As you seem to have noticed, in the “Humpty Dumpty” nursery rhyme, nowhere does it say that Humpty is an egg, yet he is often presented as such in pictures and stories. The version of the rhyme that most children learn today goes like this:

Too funny! My daughter had to make a comic strip of the rhyme for school. She was trying to figure out how she was going to split up the panels when I told her she didn’t have to draw an egg and could use her imagination. “What do you mean? He’s an egg!,” my wife exclaimed. “Where does it say that?,” I answered....It was a long, long night but I think our marriage will survive.

So, a cannon called Humpty Dumpty fell off a wall and a bunch of people coudn't return it to its original location. And later there's a rhyme about Humpty Dumpty falling from a wall and 160 men being unable to return it to its original location. But then even _later_ the rhyme is changed so that "all the king's horses and all the kings men couldn't put Humpty together again." And since the newer rhyme doesn't explicitly state what was broken, it _must_ be a riddle and the answer _must_ be an egg. Because eggs are the only things that break? And because people are always finding eggs sitting on tops of walls? And King's horses and men are excellent at reassembling everything _except_ eggs? Today I found out "Today I Found Out" makes shit up when they can't figure out the real answer.

Yeah. Just say you don’t know. This conclusion of a riddle made no sense next to the perfectly good canon story. Especially given the original wording. And the fact so many people were trying to fix the problem. Why would so many people even care about a broken egg. The riddle would not have needed that many to attempt to fix it.
@greenhowie
@greenhowie 5 лет назад
Yeah... the story about the Colchester cannon was taught by people who couldn't read to their children in times when illiteracy was common, hence why it wasn't written down for over a century. In those days, reading and writing was still something that only the aristocracy or clergy were allowed/encouraged to do, so what would seem to be a simple nursery rhyme wouldn't have been "important" enough to write down. Bonus Fact : many Aboriginal tribes in various parts of the world (most famously in Australia) have a spoken-word history that dates back thousands of years and geologists have only recently discovered that (with allowances for symbolism), they are shockingly accurate in describing ancient landslides, floods and earthquakes among other events. ...I don't really agree with the "make shit up", but this was clearly an unusually rushed and unbalanced video. Just think, with a little more research and descriptions of working class environments vs. education, the script could have pushed them over 10mins for that ad revenue and they wouldn't even have needed to find a sponsor. Shame I'm so late with this comment they won't see it.

Cannons are true old world technology originally used as sound wave weaponry prior to the worldwide cataclysms which made for a "great fall" of many nations and, for the cannon, eventually a fall into disuse and obscurity as none of the new ruling class was ever able to reverse engineer the antiquitech and get it back online to use as the once formidable defence mechanism it once was known for throughout the old world/time.

A drunk sat on a wall A drunk had a great fall A drunk died How is this a riddle? Answer, it's not and never was. It's not even in the form of a riddle it is a pure statement of fact in song form, otherwise known as a story, or nursery rhyme. Riddles are questions, not statements. And even the original, was a statement, not a question.

I think Humpyy Dumpty refers to a cannon used in a war which got destroyed when the wall it was set on top of was blown to bits and it fell to the ground but it was too badly damaged and heavy to fix. Or something...
@tmhchacham
@tmhchacham 6 лет назад
He refers to that and says it is unlikely because there is no written record of it. Though, that completely misses the point that most parables/stories/rhymes were not recorded until much later when a collection was put together por they were referred to in another literary work.

Considering there's a plaque devoted to the cannon called humpty dumpty... at the location where it was intended to be stationed...I don't really care whether there's historical evidence for it or not, the people there certainly seem to take it as fact, and that's the most credence of any of the possibilities, so that's the one I choose to believe.

I know the feeling when it comes to people not understanding riddles. When I try to explain things I tend to over simplify it enough that it sounds like a riddle when I am really trying to explain an idea that is hard to put into words. On the other hand, I also come up with riddles when I feel that the person should figure some things out on their own.
@scaper8
@scaper8 6 лет назад
Given that the first visual depiction of Humpty Dumpty as an egg is from _Through the Looking Glass,_ and how immensely popular it and _Alice's Adventures in Wonderland_ were and still are, I suspect that "an egg" is _an_ answer to the riddle, just the one that Lewis Carroll (the author), John Tenniel (the illustrator), or both preferred. It just became the defacto answer because of that.

