Dr. Lori Handy talks about dengue virus and its symptoms, including fever, vomiting, fatigue and muscle aches. Many people will have a mild illness, but others might experience more severe dengue.
She talks about the dengue vaccine and why it’s only recommended for certain groups of children. The dengue vaccine is recommended for 9- to 16-year-olds who live in an area where dengue infections are common and who were previously diagnosed with dengue by blood test. Dr. Handy talks about why this last part - having a medical confirmation of a previous dengue infection - is so important, describing what is called antibody-dependent enhancement, or ADE.
