingly helping the villain.

So I know this video is old but I finished playing Halo 4 recently for the first time and I will share my experience with it here. I really like how the game looks graphically and I was totally ok with the story. What I didn't like are prothean weapons and prothean enemies in general. The weapons are so bad compared to pretty much anything else the game has to offer and the Didact if that's his name isn't and interesting villain. I won't say anything about multiplayer since I didn't play it because I prefer single player. Also bonus points for Cortana getting thiccer and thiccer every game

I just finished this game (on normal, like I've done with every game so far) and I have to say, it was worth playing. It was a good enough story and when the statement at the end popped up from 343i, I said aloud "you did fine, for your first try."

I didn't really analyze the game while I was playing - very new to Halo in general - but the stuff you're talking about in gameplay prioritization and playstyle is something I just naturally gravitated to. I was always annoyed whenever I didn't have long-range weapons like the LightRifle and I pretty much avoided every shotgun weapon in the game. I did a lot better. I did use some rapid fire weapons that also worked fairly well at longer-ranges. I generally felt like the only difference between the Covenant and the Prometheans was that the bigger enemies were more spongey. I agree with the lack ammo too.

Hamish She mistreated Lasky and acts cocky (don't know what reason she has to be cocky), she is just an unlikable character, I may feel a little bad for 343 because they seem to like her. I think she needs to be humbled, by a lot!

She's also there to be 'badass female character' who fails on every level because being a dick to the main character is not badass, it's just pathetic. Having a character who shows the fact they are a skilled, tough and smart combatant is a thousand times more effective in creating a badass than someone who just talks shit, and this is a mistake many many writers make, it's more pronounced with female characters, but it can apply to men. Long story short, make an interesting character, who happens to be a women and is also actually officer and Spartan material.

I loved this story more than any other story from the series. I am a og halo fan, playing all the games buying xboxs so I can make sure to play the next iteration. And I was tired of "halo this, halo that, halo zeta, halo beta". I was very happy with the characterization of chief and Cortana and their relationship, after how many years and how many near apocalypse events?

Honestly, Halo 4 on legendary isn't nearly as bad as the first three. The campaign is far too easy if you're any good at shooters.

When Palmer comments on Chief's height it was just meant as a friendly jab. Just as his legend grew i'm sure people would exaggerate his feats or his description. But you also notice that when Chief first meets Palmer he is only barely taller than her but in the final cutscene he just towers over her as he walks past her in the armor bay. That's because he's lived up to the legends and as such, everyone around him sees him as that towering, hulking, mythical being. I do think the story does add a lot of character to Master Chief, and it's much needed. The final line he says fucking destroyed my feels. Seeing just a part of his face shows you how war torn and tired he is, but still has the killer look in his eyes. All in all, i think the story was a great look into Chief. Sure the transition could be better but at least it isn't like Halo 5 where it isn't just poopy doo doo.

I think most people felt the same as me, that with the trailer palmer was just some new spartan showing off what big of a deal the Chief is. And she was just going to be a sign of new Spartans, but not nessecarily her own character.

I think the story works kinda well when we found out what they were trying to make. The story, from what I heard, is supposed to go along with one of the developers dealing with a family member’s medical issue (don’t remember what is was). And a huge point of the story telling was that not everything will be easy and you won’t always be eased into things, sometimes shit happens and you have to try your best. A similar thing happened with the halo 5 story that I noticed. Don’t like that they had to tell us what the intent was instead of making at least that understandable but I like the story in the end

You are so right. I just beat it for the second time (first time was its 360 release). The knights are absolutely bullet sponges and when the game doesn't give you the proper tools or even ammo it feels like a glaring mistake in game design.

I just realized something, master chief had that scar on his armor by his right “pec” muscle, but then if the developers said his armor was upgraded by nano bots or whatever, why does he still have that scar in Halo 4? Wouldn’t they have upgraded the scar to match the armor?

So there might be some gaps in my knowledge and I'm going off the Halo wiki) Cortana met Chief prior to the events of Halo: Reach. Reach is in 2552, shortly before the events of Halo: CE. Cortana was created almost 3 years prior to the Fall of Reach, in November 2549. Prior to the Fall of Reach (sometime between 2550 and 2552 I'm assuming), Cortana was introduced to Chief, and that's when she chose him, as revealed in Halo 3 when she said she could choose any SPARTAN she wanted. Then apparently during the events of Reach, Chief and Cortana were separated (Chief was already successful in reaching the Pillar of Autumn) and Cortana stayed with Halsey at her lab beneath Sword Base, before eventually needing Noble Team to retrieve both her and her A.I. after Cortana decrypted some Forerunner data

Halo 4 was my first halo game when I bought it in the Xbox bundle. I have a lot of fun memories with it, and I'm biased in the fact its my favorite in the series. However, I agree with pretty much everything in this video. I would have loved to play the Act Man's proposed Halo 4 campaign changes, because I think it would have added a lot of atmosphere. Halo 5 would’ve been a different game if Microsoft didn’t get involved, the marketing was for a completely different game than what we got because Microsoft wanted them to change it, and 343 rushed whatever the hell we got.

@@gfyGoogle not really. Bungie envisioned 3 as the end of the Master Chief story. 343 basically had to go through the books to try to write a new plot for their games. If you couple that with 343 already working at a handicap cause they're a new company handling a beloved established franchise and it's kind of like Bungie unintentionally set 343 for failure while Microsoft decided to intentionally do it with backhanded unfriendly business BS.