I always thought this song has a hidden meaning...lets take a look: Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall (held a position of power, possibly was a king) Humpty Dumpty had a great fall (he was dethroned after an uprising) All the kings horses and all the kings men couldn't put Humtpy together again (his army was unable to repel the attack and was also unable to secure his power as King, rebel forces take over)

I love the quality of research that go into these :) the thing I'm not sure about- if a person fell off a high enough wall, pretty sure no one would be able to put them together again. Why the assumption he's an egg rather than a man with a fractured skull? I assumed the egg was an adaptation to make the rhyme less macabre than a person who splatted on the ground
@cmdrterrorfirma4244
@cmdrterrorfirma4244 6 лет назад
I don't see how the "answer to the riddle" is "OBVIOUSLY an EGG"... just because it "could not be put together again" - seems like a huge assumption. Why couldn't Humpty Dumpty be any number of other easily broken items? It feels like you did not explain that very well.
@MarkAhlquist
@MarkAhlquist 6 лет назад
It seems reasonable to me. Is there some other reason Humpty would be an egg? I just checked and it seems people had glue back then. Wood, metal, ceramics, not much to break that can't be repaired. No Wal-Mart nearby, so everything was fixed if it was possible... but definitely not the clumsy rolly-polly egg.
@stirlingstewart
@stirlingstewart 6 лет назад
but could it not be the case that he was a bottle of brandy boiled in ale? In such a case the bottle could have fallen and broken and the liquid lost to the ground. no number of people could repair the glass and reclaim the drink. Im not clear on why it cannot be the bottle of alcohol

My favorite use of Humpty Dumpty was on Sesame Street. Kermit, the Frog is seen as a newsman (frog) reporting on the scene as the King's men and King's horses run around trying to put HD back together again. They succeed and Kermit is granted an interview with HD to ask him about his ordeal. It ends badly for HD as Kermit congratulates him by slapping him on his back and poor HD falls from the wall again. The men and horses are not happy and want the frog gone. Think it'd be more like: Dumpty Trumpty wanted a wall, "Across the boarder must pay for it all!", All of his forces and all of his men, And believe me, he knows all the best men, Not like when Obama built a wall, With all the worst men, That was the worst wall probably ever in history, But I'll get the best men, terrific men, They'll do a great job, you'll be very happy, And it'll come in under budget, Like when I said to Paul Ryan, "I don't care if the government shuts down, We need a better budget" Because they make the budget bigger and bigger But we need to drain the swamp, Remember when Trumpty said that? They said there's was no path to 270 And they were wrong, we were going to lock her up, and Dumpty Trumpty won 306 electoral college votes, But all the Democrats and all the DACA illegals, Don't want us to protect the country, Ever again. Christopher Hollis Well that ones been left false. He's still trying to get funding for the wall, he's not getting it from Mexico, and Clinton's role in Benghazi has been greatly overstated.

"Couldn't make 'murica great again." - That's a wonderful sentiment. I can picture a world where America will never be great again, and it always brings a smile to my face - mostly because in my vision, leftists are being lined up against a wall and shot in the back of the head. Let's all wish for America to never be great again 🍸

A story I had heard is that Humpty Dumpty refers to a wall in Naples Italy where there has been a prostitute sitting on the wall soliciting "business" for centuries (obviously not the same prostitute the whole time). Whenever she gets a "customer", they go behind the wall to conduct their "business".

The Colchester theory does have the virtue of having been based on real events for which there is good evidence. The church of St. Mary's at the Wall is part way along the old Roman city wall on the western side of Colchester, and a cannon on top of its tower would be ideally placed to defend the south-west part of the town from attack, so this is what the defending Royalists did. The Roundheads responded by targeting the tower with their own cannons and on 14th July 1648, just over a month into the siege, the top of the tower was destroyed. This ties in with the ending of the original 1797 version of the rhyme, "where he was before" - i.e. in the original telling Humpty could not be returned to where he had been. The top of the tower, which had been stone, was rebuilt in red brick in the 18th century.

tavdy79 much more likely as an explanation isn’t it. Particularly given the original wording as he mentions. Not sure why he went with riddle and egg as his theory in this one. I don’t usually disagree with his conclusions but this video did not convince me. For fourscore men to be focused on fixing something it has to be important and that ties in better with a canon that fell than an egg riddle.

To be fair, he didn't say it definitely wasn't based on this event, just that there is no surving written contemporary evidence of this being the case. Linguists won't say something is definitely true about a word or phrase's origin unless there is contemporary written evidence. So while this bit of speculation has some good logic to it, it is still without concrete evidence.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All The kingsmen and all the king's horses could not put Humpty together again. So they all sat down and had scrambled eggs.

I read one time and always thought that the cannon was called humpty dumpty because of the sound of the wheeled device used to move it (onomatopoeia), which required many workers to move.

But someone did blow the top off the tower in St. Mary-at-the-Walls in Colchester (it's a music venue now) - you can see the top bit is red brick (and a little bit old* - 1750) when the rest of the building is stone(and quite old* 15th century). There's a competing tale that HD was a marksman shooting from the top of the tower - which seems a bit more likely to me TBH (not least as the church is at the top of a very steep hill, with a fantastic field of fire - why go to all the trouble of lugging a honking great cannon up an extra 40 or 50 feet?) So it gives a little credence to the colcestrian tale. Maybe the egg thing was simply an illustration employed in the Lewis Carroll book - it was pretty 'out there'. . * 1648 might sound like a long time ago, but the wall it's next to 'The Balkerne Gate' is roughly 1580 years older. I love living in Colchester

I always wondered if "all the king's horses" was a reference to glue being made from horses and used to glue the egg shell back together.
