Also consider the angles -- if a ship is sailing in toward port, their bow is pointed to the harbor. Their broadside guns are pointed left and right out to open sea. Admittedly, this could be rather... alarming... to any vessel that happened to be sailing out of port and passing them at the time, but they wouldn't be shooting *at* the landscape, they'd be firing into the ocean

I have attended a number of funerals for American veterans. In every instance 21 shots were fired by the honor guard. One funeral had a 7 man honor guard that fired three times each, one had only one man in the honor guard and he fired 21 times in bursts of three changing his clip half way through, and in all the other instances it was a group of 3 in the honor guard that fired 7 times each - a single shot, a pause, three shots, a pause, and three shots. It may not be defined in the book, however it is something that the US military does in practice for those old soldiers.

My veteran sister was laid to rest in a military funeral. This included the 21 Gun Salute with seven military servicemen shooting three times each in unison and Taps played. The flag was folded by the servicemen, and it and the collected shells were presented to my sister's partner. The Star was given to our mother to signify the Mother's sacrifice of her daughter to the military service. So yes, a military funeral is given to all vets no matter how they died, so long as they served at least 6 months. This is in the United States.
@ruthy08
@ruthy08 4 года назад
There is no minimum time. If they perish while on active duty, then every one of them gets a full military funeral. If they weren't on active duty, and did not retire, they are authorized minimum honors. If they did retire, they are authorized standard honors. The only requirement is that they were discharged honorably. There is no time constraints. I've performed funerals for servicemen who'd only been in for a month before they were honorably discharged.

Technical point that the video was trying to make -- the *3 volley salute* fired at a soldier's funeral is *not* technically a "21 gun salute," which is reserved for presidents and dignitaries and not necessarily used at funerals I've been to veterans' funerals before where they only had 3 servicemen there to fire the salute; they fire 3 volleys, not 7... having 7 servicemen there to fire a 3 volley salute is not required, though it is common practice

There are police forces, sheriffs, FBI, CIA, NSA, Army Intelligence, NCIS, US Marshalls, the Secret Service, and probably many I've forgotten or don't know about. Heck, even the ATF has an investigative wing. What do they all do, why are there so many, and how do they manage to work together (provided they do)?

I had a military friend die last spring. Three vets shot seven times each. Brad wasn't active duty, he wasn't even Reserve any more. They did it for respect for him. In the rain, just because they understood. One day, those vets will get a twenty-one gun salute, and in my heart they already have it. I think I'd do almost anything for our vets. Sure, some are crooked, but most are heroes who deserve more air time than the blankety blank blank blank killers and gangs who take up the news. After 9/11, I don't watch news anymore. At all. I won't give those pieces of blankety blank blank head space ever again. I'd rather die or kill than let those pieces of blank ever scar me again. You can fill in the blanks.

Often times we would do 4 or 5 funerals in the same day so I was able to observe all branches during funerals and I have NEVER seen anything except 21 shots. Either 3 volleys by 7 rifleman or 7 volleys from 3 cannon teams .... ALWAYS 21 !!! Bonus fact: It wasn't uncommon for a widow to approach the firing party to pick up the 21 casings for sentimental value I originally assumed. So only around 5 shots were fired on the first volley, a couple of rounds on the second, and absolutely none on the third. So the quick thinking Squad leader yelled "BANG" to cover up the gaff in protocol. With the bereaved family looking up in grief and confusion, their Sergeant then marched the detail to the vehicle, with all of them trying not very well to keep a straight face along the way, and then everyone cracking up once they got inside; "BANG Sarge? lol." Needless to say, they were all called into the Colonels office the next day and were informed "If this person had been of any importance whatsoever, heads would roll, STARTING WITH YOURS! Now get out of my Office." So your statement can be more than true at times.

All military funerals that have military honors, have separate pallbearer and honor guard. Pallbearers could be military or family. VFW usually use older rifles where current military usually use m16 variations. 3 volleys are fired directed by VFW commander or Sgt. At arms followed by taps. Casket flag is folded in 13 folds where 3 spent casing are placed in flag by Sgt or commander. The flag is presented to wife or next of kin. Most honor guards are usually selected on height. My unit had rotation of a few out of each company that performed funeral on rotation. Some have designated "honor guard" that performs at highest level. Would also do military weddings as honor guard from time to time. Our unit had Sabres for those occasions. Sadly most have no idea how many marriages turn to divorce in military. Be amazed at how many lawyers await servicemen on Tarmac from deployment or training.

Well, how do you wave to someone from a distance? With your arm almost upright with and an open palm, I would think, so yeah, in that sense the "Roman salute" definitely has a historic and modern equivalent, far more than the military salutes common today which stem from another ancient tradition of removing one's helmet or cover infront of a superior to show that you're not looking for a fight, that's why regulations usually state that salutes should only be given with a cover on as the salute is a symbolic way of removing your cover, just like a wave is way of saying I'm unarmed and bear no ill will.

It is an absolute shame as well as a sad statement about how screwed up the world we live in that most people on this planet we call home rather look at the glass as half empty and fell compelled to scrutinize everyone and thing to find fault with them instead of trying to look on the sunnier side of life and this compelling need to do so has only gotten worse since the rise of unSocial Media and the ability to stay in contact with whatever via the smart phone

My cousin was found face-down in a puddle of water 150 miles away from home. There were other suspicious circumstances, but his death was determined to be an accidental drowning. As an active officer in the Merchant Marines, he was accorded a military burial, though his will specified that his ashes be buried with a sapling, so he was buried next to our grandparents in a small town in northern New Mexico, rather than Arlington National Cemetery. Only 5 guns were able to give him his salute; I wish they had taken 4 shots each so he'd get a 20-gun salute, but a 15-gun salute felt more traditional so I won't complain. I just wish the investigation would be reopened because he was too valuable an investment by the US Navy to be passed off as an accidental death.

Also you might just find an older vet that you can talk to,( you know those things you cant share with the wife or family). There is the chance he dealt with something similar.

As for salutes, the U. S. Military give the right - handed triangle salute with palm down, fingers pointed to the soldier's head. Civilians, if wearing a hat (men mostly) remove the hat and place it over their heart. Women also salute with their hand over their heart. Personally, I think the heart salute of civilians signifies the love of a citizen for their country and their people.

The 21 Gun Salute in such a quiet place as a cemetery is startling. It didn't matter how prepared I was for the second and third shots. I started at each one and began to cry. The Air Force also adds to an Airman's funeral a flyby of three planes in a 4-plane configuration called the "Missing Man" formation to signify the fallen Airman. (women, too, but I don't know the term.) It is my surmise that the military has specific activities to evoke emotions that are appropriate and healthy for people to feel. I think that is why people are not allowed to write letters to a soldier while they are in Basic Training. Two weeks into Basic Training, when isolated from the world, servicepeople are hungry for support, and letters from loved ones are dear, and the servicepeople appreciate the letters more. Too, there is an official band in each branch of the service. They play marches (especially those written by John Philip Sousa), and these have the same musical formula. The march is in time with a marching step. It is at once inspiring and beckoning, promoting pride and persistence. These qualities are necessary for servicepeople to continue to persevere, and the marches bring servicepeople together in unison.
@ruthy08
@ruthy08 4 года назад
The missing man formation is usually used only for POW/MIA deaths and fallen pilots, and is not often performed at their actual funeral, unless that person was particularly distinguished. More basic flyovers are only authorized for general officers, pilots, and MOH recipients.

Richard Moorhead when you say you’re involved, what do you mean? I’m in the Navy and I currently work on the honor guard team at the national cemetery in Jacksonville Florida.
