Harry Maguire should be honest with himself and just give up the captaincy, and he doesn't deserve the hate. However, the criticism has been fair as he's a liability.
I think the main issue with him is his “arrogance”. He is playing really badly, yet he still believes that he isn’t doing anything wrong, in fact sometimes he even goes to talk like he is one of the best in the world. I, for one, would appreciate a player who knows he isn’t in his best form and tries to do better and even acknowledges it, but Maguire just goes on like nothing is wrong.

IMO he wouldn't have been this much hated even with the price tag and the terrible form if he wasn't the freaking Captain. There's a level of expectation and standart that comes with being the captain of a historic institution like United and a dull mess like being the captain just perfectly symbolizes United's downfall
Well here's the thing, in 2019/2020, people were calling for him to be made captain. He was arguably United's best defender for that season and 2020/2021 by some distance too. The problem is that this season, United wanted to start playing a high line, which Maguire is just not fit to play in. He then started leaking errors at a very alarming rate. However because he is the captain and cost 80 million, it is almost impossible to drop him unless he is injured. So it's natural for the fans to eventually turn on him. It doesn't help either when he makes mistakes, he never owes up to it, doesn't conduct himself like a captain (would not do interviews if he drops a stinker), and just remained arrogant. Just look at his last interview where he said that he only had a few bad matches, and if was that bad, the two managers wouldn't have picked him. He knows he is currently untouchable. He has himself to blame as well

No one knows that better than David, I mean look at those magnificent saves and lord knows he couldn't have done that without my genuine contribution. I have been watching a lot of Manchester United matches. How should I say this ?...... Maguire doesn't show any effort or willingness to play. I am not doubting his capability but his performance has been so poor and so inconsistent that nobody likes him now. Plus the captain's armband is another major problem. He doesn't have leadership or the willingness to fight for the team. I think the entire team suffers because of his mistakes and the internal tension going on because of him is another reason for Manchester United's poor performance. They have a world-class team but they suffer due to Maguire's inconsistency. I hope he tries to play better and redeem his price tag because he is leading to his own eventual doom.

While the price tag is a factor, for many fans the issue started when he was given the Captain Armband, Most United fans think that honour needs to be earned, not given to him after half a season. However the biggest issue happened this season, his performances were costing the team points, playing defenders onside, focusing too much on the ball and not the players around him, throwing his own teammates to the floor, headbutting Ronaldo, Kicking Pogba, and not taking responsibility for his actions. Most fans have grown up watching Captains like Bryan Robson, Cantona, Keane, Ferdinand, that took charge of the team, elevate them on the pitch, and now we see Maguire and he seems to run away from responsibility, that last factor is important, just look at players like Fred and Mctoniney, Neither have been exactly stellar in midfield but they accept that fact, when interviewed they don't make excuses, and while for some fans that's not enough, other fans appreciate that honesty.
That's entirely the managers fault. The fact man united fans single out one player for terrible management decisions, led by one of the worst owners/board in the country. Highlights what's the cause of all the issues at United. Its way beyond on the pitch theatre
He has no positional sense, no recovery pace and a general lack of what to do and when to do it. He cannot play in a high line as he gets turned all the time. He will look good in a team that sits deep and plays counter attack football where he can hoof the ball of his line and win every air ball with that massive cranium. Unfortunately most modern successful teams don't play like that.

I don't know why everyone doesn't realize that they're clearly letting maguire play just so everyone can blame and hate him as a scapegoat instead of blaming how badly the united management team is. i mean if the management team had at least one brain cell in their head, they wouldn't let Maguire play in the starting squad. One of the problems with Maguire is that on the pitch he's basically a bag of nerves, like he's stressed out. If you look at Maguire's face (This might be his normal face) he looks like he's quite stressed.

making mistakes doesn't make him a bad captain, we never know how these things work behind the scenes, maybe he made some mistakes and his team mistreats him and that is why he performs so greatly for england national team and not man utd, i am assuming because they paid him so much they put so many expectations on him and then destroyed his confidence when he didn't meet those expectations on his first season, making him lose confidence and lose motivation to try his best !
Even more reason for him to give up captaincy. I think giving it up would at least alleviate a bit of the pressure on him and he can focus more on defending.