19:53 -correction: The first time John is introduced to Cortana is not on the Pillar of Autumn. I'll tell you when in a minute. But come on Act Man, you're better than this. The way the introduction is established, it is clearly indicated this is not their first meeting, nor logically could it be. In the first cinematic, Cortana's dialogue to Keyes exposits that the ship is currently fleeing a location known as Reach, and that they have been pursued by their enemies. Upon reaching the bridge, Cortana interacts with John, and I quote "Did you sleep well?" "No thanks to your driving, yes." (with a smile)"so you did >>miss

Even still, to play devil's advocate, the scene in the Halo 4 prologue was likely Cortana being presented to John for the Mark V test. 343 opting to lazily re-use the Halo 4 campaign armor model for everything ruins the scene though, unfortunately. Still love the vid man! Keep up the great work

its ok. i know u said u don't read the books and to be honest, the game halo reach kind've made everyone who did scratch their heads and wonder if bungie retconned their own established canon for that event since at the time, we were not only told that cortana had been with chief for AWHILE, but he and the pillar of Autumn were in SPACE above the planet during the fight for Reach. Stuff external to both the book and the game were used to explain the new addition to the timeline ( i think it was halsey's journal that u only get if u bought the special edition of reach)

I will fight you on the topic of music. Even on the first playthrough I felt how the music played well into enhancing the emotions coming from the locations and for me it was the best thing about the game. Maybe not in all the places, but many connected well with what was going on - the sadness of death & destruction along with the mystery of a new place at the Requiem crash site, the wonder and beauty of seeing the floating pillars for the first time, the chilling and echoing vocals while exploring the technological architecture, or the epic score while piloting a ship towards the core of Didact's ship. Plus who could forget the touching sadness of Green and Blue track as the Chief and Cortana say goodbye? With all respect to Marty, I think Neil Davidge took the mantle pretty well, he just came up with something different but powerful nonetheless.

I agree with you on a lot of points. The enemies and weapons you use to defeat them. I remember using a lot more ranged weapons when I played through it. Laskey was one of if not the only NPC I really liked other than Cortana. I've been playing through a modded version of Halo CE and I find myself utilizing more strategic fighting positions and figuring out which weapon is best for the job. I would have preferred if they left that cool ghost run for later but I did really enjoy one of the last couple levels where you fly through the ship. Whenever I talk about Halo 4 I always refer to that as the Death Star Trench run since it made me feel like I was Luke piloting his X-Wing to take down the Death Star. Most of the music I can't really remember except one song that just kept ampping up on one of the last few levels and it made me feel really BA. Overall I did enjoy Halo 4; however, compared to the original trilogy, I prefer Halo 1-3 over this one.

19:53 Actually, that is chief. Chief met Cortana before the events of Halo. In the old canon, he was given Cortana to infiltrate a covenant ship, then infiltrate high charity, kidnap a prophet, and force a peace treaty that way. However, reach was attacked and the mission was put on hold. On his way back, he lost his teammate James (due to jet-pack explosion) and linda due to plasma bursts. This is still canon with some exceptions. Firstly, the so given to 117 was a fragment, one half went to chief, while the other stayed with Halsey. In halo CEA, there is a Cryotube with Linda-(insert spartan number) on the control panel, meaning that the mission still happened, got interrupted, and Linda was critically wounded. This also means that he had Cortana to help infiltrate the ship. It also lines up because Cortana CHOSE chief, it wasn’t just right place right time where Cortana was on the same ship as chief that was being attacked

In the MCC, there is an achievement for beating all Spartan Ops missions on Legendary solo in addition to just beating them all on other difficulties, there are 10 chapters, each with 5 missions totaling 50 missions. Ive made it half way through solo Legendary so far, god help me, especially if i dont get achievements for beating SP on the easier difficulties in addition like in normal campaign missions. If this happens, ill need to replay the whole of spartan ops 3 more times. Thats 200 missions. Thats also assuming i do it all solo.

I played halo 4’s campaign alone, as opposed to with my stepdad, like I did for 1-3. Not having someone to discuss it with, watching this video all these years later is just so reaffirming. I didn’t know what to think of it at the time, didn’t have someone to bounce opinions off of. But, I can thank halo 4’s campaign for saving me from having to play halo 5. It was such a departure from the overall feel of halo and I couldn’t put my finger on it but you nailed it. I guess they might have been trying to mirror combat evolved in a way, dropping you on an alien world… but that’s really where the similarities end

I had a thought for how the chief could get his new armor. The game could start with his old stuff, and as it progresses it becomes damaged and destroyed, so when he gets to the infinity they give him the new suit. Sorta like how you said about the game starting normal then cortana acts up

And the commander of these Spartan 4’s (commander Palmer) was such an ass bro she was the complete opposite of a Spartan leader like carter. Idk they were just sorta garbage lol

I can understand the Spartan 4s being more human than the others, since they are adult volunteers compared to previous generations being taken as children and indoctrinated. In fact, some Spartan 4s have even gone rogue or turned against the UNSC in the books because of their lack of conditioning.

So for anyone reading the comments later in the video, it is stated that the librarian is a ghost or AI. So just to add on to that she was a living person and wife to the didact but the reason she can talk to chief in death is because all forerunner experiences and knowledge and minds are connected in a way through a type of technology they posses using a main AI as well allowing all those things to be stored. There’s a video explaining the origin and full history of the flood which I recommend which explains all of this.