In Premier League the teams pay enormous sums of money for mid players and then the fans hate him the double i they disappoint the expetations. Paying so much a mid player stress him a lot. The fans should get angry with the team rather than the player
In England he had John Stones who is very good at positioning and in form so Maguire had alot of support from him and ofc Declan rice/phillips. And lack of pace was solved by walker/trippier.

I can't understand why the captaincy belongs to HM and only he can decide to 'give it up'. Captains are 'appointed' by a manager based on leadership qualities amongst all players on and off the pitch. The captain commands respect. He earns respect. He leads the team. He has to be one if not the best player in the team. Right now, HM is none of these. The armband doesn't belong to him. Why can't the manager see this.
i watch every man u game, and i remember noticing at the very beginning of the season that be was making small mistakes, not costly, but weird. it got a little worse but really started against Leicester, when ole played him a day after coming back from injury, with no training. never been the same since, just a downward spiral

Hey I come as a true man utd fan...you know initially last season he was pretty solid and we maintained a good result at the back, he also maintained a great number of appearance of not missing out from matches but at the final stages of the season (including even the Europa League final) he got injured and we the 'Man utd' were really nervous about it and we could see how it affected us in those few matches...thus marks the downfall of Harry Maguire..and with the arrival of Cristiano it brought about much attention towards man utd and so it didn't help much in the case of Harry... Only true man utd fans will know this so I just wanted to share how this has all developed..and as a football fan I truly wish Maguire gains his early forms back because nobody deserves such troll...
The management and himself need to be honest. If you mess up in the front line it won't cost you the match, if your center defense or goalie start blundering it costs you matches. Fact of football.

Midfield gets found out, instead of staying put, Maguire attempts to cover for mistakes of the other positions which means he makes a mistake of his own. Is he being told to cover mistakes? I guess he needs a different coach. He showed, that he can be a world class defender. The best example for a defnder who became world class is Antonio Rüdiger. And he became it through a different Trainer called Tuchel. Maybe Maguire needs just a Tuchel?
He isn't a true fullback in the sense that he has the speed and endurance to keep up with the best forwards in the EPL. Man United should use him in a defensive midfield position like Madrid does with Casemiro. That is his natural position IMHO.
I think the major problem is his attitude on the pitch. If u look closely, almost every goal united concede maguire looks at his teammates as if he’s blaming them for the goal. And to think that he’s the captain, if i were the manager i would’ve stripped him of his captaincy months ago.
Watched half of this video, and two things struck me, If he is not the fastest why buy him, (surly a defender needs to be quick), If the expectation was a "Golden Partnership" as in the past, where is the other golden boy?. Maguire was the first big buy under Ole and the club obviously supported the choice, but in retrospect it looks like the old United way of spending big bucks for little bang.
Mistakes have been piling up as said in the video, that was actually an understatement. The worst thing is he blames others for his own mistakes. I don't see him improve and develop but he stays the same sad story. A captain reflects the team, and looking at United they're unstable. They have the quality and potential to be one of the best. But fail to get the best out of themselves. He deserves the hate in my eyes, he will definitely get a different role once ten Hag becomes the new Manager and most likely be sold. We shall see.

As a man United fan, I do not hate him at all. I hate the club for how they don't nurture players and back them. Rather than just expect individual players to save the club. Maguire is going through a rough patch and I believe will be a solid CB especially if we sell him to another club.
Here is how I see it. I don't hate the man. He has reached a level in the game I never reached. He has fight and determination. I can't take that from him and props to him for that. Many professionals do not have these qualities. Harry is just missing game smarts. He is too slow to read the game and prepare to react appropriately. Because he can't do it for himself, he can't guide his outside defenders and organize the fight in the box. When you can't read the attack or start the counter attack, and prepare, you become a "reactionary" player. You make last second decisions and often it is the wrong one. In any world class competition, you can't play this way and succeed. The level of speed on the attack is way too fast. Best to Harry. He needs to play elsewhere at this point.
